Hi - I'm Debra from Raleigh, NC. I have three rescued dog-children:
Moxy, 9, is an Australian cattle dog;
Willie, 3, is a cattle dog/border collie mix;
Joey, 1, is a cattle dog who happens to be deaf.

We just adopted Joey in August after being his foster home for six weeks. He came from a shelter in the town in VA where I grew up. After teaching him signs and becoming so close to him, I just couldn't let him go!

Way to go: post a reply and THEN introduce yourself.
I am from North Carolina though I grew up in Ohio then lived in the northeast for a long time. My husband of 30+ years is violently allergic to dogs. We had bichons as city dwellers, then moved up to standard poodles. They are non-allergenic and they don't shed. It's great. But it does cost a forturne to groom them. A year ago I had a pack of 4. I love that. I had had four for a long time, but I lost two this year: one to old age and one had to be rehoused because I have a seizure disorder and he is a natural seizure dog. From the day he came home he was taking care of me (the breeder told me he was 8 weeks old and he was 6. In week 7 they learn bite inhibition. Beware!). Little did I realize what harm I was doing him by letting him sit with me during seizures. He could not accept me as both pack leader and the injured one, and as he got older he tried to drive me out of the pack (read: biting without skin breaks but huge bruises; tearing clothes; challenging every single thing I did). I engaged the best behavorial person in town and together we spent months and only lost ground. He was so bright and so sensitve and we loved each other so much it was impossible to keep him. Does that make sense? It was tearing the pack apart. I finally had to accept that if he stayed he would eventually bite. Being sick I did not have the energy for 24/7 leadership. Three weeks after my older dog died I gave him up to a home with a dominant female who keeps him in line in a way a human never could. I pray that he's OK. I only had him nine months but he was a treasure to me even or maybe because he was abusive. I understand the abuse has stopped but he's still bratty. I have still the two sweetest dogs who ever lived, a prissy female who knows how beautiful and smart she is, and a good ol' lazy guy who constantly gets his way by just showing up: under your hand, at the garbage, by the counter. They are older and I am finally applying what I learned about dogs when I had the problem child. The old guys are coming around--they were always sweet. Now I am getting rid of nuisance barking, counter surfing, door crashing, etc. I would love to get a seizure dog, it would change my life. I don't know if it's in the cards, though. If anyone has any information I would love to learn more.

If there is no Earth on which humans and other species can thrive, nothing else matters, nothing.

To Big Brother 323: Running on leash: if the dog is OK on the leash, which apparently yours is, the first thing is to demonstrate in every way all day long that you are in charge. Never feed or pet him when he asks. Wait until he wander saway, then a few minutes later call him and give him lots of praise. Be the first through every single doorway in your house every single time. At first you'll have to do this on leash. Stop, say "wait" or whatever you want. Watch for the dog to look away, sit/lie down, or drop its tail Now you are in charge. A wagging tail is not you in charge; it's the dog buying time while it figures out what you want. Don't go through the door while the dog is wagging. Set aside time for the first few days for this to take forever. Release the dog to lots of praise and walk through the door. Everytime the dog gets ahead of you, reverse direction by turning to the right with the leash in your right hand--have a little slack in your hand which you drop as you turn; this will pull and release the dog's collar in a humane way. Encourage the dog to turn and keep up with you. It's a fun game. Same thing outside, maybe a week later. You are first out the door. Change directions when the the dog's shoulders pass your leg. Change quickly. Be more fun than squirrels and other dogs. Lots of praise. Demand his constant attention by changing things up. Don't give his mind a chance to wander. A homemade obstacle course is a good way to train the dog to pay attention to you, and it is so much fun. Corrections are not punishment but instruction. Soon you will have a wonderful running companion and an exhausted dog. Thinking wears them out. But you have to invest up front. Undoing bad habits is hard. I know. Good luck, Cynthia, only 2 right now but usually have 4, standard poodles (smarter than me!)

Howdy,

I am originally from Michigan which is where I was privileged to sort of rescue DJ (AKA--Critter), my 9 year old giant Alaskan malamute.

The lady who originally bought DJ, decided after a month of having him and his brother, she didn't want him anymore. She hadn't even named either of them. DJ's mother is regular malamute and his Dad is giant malamute (weighing 198 pounds). DJ weighs about 120 pounds and has arthritis in both hips.

We only bought one of the dogs because my husbands health was beginning to decline as was my dad's. My dad died 3 weeks after we got DJ. Because of DJ, my husband lived a year longer than expected. DJ really took care of Dad. Every where that hubby went, DJ went---even to laying outside the bathroom door waiting for Dad to finish his bath.

We now live in Missouri. Now it's Critter's turn to get special care. There are pictures of him on my Spark page.

Elsie

Burin Peninsula, Newfoundland, Canada. I have two dogs, both are pretty much mutts. One is 1/3 Chihuahua, 1/3 Terrier, and 1/3 mouth. Very noisy dog. His name is Spike. He's what I like to call a VSLD, or Very Serious Little Dog. The kind that only wags his tail when he's really happy , and usually only to me. Doesn't take to "babytalk" at all. All our dogs have been pampered and treated well, so it's just his way. Our other dog, Bonnie, was recieved from the local SPCA when her owner got too sick to look after her. Bonnie is a large sized dog, what the locals call a "rabbit dog" meaning of no real breed, but a sporting dog form. She's a nutball and not very bright, but pretty. Loves to be babied and snuggled with. Bonnie is currently battling a weird Lupus condition where her nails fall off, and Spike has allergies, but we're all getting along, taking life as it comes. :)

Hi! My dog Chi Chi is a Chihuahua mix, 20 years old; found her in a shelter when she was four months old. She has the run (trot) of my yard and the lot across from our house. I love her so much. We walk around the neighborhood here in Wilmington, North Carolina. It's the old part of town with large trees and as long as it's not too hot.

Hi, I'm Beth from the Seattle area. Even if I don't have time to do some kind of regimented exercise everyday, I try very hard to make sure my dog Jersey gets his 2 to 4 mile walk in daily. He is a rescue American Bulldog and has a HUGE amount of energy! I started walking him shortly after I got him to try and bring that energy level down, but it has also been great for my health too! I am excited to be here!
