Hello all.

I'm brand-new to sparkpeople, but I'm glad I'm here. I never had much of a weight problem until my late thirties. Before then I was running five or so miles a day, but then I had a stress fracture and haven't exercised consistently since then. I'm now 44. At 5'8" and 183 lbs., I realized it was time to do something.

I've been swimming laps every day for a week or so, and I started dieting about the same time. So far I've lost 4 lbs. Not much, but it's a start.

Coming here I was focused on my weight and exercise, but I'm glad to see the cholesterol support group, too. I haven't had my cholesterol tested in a while, but in the past, it's been about 250 when I haven't been watching what I eat and about 200 when I am careful with my diet. I plan on going in soon to have some lab work done and will report.

Anyway, thank you for welcoming me. I'm off to go swimming in a minute.

John

Hi everyone. I'm new to the team. Just turned 50 this year and went in for a physical. I thought I was healthy but found out my cholesterol was not in the healthy range.
Total Chol=235
LDL=148
HDL=26
Glucose=100
On top of that, going through menopause. Started new diet and came across Spark People. Glad I found this site. Really helps to have the support I find here. emoticon

Hope

Hello,

My name is Linda, I am joining this group because I need support for lowering cholesterol. I am currently taking Lovistatin 80 mg. I try to eat right but more times then not, I don't make the best choices.

I'm looking forward to being a member of this team.

Hi. Just joined sparkpeople today. I am over 50 and want to be active and feel well as long as I live. My cholesterol was a disaster 6 months ago. Those numbers are all good now except my HDL is a little low. I have been exercising faithfully 30 minutes 5-6 times a week. I have dropped 28 lbs and I just recently noticed that coming up my front steps is a lot easier. I am tracking my exercise minutes on my Other Goals page and, I hope to do at least 500 each month. I know from experience how important it is to keep active. It does good things for the mind and body.

Hi, I'm new to this team. My cholesterol was too high and I went on Simvastatin and started working out and adjusted my way of eating. After 4 months my cholesterol went down but not as much as my doctor or I thought it would.

A lot of it has to do with my age and family history. As far as I know once I get it down I will still be taking the meds, exercising and watching my diet. I go for rechecking in the end of June and hopefully everything kicked in and I've gotten my count down.

Hi All,
A newbie here w/ a need to lose weight and lower my cholesterol and a desire to avoid the meds. I had been exercising for the last few years and been able to control it pretty well, but it seems like age and the battle of the bulge is winning (could be I like eating too much also emoticon ) Anyway, was inspired by a buddy to track what I eat to get a better handle on my food intake. Recently I have been taking B5 and Policosanol to help w/ the LDL # and in a little over 2 months my LDL went down 40 points.

Hi everyone. I have just been told that I need to lower my cholesterol and be retested in about two months to see if I can do it without medication. I already have high blood pressure that is being controled by medications. So, I was told to eat a low cholesterol diet and get more exercise. Great. Now, what would be considered a low cholesterol diet? I know oatmeal is good for that and I already eat that almost every morning because I love it and it fills me up. Any suggestions about where I can find information? Thanks everyone.

Aleece

Hi! My name is Patty and as the name I picked out for myself implies, yes, I am a sweetaholic! LOL The Dr told me my cholesterol was high two years ago and I went back last year and it was again at 249. I do not take medication for it, I was told to exercise and watch my diet. I would really like to be healthy as my ten year old daughter told me she wants me to live forever. I know that's impossible, but by changing my eating and exercising, I can live a longer life with greater mobility. I look forward to sharing our journeys to our goals together and enjoy reading your posts!

My doctor is a regular MD and suggested the supplement red grain rice. I bought some today. I know of one person who had success with this. I was advised to take it twice a day with meals.

