Hi everyone! I don't know exactly what a penguin runner is but I do feel like I waddle when I run! LOL I am starting the couch to 5k program on the first Monday in January. I have started running programs before and never completed them. This one is going to be different because I am going to sign up for a 5k in May, and I have a wonderful boyfriend who is very supportive and motivating and deployed! So I am trying to get into shape before he gets back! Anyways! Hi to all my fellow penguins!

Hi I'm a 55 yo who has never ever been a runner until I decided to start about 3 months ago. I saw this team and then did a search for the Penguin philosophy and just loved it and it certainly sounded like me!

Hello All! I too am of the 'penguin' persuasion. I often assure other runners that I am there as a reverse 'ringer', so everyone else can say they didn't come in last!

I am OK with it though, because 1 yr ago I would not have had the courage (or ability) to even put myself out in that place. Now I run/walk alternately through 5K's about once a month.

Hi!! I'm Bobbie and until today I never heard of a Penguin Runner so I decided to Google it. I came across John Bingham's website and started reading the You might be a Penguin if...I about fell out of my chair laughing...that is so me emoticon .

I started running last year but gave up because I wasn't fast...this year I started again and this time it was different I have stuck with it not because I got faster but because I have enjoy it. This coming from the girl that would take a zero in gym class rather than run a mile on the track.

I guess this makes me a Penguin!!

Happy Running ~Bobbie~

Hi, I'm Amanda and I am definitely a penguin. I love the books and am currently doing the C25K program. My goal is to one day follow the plan in Marathoning for Mortals and complete a marathon the penguin way. I look forward to meeting all of you:-)

Hi I'm Kathy. I too am a penguin. I used to run regularly years ago and then took a long, long hiatus. I just got back to running about a year ago and am enjoying it as much as I used to. I have never been fast at anything. I only have 2 speeds - slow and slower.

I haven't read the book, but I do just run for fun. Yeah, I'm trying to do better, but it's not about qualifying for anything epic. The epic is that I'm running at ALL.

Hi, I'm Nena. I'm married with one dog-child, and I am a runner. For fun.

hey all, just joined the team!

Need a bit of help... I'm 5" 3' 155 pounds, and maybe work out once a week... i have some knee pains, but at the same time i used to run 10ks about a year ago. Do you think i need to spend a year to get my body used to excersise again before i start the program, or can i do like the couch to 5k and then start a half marathon training program. (I want to run it not run/walk)

Thanks all and looking forward to hearing from you!!

Hey I am new to the team and new to running. John Bingham's book was the first book I read when I started about a month ago. I wanted to join a spark running team but none of them seem to fit until I saw this one. Pktrekgirl told me about it after reading one of my blogs.

I just ran my first 5K two days ago. What an incredible feeling. I think I am hooked. emoticon

Hi there. I'm new to spark. I signed up awhile ago but I dont think I did anything with my account... I'm a longtime penguin (in spirit). I haven't actually been running in months, but I'm starting to get the itch again. It seems to come around once a year for me. I love mister B and the hope that he has given me through the years.

Running is going to help me through the divorce that I'm currently feeling my way through.

I am new to this team, but not to running.

I used to be a reasonably decent runner, back in the day. But I have recently re-started a running program and have to start all over again, as a total penguin.

I don't care though - I refuse to be discouraged by what I used to be, and am accepting what I can do NOW.

I purchased one of John's books and it really made me think about how just getting out there and DOING something is the most important thing.

I might never be the runner that I once was...but I will be a runner again, and that is the most important thing!

Ask yourself each day: If you were to write the book of your life, would you want to read it?

Hello Everyone!
I am an emotional eater with a teenage daughter and have gained 30 pounds in the last three years. My brother is a runner and as I stood cheering him on last month at one of his half marathons, I decided if he can do it so can I! This is hilarious because I cannot even run for 4 minutes straight. I am going to get Johns courage to start book tomorrow and I am on an 8 week plan to get me running for 30 minutes straight.
Once I am running I hope to do a half marathon.
Reading over previous posts, maybe I should start with a 5K and then .....THE MARATHON!!!
Anyway, I look forward to my journey and the support I am going to get from my sparkpeople friends.

