Yes I am a horse lover! I don't have my own but I help out at the racetrack during the racing season. I'm a hot walker....I walk the horses to exercise them or cool them down. They get walked about a mile each time....so I was walking about 5 miles a day....and I felt great during that time. I have a dog but she's harder to walk then the horses!!!

Oh yes - PS, Kathy…

I suffer from back problems, double arthritis in my feet and am carrying the last bits of a cruciate knee injury and shoulder injury which, at my age, will never completely resolve. I have now developed gout, which is weird as I don't fit the normal profile (I never drink alcohol, have minimal amounts of rich red meat and, in spite of falling off the wagon slightly, have a good diet with loads of fresh fruit and veg!). When a doctor told me to 'go to the gym' I could have well and truly landed him one (!!) because I thought he was heartless and insensitive. But, not to be outdone, I did contact a gym 10 miles away in our nearest town. I was terrified, self-conscious, all the usual stuff. But I found the money to pay for some sessions with a personal trainer in order to teach me what to do. Fast forward 14 months to someone who has become a gym bunny and has been featured on the gym's FB page as an example of what can be achieved at 63! I could barely walk at first, let alone breathe when doing the cardio - now I can run for 3/4mile on the treadmill (I call it the Dreadmill!!), do circuits and lift/move weights which younger people cannot. I do have a personal trainer for every third visit, and she is amazed at what I can do! So - yes, I too carry physical limitations, but my mindset there is to keep challenging myself and, being sensible when my body tells me to back off for a while, I really do do that. I know what I can't do so I maximise on what I CAN do! I really do try to enjoy the positives and diminish the negatives.

And I have a goal: in another 7lbs time (loss, that is!) I will go riding again! I used to ride constantly, but a move/divorce put paid to that. 25 years later, I AM GOING TO RIDE AGAIN! A friend has a lovely cob just waiting for me! WOOHOO! You CAN do this, Kathy - you CAN!

Hello Kathy!

One of the things which this site does so utterly brilliantly, is to make it so welcoming that each of us can ask for help, friendship and support without feeling nervous. The fact that you have taken the time to write into the forum shows just how much you ache for something to help you turn yourself around. YOU ARE NOT ALONE - but, in the end, only you can do this. But you DON'T have to do it all by yourself.

I'm wavering a little myself just now and it's time to read myself the riot act! The thing is, I know the answers and, in the end, so do most of the people who are struggling with trying to lose weight. My advice to you now is, as I have found to be incredibly useful, to spend some time reading, reading, reading SP success stories and then the motivation articles. I learned, when I first joined SP (before I fell off the wagon, ruined the success I'd had and went MIA for way too long, before 'coming HOME to where I belong) that feeling sorry for myself and having a pity party was not positive - oh, rest assured that I'm not saying that's what you are doing, but someone was brave enough to tell me not to do it and she is now my 'bestest Friend' - it was a valuable lesson in ME changing MY mindset. I need to do it again - I'm not being as vigilant and enthusiastic as I was before and the results speak for themselves.

Above all, be active on SP - DAILY. Even if things are not clicking just yet, interact with everyone and the site because it WILL help to turn things around at some point. No, it's not easy- but it's not complicated rocket science either. Weight issues are a mind/brain problem which manifests itself on the body. Get the mindset right, the rest will follow - and with that will come self-esteem which will lead to enthusiasm, which will lead to…. get it?

So, here we all are, muddling around in the same boat on a choppy sea. I've had great success and miserable set-backs. Others are the same. I will forever be a WIP - come aboard again, no need to drown out there!

Welcome to the team. Looks like you are also a horse lover. My horse was my greatest motivation to get in shape and still encourages me to exercise.
Animals are great motivators.
Cheers,
Birgit

Hi Kathy, I also needed and still do need help! I to have a bad knee and just recovered from a broken ankle. While everyone around me is running and jogging and going to the gym I can not do it. it is just to hard on my knee and ankle. I started going to our local gym and do 30 minutes a day in the exercise pool 3 to 4 days a week. I water jog for 30 minutes. It burns alot of calories. It feels great! there is no pressure on your joints and the warm water makes them feel good. I live in michigan and it is snowing and freezing here now but when spring comes I will try to get some outdoor walking in. It has been such motivation for me now that I can do some exercise. don't give up, you can do it! I am a christian and also pray and ask God to give me willpower. He has blessed me!

I AM THANKFUL FOR MY STRUGGLE BECAUSE WITHOUT IT I WOULDN'T
HAVE STUMBLED ACROSS MY STRENGTH!!!!

I'd like some good, low impact work outs to start with. My knees hurt and it's probably due to weight. So, something that isn't going to kill them. I am waiting on my YMCA application, hoping to get into some water exercises as well as yoga.

I've been struggling for so long and never gave it to serious of a thought. With the way my last 2 years have gone I have really let myself go. Mentally and physically. I suffer from depression and (recently) anxiety. I have also developed other health issues that concern me enough to seriously do something about it!! I want to exercise more and try to eat better....
