Barbara Good advice except if she is type 1 (which I am not sure from her message), then she definitely needs to take the insulin. That's why I can't believe they sent her home without understanding what to do. I have a type 1 daughter and she can die if she doesn't take her insulin. Something like 6 hours without insulin can do it. Recently she was staying at a friend's and ran out of insulin in her pump. She was coming home at noon and figured she would just wait till she got home, but ended up in the ER.

Give these people a heads up that they left you hanging. You can call the ER and ask to talk to the doctor who treated you there about the medicine they prescribed. Call the pharmacy and tell them you don't know how to handle the medicine they sold you and ask what to do. Don't take the insulin if you are at all uncertain about how to handle it. Definitely call your doctor and tell him what's going on even though it's Sunday.

My daughter has Type 1 Diabetes so I know a lot about this. Do you have Type 1 or Type 2 Diabetes? Reason I ask is that you are taking insulin. You need to see a diabetes educator t understand how this all works. Surprised that you were sent home without better preparation. You said you have two kinds of insulin. Generally one is once a day long term insulin usually Lantus. The other insulin is more short term and is taken several times per day. You should have either gotten specific schedule of times, 3 or 4 times per day. Or many do what is called intensive which is taking a shot each time you eat to match the insulin with the carbs. There is a lot to know so don't hesitate to call your doctor even if outside of office hours. It is scary as there are so many new things to think about. Also it is important to get a meter to check your blood sugar levels. Usually you will get one from your doctor. But if not you can buy a cheap one at your pharmacy. Write down all your questions and be sure and get full understandings at your doctor appointment on Monday. Don't hesitate to call your doctor if you need help before Monday.

Just yesterday I found out I was a diabetic. I feel so lost and confused as to what I can eat. I went to my dr, because I noticed a huge weight loss. In ten weeks I had lost 35 lbs. My dr. called my house yesterday and told me to only have 1500 calories. He then later called and told me to go to the ER. While in the ER I was given 20 units of insulin and 3 bags of fluid. At 11:30pm I was released from the hospital. I went to my pharmacy to pick up some medicine. I found that I had two kinds of insulin to use. Here is my dilemma...they did not show me how to use the insulin and I do not have a testing machine. I sit here crying as I'm so confused. I follow up with my dr. on Monday. I have taken Metformin and still keeping up with my 1500 calorie but I'm really scared to eat. Any help would be great!
