I am sorry to hear that ConnectionsAcademy.com isn't free in your State. I know in Oregon that it is touchy about everything to do with homeschooling, charter schools and free public schools. Right now there isn't any requirments that I know of to teach your own children. Public School in my opinion is a money pit. You spend so much more money on sending your kids than you would on getting your own books. For my four children I spent $75 total for the school year and they are doing great (not in a charter school or such). I love homeschooling and I am looking into a teachers guide to homeschoolers for lesson plan ideas, but a grade school teacher that I trained a dog for, told me to just go to your states academic site and it has a list of what books the kids are using this year and what subjects they are covering. I might end up moving to another State if I get any harassment about Homeschooling. It is hard enough to get a small business going and keep it out of the red in this state.
Besides that, there are awesome homeschool groups that meet in different locations and they alot of times have wonder ideas and there also wonderful homeschool book stores. Also, Borders and Amazon is a great place to get hard to find school books.

oops, let me clarify. Sending the kids to public school will create different kids. It can't be helped. The two environments are not at all alike and will produce another outcome. May be ok, but maybe bad.

Honey, DON'T send them to public school. My family is pretty much dirt poor, because my hubby has had several temporary health challenges over the years. I am a stay at home mom of 9 children and add no money to the household. Last year, my husband had not worked from Nov. 16 2009 -to Nov. 1st-ish 2010. Believe me, things were tight. But it was God who brought the money in. He just simply provides!!! I have curriculum already, my oldest is 17, so things will be getting easier on us in the curriculum money department. But at my local library, you can use your own private card, or get a Teacher's Card-you can check items out for an automatic 6 weeks w/o anyone waiting for it meanwhile. I believe you really can do school for free. But, since I have such a large family...and who doesn't like purchasing books? I buy our own. You will never regret keeping them at home....but you will probably have completely different kids...and I would think that might not be a good thing.

Regarding my earlier comments: In Ohio the teaching requirement is that the parent have a high school diploma, a GED, degree or something else the Superintendent agrees with. If you do not have those things, then it is possible to work under someone who does, until you have proven yourself.
So, I was only wondering if they were giving any trouble to Home School graduates who wished to teach their own children and only had a Home School diploma/ GED.
Thanks,
Susan

I just checked on connectionsacademy.com and it is not free in TN. It is:

Grade Level Tuition Fee* Total Pre-Pay
(Save 5%) Monthly Payment Plan
(0% Financing)
Lower (K-5) $4,726 $150 $4,876 $4,489 $472/month
Middle (6-8) $5,258 $200 $5,458 $4,995 $525/month
Upper (9-12) $5,779 $250 $6,029 $5,490 $577/month

How do you get its FREE? Is it because of the state you are in? I'm trying to learn. I need all the help I can get. Costs is one of the reasons we are considering going to public school.

I have both a college education (NOT IN SCHOOLING) and GED. The system treats me just fine. There are more highschool drop outs that go to get their GED than Homeschooled kids it seems and once I mention that I was homeschooled and not a drop out, it makes a big difference in the job world. Homeschoolers are regarded as very bright and self motivated individuals and are hardly ever looked down upon as adults. They make wonderful college students as well because they are used to thinking on their own and because college becomes a new experience (being taught by a class room teacher), most that I know are talkative and challenge the class room to a higher degree of thinking. I know from my own experience with my children, my eldest is very much like a young adult at the age of nine. Not in a bad way, he just interacts with adults better than children and he is treated with a lot more respect because of it.
You don't need credentials to Homeschool your children, it isn't a job where you are teaching other kids that aren't yours. I thought about getting a degree in teaching but I saw no point in it. The great thing about the books that are out there for Homeschoolers is that they are self explanatory and they don't require you to know the topic at the expertise of a teacher.
If you are worried about what topics your kids need to know and what the base minimum is for state requirements, I would look up the State teaching board and get the list of books they are using this year in public and private schools and also getting your kids tested will give you an idea of where they lack and where you need to pick up. There are also free online public schools, such as, connectionsacademy.com that my friend uses for her five homeschooled kids.

Well, then, Hello, happy family! lol
I probably have a couple questions for you, since you are a 2nd generation home schooler. By which 'credential' do you home school? A GED? College degree? I'm really interested in how the system treats the grown children who have become parents who want to teach their own kids.
I have 9. Ages 17-4. (And I just can't do this without mentioning the baby we lost in miscarriage a few years ago, not matter that he WAS only 9 weeks along. )

She is absolutely right. I am her daughter and she is amazing when it comes to home school advice. When I am stuck I always go to my mom and say, OK, what is next?. I have 2 kids in preschool, 1 in first grade and 1 in third grade and I can remember my Mom Homeschooling us and I try to live up to her teaching. I grant you that not everyone is a born teacher but ask her advice when you think that you want to try something, because chances are, SHE WILL HAVE TRIED IT WITH US.

I homeschooled my 4 children for 16 years. They are now successful adults, praise God! (some days I wondered if that would happen) and I have 4 grandchildren who are being homeschooled. I have a special heart for homeschooling moms and kids and if I can be any help, I would be honored to there for you.

I am now 54 years old, a 4th degree black belt instructor (thanks to our PE class!), and a cpr instructor. Life is Good. Enjoy every day with your little "angels". They will grow and go sooner than you think.
