I enjoy hiking, camping and canoeing. I can't wait for the snow to go this year to get back out into the bush. I do have snowshoes, however, my hiking partner recently had surgery and is not able to go. My favourite pastime is spending time at our cabin on 38 acres. I have joined Sparks a few time without much commitment. I am working on changing my mindset. Instead of the focus being on my weight, I want to improve my health to allow myself to enjoy ... Fri, 12 Mar 2021 12:06:55 EST Hello from Bend, Oregon Hello, I currently live in Bend Oregon and have the Pacific Northwest as my hiking playground. Although it will be interesting to see how that works this summer as our forest service has instituted a permit system for the most popular trails which limits the number of people on these particular trails each day. Good for the maintenance of the trail, bad for those who like to "play it by ear" when choosing a place to hike.

I am a fairly confident hiker, have taken Outdoor Leadershi... Mon, 9 Feb 2015 14:32:56 EST Big Hello from Beautiful British Columbia, Canada On the far West Coast, we are enjoying a very mild winter, perfect for driving to trail-heads and relishing in the abundant green vegetation. Just the other day, I saw some tree buds opening, ... and it was still January then. I have the best hiking boots ever, but the soles slip on ice, so you can imagine how pleased I was to be able to wear them this time of year. No ice! Hoping the share a new year of lots of hiking with you. Happy trails in 2015!!! Sun, 1 Feb 2015 14:13:43 EST Personal Locator Beacon - Question? My husband and I are planning our first hike of the year. It's been several years since we hiked (our son was with us then). Does anyone own a personal locator beacon (PLB) and if so, what brand did you buy? We are looking at the PLB's with built-in GPS. They aren't cheap so I'm interested in one that is very dependable and of great quality.

Fri, 30 Jan 2015 12:54:17 EST Greetings from Northern Minnesota! Looking to add friends as well so add me if you like. Fri, 16 Jan 2015 15:50:07 EST Hello from the Oregon coast! Hi everyone!

Glad I found this team! Hubby and I have lived on the Oregon coast 2 1/2 years now. We bought a house in August of 2013 and have spent the better part of a year with home improvement projects. Unfortunately our love for hiking took a back seat.

We live in this beautiful state, not taking full advantage of it, so we decided to put outdoor activity at the top of our list. After researching online, I ran off a list of 3 dozen or so hiking trails near us. W... Tue, 13 Jan 2015 13:32:25 EST Hi From Michigan Glad I found you all!! And that is the one thing I am thankful for today (The thankful challenge) Speaking of challenges, I joined that challenge but cannot figure out how to be accountable for it. In all my days of hiking and bushwhacking, I've never been as lost as I am trying to find my way around SparkPeople! Anyway, I loved activities that got me outside especially hiking and backpacking. Unfortunately a major life change and I've basically been a couch potato for 4 years. I can't ... I have thought a lot lately about packing in my own gear and staying on top of the world to fire lookouts. SEE:

Sat, 22 Nov 2014 15:36:52 EST Hello! I am new but here to stay! Hello, I joined a few weeks ago, but have been holding myself back from interacting with anyone else on the site because I wanted to make sure that I was really ready to commit to this journey this time. Well, today is day 5 on track with my eating and day 3 of early morning workouts. I think I am finally ready to commit to a healthy lifestyle and stick to it!! I ultimately need to loose about 100 pounds. I also want to take up running and complete an Appalachian Trail thru-hike before I turn... I'm Rachel, 22 year old fitness coach and wildlife enthusiast.

Currently living in Virginia, I've run these woods my whole life. I love wandering around in the middle of no where, exploring and seeing what I can find. I recently hiked White Oak Canyon for the first time, Two Face (my fuzzy dog child) loved it.. He goes everywhere with me, especially if there are woods or natural water involved. I was supposed to go hike Old Rag this past weekend, but it was canceled... Mon, 25 Aug 2014 14:16:21 EST Hiking alone? I'm new to the forum and a fledgling hiker. This spring (at 260+ lbs) I started hiking the trails around Phoenix (but it quickly became too hot for me to continue). The thing is, I REALLY like hiking alone. I know one's "not supposed to" go out alone, but how do you all feel about it?
I should mention that I'm hiking trails that are close to park roads, modestly populated and have decent cell signal so the risk of not being able to get help is very, very low. My bigger fear although ... Sat, 23 Aug 2014 12:18:24 EST Sleeping Bag Recommendations I'm in the market for an overnight hike sleeping bag (preferably under 4 pounds). I'm just starting into overnight hiking, so my inclination is to go cheap and then trade up when I prove to myself that I'll actually go and therefore the investment is wort it. However, my fiancee is trying to convince me otherwise. What bags to do you use or recommend? I'm aiming for less than $200.

