It can be expensive but very well worth it and I hope you eventually do get to go to one. Maybe that can work its way into your goals/rewards (if it isn't there already). I have only been twice. I have been to and love to watch other sports (I pretty much love all the main stream ones) but NOTHING beats going to a NASCAR race.

If it counts, my baby sister does like 18... he somehow made an impression on her when she got his autograph... AND **gasp** his car number is 18 and her birthday is December 18th. (Breaking it down, she doesn't really care for NASCAR but likes cheering someone on when dad and I are watching it...)

I'm jealous of you guys that have been to races. I'm 300 miles from Texas Motor Speedway (where Kasey's won twice!) and never been :( One day, though :)

I choose to ignore Baby Bush, just like we did his brother when he was in his whiney stage. He finally grew up and has become decent, a trait it doesn't seem he has passed down as yet.

So let's ask... ANY #18 fans out here?

I seriously think the people that would send hate mail really take NASCAR a little too seriously. Everybody has their own favorite driver and everybody has their list of driver's they hate. You have no idea how many times I have heard 'Kasey is only famous for his looks' and stuff along those lines. I don't like 18, 42, or 48. I don't especially care for 14. I think that if anyone were to honestly get offensive about it I would probably laugh. It is just like every other SPORT out there. You have your favorites and you have the ones you favor to lose.

P/S Thank you guys for keeping this thread going. The more chances I get to respond (especially about NASCAR) the more reason I like sparkpeople. I like it for the weight loss accountability. I love it for the topics/groups I hold dear to my heart.

No hate mail from me. I just still like Jr. Was it his fault that the lug nut got dropped and he had to go a lap down because of it after being in the lead. I think not. But agree maybe his confidence has slipped. I agree with your othes in the hate list. the other 2 are not my favorites at all and try rooting for someone else if they are in the lead. Ops I really dont care for #18 right now. Sorry but he was not on your good list either

Agreed on both :) Especially Montoya!!!! Kyle redeemed himself a teensy bit the last time I went to the race... He went through the ENTIRE autograph line, which was long, unlike some drivers who avoided it at all costs (Johnson and Earnhardt), or Carl Edwards who signed one and said he had to get going to the Nationwide race.. which he did, but Kyle did too! Still don't like Kyle but I like him a teensy bit more :)

Rebecca thanks for sharing your story about your experience concerning Kasey. I can see why that made you feel special that Kasey saw you and gave you that 2 thumbs up. I would have been thrilled also and remembered it also. Not silly at all. I wish some of those Jr fans were not so opinionated but have seen on TV how some act. I like many drivers but jr has always been my favorite. It has nothing to do with his dad as I did not really like Dale Sr.

You won't be getting any hate mail from me :)

I actually agree fully with The Cheater (I myself call him that frequently). I halfly agree with Junior. I used to not like him at all but I feel bad... NOT that his dad died, which is horrible, but because he has done so horrible... and since he has so many fans he is in a more critical spotlight than the not-so-big drivers who also don't win. As for the boy, I have to like him. My dad likes him for whatever reason and I have never been one brave enough to bash my dad's taste in sports :)

Well if you want to see some varying opinions this will bring them out...

On the do not like list we have
The Cheater (48)
The boy/man (24)
and Junior
Junior is only driving Cup because of his Father, Rick Hendrick and Darrel Waltrip. I think everyone thought he would start winning when he was given the Hendrick equipment (me included). I even predicted he would win a championship in his second year with the 88. Mark is driving the same equipment, they have changed crews from top to bottom and still can't make it work. That kinda indicates the driver might be the issue.

On MY good list: 14, 99, 26, 42, 16, 5, 9 pretty much anybody except the first list LOL

Let the hate mail begin.

Tammy- I hear it all the time about the stereotypical NASCAR fan. I really have no hope at this point of Kasey winning the chase so I am pulling for Mark Martin more than a couple of the others (dare I say it... I also hope for Gordon too as my dad is a really big fan). Anybody but Johnson :)

LLBRCFAN- I don't mind Jr. Wouldn't go so far as to call me a fan but I like him a lot better now-a-days then when I first started watching. Actually got to be within mere feet of him this past Spring. He was in the Acceleration tent at MIS (don't know if every track does such a tent or not). Didn't take any close up pictures as the little crowd went nuts taking them but I did shoot one on our way out :)

It is a silly story, I promise. My first time ever going to a NASCAR race was 2005. This also happens to be the summer I found out I had skin cancer (please don't anybody make a big deal about it because I don't think it was. It was a tiny spot they were able to cut out of my arm and I think kudos are better deserved going to people that actually had to go through chemo). Anyways, the race was in the middle of my testing to see how far it spread, so I did not know at that point it was just a spot and even though I was really excited to be at a race, my mind sometimes would drift elsewhere and probably wasn't the best experience I could have had. Back to story... during the driver introductions/drive around the track we were seated behind some Jr fans that were really... opinionated (not at ALL saying that all Jr fans are, but these ones were) and they would 'boo' every driver that went around. Well, when Kasey came around, I stood up and tried to cheer louder than they were booing and he looking right at me in my Kahne gear and gave me two thums up.

Silly story, I know. But for that one day I felt really special. He probably does it for his fans at every track but that was MY first race and my first 'live and in person' experience with NASCAR so it meant a lot to me.