Littleblkdress - I'm on Zocor, started SP in January, and just got test results back for the first time since starting. Following the meal plans and hitting the gym for the first time in eleven years, I cut my overall cholesterol in HALF! The doc says that if I'm still doing well (have to get the HDL up) in six months, he'll take me off the meds. You CAN do it!!

Hello all!

I just joined this team and just joined SparkPeople yesterday. I had a baby three months ago and need to lose about 25 pounds now. In addition, my doctor thinks my cholesterol is too high - thus joining hte team. So far I'm doing ok - lost about 5 extra pounds and dropped my fat percentage by a point or two but I still have a 25 lbs and more fat to go!

Happy to be part of a group with similar challenges!

Nicola

Hello everyone,

I am new to SP and finally joined the site after quite a bit of nudging from a family member and a doctor who referred me here. In my journey to be healthier Cholesterol is an area I have to watch. At my last check up LDL was 69, HDL 30, and triglycerides 228 which was a big improvement from over 300 a year ago. I still have a ways to go but Lovesa seems to be working. In addition, I am taking Niaspan and hope to kick both by working to improve the numbers through regular exercise that is stuck to and continued healthy eating.

I am happy to be here and hope to learn much.

All the best.

I too have high cholesterol the ldl one he said not to high for Med's but high enough to say do something now. So I know to watch what I eat as far as portions, I know to exercise. But... do we really know what to eat and say no bad stay away from in this situation? The doc didn't give me any info. Help

Hello, I'm Irene, age 60. I stopped taking my vytorin last September figuring I could maintain a decent number with diet and exercise. In January my total number was 263. I was opposed to taking a statin medication so my dr tried Welchol but it only brought my number down to 258. Now I am back on the vytorin which gave me decent numbers. I regret to admit that I am not too diligent in my food choices. I'm a brat when it comes to eating certain foods. I do try to bring fruits and vegetables into the house but I always manage to have a portion of something I'm not supposed to have. My doctor insists that even though the medication will bring my numbers down that I ought to avoid foods known to be high in cholesterol. I had just finished having a quesedilla with chorica so I felt a little guilty but realize I better take the medication and hope to improve my behavior, but today I had fried chicken.
Obviously, I need a support group!
All the best.

Hi! Thought I'd introduce myself. I'm Sharyn and I'm not sure of my cholesterol numbers yet because I only had a baseline done, but if it was correct, I am in trouble. I need to make an appointment for a full physical so I can find out where I really am. I don't need to lose weight, so it must be my poor eating habits and lack of exercise. I do have a question. I signed up for the cholesterol email, and unfortunately, the company I work for has blocked it so I can't go to the links in the email. Any idea of a way around that? Thanks!

Hi I'm Kathy and I have recently been diagnosed with high cholestorl and border line diabetes. Really no surpise since I can't seem to get the weight off. I have been put on medication which I am not happy about at all. So this is finally my motivation to lose the weight. My father died of complications from diabetes and heart disease. You would have thought that would have been a wake up call for me. Oh well...I am going to lose the weight to get off of this medicine!!!

Hi, Team. Just received lab results from Doc & found out I have high cholesterol. My mom struggles with this as well & there is a history of heart disease in my family, so I better address this now. Glad to find a team of people working toward the same goal.

Hi my name is Sandra
I lowered my triglicerides and cholesterol dramatacly in 6 weeks I went and saw a dietician at Hyvee of all places and she showed my all the things that I could eat to lower my cholesterol and tryglicerides. I have been eating oatmeal every night along with 2 TBSP of flaxseed meal. eating 1/3 cup of roasted soy beans (soy nuts) and drinking 2 cups of soy milk (I found that Silk with omega 3's is the best tasting and creamiest). I also knocked out almost all fats, I try to keep my saturated fats below 10 grams, I also eat a whole lot more veggies and fruits, not so much bread and enriched flour items, stick to whole grains as much as possible. My doctor and dietician were totally shocked at how fast I was able to drop my numbers...hopefully I can keep it down or lower it more in the next 6 weeks. I am also on simvastatin 20mg. but I was on it before the diet change and it hadn't done much if anything. Hope this helps someone. you can check out my spark page to see the actual numbers of my cholesterol and stuff.