These are the ones I'm currently debating on:
- BIG AGNES Women's Slavonia 30° Sleeping Bag, Reg... Fri, 22 Aug 2014 14:40:32 EST Hello from Phoenix! I discovered hiking this spring, right before our Phoenix temps hit permanent triple digits. I CAN'T WAIT for the thermometer to get back down to something reasonable (for me) to get back on the trails.
My bucket list includes a hike down to Havasupai Falls and back out (looking at a two or more day trip so that we can spend the night(s) at the "hotel" at the bottom and recover a bit). I am hoping to be ready by next fall (2015) if we can get reservations.
I'd love to chat with ot... Wed, 20 Aug 2014 11:15:42 EST Hello from California Hello happy hikers!
I am new to this group, but I've been on SparkPeople for six and a half years. I started hiking about a year ago. I just hiked Mt. Whitney! I don't normally post about negative things in my life, but I want to share how far I've come. I have fibromyalgia. Over three and a half years ago, I was back up over 200 pounds, again. In fact I weighed over 215 pounds. My weight has yo-yoed up and down between ages 19 and 41, gaining more and more each time. The weight gain wou... Mon, 4 Aug 2014 12:17:49 EST Greetings from Alaska Hello All!

I've been on SP for about a month now and enjoying it very much. I love to do outdoor activities and primarily hike and bike. You can browse through my blog to see some of the hikes i"ve done here in Alaska. We have a limited hiking season so I hit it pretty hard while the weather allows and then switch to snowshoes in the winter. Thinking about trying cross-country skiing this winter. Sun, 3 Aug 2014 16:34:49 EST Any hiking runners??? Looking to see if any of you hikers are also runners? I am training for a couple of long races, including my first marathon and I am wondering and looking for any tips on how hiking can fit in. I sometimes have to choose between my hiking friends and my LSD and I wonder if I have to. We do some pretty good mileage when we hike.
Next week they are doing a hike that I really want to do but I have my last and longest LSD on Saturday of 15.5 miles before my 18.12 Challenge. I know the run m... Sun, 3 Aug 2014 10:01:35 EST Promoting the Outdoors While sitting around with my hiking buddies, discussing our upcoming backpack trip, we were sharing comments about the decrease of hikers we've seen in the wilderness areas the last couple of years. I pointed out that it's getting to be the same on the shorter hikes in and around our area. We assume that part of the blame could be the "hand held" technology that the youth today so need to have (so they think). I pointed out that parents could be part of the problem, because of the complacency... Fri, 1 Aug 2014 05:36:54 EST Newbie from NH Hello! Greetings from New Hampshire! I am new to Spark people, and very excited to find a group devoted to hiking. Look forward to meeting and chatting :) Mon, 28 Jul 2014 20:30:42 EST Calorie count question Hey spark hikers .. have a question about calories burned/calories intake. When I hike, I wear my spark tracker and usually I just go by that calorie burn to calculate what to eat during that day. BUT ... out of curiosity I checked the activity tracker and if I calculate my calorie burn by the guide there, the calorie difference is a little over 1,000 calories. I don't want to eat too little, but I sure don't want to eat too many calories. I guess my question is, how do you all calculate your... Thu, 5 Jun 2014 21:33:11 EST Hello From Vermont! Hello Team! I'm from central Vermont, which is now just getting green after a long winter. I really enjoy hiking and being out in nature. It has taken me some time to reconnect to that part of my life (I used to hike a lot as a teenager). I'm way overweight at this point, but I'm focusing on building up my strength and endurance this summer so I can meet my goal that I've been talking about for three years: Hiking Camel's Hump. It is a 7.4 mile loop (the way I want to do it) and I want ... Sun, 25 May 2014 10:25:30 EST *waving* Hi from the desert boonies.. Fri, 9 May 2014 08:44:56 EST Hi From Saskatchewan, Canada Hello everyone!
I love being outdoors and close to nature and the best way to do that is hiking! I live along a river valley and enjoy an extensive trail system along it. I have been fortunate enough to see beaver, muskrat, coyotes, deer, pelicans, the rare heron, bald eagles, owls and plenty of rabbits. Our winters are long and very cold, but I will still get out if the windchill isn't too dangerous. When I take a vacation, I center it around where I can take hiking tours. I a... Fri, 2 May 2014 08:04:30 EST Bear Bells..?? My family has recently taken up hiking, and we are loving it. Fri, 31 Jan 2014 10:29:02 EST Weight loss and hiking..... hummmm Okay so I have to ask a question! I started hiking alittle over a month ago and I've noticed that I stopped losing weight. Yes, I've lost inches and still seeing a difference. But I haven't changed my eating patterns too much and I'm wondering if maybe hiking twice a week has made me hit a plateau :/ I still have about 20 pounds to lose and don't know what to do to jump-start it again.

