SparkPeople SP Class of July 8-14, 2007 Team Messageboard This team is for new members who joined SparkPeople from July 8-14, 2007. Welcome! SparkPeople SP Class of July 8-14, 2007 Team Messageboard How to get through the holidays any ideas how to make the season of over indulgence easier? Wed, 24 Oct 2012 21:28:11 EST Enjoying my start with SparkPeople. . . I'm a runner that's never "run" off her weight (4 marathons, many 1/2 marathons and lots of 10kms). This is a 2nd or 3rd attempt at SparkPeople but I'm finally staying on track. It's been a few weeks and I've lost about 4 pounds so I'm happy. I can never manage to stay on a "diet" but am enjoying eating what I want while keeping track. Best wishes to everyone out there in the same boat:) Thu, 23 Jun 2011 00:13:16 EST May 2010 - What are you up to this month? Just seeing who from our log in date is around and what goals they are setting for themselves. I'm going to get a Go Wear Fit and try to wear it faithfully this month along with logging in all my bites! What is working for you? Sun, 2 May 2010 20:32:16 EST Hello Fellow SparkPeople Members I heard about the SparkPeople community a while ago and I have made the decision to join you all in an effort to help get and give support to achieve my weigh loss goal. Tue, 19 Jan 2010 09:32:45 EST Not New. Just Haven't Been On. I have known for awhile that I need to lose weight and be a healthy size. One reason that I have always had problems doing this is do to my poor eating habits. When Im bored I eat, when I'm upset I set, when I'm hungry I eat...I am constantly eating. If I could change this I would probably shed 50 lbs alone. I really need some support. My husband is there for me if I want to lose weight but does not want to lose weight hisself. So he isn't much support. Pleasee support me! :) Sun, 25 Oct 2009 16:39:39 EST Finally enlightened Hi -- I am 50+, single parent, living in Washington state. I first learned of Sparkpeople two years ago!!!! I used it successfully, loved it but strayed. Now, two years later I find myself about 10 lbs heavier. Now, two years later I am committed to simply following the Sparkpeople program, not straying or trying to "color outside the lines", just touching base everyday and really looking at my personal challenges to weight loss and overcoming them. Seems like a great community and I'm al... Wed, 12 Aug 2009 13:04:26 EST TH is trying to live healthy & green I am happy to be part of a network with my same goals in mind. My pedometer keeps falling off my waistband.... so its not a lot of good and I even lost one that way.... plus what about counting just moving not steps? Any helpful info would be appreciated as I want to walk a lot more especially now that the summer is coming. i would love to get a good pedometer but dont want to spend money to keep having to ... Mon, 26 May 2008 17:16:34 EST Low Fat Menu Items Aren't Always! A member of one of my other teams posted about an investigation into "low fat" menu items from some popular restaurant chains that was done by her local news. The results were shocking!

Here's the link:

ory.aspx?content_id=8547c029-ea1a-43b3
-a685-2f89b01edc04
Wed, 21 May 2008 09:41:49 EST One Year SparkPeople Anniversary approaching... So, Team, we have an anniversary coming up in a couple of months! 12
How shall we celebrate our first year on SparkPeople?

I used to think 'chocolate' or 'lots of good food' when I wanted to celebrate an event. Now I'm thinking... Tue, 22 Apr 2008 13:49:24 EST Daily calorie limit Does anyone else have a problem staying within their daily calorie limit? I am supposed to eat max. 1520 per day but that seems very low to me! I calculated my basal metabolic rate and it says I need to eat at least 2700 to maintain my current weight, and if I want to lose, cut off 500 calories. That puts my maximum calorie intake to 2200/day. I honestly don't think I can stay eating only 1520/day...I'm starving! Thoughts??? Wed, 5 Mar 2008 13:51:11 EST TWELVE Weeks Until Summer! I heard on the Today Show this morning that there are exactly 12 weeks until the official first day of summer.

What are YOU going to do to get ready for bathing suit season?