I just found this group. I love John's books. I had never been a runner, but in the last couple years have been getting more into it. I've done 3 5K's so far, doing another one in April and June. I'm kinda slow, but at least I'm running emoticon . My husband is a runner, he signed up for a marathon in April (my 5K is the day before). I told him that 5K's take everything out of me right now, that is like MY marathon. LOL. I'm going to start the weight program in the book. The weight programs I've done in the past are heavy lifting, and it kinda goes against whatever I'm doing for my running program. My last 5K time was 31:08, looking to do the next one in 30:30 (or less emoticon ).

Hi everyone.. My name is Ilka and I'm definately a penguin. I've always wanted to run but thought I couldn't. I'm plugging away 5days a week haven't been able to run a full mile yet but i'm working on it. Slow and steady. I have a 5k coming up in January that I would love to be able to run half of it if not all. My supervisor at work turned me on the John Bingham and I love his books.I'm glad to be part of the team.

I am joining this team because I am definitely a penguin! I tried running with some co-workers, but they had to walk back to get me after finishing the run. It was so discouraging that now I just waddle along on my own. I love being outdoors and running but I don't think I will ever be fast.

Hi I am slow at just about everything and that includes running. I trained and did a triathlon in May 2009. I tore up my ankle so it hurts after the run however I realise the tri training is excellent for my lungs and asthma problems so I want to get back to it. I stopped training or doing any exercises between June and October and promptly gained 8-10 pounds.

Whew that was a mouthful. Anyway it was nice to see a group of people who don't care where they come as long as they keep doing. Thanks for having this group.

Hello everyone! I decided to join this group because I am definitely a penguin. I've been a runner for about a year now and I love it. I have run in one 5k, Done 2 of the 3 parts of a sprint triathlon (the run and the swim), and run a 8k race. My next 5k is on halloween and my big goal is to run in a progressive marathon next spring. The pinnacle of the progressive marathon is a half-marathon. I'm really excited about it.

Hi my name is April. I'm here because I've decided to participate in the Eat Clean Diet Challenge on www.eatcleandiet.com. I've put on 36 pounds since getting married about 3 years ago but I think my antidepressants really sped up the weight gain. I would like to at least get back to that weight if not 10 to 15 pounds lighter

Howdy all,

Just wanted to say hello. I am 38 years old, and a beginning penguin. At 6'2", 265 lbs, I'm certainly not the most graceful thing you've ever seen.

Yesterday, I started the C25K program. My goal is to be able to run for a 1/2 hour sometime this fall, and to run a 5K.

I'm using 'The Courage To Start' as my inspiration; I'm finding Sparkpeople is a great resource as well!

Best,
Jason

Hi Everyone!

I'm so excited to become a Penguin! I just started reading the book and so far I'm really liking it.

Running is a dream I've had for a very long time - but have always considered myself "too fat". Well, time to change that thinking!

As motivation to get moving, my sister and I joined the Disney Princess Half Marathon for March 2010. HOLY SMOKES! I still can't believe we committed to that - especially since I don't even WALK at the moment. Major transformation about to be underway!

I look forward to posting with all of you and picking your brains on this whole process. 273 days until my run!!!!

Lisa

Hey everybody..
I'm Erin and I'm a 20 year old student in Philadelphia, PA. I just found this group today (as I RE-joined SparkPeople) and I realized that Penguin is Me! My first and only race was a 5 mile in March of 2008. It felt SO good to cross that finish line. I ran it with my boyfriend and his family (almost all of them are runners!) and for me (someone with short little legs that can't run all that fast) to cross the finish line with a family full of runners felt AMAZING! It's been a year and a half since that race and I've been toying with the idea of a big race. I chickened out on a 10 mile race held here in Philadelphia last month and I felt TERRIBLE afterwards.
I'm a little nervous to admit this but...
I'm going to run the Philadelphia Half-Marathon on Sunday November 22, 2009.
There... I SAID IT! Now I HAVE to do it!!!