Nitewalk6- That is great! I love opinionated discussions about NASCAR and can jab with the best of them. Very glad to hear that Kasey is on the good list :) Would be interested to know which ones are on the bad list for you as I have a bad list too and maybe we have some in common :) Would also love to know which ones are on the good list, maybe I could concur :)

Obviously, I am new to this message board thing and have realized that when you 'reply' to a comment it doesn't get matched with the comment. So I am going to reply to each comment individually (if anybody knows of a better way that I can reply to comments while keeping the comment on my screen so I can reflect on what I am going to write... PLEASE LET ME KNOW)

Sapphyre- I certainly hope so too. I adore him as well. I get the impression that he is just a genuinely great guy. I took a lot of pictures the last time I went to the track (of which he is very obviously posing for the people snapping shots). If you would like to see some I would love to share (Please let me know the easiest way how to do that!)

Yes I have been to the ChicagoLand Speedway. But only went to the race once since the tickets have to be bought as a package deal. You have to buy for all the races and it cost around 200 dollars or so to do that per person. My husband and I usually go to quailfing its great.
As for going to dirt tracks there is one near Maple Park, Il that we use to go to around here. Hawkeye Downs in Cedar Rapids was a dirt track than they made it black top several years ago. I would love to get to Rusty's new track in Newton drove past there once and it looks great. Use to go to Hawkeye Downs and watch the ASA before it folded got to meet Adam Petty and jimmie Johnson the year that Adam was killed. It was alot of fun and had a great time talking to both of them. Wouldn't trade that for the world.
like you love the dirt track racing and you are right I didn't think Brian France or Mike Helton would like the fans very well if they took either race from Bristol. I want to go to that track myself. On my list of places to go see a race along with Daytona and Dega.

Hi Tammy, do you ever get over to Chicago for the race?
I think dirt track late models in the Midwest is THE best racing in the country (grew up in NE and had perfect attendance @Sunset Speedway for 10 years).
I never got to Marion but did the three major Iowa tracks in the West and Central part.

I totally agree about the sport part of the conversation, look at the cities and areas NASCAR has expanded in recent years and cities that would like race dates. The bad news is the teams cannot afford to run year round and it will ultimately mean some tracks losing their second date (except Bristol, fans would hang Brian France).

Hello Everyone,

I'm a huge NASCAR fan and have been one since I was very little. Grew up in marion, IA and went to Hawkeye Downs since I was 2 I'm 45 now. I too have met several NASCAR drivers and firmly believe this is a sport hands down. I have met Kasey Kahne and my husband is a big fan of his I'm for Dale Jr. myself. I understand he hasn't been doing very well but I followed his father for a very long time I think since his career started and have had a blessed chance to meet most of the Earnhardt family. I'm glad Kasey is in the chase this year along with (The Kid) Mark Martin I hope he takes it this year.
I'm too not from the south and have all my teeth too. It's really bad that for the longest time people believed that all racing fans where rednecks and married to their cousins, lived in trailers and missing teeth. Now racing is the up sport and if your not a race fan your nobody so that is funny. Love the sport always have and always will along with bowling of course. We now live in Aurora, IL and when we moved here people would tell me there are no NASCAR fans here and I would laugh. This was 20 years ago my husband and I said just wait and see.
Well enough for now take care everyone and may the best driver win we hope.

Tammy F.

Hi Rebecca. I agree Nascar is a sport. One I enjoy very much. Watch the nationwide and the sprint cup races. If I cant be home then I tape them. I have never been able to go to a race. Sure that would be great. Jr is my favorite but as most know I love rooting for whoever is in the lead or second. Glad to see that Kasey is doing better this year. Wish him lots of luck. I for one would love to hear your story about Kasey.

Hi Rebecca, this is an opinionated bunch so please don't take any driver 'jabs' personally.
My in-laws live about two hours from MIS and we were thinking about coming up for Fathers day but this year the date didn't work out that way.
Living in Charlotte we get to go to several tracks and are season ticket holders at Bristol. We take the motorhome up there and spend the week (both races).
It would be easier to say what drivers we don't like. Kasey is on the good list.

I adore Kasey, been rooting for him since his Rookie season. He's doing so great this season! Maybe next year he'll be a real contender for the chamionship when they move to Ford.

Welcome to the team!

Hi, my name is Rebecca. I am 24 years old and from Michigan (all of which you could have learned from my sparkpage). My favorite driver is Kasey Kahne, which you probably could have gathered from the topic line (Carl Edwards used to be my second favorite but he really disappointed me the last time I went to see a race).

I have been to a NASCAR race twice, once in 2005 and again this past spring (both times at MIS). I have already renewed my tickets for next year so Boogity Boogity Boogity....

I am not the categorical NASCAR fan... I have all of my teeth (except for my wisdom teeth which never existed to begin with...) as I am sure all of you do and maybe even a couple of you are tired of the NASCAR fan stereotype too. I am not an argumentative person but I will engage in a battle of wits with anyone in my day-to-day life who tries to claim that NASCAR isn't a sport.

I have been fortunate enough to get Kasey's autograph (along with some other awesome driver's) and actually have a corny story to share about a tiny insignificant 'moment' with Kasey if anyone wants to hear it...

I would love to hear from as many of you that would like to respond. I generally respond back (though responses may be delayed, I only use internet at work... ironic, huh). I especially would love to hear from anyone else that may be going to MIS (Michigan International Speedway, should have said that earlier) this next year. Maybe we can meet and walk around a little bit.

God Bless!
Rebecca