298 Wed, 5 Mar 2008 11:33:06 EST Valentine's Day! So, how did everyone's Valentine's day go? Did all of your sweethearts keep the chocolate away? My hubby surprised me with some beautiful roses. Thank God he didn't have enough money for sweets too. Here's a chance to brag on your significant other and tell us what he/she did. Thu, 14 Feb 2008 19:45:09 EST Returning Members Yep, that's me... a returning member. I let my pitter patter fade out and now months later, I am back with full intentions of being an active member.

So, guess I just want to say hello... . 213

PS: I made this a generic "returning members" topic thinking there may be some other people who joined when we did and left for awhile and have also found their way back. Fri, 4 Jan 2008 06:00:43 EST FYI: Gaiam Walking Weightloss Package I was in Borders last night and they had an "exclusive to Borders" Gaiam weight loss walking DVD, audio CD and pedometer for $10. Since it's Gaiam, I suspect the audio stuff is rather... um, etheral... as well as affirming.

So if someone's looking for something they can use to guide them indoors & out - you may want to check that out. Hey all

As the old song goes: time to pick myself up, dust myself off and start all over again.

After 2 months of doing nothing but put out fires around here, it's time to refocus on me. The past week I've been easing back into the idea of asking myself "do I really want to eat this or am I just not dealing with ...," bought myself a spiffy new journal and I'm preparing a spot in my bedroom to spend a little time daily for reading/meditating.

I'm also going t... I don't know about everyone else but the holidays are really a tough time for me. With all the wonderful holiday foods. I need something to keep me on track so I don't start gaining again. So I was thinking that it might be fun to start an exercise streak and see how long we can continue it. I am starting today. Anything counts. We will report our progress here. Do I have any takers?

Rene 68 Mon, 26 Nov 2007 11:44:18 EST new to this team Hi Everyone. I joined SP in July but didn't join this team then. Fri, 16 Nov 2007 11:18:03 EST Getting back on track! Ok, for those of you who haven't kept up with my soap opera of a life, here's the update. Quit the Y, got robbed, truck died, temp job over with, got mugged and gained 6 lbs. Not the kind of month I would like to brag about but I'm finally getting my mind set to stop eating and start working off the lbs. again. Sorry I haven't kept up with the group but I'm trying to get going again. Gonna need all the support I can get so I can stop the binge eating! Thu, 15 Nov 2007 22:18:49 EST Drop 2 - 5 pounds by Thanksgiving! Thanksgiving is 9 days away. With determination and will power I have challenged myself to lose 4 pounds by Thanksgiving. I would rather honestly lose 5 lbs and see 169 on the scale but to be more realistic I am shooting for 4 lbs! Tue, 13 Nov 2007 11:58:02 EST No Transfats and 25 or under Saturated fats So we will try to have 0 transfats and keep Saturated fats under 25 a day. How does that sound?

Shall we do this one for one week?
Rene Mon, 12 Nov 2007 14:48:37 EST November Challenge I think we should have a challenge for the whole month of November and everyday we should tell everyone what we are thankful for. By the end of the month we should really be able to see our blessings!

Any takers??
Rene Wed, 31 Oct 2007 13:35:42 EST What I did right today We can use this thread to focus on the positive things we are doing.

We can share what we are doing right!!

Rene Fri, 26 Oct 2007 14:52:27 EST Fiber and Sodium Challenge 10/28- 11/3 Ok for this week we will try to keep our fiber high and our sodium low. Well it's been a little over 3 months now, and I was wondering how everyone's motivation was. I know that many have lost several lbs. and that's been good, but have you hit a mental plateau as far as motivation goes? I have certainly hit the wall. Last week was so stressful that I didn't get my exercise in and ate the most horrible stuff for me. (I guess my stomach has shrunk) and Friday when I pigged out on pizza, I felt so bad that I laid down when I went home that night and repented fo... Fri, 12 Oct 2007 09:16:43 EST Did Anyone Miss Me? Well, if anyone noticed, I've been out of commission for about a week and a half. Stupid computer virus got through and wiped out everything but guess what....I'M BACK!!!! Can't say I've been doing very well with my exercise and eating since I've been cut off from my sparkpeople for so long. I'm scared to step on the scale because I know I flubbed up out of pure frustration! I missed all of you; it's hard to believe how dependent you come on your computer. Sat, 6 Oct 2007 08:46:49 EST Challenge for week of Sept 30- Oct. 6th I think our first challenge should be simple.

