I would recommend Neon's beginner DVD's if you're just starting. She gets right to the point.
Before starting classes, try to do a little of everything to get your muscle memory going. When you're doing your shimmies practice using your glutes (as well as your hips) because it takes a long time to get the hang of it, also don't feel like you have to go too fast, focus on "isolating"
Try the Basic Egyptian (walk),start your snake arms too because if you learn to dance with your hips, then later incorporate your arms it will feel strange. I also read it's best to start zills too, but I find them difficult.
Do a lot of yoga in the mean time also.

You got this!

Hi guys,

I'm not all that new to SP (about a month), but I AM new to belly dance. I have two coworkers who belly dance, one of which is an instructor and the other who has been her student for five years. I just went to a performance about two months ago and I couldn't stop grinning. All I could think was: "I want to do that!"

So I'm starting classes in September. I was thinking about getting some dvd's to start practicing some basic movements before then (shimmies are HARD). What would you guys recommend?

Thanks!