Hi Jules0728 - First of all, medication isn't the worst thing that can happen, ok?
I know that I am sort of a Pollyanna, but you can make a huge difference in the LDL and HDL by healthy eating and exercise.
Keep the faith! Do your best and if at first you don't succeed, don't beat yourself up!

Hello everyone,

I'm new to this site. I had my physical and my cholesterol is through the roof too so my dr has given me 3 months to bring it down or face a life of medication which I do not want. My only problem is my dad also has high cholesterol so I'm worried that the diet and exercise might all be for naught....

Hello! I am Mandy 24 year old wife and mother to two beautiful girls! Went to the doc to get results of physical, my cholesterol was a tidge on the high side. my LDL was fine, My HDl was low and my triglycerides were throught the roof...yucky! So it made my all over cholesterol 201...not too bad, but I am too young to have high cholestreol so the doc is giving me a chance to do this whole overload on my own before starting me on meds (thank God) Ready for action!

Hi,
I am also battling high cholesterol. the Doctor wants to put me on Crestor. I have brought down my number a little, but being a diabetic, they want it down even further. thus the reason for joining Spark People, to read how everyone else gets the motivation to eat smarter, and lower my numbers by eating healthy.

Hi my name is Cindy, I am a forty nine year old that has cholesterol problems all my life. I have been keeping record of my nutrition and I even do not meet my cholesterol count. I used to be on medicine for it when we lived in Fort Worth, but when I lost our insurance I had to drop the medicine. The doctor I have now said to manage it by diet. But the problem is that I do not meet any of my quotes except salt. Man I could not believe this, because I do not salt any of my foods. It is actually in the cheese I eat every once in a while.

Josh - I was also overwhelmed by the drastic changes I've made over the last few months. The up-side for me has been the increased energy and decreased fatigue. It sounds weird because I'm much more active than I've been in years. With the diet change (dietary fiber is your friend) and increased exercise ... I expected to be exhausted all the time. I sleep better than I have in years and wake up ready to face the day. I wouldn't have joined SP if it hadn't been for my boss and my nutritionist and I'm glad they convinced me. Good luck.

hi all, my name is josh. i am 39 and live in vermont. i just started on sparkpeople today. i also just found out that my total cholesterol number is well over 300, and i should be under 100 due to my risk factors ( early coronary disease in my family and smoking, although i quit almost 7 weeks ago.)my doctor put me on simvastatin and i have to completely change my diet and start excersizing. i am a little freaked out by all of the changes i have to make, and as of yet don't really know how to make the diet changes. i am going to be seeing a nutritionist, so hopefully that will help.

Hello -
I'm new to SP and glad to find this page. Like others here, my trigyclerides are high at 475. I had a ultrasound of the abdomen and it showed fatty liver disease and gallstones. I have been referred to a liver specialist. I have type 2 diabetes (diagnosed almost 2 yrs ago)and do not drink alcohol. I hope to learn more when I see my doctor next week. I've taken a lot of tylenol over the last 32 years for pain, which may have some effect on the elevated liver enzymes?? I'll post more as I learn.
Thanks for having this forum!

Hi, I just found this spark team and joined today. I am 51 and have always had a total cholesterol of 269 and my family doc wouldn't put me on meds. I lost weight thru Weight Watchers and have kept it off for 2 years and now eat oatmeal every day but the cholesterol is still high. Bad cholesterol is 179 and triglycerides is 207. My dad has early heart disease so talked me into going right to a cardiologist. The cardio doc said you need to be on meds NOW and get that LDL under 100 due to the early heart disease in my family. So I've been on Simvastatin since Feb 25 and have had all the side affects on/off since then, currently constipated, so that's hampering my weight loss. I'm hoping for some ideas in this forum, so if you have any, post 'em on my page, please! Oh, and I get my first recheck April 29 so we'll see how the meds are doing then.