For this week we should try to drink at least 8 glasses of water.

And an extra challenge give up soda for the week.

We should report on our progress, so that we can see how everyone is doing. Fri, 28 Sep 2007 14:27:00 EST underwater farting monkey hula hoop challenge OK folks, I've been thinking about this and let's see how this sounds:

For the month of October, anyone taking the challenge has to:

- drink at least 8 glasses of WATER (not diet soda, coffee, tea, whatever) daily

- eat the recommended amount of FIBER daily (adjust your nutrition tracker to count fiber as well as calories, fat, protein and carbs)

- set a PHYSICAL ACTIVITY goal - such a run a 5k race or do 3 days of cardio or whatever

What... Thu, 27 Sep 2007 08:32:20 EST Thank God the Birthdays are over! Well, all the birthdays are over for the week and I have a house full of unhealthy leftovers my in-laws left for me to devour. My mother-in-law makes the best potato salad in the world! My "friend" came to visit this week so I didn't jump on the scale this week to see what the damage is yet. Thu, 20 Sep 2007 08:02:39 EST New Co leaders I suppose you may have noticed that we have some new team leaders. I requested some help and these ladies graciously offered their time and services.

Please join me in congratualting Sierra3521 and WONDER_WOMAN777 as they join me in leading this team.

I would also like to thank everyone who volunteered. This is a truly awesome team!

Rene Tue, 18 Sep 2007 13:34:57 EST This is for all us computer savvy people ..... I hope this doesnt offend anyone but I just thought it was sooo cute and we all deserve a chuckle!

Jesus and Satan were having an on-going argument about who was better on the computer. They had been going at it for days, and frankly God was tired of hearing all the bickering.

Finally fed up, God said, "THAT'S IT! I have had enough. I am going to set up a test that will run for two hours, and from those results, I will judge who does the better job."

So Satan ... Sun, 16 Sep 2007 22:21:17 EST OK, I need some reassurance I need some reassurance about something. I belong to this other team (yes, I'm two timing you all) and this lady posts a message about what is best, overeating alittle everyday or having one day to overeat. Well, my common sense tells me that we should try to stick within our ranges every day and even though we have a setback (which I am becoming famous for on the weekends)we shouldn't schedule a setback before it happens. Is this just me or do I need an updated way of thinking? People ar... Sat, 15 Sep 2007 12:45:16 EST I'm back Hey there. I joined Spark People and sort of put it on the back burner since I moved to a new house and spent the month of August settling in.

Right now I'm ready to refocus with the fall as I'm rebuilding routines into my life again.