ANY Progress Is Good Progress!

Hi all! Been waddling for 3 weeks after 2 years of walking and elliptical training. Didn't realize I could run until I just started running one afternoon on the treadmill. Couldn't go fast or far, but it was running, penguin style! Read one of John Bingham's books and just howled with joy when I read how he described his body: long torso, short legs. That's me, too! If he can overcome bad design, so can I.

This Saturday, BETTY925 and I will be running in the Highway 61 Blues 5K along the shady banks of beautiful Deer Creek. I'm so excited I may not sleep a wink Friday night. I'm hoping to beat my 5K walking time (42 mins), but I'll be happy to stumble across the finish line upright, no matter how long it takes to waddle there.

Linda

Hi all! My name is Laura and I just started my 5K training on Friday. When I went out on my first group run in over 3 years, I was sure I would be at the back. Not only was I but joined by two novice runners who I was happy to cheer on. Did a Learn To Run course in 2004 when I was 80lbs heavier and sadly injured myself and gained more weight. I have since lost 110 with my main and strongest motivation to run again. I am finally there and now am on a journey of maintenance and constant improvement.

Still want to lose 25lbs or so, but more importantly want to work up to the Outer Banks Half Marathon in November of 2010. Have already signed up for my graduation 5K race in July and plan to run a 10K at Niagara in October.

Delighted to find other Penguins!! Waddle On Friends!!

Cheers,
Laura

Hi everyone, My name is Cindy and I joined the team last week. Didn't have time to write anything or really go through the message board yet though.

I love the Penguin articles in Runners World as I can so relate. I am a slow runner for sure, and actually more of an on again, off again runner who is just getting back into the swing of things.

Hey guys!

I'm Heather, I'm 34, and I'm definitely a penguin. I have asthma, and I took up running for the fun of it - I have a crazy friend who swore it was awesome - and I stayed because it actually helps me have fewer attacks. The year before this I had bronchitis for about six months, so the fact that I can run at all is a miracle to me. I'm reading "No Need for Speed" right now and I love it!

See, the human mind is kind of like ... a pinata. When it breaks open, there's a lot of surprises inside. Once you get the pinata perspective, you see that losing your mind can be a peak experience.

I am happy to find some other Penguins! I just read The Courage to Start yesterday and had tears in my eyes a few times because it really struck a chord in me. About five years ago I started running and fell in love. Did one 5K at 32 mins and thought I was a rock star (cause I was). Life got in the way, had a baby...and now I am getting back into running and fitness in general. I am not fast, but I am determined. I love the strength and power I feel when I am testing and using my body. It's amazing. I plan on doing my first half this November. I just have to sign up! :) And I'm looking for my first 5K in the next month - just have to sign up!
Thanks for all the inspiration and encouragement, you penguins!

First race in over 5 years: May 25th: 5K

Long term goal: Wear a bikini on vacation in September

Medium term Goal:
Finish a 5K in under 30 minutes.

Short term goal:
Lose 5 pounds by June 1

Hey everyone-

I'm excited to find you. I just joined sparkpeople a few days ago, after a co-worker told me about it, and low and behold- fellow penguins!!! I have tried to start running many times over the years, but was not really successful. Then, I was in Border's one day and found "Running for Mortals" and it changed my life. I laughed so hard I was crying when John described his first run, because it sounded so familiar!!! I successfully followed the 5K program, and then the 10K program last summer (by that I mean I crossed the finish line upright, even if they were already starting to pack up!), and now consider myself a runner, even if sometimes it looks more like a waddle. Unfortunately, last October I injured my hip and ended up having orthopedic surgery Feb. 16th, so I haven't run since the fall. I did not scale back my eating, so I gained back the little bit of weight that I had lost by running. I honestly get tears in my eyes when I see other runners, I miss it so much, so I must be hooked! My surgeon says I should be able to run (slowly!) by June or July, so I am trying to be patient (not one of my strong suits) and work hard in PT and do everything I am supposed to do. I am signed up for the Avon Breast Cancer 3-Day in August, so am looking forward to that, and maybe a 5K in the fall. I'm really glad to meet you all!! emoticon soon to be emoticon

Hi all!

