I lasted about 15 seconds and the tops of my thighs burned like fire and I jumped off of it. I would watch others going for an hour and it blew my mind. It also became a challenge. I bought one just for the purpose of conquering it. I started using it until I built up to about 1 1/2 minutes but with the front of my thighs seriously burning. I bought all types of "pain free" rubs to put on my thighs and kept trying. Eventually, I de... I went through the features with the delivery/tech guy and also did a successful test run on the machine. He demonstrated everything that I asked about in the 20 mins he had before leaving to make his next delivery. We covered the speakers, console, incline as well as the fold away feature. It had looked simple enough when I had watched him release the latch on the arms lift them from the sleeve onto the magnet... My life has gone through some huge changes in that time and despite my efforts (I admit I've given up several times) I've done nothing but gain weight. I have a lower back injury which at its worst has me laying in a hospital bed for 4 days straight and right now on a good day I can stand up straight for about 5 minutes. When I was doing physical therapy I was feeling amazing, normal even. But when I stopped everything went back to "nor... I'm a newbie in this group and I have a confession to make! We own an elliptical. I have NOT grown to love it yet. BUT I'm striving to do so. I really want to like it. I NEED to like it. :) SO, I found this group so that I could learn more about using my elliptical and learning to love it!

Thanks for sharing your experiences and your love for the elliptical with me! :)

--Missy-- Tue, 24 Jul 2012 14:33:41 EST I'm new to this team, but not to the elliptical! I used to be on SparkPeople several years ago and lost 115 pounds by jogging 3 miles a day on the elliptical, but then I got pregnant with my fourth child, stopped exercising and by the time she turned a year old I had gained back all the weight I had lost. Since this past May I have been back on SparkPeople and decided to look for an Elliptical Lovers' Team. I am so glad I found this group! This past week I have begun jogging again. I have been doing 20 minutes a day and plan to add 5 mi... Fri, 20 Jul 2012 22:16:52 EST Weird Foot Pain? I thought I'd see if any of you have experienced this/know the cause!

I've been increasing my workouts lately and hitting more distance on the elliptical. More recently, I have been spending most of my workout going forward as opposed to the intervals I would do going forward and backward because going backward aggravates my back.

I worked out in the morning yesterday, and at night, the area on the back of my foot, near my ankle- kind of on the sides of my achilles ten... Wed, 18 Jul 2012 09:48:19 EST Hi, I'm new to the team! The elliptical is by far my favorite cardio ever! I can't stand the treadmill, or the bikes. I always go to the elliptical. If one isn't available, I go to whatever that thing is called that's kinda like the elliptical but has handles and you can swing your legs, run, or stair step on it. I forget what it's called. But 90% of the time, it's the elliptical. And when I set my Nook down and start reading my book, I could go on for miles on that thing! Glad I found this team!! I've already lost about 5-7 lbs from eating better and using this form of exercise! I have a bunch of wonderful pets that me and my husband have rescued, and also run my own daycare with four toddlers. Thu, 9 Jun 2011 14:14:06 EST New to elliptical and starting over on SP I have an elliptical at home now and am beginning to try to use it at least 5 days a week. So far I like it. It hurts my joints so much less than the treadmill. Mine can be plugged in or also works without power. Currently I am using it without power and I don't go very fast, but I try to keep going about 45 minutes. I work up a good sweat and I am ready to be done about 10 minutes before I finish, so I push it a little at the end.

Does anyone know how accurate the ellitpical ... I can't wait to be able to use it; I'm waiting for the technician to help me finish the install. One of the parts broke off during shipment. It was a 300 lb package. I'm finding the intervals really difficult as I seem to just want to keep cranking it out instead, going slow on my mini is really just not a pleasant or fulfilling experience.

