My Council is great in the working relationship between professionals and volunteers. Being deaf has it challenges for me, yet the volunteers I work with see my strength and welcome me to different committees. My strength lies in being detail oriented and logistics. Just curious as to what everyone else's units are up to. Is fitness a priority or kind of a side-effect? Our unit hike a 50-mile section of the Appalachian Trail last summer (and summer before). Klondike derby next month is always a challenge. Got a ski trip planned for January also. I wish I could ski with them but I don't think that's gonna happen (not quite healed up enough). I've been the committee chair for our pack since my son was a Tiger. He is now a Webelos II and as of right now, has no plans to cross-over into Boy Scouts. I'm hoping he changes his mind. I'm looking forward to working with all of you. I need to loose weight and get in shape and thought this might help as scouting has helped me with many things over the past five years. Mon, 27 Oct 2014 15:25:17 EST Hiked Philmont! I lost about 30 pounds to get under the max weight for Philmont. We just got back from our trip today and I was able to hike 81 miles, mostly with ease because of the cardio I did beforehand. I'm so thrilled to have done it and am looking forward to training so that I'll be more prepared for Northern Tier! Mon, 28 Jul 2014 21:56:15 EST RTERRELL 3 I would like to lose70 pounds. I have lost so far with sparkspeople 24 pounds. I am impressed how well it works for me and my wife. Mon, 17 Feb 2014 19:09:15 EST Summer Time Gatherings While it is once again quite cold here, I find myself starting to look towards the summer. I was wondering, how active is your Pack or Troop during the summer?

Our troop stays active all year round. Which makes sense because it is so much easier to get outside for activities.

Our pack, however, is having a hard time embracing summer time gatherings. Fri, 7 Feb 2014 13:58:00 EST Blue & Gold This is the second year that my husband and I have been running the cub pack. Last year the Blue & Gold was run like it has for many years. They gave out awards, advancements, cross over to Boy Scout, Friends of Scouting and then lunch. It kind of feels like it is more for the parents than then scouts. This year we have been thinking of other ways to fit that stuff in, but have it more engaging for the scouts. Have there been any great ideas for Blue & Gold's that really worked for your ... Mon, 17 Sep 2012 13:25:25 EST 2011 Journey to Excellence How did everyone do this past year?

Our new Troop achieved Gold status (~1700 points). We benefited by having very easy comparisons to last year.

However the local Pack didn't even get to Bronze. A lot of last year's leaders crossed over when we started the new Troop. The Committee Chairman also moved out of the area so the Pack leadership really lost a lot of experience. When I rededicated myself to my health goals and became my son's den leader, I had really hoped this group would be helpful. I am not seeing a lot of posts. I just accepted an invitation to serve on an Eagle Scout Board of Review next week.

The typical questions are about the project, the boy's involvement in his troop, what he has learned about himself, and typical questions like "what is real leadership" and "What's your favorite (or least) point in the scout law". Then there's "if you could add a point to, or were asked to remove a point from the Scout Law, what would it be and why?"

At this point, the boys know the usua... Thu, 27 Jan 2011 10:41:18 EST CROSSOVER IS IN MY SIGHTS!!! Hi Everyone.I'm back again to begin sparking. It's been awhile. You know how much time is committed to scouting. Happy scouting Tue, 21 Dec 2010 19:25:34 EST Letters coming off uniform Does anyone have a suggestion related to the best way to reattach the red "Boy Scouts of America" letters which seem to be coming off of my uniform? I'm afraid that these are too small to be sewn on and something like Badge magic would be too large and would accumulate lots of dirt and make a big mess. I'm thinking about using SuperGlue but I'm not sure how well that works for clothing.

Any ideas appreciated. Sun, 12 Dec 2010 12:20:43 EST Journey to Excellence Have you looked at the new quality award program? Watched the webcast? Thoughts? I kind of like it. Looking forward to losing weight with all of you Thu, 2 Dec 2010 22:40:30 EST Meeting planning I thought it would be fun to share our ideas for our weekly den meetings and pack meetings. I normally try and plan one month in advance so that I have the boys accomplishing several things on top of having fun.

For our pack meeting we are planning several games so I decided to incorporate Christmas for December 1) we are having Santa's helper relays where each child has to carry no more than two packages to santa's sack and see which group fills the sack first. 2)y we are havi... Since I'm headed out to our OA Lodge Fall Fellowship this weekend I figured I'd ask the question:

Are you a brother?
when and where did you do your ordeal?

My answers:
Yes, Brotherhood member
1975 at Camp Eastman in west-central Illinois (near Nauvoo). Fri, 10 Sep 2010 08:40:41 EST Popcorn, exciting opportunity or evil drudgery? Ok, it's that time of year. Are you selling popcorn? If so, what methods? Do you look forward to it or fear it? do you use scout accounts to incent your scouts (and parents)?

My answers:

- Yes.
- Online, table sales, phone calls, face-to-face, door-to-door, harassing co-workers, etc.
- eh, is what it is. I hate parking outside for two months while the popcorn occupies my garage.
- just trying out the scout accounts this year. We'll see. Thu, 9 Sep 2010 10:30:11 EST Summer is over, now what? Summer is over but fall is here! What does your unit have planned for the rest of the year and into 2011? Wed, 1 Sep 2010 14:48:39 EST If not 13, then 10, what would you take out? OK, a while back I asked what you'd add as the 13th point of the scout law. So today, you get the opposite question. What would you take out if you had to reduce the scout law to a round 10 items? Hmmm?

I think you could make an argument that courteous and kind are slightly redundant, so strike kind. After that it's tough. Can you be trustworthy without being loyal or obedient? Can you be courteous without being clean? Aren't helpful people also friendly? I'm not sure. I t... Wed, 25 Aug 2010 14:42:10 EST Impact on your scouting career Scouter999 asks an interesting question in the huddle today, "who has had the most impact on your scouting career?" I'll expand the question to include "beyond your parents" as we all know the influence parents play on successful scouts.

I'll say my Scoutmaster as a youth. It started today... the postcard reminders for all the cub scout adult training and meetings. Not that I have ever really hung up my hat for the summer. My den of boys has meet once a month, and the pack has meet once a month. I have had one pack budget meeting in June, a meeting with our sponsor in July, and a two hour back to school night training session just a few days ago. Still, summer is sort of a scouting break for cub scouts, and I realize that with school just around the corner,... My 1st Class scout son is having some SERIOUS behavior issues as of late. I hate to do it, but the one thing he seems to take seriously is scouts. But his behavior is anything BUT scout like. I can't afford to pay the money for him to "hang out" once a week if he's not going to do the work (which he hasn't earned a merit badge since the summer, let alone WORKED on one) or acting the part.

What do you think???