It's so nice to see a board dedicated to those of us who are not speed demons, but LOVE to run nevertheless!

It's been such a surprise to me to enjoy it so much, after years of being such a couch potato that walking sometimes was more than I wanted to do. I'm not fast or long distance, but I love the feeling running gives me.

Looking forward to getting to know ya'll better!

I don't know the key to success, but the key to failure is trying to please everyone.

If you think you can't, you're right. If you think you can, you're right.

Hi everyone! I have been running for about 2 years now and love to do races even though I am slow as heck. I ran a half marathon back in October and saw 2 ladies pass me. One had "turtle" on the back of her shirt and the other had "snail". I spent a few miles wondering what was slower than a snail because that's me. emoticon I do love it though.

hi!

I read the Courage to Start a few years ago and did a 5k, but then slowly got away from slowly running. Anyhow, I signed up for a turkey trot on Thanksgiving, but haven't really trained for it. I did run one mile last week, and I'll get out this weekend and see how far I can go.

Do you think I should just show up for the run on Thursday anyhow, and see how it goes? I'm thinking I can always walk it.

Hi, my name is Marit, and I've stumbled across Bingham liking what I have read. So I ordered The courage to start last week. I'm waiting for it in the mail any day now.
I've already started, though. Finished the C25K program and I waddle three times every week in my own tempo, enjoying the empowering feeling immensely and working on building my endurance and also lose some of my extra padding.
When races start again in spring I'm going to sign up for my very first 5K and see whether I like to cross a finish line (I expect I'll be over the moon about it).

Hi,

I've been doing "events" (don't like the term race since I'm not racing anyone but myself) for a few years. I've been part of the Half-Marathon group but have realized that they are a little too hard core for me - it's a little disheartening to see someone post about their disappointing time and it was 30 minutes faster than your own personal best. I'm slow but steady, never going to break any records, but just happy to be able to do it at all.

One of my favorite books is "Slow Fat Triathlete" - her philosophy is that if you wait until you're "in shape" to be "athletic" you'll never do it. I took that to heart and did my first tri this last summer. Quite the rush!!!

The world bursts at the seams with people ready to tell you you’re not good enough. On occasion some may be correct. But do not do their work for them. Seek any job; ask anyone out; pursue any goal. Don’t take it personally when they say “no” – they may not be smart enough to say “yes.”

Hi everyone! I just picked up Running for Mortals at the library and read the first five chapters on my lunch. I have Marathoning for Mortals on hold and can't wait to read that as well. I'm so excited to find this team!

Way to go, Susan! I admire your tenacity--sticking it out for 15 months, in spite of your obstacles! I have been running for about 6 months, and have nearly given up a number of times, but frankly, am just too stubborn I guess! Great job on your first 1/2 marathon this fall, and good luck on the second!! You inspire me!

I am 34 years old and have just started running, well waddling. I am on week 4 of the couch to 5k program. I want to run a 5k by October. I hope to do the couch to 10k program after that and so on...I have watched my husband do 3 marathons in the past and I love watching the ironman triathalon on tv. I just think it would be amazing to have that feeling of accomplishment to finish something like that. I've always said in the past that I didn't like running but this time I am really enjoying it so far. This is the first time I've gone outside to run and not just inside a gym. We use to get runners world and I always read the penguins!!! articles. I haven't timed myself yet but I know I run/jog so slow but when I am by myself I feel like I am running fast until someone else passes me :-) then laps me :-) I just try to smile and keep on movin'. I look forward to talking to everyone.