Tue, 27 Jul 2010 23:50:51 EST Step by Step I can only last on the elliptical for 5 mins top. Has anyone else progressed over time and how did you build your stamina? I would love to crank out at least 20 minutes. I've been forcing myself to do either 30 or 45 minutes. I was so drained I could not keep my 5 day commitment. I can do 20 minutes per day with my eyes closed. Bring it on! When I go to the Gym the Elliptical is my exercise machine of choice. Another exercise I recommend if you have access to it is treading water in the pool. Thu, 15 Oct 2009 21:12:57 EST Hello everyone! I'm Litelight, My cardio machine of choice is the elliptical. I was intimidated by the machine at first, and wouldn't go near it. But I tried the elliptical one day, and have been in love ever since. I do intervals for 90 minutes starting at level 7, then go up one level every 20 minutes. Guess I just like pushing buttons too. Tue, 25 Aug 2009 14:35:43 EST Love Elliptical for nine years now! I do lots of exercising at gyms, pools, outdoors, but my go to machine has always been the elliptical! I never get used to it, its always a challenge as I do interval training with it. Its such a power workout, I only do it on alternate days to give my muscles a rest! I am doing great with my goals, and the only thing I have trouble with is sleep, which i suspect causes me to lose weight slower than I should be. Tue, 25 Aug 2009 13:19:15 EST elliptical vs. treadmill I have a great treadmill, but people write about the calories burned on an elliptical and it seems to be higher in the same amount of time.
One big concern I have is my knees- I know one of them can kind of move out of joint once in a while, but it's not when I am walking, so I am wondering if it would be OK for me to use an elliptical.
Does anyone have an opinion on calories burned and how hard it is on the knees? I use it when I want personally heavier workout (otherwise I do interval and just change up the resistance). I'm not all that fit but hill climb REALLLYY kicks my butt. I can't finish at the peak of it, I always have to move the resistance down a few notches. It's one of my fitness goals to be able to do the whole thing without changing resistance! :) Thu, 6 Aug 2009 00:33:58 EST Hello Im new here Hello Im new to this site my name is lelia Im 24 I found out about sparkpeople when I was searching the web to find out how many calories I need to burn to lose weight. Wed, 22 Jul 2009 14:55:52 EST Hello! Hi there. I just got an elliptical machine this week and love working out on it compared to my treadmill. I was surprised how many more calories I burn. I have been using the workouts pre-installed on the machine. Is this the best way to use the machine or are there any better workouts to use?

Thu, 16 Jul 2009 11:56:07 EST Hey there! My ultimate goal here is to get to 130 lbs and see from there. I've got about 100 lbs. to go but I'm doing alright so far..getting ready to kick it up a notch soon and get more consistent. :)

Anyway, just thought I'd say hello! Sun, 5 Jul 2009 17:39:19 EST Will the elliptical make my legs and butt bigger?? Does anyone know the answer to this? Or mainly how I can use the elliptical without making my legs and butt bigger? Well, I signed up because I don't know what I would do without the elliptical equipment at the gym so, I totally consider myself an Elliptical Lover. I have a superficial blood clot in the back of my left calf so running is very difficult for me but I use two different types of elliptical machines at the gym that increase my heart rate immensely and give me a great cardio workout. Mon, 18 May 2009 14:50:08 EST I finally found my fellow elliptical freaks. Hi everyone,

Wow, I love the elliptical. I was actually creeping myself out because I like it so much. I'll just jam some tunes and drift off into some pseudo-hypnotic state of mind for 45 minutes. When I come to, I'm covered in sweat.

I'm even toying with the idea of doing a "marathon" on the elliptical some day.

