She's turning 20 so I guess I shouldn't blame pregnancy anymore! I join a program, lose weight, think I can go back to "normal" and gain it back, over and over for 20 years. I joined a weight loss group at work in January of 2009 and joined a gym. I was doing really well, but then I was in a car accident in July and hurt my back. I've still been able to lose weight, almost 20 pounds, due to diet change... Sun, 24 Jan 2010 09:15:07 EST New to the team Hi, my name is Sandra and I am glad to be here. Not glad of back pain, but hoping to find some answers and support here.
My battle bagan over 4 years ago when my problem foot worsened to the point that I began to sit more and more because of the pain. That weakened my back and caused pain that progressively worsened to the point I was seeking medical help after taking so many ibuprofen I began to worry about long term problems. I tried anti inflammatories, steroids, exercises, chiroprac... Sun, 17 Jan 2010 21:11:11 EST Sciatica is such an ugly word Today is a bad day. I have been dealing with chronic sciatica for the past four weeks off and on. I went to my doctor (pain management), and he prescribed a medrol dose pack. I was off of work for like two weeks. I went back last week, only to work 3 of the 5 days-pain started back! This week, I went to work 3 of the 5 days, and the pain is back pretty strong. The pain radiates into my upper thigh and right hip. It is running me crazy today, as pain meds only take the edge off. Doc sa... Thu, 14 Jan 2010 13:41:16 EST New to Forum Hi My name is Jacqi. I suffer from chronic back and neck pain along with hip bursitis. I know how difficult it is to workout when you are in pain. I recently purchased my own spin bike and since doing this my hip bursitis has been almost obsolete. Spinning is such a great cardio workout with out the impact on your joints! Looking forward to hearing more about what has worked for people with chronic back and neck pain. Mon, 11 Jan 2010 10:40:39 EST new to the group I am new to this group. I joined because I struggle with chronic back pain daily, and I am trying so hard to loose weight. Unhealthy habits along with steroids have caused me to BLOOM! I am very determined to get this extra weight off no matter how long it takes. I am not at a point where I can exercise, but I want to work toward it.

Taking one day at a time and working toward a healthier me. Thanks to JazzyDoc for telling me about this team. I have 4 ruptured disks, degenerative disk disease, osteo arthritis and spinal stenosis. Some days it's just hard to get out of bed, but I try to keep moving no matter what. I just need to do better and get more consistent. Losing a few more pounds would help too. Hope everyone is having a good week!
-Ellen Wed, 21 Oct 2009 00:21:02 EST Newbie with back pain I have been a member of Spark for a couple of weeks now.....about the same time that my back went out. Sat, 19 Sep 2009 11:14:10 EST Hi everyone 213 Hi, I'm Rachel and I am on a quest for weight loss. I do feel a bit hindered though, as my back aches most of the time. It's just a mild discomfort unless I bounce up and down. I think perhaps it might be due to carrying excess weight. It does somewhat limit the range of exercises I'm comfortable doing. I'm hoping that improved fitness will help ease the pain. Tue, 7 Jul 2009 23:47:07 EST I tried a new exercise yesterday Well it's the first time I've ever done this... Reverse Lunges. In stead of lunging forward you drop backward. I was amazed that I was able to do these as I usually ward off lunges because of my knees and back; however I found that they really worked my abs (probably due to the balancing factor), my glutes (especially) and my hamstrings. Doing the lunges this way was easier to control the stress on my knees because your weight is more or less on your anchor leg and by going backward it seems ... Mon, 25 May 2009 20:28:24 EST Don't let herniated discs stop you -- I didn't! Hi all, I've read through a lot of comments on disc issues, and as someone who has 3 herniated discs, I work out 3-5 times a week, and keep as healthy as I can. I was told the news in my mid-20s, and after 3 years, my pain is almost gone. I've chosen to not have surgery, but to challenge myself with exercise -- including running, pilates, and yoga, and healthy eating. Today I'm healthier than I ever have been but it's been a LONG road to recovery -- and it will never end. What's your story??? Thu, 21 May 2009 00:51:38 EST New to the team! My name is Jessica Coupe, I joined this group because I suffer from a congenital disorder where the lowest disc in my lumbar fused to my sacrum. This is not uncommon and typically does not cause many people serious problems, typically all that happens is that I just had a higher bending point in my back. After a while of being unfit and weak a disk in my back gave out and here i am, 3 years later, at the age of 20 with a herniate disk and sciatic nerve problems that affect my right hip.
... I'd like to begin exercising but am scared about what is safe to try.
Trish Sat, 21 Jun 2008 19:31:51 EST Anyone had a discogram? My neurosurgeon has ordered a discogram for me, but the appt is not until July 7th. I'm 33, mother of 4, home school teacher, mom, wife, home maker etc.
I've been on Spark for quite some time but had to stop because of an auto accident May 3rd.
Prior to the accident, I had lost 16lbs and was feeling GREAT. Well, I had to go through Physical Therapy and needless to say, I'm putting the weight back on. PT is over and I thought I could get back to my regular program (was doing FIRM videos and Weight Watchers). However, I tried 10 minutes of exercise this a.... Wed, 11 Jun 2008 15:51:00 EST * Just Me * Hello Everyone
Well I'm new to the team as I'm sure anyone knows I'm 25 and had back surgery Feb of 2007. Before the surgery i was taking anywhere from 23-37 pills a day to try and manage the pain. The day after i Had surgery i walked out of the hospital with no medications and told the doctor at the time that the pain from surgery was no where close to what i had been in. Now I'm in pain once again, and my physician refuses to give me anything at all for the pain because i made sure e... Mon, 9 Jun 2008 22:49:16 EST new to the team Hi there everyone,