Right now I do have a slight problem. I've been wanting a Total Gym which is the excersize machine that Chuck Norris does the infomercials on. Well anyways, they have the low grade version at walmart for $185 so I was thinking of getting that one. I'm not a person who is usually willing to spend the extra money on getting the model of an item with all the bells and whistles.... heck you should see my car! They have talked mainly about kids and lack of physical activity. Really they have said nothing new about the topic. One interesting thing that all of the speakers have brought up is they need to bring P.E. back into our schools. Well, here goes my whining again. I had this perfect dinner planned tonight. I set out chicken breasts for my DH to grill, made a salad and was going to steam some veggies. Sounds healthy huh?! Well, hubby comes home early because he got hurt on the job, I don't know how to work his grill so instead of just broiling the chicken, I pulled the standby hotdogs and mac and cheese out. Not very ideal I know. After everyone was done eating, there was one pesky hotdog left and instead of wrap... Thu, 13 Sep 2007 21:44:31 EST My Chance to Shine!!! Mon, 10 Sep 2007 15:09:09 EST Fat Flush Tea I saw a message about the fat flush tea on this website the other day and now I can't find it. There were blogs posted with opinions. OK team, this is a little sad and embarrassing! I have the top four posts on this team. Isn't there anyone out there who has the gift of gab besides me? I want to hear some success stories, or venting or ANYTHING! I WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU!!!! Wed, 5 Sep 2007 21:36:59 EST How was Everyone's Labor Day? Well, I'm proud to say that I didn't flub up this weekend. Yeah, I wobbled there on Saturday but I pulled through and didn't go over any of my limits! How did everyone else do being that it was a holiday and cookouts are inevitable? Mon, 3 Sep 2007 14:14:05 EST I DID A NO NO! Ugh! I have had such a horrible day. I've been fighting with state workers all day. The worst part of it is that those stupid people made me so mad that I went home and gave a new meaning to "emotional eating" BAD BAD BAD Is there any justice in this world? Fri, 31 Aug 2007 22:40:56 EST CAN I GET A WOO HOO???!!!! Well, after a week of houseguests and four days with no computer which means no SP, I decided to get on that scale today. I can't believe it, I lost 2.5 lbs.!!!! I went down!!! Oh, if you all could see me, I am so happy that I am dancing around the house. Anyone else feel like celebrating with me?
Wed, 29 Aug 2007 22:00:02 EST OK! I'm really back this time! Thanks for the few little notes from those who were concerned if I was still alive or not. My computer got fried over the weekend due to lightning. Everything is fixed and I am up and running again. Tue, 28 Aug 2007 22:19:21 EST Wheat Berries Anyone??? Is anyone out there eating wheat berries? I had a wheat berry salad a few weeks ago and then bought some wheat berries at Whole Foods. Just got around to soaking and cooking them. I had to lay off experimenting with new things after my mung bean episode, but that's another story. Anyway, I tossed some wheat berries in my fruit and cereal today and I've never felt more full. Apparently, these wondrous little nuggets of grain take up a lot of room in your stomach! If anyone has any great ... Sun, 26 Aug 2007 14:58:29 EST Going on vacation next week.. How to stay active?? I'm going to Texas next week to visit my daughter who is being deployed soon (ughh!). I'm seriously worried about backsliding. Not only with my diet because to a small degree that is going to be a given, and I can come home and get back on track (I will try to make the best choices I can when eating out though). My fear is not finding the time to exercise. My main form of activity right now is hiking which I won't be able to do while gone. I will be doing a lot of walking, but none of the h... Sat, 25 Aug 2007 10:25:59 EST DID ANYONE MISS ME? Well, I'm back as of tonight! If anyone cares....I had a good time with my parents but boy am I glad to say goodbye. 5 days with no SP, 3 days with no workout, and lord knows how much water I missed and how many calories I overate because I couldn't log anything in. I'm afraid to jump on the scale so I'm going to wait until Monday to take a peek. Wish me luck. Wed, 22 Aug 2007 22:46:53 EST Back on the Wagon Again After a week of drowning in self-pity, I've learned how to swim. Not literally, I just mean that I have overcome a week-long, yes, WEEK-long binge.

The fresh air smells wonderful! Wed, 22 Aug 2007 11:29:21 EST Picky Eaters I'm doing fine on my healthy eating. In fact, if it were just my husband (diabetic) and I, meals would be a snap. The challenge is fixing meals that three picky kids will eat too. I don't know when it happened because as wee ones, they ate great. Then it just seems one day, boom, all they want is "good food" (translated: processed, high fat, high salt, high sugar) and turn their noses up at homecooked meals. (I was thinking of installing a window in the kitchen because if it comes throug... Tue, 21 Aug 2007 13:04:59 EST My public service announcement about kids' safety! I know this is completely off topic, but it's on my mind and I know many of you have active youngsters at home...on my way home a few minutes ago, I passed the scene of a skateboarding accident. We have a steep hill that kids love to go flying down. 99% of the kids are NOT wearing safety equipment and there are often near disasters. Today, the young man who fell was face down and completely motionless on the sidewalk. Within minutes, LifeFlight was on site to medivac him to the trauma cen... Fri, 17 Aug 2007 17:09:14 EST FUN WITH THE KIDS Yesterday I had the kids to put on there tennis shoes so we could go out to play basketball. I have four teenagers 2 boys 18 and 16; 2 girls 14 and 13. At first my older daughter complained and stood around not wanting to get involved. (she is the only one who doesn't like sports in our family). I had my older son start some drills with the girls and that's when she started to have fun.

