Where in the world do you live? New York City, but I'm from Massachusetts.

How long have you been on ETL? I was on it for about a year in college, and lost 50 lbs or so. Then went off it, gained back some weight, and 7 years later I've decided to go all the way with it. Back in college I made my mom read it too, and she's been a vegan ever since.

What attracted you to this way of eating? I have an enormous appetite and I also have very serious shin splints problems as a result of bad training in high school softball, so exercise can be tough for me. Also once I read ETL (and a couple of other books) I became so hyper-aware of all the pollutants in most commercially available food that if I actually think about what's in it, it makes me queasy.

Date joined Spark? A few days ago.

What is your favorite fruit? Pineapple and mango, although I do not have any kind of a sweet tooth, so I don't eat as much fruit as I should. It's why I've started making smoothies.

What is your favorite vegetable? Bell peppers!

Goal Weight? 150 (I'm 208 now)

How are you going to reward yourself when you reach your goal? New clothes and new confidence.

What is your favorite exercise? Weight training

What is your favorite healthy food? Hummus with pepper strips.

What is your best personality trait? I'm pretty hilarious, but I probably don't have many other good personality trait.

What is your favorite hobby? Not working.

Two random facts about yourself. I'm a set designer and propmaster for movies and TV shows, and I own a fully functional centrifuge, if anyone needs some vials of blood spun at high velocities.

Where in the world do you live? Newtown, CT

How long have you been on ETL? This is my second day.

What attracted you to this way of eating? Everything that Dr. Fuhrman stated in his book makes total sense. I've wanted to eat this way for years...but thought it would be too difficult. I am 61 years old and relativelly healthy, and I want to get even healthier, which I believe can be achieved.

Date joined Spark? February 2010. Now it's time to rock this journey. Starting weight 193, goal weight 155.

What is your favorite fruit? I have too many favorites, but I guess I would have to say pineapple.

What is your favorite vegetable? Asparagus for sure!

Goal Weight? 155

How are you going to reward yourself when you reach your goal? Walking around in my new body with a smile on my face is reward enough.

What is your favorite exercise? Weight training

What is your favorite healthy food? Gotta be any kind of fruit.

What is your best personality trait? Kind and friendly.

What is your favorite hobby? Reading.

Two random facts about yourself. I work with Autistic kids and I'm a Kripalu certified yoga teacher.

Where in the world do you live?
I live in the beautiful Smoky Mountains

How long have you been on ETL?
Ate the ETL way all last Summer and felt great. once school/work started again, I fell away from the plan due to lack of planning and I am feeling the unfortunate results! I have returned to my addictive eating habits and feel horrible. I am coming back to ETL because I found it so healthy and energizing.

What attracted you to this way of eating?
I wanted to be able to eat as much as I needed to feel full and I wanted to be very healthy.

What attracted you to this way of eating? I've been reading up on nutrition since I was pregnant 3 years ago, so I've known this is the right way to eat. I'm just now to the point where I'm ready to give things up!

I like smoothies too..I have been trying to incorporate more greens in my diet lately. I have been making them with some frozen spinach, frozen mixed berries, frozen banana, almond milk, a little agave syrup and some almond butter, and a little bit of a green nutritional powder. The consistency changes if I add more spinach or more of one berry than another..or more milk. What do you add to yours??

I'm Heidi, originally from Boston, have been in Oakland CA for 23 years. Always aware of what I've eaten, tried to be 'healthy' and incorporate exercise. Last 15 years weight has slowly crept up to where i'm thirty lbs heavier I know what i need to do..just trying to fine tune what I eat and manage trigger foods and times better...exercise smarter and get more weightlifting in to increase metabolism. I am looking forward to reading ETL when it comes in..not sure which version it is..as it is used. I can't wait..I hope this gives me the motivation i need to kickstart this process of recommitmet. I've been on sparkpeople off and on since 2003 i think.

Favorite fruits: Mango, berries, banana...favorite exotic fruit..Mangosteen from Southeast Asia, they are all over Thailand where I've visited twice so far, and are out of this world!