Thanks in advance and just wondering what some of you all have run into! :) Wed, 15 Jan 2014 08:35:35 EST New to the team but NOT to Spark! :) Hello Y'all! Sun, 5 Jan 2014 13:01:08 EST Hiking Newbie Hello everyone! I am a married mother of three who is committed to a more active lifestyle, and one way I want to accomplish that is through hiking. I already love camping and the outdoors, and since I live in Herkimer County, NY (just south of the Adirondacks), hiking seems to be a perfect fit. Hopefully this winter will be short and sweet because I am eager to get out and explore! :) Sat, 4 Jan 2014 07:48:40 EST Hello Happy New Year! Hiking is one of my favorite activities and I wish I got to do more of it! My husband and I started the year out right with a short nearby hike yesterday morning. I love to head to the mountains to backpack and camp. I think hiking allows you to see places that aren't seen by many and enjoy the greatest views there are. It's awesome to think you may have stood in a spot that no one else has! Looking forward to new adventures this year! So I'm an interesting adaptive/hybrid type of Hiker. While I prefer hiking mountains and conquering new elevations, I don't necessarily have the time to do that that I used to. I've kind of adapted my activities, then, to mud and obstacle races, which involve a good bit of hiking, and also running and upper body. I still yearn for the trails, though. I had the goal of hiking Mt. Whitney next summer and was on my way but my schedule shifted. It's still a goal, just maybe not this up... I love to get outdoors and hike whenever I can and the Pacific NW offers ample opportunity for plenty of incredible hikes. However, my work travel and not so great eating habits have added 60 pounds and that doesn't help matters any when I want to do a long hike. I've discovered geocaching along with my hiking to try and conquer the weight gain but the sedentary job while traveling and po... Tue, 3 Sep 2013 17:41:02 EST Greetings! Hi! The reason I put it like that, is I will be hopefully leaving for the Navy later this year.

I'm hoping to get into an active group of hikers, but that aren't TOO extreme because I'm still in the beginner-average fitness levels. I'm working hard to get in shape for bootcamp, and I am hoping to get that partially through outdoors events. Mon, 1 Jul 2013 16:10:41 EST Getting back into hiking shape in 6 weeks? Does anyone know of any plans/ schedules for getting back into shape for hiking? I was an avid hiker and fell away from it for about a year. I started easing back into it this spring but snapped a tendon and was laid up for a while. I'm healed now and have a friend coming in from out of state to go hiking in mid August. So I estimate I have 6 weeks to get into the best shape possible.
I live on a remote island where the terrain goes from sea level to mountain peaks in a hurry. So almost... I wish it would quit raining around here so I could enjoy it more. Tue, 28 May 2013 13:53:42 EST Trekking Poles I have recently started hiking with my family and I have horrible balance. Wed, 6 Mar 2013 19:39:54 EST What do you consider a 'respectable' distance? If you've seen my blog from last week, you'll know that my hiking buddy and I did 14 hilly miles on rough paths. I find it hard to gauge how this compares with what other people do. We went quite slowly last week - average 2mph - because bits of the path were very muddy or uneven. Tomorrow I'm off hiking again, on my own as my hiking buddy isn't well. On a 10 mile hike, would you expect to go 3mph? Less? We're talking about going next week and I'm looking for some suggestions on camping & hiking in this area.
Thanks in advance in case I'm not able to reply back! 30 295 Sat, 16 Jul 2011 16:52:57 EST Forefoot pain when hiking I have developed forefoot pain in my left foot which bothers me most on descents when hiking in the local mountains. It is really bothersome and non-steroidal anti-inflammatories don't seem to make any difference in the pain or recovery. Has anybody dealt with a similar issue and if so, what did you do about it?

