We plan to start April 27th (hope to avoid the big rush at the beginning). We are pretty avid walkers (when we were in Wisconsin we would walk between four and twelve miles a day), and have been walking our ... Mon, 2 Jan 2017 18:54:58 EST Hi everyone! Hi everybody! Sun, 22 Feb 2015 20:09:35 EST Red Flag points for the team! I got 2 Red Flag points for the team today - how many did y'all get? Sat, 14 Feb 2015 08:08:33 EST Lifelong AT Fan. Hello everyone. About 37 years ago I had the time to hike from Springer to Damascus. Over the years I have visited the Smokies again, Mt. Washington, Francona notch, and always stop at trail crossings. Life, work and weight gains got in the way so I never finished the hike. It is always on my mind and my wife says it would kill me now. I always think, wow what a way to go. So far I've dropped 61 pounds since mid january. Who knows maybe someday I will finish that hike. Thu, 13 Nov 2014 12:49:17 EST Recovery I just finished a Northbound Thru-hike of the AT and recovery has been really slow. I did 8 squats the other day and had to stop. My muscles were sore and cramping for 4 days after! Its nuts... My joints hurt after 1/2 mile of walking. I've been doing yoga daily to try to open up my hips and other tight leg muscles. Anyone else in here finish the entire trail? What have you been doing to recover? Tue, 7 Jan 2014 20:34:43 EST Hiking Again Greetings from the South or, should I say, "Hi y'all"! New to Spark and glad to find others who love hiking. I hiked a stretch of the AT years ago and used to regularly jump on the trail to decompress. I miss it. With my weight gain I can't fit in my ol' hiking boots anymore. Quite frankly, I walk so slow now that I don't know who would bear to hike with me at the pace I go. One step....huff and puff.....two step.....stop to take a break....I'm mean it is just ridiculous! Sun, 26 May 2013 20:22:49 EST Trail Days hikes Finally got out on the AT for a bit this past weekend.

Joined up with a meetup group that went to Trail Days. The reason I ask is it might allow people who want to hike smaller trails along and around the appalachains to participate in our team as well.

This will be a team decision so let me know what you think and any name ideas you might have. However, it is really cold right now in Western, NC so I will have to wait a little while before I can get back on the trails because I am not properly equipped for these temperatures.

I am also a new team leader for this group and would love ideas on how to improve this group and I hope I can be of service... I have hiked it in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Virginia and West Virginia. I am 51 years old and I love to hike. Can't wait to meet my fellow team mates. Fri, 17 Sep 2010 15:46:48 EST September Chat Things have been pretty quiet here over the summer. I'm hoping as Fall weather and routines start more folks will be stopping by to check in and chat. I thought I'd just start a new chat thread with nothing in particular just a place to come check in and say what ever's on your mind.

I haven't been able to fit in any hiking the past few weeks. Thu, 24 Jun 2010 14:08:14 EST NOBO 2012! Hi Everyone! Glad to see a team on here dedicated to the AT. I'll be thru hiking it in Mar-Apr of 2012 with my dad, and can't wait! We always did a lot of hiking growing up, and then I moved to WA state with my husband where my love for "backpacking" really took off. We wanted to hike the PCT, but college/work wouldn't allow us the time. Now we're in AL & I'll be finishing nursing school next May, & realized that I will finally have time to thru hike a trail! Right now I'm in the "information... Sun, 23 May 2010 01:27:12 EST Hello! Hello everyone! My long term goal is to celebrate my 50th birthday hiking a section of the AT . . . that means I have 2 years and 4 months to get in shape and prepare! I was happy to see this SparkTeam because I think it will help keep me motivated. Mon, 10 May 2010 23:14:27 EST Training-what are you doing Well, I am also training for a rafting trip in May so I am going to the gym or doing some thype of workout 5-6 days a week. I was planning to go out hiking, about 9 miles this past weekend but we got 8 inches of snow so I ended up not going as the drive to the trailhead was 2 hours away. I am hoping to get another hike on the AT in February.
What is everyone else doing?

terri/dirigo Mon, 1 Feb 2010 15:33:33 EST Hiking the AT for real!!!!! I know a virtual hike of the AT has been done but what about instead of tracking miles we track minutes. Each minute of cardio exercise represents a mile on the AT. Tracking as minutes vs miles walked means we can complete the AT in about 2 months.

We can report daily or weekly on our progress along the trail. I will b... Just wanted to say hey and show my support for this spark team. I thruhiked from GA to ME in 2005. What a great experience! I live in MN so I'm a long way from the AT now. The trail is hard, but the hardest step is actually deciding to try to thruhike. Every spring I get the fever and wish I was hitting the trail for another 6 months. Think I'll jump on the virtual AT challenge with y'all! My next long distance hike will hopefully be a PCT thruhike in a few years. Happy hiking!
K Sat, 31 Jan 2009 01:29:13 EST Jan Challenge Ok, folks.....I kknow it has been awhile, so I need to get into too.........
Let's get out and hike, or at least get on the treadmill.
I am going hiking this coming Saturday the 24, and I hope you can can virtually come with me. For the last two years, I have planned and tried to set up a vacation for me and my husband where we can hike the trail. Last fall, we almost made it but had to cancel when I lost my job and the funds weren't available. We are still trying to get there and hopefully I can look to you for advice. We joined the Appalachian Trail Conservancy too. The trail is too important and needs to be available to future generations. Sat, 3 Jan 2009 18:01:37 EST Winter Outtings Went out hiking today with my parents and bf. We only hiked about 4 miles since the temperature was starting to fall below freezing, but it was great to get out all together around the holidays. We're thinking of getting the snowshoes out since the snow doesn't seem to be going away. Fri, 26 Dec 2008 16:24:34 EST Hey everyone! Alison here! My boyfriend & I are talking seriously about hiking the entire AT early 2010. He's more of a recreational hiker than I am, but my 9-5 job is basically off-trail hiking with a lot of weight in my pack so I think I'm up for it. We'll be spending the next year shedding our extra pounds & hiking of course. Sat, 20 Dec 2008 15:58:26 EST Trail Dames HI All, Shoe you had mentioned about the Georgia Trail Dames, and I looked all around their site. The road we normally take to get to the trailhead was closed so we had to walk along the road for quite some time to get to the trail head, but since there were no cars it wasn't unplesant.