Favorite Vegetable: Does garlic fries count?? Seriously folks...I do cook most nights, and love to find new ways to incorporate all the unlimited veggies. I especially like cruciferous veggies like broccoli, cauliflowers (including purple and yellow when i can find them), zucchini..eggplant.

Favorite exercise: I walk most days, elliptical most days..swm, but haven't lately..need to recommit to gym, have a love/hate relationship with yoga, like gentle weightlifting when i do it.

Favorite thing to do: I could live in foreign marketplaces..the sights, sounds. smells, tastes. I'll try anything. Fried grasshoppers, no problem. Quail eggs, right on! Raw oysters, bring 'em on.
Would I eat this stuff everyday?? No..but I am working on 'crowding out' alot of these foods with more nutrient dense...foods..just need some delicious ideas?? Comments would be welcome from longtime members..and how you've gotten to where you are..with stories and recipes too

How long have you been on ETL? I'm reading the book now and hope to start after I finish and get prepared (ie, budgeting.) I'm already trying to cut back on my fat and salt intakes.

What attracted you to this way of eating? I believe it's the healthiest lifestyle I can have, and after my mom died of heart failure in December, I knew I needed to make a drastic change.

Date joined Spark? can't remember - I've tried it on and off during calorie-counting restrictive dieting. I started tracking again last month when I went vegan to make sure I was eating adequately. :)

What is your favorite fruit? that's tough... pink lady apples? pineapple? all of it? I LOVE fruit.

What is your favorite vegetable? spinach, sweet potatoes, tomatoes.... okay, yeah. guess what, I love veggies, too. going vegan was sort of inevitable. :)

Goal Weight? 100lbs. (I'm 4' 11".)

What is your favorite exercise? I love the elliptical and am hoping to get my own next month.

How long have you been on ETL?: 1 Day

What attracted you to this way of eating?: I knew that "everything in moderation was wrong" and it's more important to get healthy than to lose weight. I was already trying to eat more fruits and veggies, this is just a more extreme version of that. :P

What attracted you to this way of eating? I had read Fast Food Nation and ordered books like Omnivore's Dilema, but when Amazon reccomended this book to me, I read the sample on Kindle and it just MADE SENSE! I was highly suspicious of 'diets' and this isn't.

Hi everyone!

I just joined today and I hope to be active and helpful as well as receiving help & accountability on this forum. Sparkpeople is VAST and I don't feel like I've got the hang of it by any stretch... so for now I've just joined this group and may branch out later :)

Here's my basic info:

How long have you been on ETL? A month

What attracted you to this way of eating? I did McDougall many years ago and thrived. I somehow left that behind, sadly, and went down a low carb route for a long time which really isn't for my metabolism (which I didn't realise) - I failed more times than I care to count. It's only recently that I've broken through the low-carb brainwash and rediscovered vegan eating; this time Fuhrman. I'm on this to stay... enough experimentation for a lifetime.

How are you going to reward yourself when you reach your goal? Will see! - will see what my life situation is like then. Because in a few months a few big things may be changing.

What is your favorite exercise? ouch, exercise, my weak spot. I've signed up for the local gym and paid for an 18-month membership, so I had better be using it. I have yet to get myself there for the first time...!!

What is your favorite healthy food? Banana ice cream (frozen bananas blended with some soy milk, optional sweetener & cocoa powder)

Hi everyone, happy to have found this group! Apart from my husband, everyone else I know is of the "Ooooh! I could never do that" mentality - I think they think we're crazy!

Where in the world do you live? Angus, Scotland
How long have you been on ETL? Been vegetarian for well over 20 years, but ETL since January 2011
What attracted you to this way of eating? It suits my tastes and beliefs. Had read the book years ago, but hadn’t been following it strictly. Got a fright when I discovered my blood-sugar was too high (love carbs!) so gave it a “proper” go 4 months ago and my weight and my blood glucose levels have dropped significantly.
Date joined Spark? 2007 but not been on site for ages - then I discovered this ETL group! Hooray!
What is your favorite fruit? Strawberries

What attracted you to this way of eating? Originally my naturopath recommended that I start eating a plant based diet. He gave me bunch of information but I needed recipes. I found this SparkTeam while looking for recipe ideas. It was funny because I already had Dr. Fuhrman's 2 book set called "Eat for Health". I just hadn't started reading it yet. I decided to start. Then, in an effort to make more progress, I bought the book on CD. Next I will listen to Eat to Live. I've started Phase 1 in Eat for Health. I'm so excited!