Thanks,
John Sat, 16 Jul 2011 12:46:29 EST Hi from Ohio! Hi! I'm new to the team, but looking forward to getting to know you (and hearing about your hiking and fitness adventures)! My husband and I traveled to Yosemite in April for a week and we try to get out around Columbus, Ohio and hike our metro parks whenever weather permits. I have three girls (ages 9, and 7 year old twins) and we love taking them out with us.

Amy

Tue, 12 Jul 2011 23:21:43 EST Hi from Oregon I've been a Spark person for a couple of years, but haven't been super faithful about it. I am going to be better about it.

Anyway, I have a hiking buddy. We go on a hike a week during the summer. I don't do much hiking during the school year because my husband (do you guys use DH on here?) can't do much hiking.

Catz Tue, 12 Jul 2011 14:02:25 EST mileage data integrity What's the point

no worries, thought this was a TEAM thing
i'll just leave the team Mon, 11 Jul 2011 11:09:48 EST New to the Adventure Hi everyone,
I’m a twentyish year old looking to get healthy and live a super active lifestyle. I am starting out at about 220 pounds and ultimately want to get down to about 150. More importantly I want to turn my life into an adventure. I want off of the couch and into the world.

I have always loved the outdoors and I would really like to get involved in outdoorsy things. When I was younger I dreamed of hiking the entire Appalachian Trail in a single summer. I would love t... Sat, 9 Jul 2011 13:42:06 EST Hi from London Hi all,

I'm Laura, I'm 29 and live in London. I'm from Scotland, where I used to do lots of hiking. When I moved here, I stopped moving and the weight crept on. It's a little flat here in south-east England, but I'll do my best! Fri, 8 Jul 2011 06:00:32 EST Hi from Colorado Hello fellow hikers,

I have been hiking and biking in Jefferson County and the surrounding mountains for the last 15 years and just love it. When I was younger I use to climb the 14ers but now I am perfectly content with any hike with a good view. My husband and son also love to hike. However, my daughter (age 14) absolutely despises it. Any ideas on how to make it more enjoyable for her.

Wed, 6 Jul 2011 10:47:54 EST Hiking with a purpose Been on Sparkpeople for a few years, but some changes are due. So here I am. Sun, 26 Jun 2011 12:57:51 EST SP Calorie Burn Estimates for Hiking vs Body Bugg I have a Body Bugg and forgot to check the time and calorie burn when I got done with today's hike. While stopping on the way home to get milk, I did some mental arithmetic on my then calorie burn of 3 calories a minute, calculated probable time elapsed since coming off the mountain and deducted that off my reading.

Upon getting home, I uploaded the data for my fitness monitor to see where the calorie burn dropped off (I had it pegged to a 5 minute time frame and reality had it as ... It's called the Rock Island trail, it is a currently a 26 mile stretch and it's a an old railroad track that has been paved. I don't know if these are common or not.

I really didn't enjoy it all that much. I finally put my finger on it, the first 500 feet that I walked looked the same as the last 500 feet. It is a good path bike, run, and walk, but not for hiking. Does that make me a trail snob already???

I did work on my walking medi... Sun, 5 Jun 2011 00:21:10 EST Hello from Illinois I am at the start of my hiking hobby. 25 years ago we called it marching in the Army, and we carried a lot more than I plan on doing now.

I plan on hitting the easier park trails in the area. My daughter and I accidently found some while we were geocaching, another new hobby.

Matt

Fri, 3 Jun 2011 11:53:28 EST Happy Hiker in San Diego Not hiking as much as I'd like these days but its definitely one of my favorite forms of exercise.
