There is no one simple fix. The liver makes cholesterol. The statins reduce the amount it makes but also can cause some damage over time, higher dosages causing greater damage. So to keep dosages as low as possible diet and exercise come into play. The liver dumps the cholesterol it makes into the digestive system and it is absorbed into the bloodstream. Things like pectin and oatmeal help remove the cholesterol from the digestive system before it can be absorbed.

Here's a good article from Healthy Eating that talks about which fruits have the most pectin. You'll notice that it's concentrated in the skin of the fruit and so it's important to eat the skin:

Yea plan on sitting down with my doctor and going what I can and can not to do due to my allergies. I am not going to give up. After some research I found some Omega3's I can take, I think but need to ask my doctor first. She is the first one I have ever had that has been helpful and trying to help.

BEBARB149 is offering some good pointers. I would like to offer some also. It would help you to practice some patience in dealing with your situation and changes in your life. They are not easy to deal with. However if we let ourselves focus too much on things we cannot do or foods or supplements that we can't take, we just make it harder to adapt. Instead try focusing on what you can do. With the right attitude, and a willingness things will work out. Remember you are worth the effort!! emoticon

There are other ways to get Omega 3's: vegan supplements, flaxseed, etc, Google it. Doesn't matter, just so you get enough.

Welcome back. Are you doing the daily fish oil, oatmeal, apples with the peel on thing? It does really help lower the cholesterol some.

Welcome to the team. We are all fighting a battle of some kind here. Obviously most of us are working at keeping our cholesterol in check and there are a lot of good ideas out there.
I don't have fatty liver, and it could be I try to take care of my liver by taking a supplement to help keep it clean. I use MILK THISTLE.(herb) .two caps a day and although I should take it every day, just because...I usually take it for about 10 days ..and then back off for a month or month and 1/2.then repeat for another 10 days.. This works for me. You might want to research it and see if it is something you could use to get your liver functioning again...

I do NOT take any statins.. and I have discontinued all NSAIDS....(over the counter pain relievers) in as much as they add to stress on the liver.

Come back often and share what you are doing and see what others are sharing as well.

I have been away from Spark for a while and needed to come back. I am new to this group however. I have known for a for years I have fatty liver disease and high cholesterol. Combined with being over weight and native american I am having all kinds of fun. After surviving cancer you would think this wouldn't bother me but it does. Got the call today my liver enzymes are the highest they have ever been so now have to have a hep blood test and liver ultrasound. Also white blood cell count is higher than it's normal high, so more blood work for that. I'm currently not taking cholesterol meds because last 2 I have been on we found out I am allergic too. So I am scared and have no clue what to do.
