I finished my M.A. online back in December. The online program was much more stressful than I would have ever given it credit. Hard deadlines, no quick feedback when working through email...it does take discipline for sure. Keep up the great work because it is so worth it.

I haven't been on here in a while due to the inactivity - I would also like to see this group come alive! I have been struggling with my weight for the last 5 years - I believe stress plays a big part in it. I have gained 50 pounds and my goal is to lose at least 30 of it as well as regain my energy and just be fit. I'm 49 and work full time and am currently taking college classes online to finish what I started many moons ago emoticon That being said - it has been a little stressful with my job, studying, and taking care of my family and home. It has left me with little time to cook a healthy meal - picking up fast food too often, and no time for exercise.
Hopefully I can stay in contact with a few on here to help with motivation! It seems it helps me a lot to be held accountable.
Wish everyone that may read this good luck and health!

Hi All,

I thought I would put out an introduction. I couldn't find an original post, but this could be a repeat.

So, I am 38 years old. I've struggled with being overweight most of my life. I was never very active as a teenager growing up. I started working in corporate America when I was 18 in 1995. I weighed in about where I do now.

My uncle and I joined FormU3 back in 1997. I lost down from 271 to 197 on that program. We didn't buy their supplements, but we did follow the program to the letter. I liked the program because the exercise was minimal at 30 minutes per day and the food choices included all the food groups. But, like anything that is not maintained, I ended up putting the weight back on.

I started a position at work that had me traveling from 2004 through 2007 where I got up into the 290's. I joined Sparkpeople back in 2007 and lost down to the 250's. I was back to traveling quite a bit for work over the next several years. I'd gotten as high as 315 in May 2013. That was a turning point for me. I started to take off the weight some.

The fall of 2013 gave me a warning shot across the bow. My doctor decided to pull my insulin levels. We'd observed my fasting glucose level was creeping up over the years. Sure enough, my insulin was above normal. I was showing signs of being insulin resistant or pre-diabetic. Type 2 diabetes runs in my family. I went on Metformin. It worked great, but I hadn't addressed the issue of my weight which was the culprit.

I joined the YMCA's Diabetes Prevention Program in October 2014. I was at 296 when I started the program. I've lost the 7% goal weight loss for the program, but I really want to lose more weight. I would like to get down to 220-225 for now knowing I should really get under 200 in the long run.

I have realized that my biggest problem is food. Dining out tends to be the worst thing for me to do. I also tend to be super sensitive to sodium. I love Asian food. I can feel the water retention after eating Chinese or hibachi. It usually takes me about 4 days to pull off the water weight. I would say 80%+ of my weight problem is the food I eat.

Exercise isn't such a problem for me. I tend to stay pretty active. I'm at the YMCA most days for some cardio or an ActivTrax workout. Outside of the Y, I enjoy biking, kayaking, and I just bought a SUP board. I do love being out on the water. I am thinking hiking should be the next thing I add to my exercise toolbox, but I really hate being out in the heat if I am not in the water or moving fast enough for the wind to keep me dry on my bike. I see hiking as more of a cooler month option.

Outside of the activities, I enjoy being active at church, reading, catching a movie, sci-fi, and exploring more sci-fi conventions. Labor Day weekend is my favorite weekend of the year because of Dragon Con in Atlanta. This will be my third year going to that sci-fi convention.

Hit me up if we share similar interests or if you would like to partner up for exercising. I would love to get a group of Sparkers together for standing exercise activities.

In closing, I am committing myself to getting more active on this page. Hopefully, I can lead by example and get more people involved. I will say my best results happen when I have been fully engaged and utilizing everything Sparkpeople has to offer.
