Welcome! I've given up on statins because the leg cramps got to be too much for me. I watch my carbs because type 2 diabetes runs in my family but I never thought of sugar and cholesterol being related. I do know omega 3's (fish oil, olive oil, grass fed beef, etc.) help and I do try to incorporate that into my diet. Even Walmart carries grass fed beef now. I don't know if my numbers are worse now that I don't take statins because I'm on Medicare and they only pay for a lipid panel every five years.

The large weight loss may be mostly water weight and you may find yourself putting some of it back on, but don't let that discourage you.

The secret of change is to focus all of your energy not on fighting the old, but on building the new.--Socrates

Hi Gang,

Joined Spark last week as a resource for information and tracking my nutrition. I am 54 years old and am refusing my docs orders to go on statins. I have read too many bad things about their side effects. Moreover, I have read books that seem to prove that SUGAR is the real culprit not fat. So I am really managing my carb and sugar intake and boosting my proteins. In any case, my first week I lost 14 pounds, which is rather absurd given that I am overweight but not enough to justify such an absurd loss. I was 252 and dropped to 238 the same week I indulged on a 16-oz NY strip and very cheesy veggie lasagna. Lots of leafy greens with olive oil too.

Anyway anyone else out there battling the lipid battle from the sugar side instead of the fats side?