Hey--I'm Jude I found Eat to Live recently through someone else's post. I've been researching this morning and found a great blog and Yahoo group too

Where in the world do you live? Virginia

Just started this morning.

I have 3 vegan kids, My BMI is just over 31 & high cholestrol

I've been on Sparks since fall of '06 (gained 20 lb since then!)

What is your favorite fruit? too many--mango, all berries, melon

What is your favorite vegetable? Again so many! Brocoli, kale, not much I don't like

Goal Weight? 145--top of my BMI is the most realistic for me.

How are you going to reward yourself when you reach your goal?
A cruise would be nice--hahaha--all that food! What a great challenge!
Clothes/Spa Retreat would also be nice!

What is your favorite exercise? walking - curves w/ Zumba

What is your favorite healthy food? chickpeas/beans,

What is your best personality trait? I'm a great communicator, I listen to what others are really saying and make them comfortable with what ever they are feeling.

Hi, my name is Karena. I read ETL and the China Study years ago, made the switch, but then began experimenting with "faking" all the things we were missing: fake meats, baking w/out eggs, faking cheesy sauces, etc. I found myself not losing & decided this lifestyle wasn't for me. It took a couple years for me to wake up & realize the lifestyle wasn't the problem, it was my approach. Back to do it for real.


Where in the world do you live? Belgium (American expat)

How long have you been on ETL? I'm not yet :) But I am healthy vegan at the moment; will probably start in the next couple days once I plan out a menu.

What attracted you to this way of eating? read The China Study and ETL. Now that I'm more interested in health than weight loss it seems even more compelling.

Joined Spark? Feb 2011, but not for the first time :)

What is your favorite fruit? fresh strawberries

What is your favorite vegetable? mesclun

Goal Weight? 130, although once I get there that may change. Dr. Fuhrman would put my ideal lower than that.

Middle Tennessee

How long have you been on ETL?
For almost 2 weeks. I started on 3/5/11.

What attracted you to this way of eating?
Mostly weight loss. I want to lose a substantial amount of weight and become a lot healthier. I tried doing it my own without a plan, and that was not working out super well. I noticed one of my buddies here on SP talking about ETL, and I thought I'd look into it.

Goal Weight?
Somewhere between 145 and 160. I want to get in that range and just stop where I feel healthy. I'm not 100% sure what my healthy/ideal weight is yet!

Just read the book two days ago! Just started the plan today.

What attracted you to this way of eating?
I survived cancer (so far), but have a very high risk of recurrence. I am just trying to do everything in my power to lower my risks.

Actually, I read about being a nutritarian, and that really attracted me. I'm also a former vegetarian, and I lost a ton of weight eating similarly to this.

Date joined Spark? I've been a member off and on for a few years. I lost a significant amount of weight a few years ago by counting calories, but could not maintain due to hunger, which so far seems not to be an issue at all on ETL.

What is your favorite fruit? Bananas

What is your favorite vegetable? Kale - Which I just tried a few days ago - I LOVE it!

Goal Weight? 140lbs or thereabouts

I live in New York.
I have been moving in the ETL direction for the past two months. I am totally there with my breakfast and lunch meals. Wish I could make the full switch and am hoping to with the help of this team!
His book just makes sense. And is backed up by scientific studies.
I joined SparkPeople in 2008...I think.
My favorite fruit is any kind of berry, and my favorite vegetable is probably asparagus.
My goal weight is 120, and I'm going to reward myself with clothes...lots of them!
I love roller skating (quads), roller derby, and running. Pilates is great too.
My favorite healthy food is nuts. I ¢¾ them, but have a tendency to overeat them in extremes so I am attempting to use avocadoes for my fat at first.
I knit, and that's probably my favorit hobby.
Two random facts: I have three dogs, two goats, two snakes, and a bearded dragon for pets. :) I will be going skydiving for the first time in 2011!