Hi everyone,
I am 39 years old (40 in October - Thanksgiving Monday to be exact) and I have been married for almost 10 years to the wonderful (an often frustrating) love of my life (Kevin). We have no children (but not for lack of trying) but we do have joint custody of a 6 1/2 year old Siberian Husky named Holly (we share her with my parents who live 1 1/2 blocks away from us).
My husband is my best friend (and often partner in crime when it comes to food and inactivity).
I live in Toronto, Ontario CANADA.
I have been running for about 15 months now on and off (sometimes more off than on - last winter was quite snowy and I hate treadmills so running was put on hold from the beginning of January through to the end of March)
I am registered for TWO half-marathons this fall - Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront (Sept 28) and Niagara Falls International (Oct 26). The two runs bracket my 40th birthday - two weeks before and two weeks after.
I love Marathoning for Mortals and have nicknamed myself "The Turtle".
Susan

Scheduled Events:
Toronto Waterfront Half-Marathon - 3hr 21min 45sec
CIBC Run for the Cure 5K - Oct 5
OASIS zoorun 10K - Oct 18
Niagara Falls Half-Marathon - Oct 26
Whitby Waterfront 10K - Nov 23

Today I ran...

...50 minutes without walking.

The problem is that I am extremely slow (can be overtaken by walkers) !!!!
It was raining and cold outside today (North of England) and decided to go to the local community centre as we now live in the middle of nowhere and too far to register to any gym.

I was dreading having to go there since they have only 3 treadmills and are stuck to a giant mirror so the only thing you see is you.
I tried to offer my other half to go with me but he wasn't interested the least.

I went anyway and picked up a rubbish magazine about celebrities. The combination of music and magazine kept me going. I was so proud of myself.

Now, I have a question since I am a newish jogger/runner:

*after how many runs of 30+ minutes can I say that I can run it (meaning not just a fluke)
* what next to keep on progressing maybe not just in time but in speed/ calorie spending?

Thanks to all who congratulated me. It was really nice and extremely motivating.. emoticon

I'm definitely in the slow, waddle, walk categories! But I'm making progress... (slowly!)

Hi, all! I'm new here and thought I should introduce myself! I've been walk/wogging (isn't that what John Bingham calls it??) for about 3 months now, and feel that I've kind of hit the wall as far as progressing. I felt my dedication and excitement for it starting to fade, and so I thought joining this forum might help keep me going and get me more motivated to do my runs consistently. This looks like a great community and very supportive! I'm happy to be here and look forward to getting to know y'all!

I'm another slow runner with short legs! Last March my wife ran her first half-marathon and I had so much fun on the sidelines that I started running. It's gotten a lot better now that I'm 40+ pounds lighter, but I'm still slow!

So far I have some 5k's under my belt, a half marathon and am running the Peachtree Road Race 10k on July 4th.

I love the Penguin books and articles - I don't have to feel like an inferior runner just because I hover around 11-12 min/mile!

Hello! I'm a very slow runner too. I think it's because my legs are short. Anything over 4 miles per hour is running for me.

Welcome!! Oh, I think the treadmill is great for running. I do most of my miles on the treadmill. The weather is always good on the treadmill, so I can't use that excuse. It forces me to keep my pace consistent and it tells me the calories I burned.

It gets kind of boring, but listening to music helps me. I've found that I can't watch televison and run, because I slow down. I listen to Christian rock mostly. That keeps my mood up and my running fast.

If I didn't have the treadmill, my running would be very limited. The weather here is either too hot, too cold, or wet. We don't have alot of in between.

New penguin here! I am 51 years old and have never ran much. I have done exercise classes at the Y a few years back so I am not new to exercising just the running part. Last year I started walking/running and have done it off and on since then (more off than on I am afraid). But I am excited about starting to do this regularly. I have only run on my treadmill indoors. I tried outside one day, on pavement in my neighborhood and it was HARD! Nothing like my treadmill. I have not tried that since but would like to. I hesitate to run outside because of my size. I am too self conscious about that. I have lost 45 pounds but still have about 55 more to go. I hope that running will help me get and keep this extra weight off.

I am glad to be here and I hope to learn a lot from you all.

Welcome everyone! Sorry I havent been posting a lot.
I am getting my days organised. At the moment I am getting over another chest infection.

I got a bit lost on all the exercise challenges I had committed to, then forgot some! But I have them all down on some paper on my wall now - they are an exciting way to increase my exercise!

