You know you're a penguin if…

On the 20 mile training race, all the volunteers, markers and aid stations are gone and all the used Gatorade cups already swept up and neatly bagged by the time you finish your last lap.

...if they pull the police protection and volunteers from the 10K course, and so you have to cross the road to run facing traffic, and so you can't see the chalked sidewalk arrow for the course turn, and so you go off-course and get completely lost and barely find your way back to the park where they start/finish. It was a bummer, I'll tell you. My first 10K.

I swear I spit my coffee out more times than I care to admit while reading!!!

I used to get lapped all the time in gym class--and was embarrassed by the teacher because he would yell at me to hurry up. Oh I wish I could go back and tell him I had undiagnosed asthma! I could tell him a few things now lol

You wish you were 3 months older to get 2nd place in the 50-54 age group instead of 6th place in the 45-49 age group since you were last finishing the race! Just happened last Sat in a small local race! emoticon

You called yourself 'Penguin' (aka Pinguina) before you even heard of John Bingham.

When you read Bingham's books, you laughed out loud because you recognized yourself, then cried because your childhood was so similar. I used to be physically active until it was made clear to me that I wasn't very good at it.

Your running club buddies come back to the finish line to cheer you on, after going home to take a shower, having lunch, walking the dog and watching a movie.

I feel as though I belong here! (Thanks, EarniesMom for posting the link to this team, on your page).

Linda,

I was in the 50 - 59 age category in my 10k on Sunday and there were nine other women in the category with me, and I came in dead last. :-)

I guess that makes me a penguin. :-)

Now if I can just get them to stay home next year.

As you're finishing a race, the clean-up truck is slowly driving behind you, picking up the hazard markers, because you finished dead last - yet, you're still thrilled because you're finishing your first marathon. (Well, someone's gotta be last - at least you got up off the couch!) emoticon

You finish your first full marathon - feeling 10 feet tall - only to find the podium photographer has already packed up and gone home...

I guess I should be thankful they were still handing out medals...

5:57 finish time BTW.

You win a first place medal even though you came in 10 minutes after everone else finished because there was no other female in the 50-59 age group entered in this small race. Actually happened to me. At first I felt foolish then after a while decided I was going to be proud that I actually got out there and did it. And as it has been pointed out to me, I was still faster than those sitting home on their couches doing nothing physical (like I was for many many years)

I KNOW I am a penguin.....

On an indoor track at my YMCA, where 7 laps = mile, in an indoor triathlon, (15 min swim, 15 min bike, 15 min run), my 10 yr old son (yes JUST turned 10) beat me in 2 out of 3 disciplines (he couldn't reach the pedals on the stationary bike, score 1 for mom.

AND lapped me 7 times in the 15 minutes!

You know you might be a penguin if...your very first race (2 miles) you have the cops right on your heels, watching you run and bringing up the rear of the racers.

I just told everyone I ran from the police for 22 minutes on a cold Saturday morning.

I was convinced that the policeman in the cruiser was saying to himself, "I could be drinking coffee and eating a donut right now with the other guys, but no...I have to follow this 30-something woman who is waaaay behind the other runners...."

Your 'Race Pace' isn't distinguishable from your 'Training Pace' by anyone but YOU! .... emoticon

Your 2 year old tells you 'run faster' and you've BEEN running as fast as you can to catch her.... emoticon

You finish a 10K in the same time it takes 'some runners' to finish a HALF-Marathon!... emoticon

.... people at the gym have to ask whether you're running or not.

I don't know the key to success, but the key to failure is trying to please everyone.

If you think you can't, you're right. If you think you can, you're right.

you get passed on the uphill by a runner pushing a double baby jog stroller.

You use BodyGlide so your thighs don't start a friction fire! The escort van is better than a firetruck :)

...if you have enough time to stop and thank volunteers at water stops.

...you have your own personal escort vehicle (race director in a golf cart) following behind you (the last runner) throughout the race.

...the awards ceremony is over before you cross the finish line.

(All of these have totally happened to me!)

you know you are a penguin if...
you know more about the people in the race's back-up van, than any fellow runner .

it looks like you are in the lead of the race, but the truth is, you are so far behind that all the other runners are about to lap you.
This was my experience running in gym class all through my childhood, lol.