I'm 33 and suffering from a herniated L4/L5 disc and an annular tear on L5/S1. I've been through physical therapy and have been exercising 3-4X a week, being extremely careful to engage my abs and keep my back straight.

I threw my back out *again* this week, and I'm totally bummed because it always messes with my motivation. I'm doing my PT exercises and trying really hard not to overdo it.

I'm going to walk (well, shuffle) around the bloc... Fri, 6 Jun 2008 10:37:06 EST Hello! My name is Heather, and I am a married mother of three young children. I've been pretty consistant with exercise for quite a while now, but it's food I need to get under control. Back in December, I believe, I had just finished walking the mall (for exercise), with my mother in law and my baby in a stroller, when I bent down to put a coat on my baby and my back just spazzed out. I was put on pain pills, muscle relaxers, and prednisone, which cleared it up for the time being. Unfortunately... Fri, 6 Jun 2008 10:03:38 EST Decompression Therapy????? I am new to your team and been on spark for about 2.5 months with a little break in there of 2-3 weeks. I joined this team because I have lived with back pain for about 10 years. Back in the beginning I saw a neuro surgeon and he immediately wanted to do surgery but that was not an option for me at the time. I'm an "old newbie" here on SP, which means I've been a member for awhile but not very active. I'm hoping to change that. 30
I've suffered from chronic back pain for several years now that seems to be getting worse instead of better. Two years ago I was diagnosed with scoliosis and arthritis. I am currently on an anti-depressant which helps with the pain, but my ultimate goal is to be free of medication. Any advice I can get is welcome! Fri, 18 Apr 2008 23:25:42 EST I'm new to this team and this website. I am so glad to find others that are going through the same type of back problems that I am. I wouldn't wish back pain on anyone, but I am really grateful for any advice that anyone can give me. I have chronic lower back pain sometimes with sciatica, sometimes not. No doctors can agree on the cause, but I was told that I had spodylosis when I was fifteen. I also have a severe tilt\ hump in my spine right at the base of my neck at the top of my shoulders. Not sure what this is either. Possibly... Thu, 17 Apr 2008 17:43:19 EST Keep me in your thoughts... I could use a boost! Good thoughts and positive energy would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks! Being that I have had surgery twice on my lower back and still live with the pain, I thought this might be the right place for me. Some days are better than others. I became seditary and my weight kept increasing. I started walking for exercise, but I would like to know what others are doing. Any suggestions would be most appreciated. Thanks for listening. I didn't have a problem with my weight until I hurt my back. I was finally diagnosed with SI joint pain 6 yrs ago. I have been in and out of work ever since and so has my weight. Tue, 11 Dec 2007 10:41:56 EST back surgery Hello, I had double fusion L4/L5 about a year ago. I also am suppose to have L3 and S1 and C5/C6 done also. I keep putting off the last 2. I have put on quite a bit of weight since surgery. I am having trouble finding exercises that I can do to help but are not soooo painful. Anything I try to do hurts more that it is even worth. I guess because I still have problems not taken care of. Any ideas for me? Fri, 7 Dec 2007 00:29:51 EST Newbie with low back pain Have suffered with this for many years. Had surgery in "95" and even though it didn't get rid of the pain, it kept me out of a wheelchair so I count myself VERY fortunate. Just wish I cold get the pain under control but with having Fibromyalgia on to of it, I'm stuck. Prescripion meds don't even touch it because of the FMS. Exercise wipes me out for several days. Tue, 6 Nov 2007 03:02:54 EST Hi Everyone Hi, I am a 28 year old, overweight mom and wife. I have been dealing with lower back pain since June and it makes it very difficult to exersize to loose weight. The doctor said that I have Sciatica, but when I started physical therapy a couple weeks ago, I was told that it could be something worse. I am waiting to go to the neurologist next week to find out what is going on. I would really appreciate any help or advice on what kind of workout would be safe for me.. Thanks!!! Fri, 2 Nov 2007 11:31:59 EST Thanks, Everybody! All your tips are very helpful. We do have a pool a few miles from us and we do use it. I love swimming.
Exercising in bed is a good idea, too. I'll try abs exercise there...just pulling my abs in and holding for a count of 5, increasing to 10 etc. I think that may help. I will try and extend my walking and, as has been said here, losing weight will make it easier.
Its nice to find encouragement here...thank you.