I have laid off the running for a little while due to this recurring chest thingy, but am walking.

Will try to post more often and try to help make this a dynamic, fun team!

Hello fellow penguins! I have never read John Bingham's book but I found an article by him about penguin running that completely described my experiences running. I'm so happy to know I'm not the only one who is a totally ungifted runner but still loves it. I'm very excited to find this group.

I am running in a Halloween 5K this evening - in costume (this is how serious a runner I am). I'll be dressed as the slowest Wonder Woman ever but it should be fun and the after party is always great.

Greetings all, great to find this team. I'm reading the Courage to Start right now, found out about it halfway through my first fitness Bootcamp (www.operationbootcamp.com) and felt so affirmed by Bingham's experiences. I blog regularly about bootcamp, it has changed my life. I was TOTALLY sedentary 6 weeks ago, I decided to sign up on a spur of the moment and haven't looked back. I've never stuck with anything longer than a week or two before and not only did I complete the 4 week camp, I've been continuing to work out with instructors and I just ran my first 5K this past Saturday!

Anyway, it's a complete shock to me that I could ever be considered a "runner", but I'm running . . . so I guess I'm a runner. WIERD.

Looking forward to following along with you guys!

I just started reading this book. I was thinking about starting a team like this, but I found out this was already here. I noticed that there wasn't a team leader listed. I wonder how we would go about getting a leader.

Hello everyone! I'm Jenny. Just joined Spark people and glad to find other penguins! Been a penguin now for 7-8 years - cant quite remember. Member of the penguin email lists since early 2000. I still waddle and shuffle along! I get going toward my goals, then have often let life get in the way. Have just moved house and am surrounded now by bush and a huge web of bike paths. Looking forward to exploring them all. One day plan to do a marathon, but at the moment looking at a couch to 10k program. (about 13 weeks)

Jenny (SUNPANTHER) Melbourne, Australia

I will be resolute in consistently following the plans I put in place.
I will be resolute in staying the distance.
I will be resolute in making my health and self-care a priority
I will be resolute in keeping a clean kitchen

I will be a renegade against any bad habits and inner criticisms that seek to derail my resolutions.

Wow, there really is a group for everyone on this site. Color me impressed. :)

Hi everybody! I'm new to Spark, but not new to Penguin Running; four years ago I used the running plan outlined in "Marathoning for Mortals" to do my first (and as of today, only) half-marathon. I just recently picked up "Running for Mortals"; Like Erika said, I felt really powerful and strong while training for that half-marathon and I want to recapture that feeling.

While most of "Running for Mortals" is a bunch of rah-rah cheerleading, I do like the actual running stuff, and I'm currently on my second week of the 5K run plan. (My fiance's doing the run-walk weight-loss plan.) I hope to one day - probably next year - get back on the marathoning track, because it was so much fun!

Welcome Ms. Bookdragon!

I wish you the best on your new walking/running quest! Over the last year, during which I ran my first marathon (yea!), I didn't lose a bit of weight, though. (I need to focus more on the intake side of the equation, and now I am working on that.) So don't be disappointed if running doesn't help you lose the weight you think you will.

But the feeling of sheer POWER and health that comes from being able to complete long distances is amazing. I have kept up my weekend long runs (10+) miles and am planning to do another half-marathon soon. It is truly fun and I am hooked!

My goals:
1. Accept and be grateful for my body and my metabolism as they are. No feeling sorry for myself.
2. Follow a healthy eating plan (such as WW). No guilt when I am unable to do this perfectly. When I get off track, get back on ASAP.
3. Remind myself that there is no finish line, this is for life.

Hi there Ms. Bookdragon!

I haven't read Courage to Start yet, but I have read Running for Mortals and Marathoning for Mortals. I am currently training for my first half-marathon (in Oct).

I find his books incredible for the amount of practical knowledge for newbie runners as well as for being inspirational, for non-athletic types like me!!!

I'm not through with the book yet but I LOVE it. Right now I'm working on getting rid of all the "should"s I can.
