There is a reason that German food tastes so good. We are genetically programed to like fatty foods, at least it sure seems that I am. I know that travelling through Europe, it seemed that the best tasting things were the dishes in the cream sauces -- Rahmschnitzel and the Spaghetti Carbonara, for instance. The first was a deep fried, coated pork steak covered in a white gravy (similar to Chicken Fried Steak, but using pork) and the latter a pasta dish with a similar white sauce and lots of Parmesan and Mozarella cheeses along with pancetta (similar to bacon, but without as much salt), onion, and chopped tomatoes. Of course the dishes in Italy also came with lots of fresh bread and in Germany, it seemed like everything came with about a pound of Pomes Frittes (thats French Fries in American).

George,
Some low calorie dishes can be quite good, but some foods just need to be sampled in moderation in all their splendor. Your smoked lamb is an example.

Small servings at the next potluck...

Mmmm...sounds delicious. My grandpa's family was from Germany, but we never ate traditional German dishes while I was growing up. My first experience with German cuisine was wonderful. I don't know if I love the food because of some hidden genetic trait or if I love it because it just tastes so good.

I ate Cordon Bleu the first time at a German Restaurant. It tastes like a German dish, so I don't know why it has a french name. I make it for my husbands birthday or other special days. I used to debone the chicken myself. Now it is so much easier to buy boneless meat.

I too avoid most German food like the plague since I don't get up at 3am to milk 20 head of cows like my ancestors. I just can't burn the calories.

Perhaps if you used mustard with no mayo, and limited the eggs, you could do a reasonable lo-cal potato salad. I know I never encountered one in Germany, and there were certainly a lot of varieties there. One of the really interesting ones may be adaptable to make it fit our needs. It was basically sliced boiled potatoes that were still a bit firm that were marinated in a vinaigrette type dressing, and served warm. I could see something like a balsamic vinegar with some garlic and green onion thrown in as being pretty tasty. I might have to try that.... emoticon

Hi Chris, Glad you are here. I think someone needs to bring a low cal potato salad to the potluck thread and some more conversation about their favorite vacation places. (Is there such a thing as low cal potato salad?)

Hi Chris, welcome to the group. I'm fairly new myself. I really like that there's a UM group. And I really like SP, too. I've lost 5 pounds so far and have started exercises (which I never wanted to do before now). Good luck!

Hi, I'm Chris and I'm a chubby Methodist. Found SP a few weeks ago, and have been feeling out various teams. Your team looks like a perfect fit for me. I'm looking forward to sharing with many of you, but I imagine there's no Pot Luck Supper to share..eh??
