The discouragement isn't new. It happens with new leaders and with experienced leaders. You need to ask yourself a couple tough questions:
1) what do you want the girls to get out of this experience
2) what do YOU want to get out of this experience

It's easy to get bogged down when you've got lots of good ideas but don't have supportive families or excited girls. Start with the girls to get their excitement brewing, then hold a parent/girl meeting where the girls can present their ideas of what they want to do directly to the parents. As a Junior leader, you can provide lots of opportunities for them to express their opinion AND have the parents see how cool the program is.

don't give up, it will get better.

Good luck with the flyers. I hope that lots of girls decide to come and check it out.

thanks, ms. petitgabrielle I'm a little discouraged with the whole girl scout thing right now. But I believe it happens alot with new leaders. I love that idea about the fun activity & "bring a friend" that sounds like it'll work. I just handed out flyers this past week at my local schools so wish me luck! yes thanks for welcoming me back & I really do hope to loose 35 lbs. but it's very challenging.

Hi Nicky-

Welcome back! I'm glad you have a new plan and I hope that it's working!

Regarding the troop, there's a couple things you can do. I don't know if your local schools will let you hold recruitment events-a flyer or a bracelet goes home and the girls and their parents come to an informational meeting. You could also have a "bring a friend" event, where each girl brings a friend to a fun activity. You could pair up with another troop in your area for activities which will encourage more participation.

Our troop has fluxuated in size over the years. We started with 6, then 13, then 18, then 12 now 8 as Cadettes. We're a busy troop and we expect the girls to fully participate which is why several dropped out. We plan our year with the girls and make sure they understand when the fun activities are coming. They want to reach the end goal so they're more willing to get through the harder planning stuff. We've been doing that since they were Juniors, and it's part of the girl/adult partnership.

Good luck!

Hi all you girl scout leaders, etc., glad to be back after a little while gone, keep gaining & loosing 5-10 lbs. I recently got the sparkebook & it had some great tips & insights as to what I was doing wrong. Anyway I'm a junior leader for my daughter & have just a small troop (3-4 girls) & only just 2 participate. Does anyone out there have any suggestions as to how I can get more girls?
In the meantime I've been volunteering for council events & helping out with the 100 year anniversary, they've decided to tie that into forever green. So we have really fun & events with this throught the year. My daughter & I are just having fun with it & she's getting new friends!
I'm in Miami, Florida

Your council should have a training on the journeys that can supplement what you are helping with. Any help is always great and it sounds like the ideas you have are the types of things it is harder to 'get' for new leaders.

I am a council trainer, but with the changes, not sure what is going to happen to the petals. I actually like the petals because really all you are doing is teaching the girls the Girl Scout Law and awarding them a petal for each part they learn. The petals are staying, but until we get the new girl scout guide books this fall, we won't know how national expects them to work into the journey program.

I do know that my current Juniors (that I have had since they were Daisy's) really know the law. They were the group that I focused on the petal with the most. This past year I had an adult offer to help and I focused on the Brownies while she focused on the Daisies. Nothing against her, she was a volunteer and hadn't received any training, but I do notice a difference in how well the newer girls know the law compared to my first group.

Keep Sparking!

Question--I have been asked to advise some new Daisy leaders. I do not like the journeys and didn't do petals (my girls are too old) but I did have an awesome Daisy troop--we did servuce projects, learned cool things and were excited about GS. If I offer to help with the standard things, can I just ignore the journey?? Would that be "fair" or not?

WelcomeI I have been a leader for many years--on my way out since the baby is graduating. But--I have "old" plans for Brownies and even Juniors--we met for about 2 hours right after school and I could cover a Try It in one session (most of the time). If you are interested in any Try Its, first buy them so they don't go "out of stock" and then let me know--I'll be happy to share plans (down to what to bring and how to set up) for them. I don't have ALL but I have likely done all--between 3 girls, they did virtually every Try It and badge. (Didn't get all the IPAs!) (And no journeys here--that is one reason I am NOT sticking around....)

Hey, y'all, I'm from GA and I am a first time leader. This is my daughter's 3rd year in Brownies. She joined when she was in 1st grade before the new realignment began. We have 21 girls and we are so blessed to have a leader, myself as co-leader and a wonderful parent volunteer who helps us out with crafts and planning neat field trips for our girls to go on. It is quite an effort on all of our parts to keep our girls entertained, but completely worth it!

No matter how bad you think you have it, someone else always has it worse. No matter how good you think you have it, someone always has it better.

Welcome to the team. Currently, I am not a leader but I am looking for a troop. I used to go to all the Service Unit Meetings, but they haven't sent me the reminders so that I will attend. I just gave one of the leaders a $180 nut and candy order since I don't have a troop. Isn't that nice to have that size order dropped in your lapped.

Welcome from Texas. I am a Cadette troop leader and SU team member. I love this team - it's really the only one I participate in. We are glad to have you. I know you will enjoy being a Brownie leader - they are so fun at this age.

Hi and Welcome to the team! You did exactly the same thing I did after my daughters first year, I became the leader, and now she's a Cadette and I'm still leading, and actively involved with my Service Unit team. You'll love it and do great! Don't hesitate to ask if you have questions!

If there is one thing we have here, it's ideas. We are full of them. Just ask and we'll tell.

Hi Everyone,

I have been a member of Spark for awhile, trying to get back on track (once again!) I am a new leader of a Brownie Troop with 18 girls. Last year was my daughter's 1st year and I took over this year as leader. I am trying to muddle my way through! So glad I found this team - hopefully I can pick up some tips from veteran leaders. I live in Central New York, about a 1/2 hour west of Syracuse.