My triglycerides weren't that high ... but well in the mid-400s. My doctor put me on "triglide" (I'm not sure what the true name is) for a while and it helped. What helped even more was eliminating processed meats completely. No sausage of any kind, no ham, pretty much no pork products. I don't fry anything. Bake, braise, broil, or grill. I still have the "high LDL/low HDL" problem, but my triglycerides are under control. Diet is huge ... lots of dietary fiber ... I haven't given the flax seed thing a try yet. Good luck ... hope this helps.

I went in twice in one week to do blood work but have actually been about three times in the last year and the tri's are always over 1000. Its annoying to have the docs look at me like Im lying when I tell them that I don't drink. There response is "Well normally you only see tri's this high in alcoholics.

Im working the weight side of it now hoping that will make a big difference. Otherwise Im eating as much fiber as possible and reading anything I can get my hands on that relates to high triglycerides.
I havent heard of the flax stuff. I'll defin. have to look into that one.

Meanwhile.... any advice on quicker ways to lower it is much appreciated !!

Hi Lynn! I have not heard of those high numbers before. All I know to do is diet and exercise. Stay away from eggs as much as possible. They contain a lot of cholestrol. My dietician states no more than 1-1/2 a week. Eggbeaters are unlimited though. She also recommended milled flaxseed.

Live every day like it was your last. Live it to the fullest but always treat others with respect.

After reading other peoples introductory posts I'm almost embarrassed to admit mine.
I'm Lynn. I am a 32 yr. old married female with a four yr. old daughter. I have a family history of heart disease. My endocrinologist sent me in two times to do blood work. The first time my triglycerides were 1800 and the second time they were around 1200. I got the whole speech about pancreatitis and now Im taking 1 gm of fish oil capsules four times a day. Its hard to beleive that only ten yrs ago my cholesterol was excellent.
The docs are trying to talk me into taking something like Tricore or Niacin but they are both class "C" drugs and they arent something you should take if your trying to get pregnant.
I dont drink or smoke and I don't have any other issues like diabetes or thyroid problems. Does anyone else out there have triglycerides as high as mine?

Hilary - I'm not a medical professional in any way. High cholesterol (according to my doctor and nutritionist) can easily be controlled by diet and exercise. My triglycerides were over 400 at one time. I joined SP specifically to lower my cholesterol numbers and get off medications. I don't know if "the damage" can be fixed ... but IF you follow a healthy diet and get exercising, you CAN stay off medication. A genetic pre-disposition for high cholesterol is not a life sentence. Again, according to my doctor and nutritionist, even with a family history, you can control your numbers. Hope this helps. Please don't take anything I say as gospel. Talk to your doctor and make sure you follow his/her directions.

My name is Hilary and I am 29. I am married (almost 7 years) and have 2 children (girl - almost 3 and boy - 8 months). I just had a physical done 2 weeks ago. My blood work came back and now I'm really stressing. My total cholesterol was 241, my Triglycerides were 254!!!!, my HDL was 53, and my LDL was 137. This really scares me. Does this mean my arteries are already in bad shape or can this be reversed or what? I don't really know how to fix my numbers either. What should I do to lower cholesterol and how do I fix my Triglycerides? Both of my parents are medicated for high cholesterol. I have 3 months to lower it before the doctor takes other measures. Oh, I'm also supposed to loose 15 to 20 lbs.

Hi all my name is Roxane, I am 42yrs. old and I have had a long history (19yrs.) of high to very high cholesterol. Currently I am in the middle. As of right now the doctor has me on Zocor and really watching what I eat along with having to lose about 30 pounds. I have cut out all meats and I am just eating fish, fruits and vegetables, I guess you could say I went vegetarian.

Do what you can do and let God do what you can not.