My younger son is competitive and likes to be a show off so he evenually got out the jump rop... Wed, 15 Aug 2007 17:09:44 EST The Parents are Coming! Well, tomorrow is the big day. If you checked out my spark page, you know one of the important things to me is that my parents will see a change in me. I've been running around here cleaning like crazy and hoping they will notice. I've lost 11 lbs. since they last saw me. Keep your fingers crossed. Isn't funny no matter how old you are, you're always looking for your parent's approval. Wed, 15 Aug 2007 12:39:46 EST Had A Lousy Weekend!!! Well, I had a setback. I overindulged this weekend and didn't make it to the gym at all. I know don't beat myself up but boy does it make you feel lousy. I've lost my spark and need a boost. I'm watching my calories today and plan to go to the gym tonight but don't feel the excitement I had before. Anyone else out there ever have this happen to you? Mon, 13 Aug 2007 12:59:12 EST A Big Hello to all from Texas....and Bess Hi,everyone. I am like most, still have a few pounds that I am wanting to lose. It is so hard this time around, older. more stress and the list goes on. But they are like all...only excuses..I just need to try harder.
I am 72 years old, care giver for my hubby that has Parkinsons. This takes a lot of my time. He has been my wonderful hubby for almost 57 years.
If I can help anyone in any way, please ask me. The best to all 247 Sun, 12 Aug 2007 20:29:00 EST What have you noticed besides losing weight?...... Besides losing weight what positive changes have you seen??

I am able to climb stairs without being winded, my clothes feel and look better on me, I am stonger and more flexible, I have a more positive attitude. Thes are just a few of the things I have noticed.

How about you what do you see changing? Thu, 9 Aug 2007 14:01:04 EST 1 month down, how much weight have you lost? So 1 month has passed since we joined SP. How much weight have you all lost. This is the best weight loss programme i've been on. I find counting calories easier than weight watchers, especially with the nutritional and fitness trackers. I've had a few slip ups in the past month but still managed to lose 12lbs!!! Only 38 more to go!!! Thu, 9 Aug 2007 06:22:08 EST Forgiving Ourselves So a friend sent me an email with one of those touching sentiments about friendship. The gist of the message was about how we should write our 'hurts' in the sand and should carve our blessings in stone. I immediately thought about how that applies here in the land of Spark.

At some point in this journey of ours, many of us have managed to let what we perceive as our failures, drag us down. It might be for an hour, a day, and for some of us...longer. We've accidently carved t... Wed, 8 Aug 2007 13:45:57 EST How to Stop Eating Cookies I saw this on one of my SparkFriend's blogs and laughed so hard I thought you guys might enjoy it:

From my sister today: "When I buy cookies I eat just four and throw the rest away. But first I spray them with Raid so I won't dig them out of the garbage later. Be careful, though, because that Raid really doesn't taste that bad."

Of course she was joking...right?

20 Wed, 8 Aug 2007 13:02:12 EST TV and food ads 230

Another reason not to watch much TV - the advertising works folks! There has been a new study that shows that kids prefer foods in McDonald's wrappers due to the success of advertising. they actually think the same food tastes better than in an unbranded wrapper.

And I don't think children are alone here. How many times have you watched a restaurant commercial and salivated, even though you KNOW the food doesn't taste that good there? And how often do you ... Tue, 7 Aug 2007 07:52:55 EST Measuring One's suck in or not? Okay, so I'm curious about how all of you measure your waist. I recall seeing something on Oprah about some guy named Dr. Oz (the name sounds too funny to be true). Anyway, he said that to record accurate loss in your waistline, that you should measure with your tummy sucked in. It's not so much what your actual, unsucked in tummy measures as it is what you're losing. And, according to him, the best way to do that is if you measure with it sucked in every time, you'll get a more accurate ... Mon, 6 Aug 2007 16:31:32 EST HOORAY! MY SCALE DIDN'T MOVE!!! Well guys/girls, today was my official weigh in day. I was not excited about it because last week was "the visit" and I figured my scale would go up again. I still worked out and did my strength and boy was I happy that I stayed the same! Just think, my first week here on SP and I was disappointed about losing only one pound now I'm dancing because I didn't move at all. How'd you all do? Mon, 6 Aug 2007 13:29:56 EST So what SP Boards are you reading? Hi there,

I haven't been on the boards much, but would like to explore them a bit more. My problem is that I find all the choice of boards and Spark Teams overwhelming! I'm trying to find a couple that I might enjoy settling into for a bit - ones that are active, but not so active that there are 200 postings from the past day.

So, I thought I'd turn to you guys and see where some of you who started SP around the same time as me have landed.

As a bit of backg... Mon, 6 Aug 2007 12:58:39 EST A FUNNY THING HAPPENED.... Today was my first time on one of those fancy treadmills. I asked one of the instructors to show me how to program and use all the buttons. She explained everything to me and set my speed at 1.5 mph. She said as I felt comfortable I could increase the speed and the incline. Well, after a few minutes, I went up and up and up. I ended up at 3.7 mph and felt pretty good at that. I finished my 1/2 slowed my pace back down and when the machine finished and I walked off, I felt like I had jus... So I didn't lose much weight this week. Actually, I did, but the scale jumped up just for my weigh in. I've decided not to cheat and use yesterday's numbers, as I know it's normal for weight to fluctuate a couple of pounds each day anyway.

Well, this will teach me not to eat Chinese food the day before weigh in. Salt has been one of the nutrients I'm having the hardest time with, and I don't even add it to my food!

I'm really looking forward to seeing the scale drop se... Mon, 30 Jul 2007 07:33:12 EST Hey Everyone I here trying to lose that last 15 pounds for the 4 time. It is very frustrating to hit your goal and then get lazy! I think with my family of 5 kids and hubby on board of making healthier choices, I will maintain this time. I've lost 81 pounds in total, but would like to finish off the last bit.

Just wanted to say "HI" to everyone. Thu, 26 Jul 2007 21:32:32 EST Two weeks in, 9 lbs down! I am SO excited to report that since I started my lifestyle change on July 9, 2007, I've lost 9 pounds! WOO-HOO!!! (booty-dance!)

It feels great, and I can see a huge difference in the way I look already, and so can my hubby!

This really gives me the motivation I need to keep going, to keep hopping on the treadmill every night so that next week when I weigh in I'll be able to report more good news. I'm well on my way towards my goal of 100 lbs lost by August 2008! YAY!... Thu, 26 Jul 2007 11:32:58 EST NEED SOME CHEERING UP!!! I got into this horrendous fight some overgrown jerk who thought he could bully me. I stood my ground but I'm so full of emotions right now I could bust. 6' man picking on a 5'1" woman and he has the nerve to call me white trash!!! I'm above his standards and didn't retaliate with anything racial back but my feelings sure did get hurt. I need to hear some good things that happened today to make me smile. Wed, 25 Jul 2007 22:17:43 EST Pop and heart disease? I heard this morning that there is some research the suggests there is a link between drinking even one can of (regular OR) diet soda pop a day and developing heart disease. 198

So far I haven't decided whether it will make me stop or just cut back.

Since they don't have any idea what the connection is, I'm not too worried. However, it brought to mind the fact that I used to drink almost no pop at all. I would have one every once in a while, and never bought m... Tue, 24 Jul 2007 20:47:28 EST Technical help I am not getting SparkMail (from SP, I can get mail from other members). I wonder if there is something wrong with the system. Mon, 23 Jul 2007 10:04:21 EST Looking for weight loss buddies I am looking for some weight loss buddies with similar situations to me (I have about 100-120 pounds to lose, and am a stay-at-home parent). I have the flexibility to check SP often and am hoping that I can find some buddies who are motivated to lose a similar amount of weight and can "check-in" at least 2-3x per week. I am a pretty optimistic person and I think I will also be a great buddy to you.

Cheers! Sun, 22 Jul 2007 21:29:18 EST Exercise support I have been walking to the shop etc but have now got the glide walker /gazelle we bought it 5 yrs ago and it has lived in the shed for 2 of those and before that it was quite handy to hang clothes on.

I used the walker/gazelle for 5 mins hard walking this evening and now it is out and in the back bedroom I will build up my time on it each day

Just need encouragement to keep up the exercise as I do find it a chore Sat, 21 Jul 2007 13:19:34 EST Moving on to stage 2 Hi today I am moving on to stage 2.