Anyway, while I like it, it also seems to be good to be true, and I know I'm supposed to mix up the cardio exercises. Plus running is just coole... Fri, 1 May 2009 06:30:09 EST Which intensity is best? My elliptical has 3 types of programs: 1 is weight loss, low intensity (2 to 5) and 30 to 45 min with max rpm of 70. #2 is Aerobic which has a bit higher resistance and rpm. #3 is Competition which is very high resistance and rpm (I have only done it once and I thought I would die!). or you can make your own program. The book that came with it says to see weight loss that you should use the first program. I don't know what is best? I don't really work up much of a sweat with it. Should... I've been on the elliptical for six weeks now. The last three weeks have been good solid cardio work outs from 45 - 60 minutes each. I also throw in a walk or a bike ride when I can. I can see my legs have firmed up significantly, and I can see in my face that I'm losing fat... But the scale isn't showing anything... How long was it before you could see big improvements? Mon, 27 Apr 2009 18:59:17 EST How Many Revolutions does it take to make a Mile? I got a new Elliptical!!!! I cancelled my gym membership. Its a Cheap one from Walmart GOld Gym Stride Trainer 300 to start off with to make sure Im going to stick with it before purchasing a more exspensive machine. Fri, 24 Apr 2009 10:02:31 EST Found my team Hi, My name is June. In the past two years I've managed to lose 35 pounds and have gained back 25. I'm currently working with a trainer to try to keep myself on task and for daily cardio I use the elliptical machine at the gym and at home. The elliptical machine works best for me because of issues that I have with my back. It seems to be less painful than walking. So, here I am. My goal is to do at lest 30 minutes/day on the machine. My other goal is to cut back on carbs and fat. I ... Tue, 21 Apr 2009 09:59:23 EST perfection in a metal machine My friend who runs on our college track team pointed out that an elliptical is a better workout than a treadmill because you have to push the pedals rather than lifting your feet off the belt. Today I did 45 min on the elliptical at the gym. 5 min forward intervals with 2 min backwards intervals at a level 6 (whoot increasing) and speed intervals during the choruses of the songs i was listening to. the result?? 700 cals burned!! Tue, 21 Apr 2009 00:05:59 EST Please suggest a footwear When I first started on my elliptical a month ago my toes felt numb after 10 minutes. Now I know to wiggle my toes and move from heel to toe and now my toes don't get numb until the last 10 min of a 50 or 60 minute workout. Does anyone know of a type or brand of shoe that would help with this? I know sketchers has a "walking" shoe with a funky heel to create more momentum. Hi all.

I finally broke down and bought an elliptical for my home. It was a remanufactured Life Fitness 95xi and I was told it only had 1600 miles on it. When I got the unit (shipped from CA), the tension felt like it was on "10" resistance instead of "1" so I called the seller who claimed that because it's such a new machine, it needs to be "broken in". I asked a repair company over the phone who says that it sounds like the magnets are too close to the flywheel but the seller (wh... Thu, 26 Feb 2009 10:57:50 EST Here's a cool thing Does everyone else know about Webwalking USA and the American Discovery Trail? I just learned about this myself. You can input your number of steps, mileage or time peddling/walking/running/whatevering and take a vertual trip across the US, from Delaware to California. If a bunch of people on this team chipped in their steps, we'd probably make the 5000+ miles trip in next to no time.
See
alkingusa.htm
for more info.

Denise Thu, 26 Feb 2009 08:42:58 EST I'm new here I'm Megan and I'm an elliptical addict. We have the owners manual, but there is something on it we just can figure a purpose for. On the right lower edge of the monitor is a small plastic cover and inside is a small "jack".. to plug something into. like an earphone jack. Does anybody know the purpose of this? Thu, 19 Feb 2009 20:42:27 EST To anyone who has a Heart Rate Monitor Hello everyone...I am really wanting to purchase a HRM but there is so many different ones out there to choose from. Mon, 16 Feb 2009 03:46:33 EST Which elliptical should I buy? Hey Everyone-

I have decided that in order to get the exercise in that I need daily, I am going to have to purchase an elliptical. There are so many out there I don't know which one to choose? I'd like something reasonably priced with a stride of 20" or longer. Any suggestions? Sun, 8 Feb 2009 10:17:26 EST Who to trust?!?! So, when I go to the fitness tracker and add 15 min of cardio on the elliptical, it tells me that I burned like 300 calories, but my elliptical tells me that I only burned about 100 calories(I am rounding these numbers), so who do I trust, SP with 300 calories, or the elliptical at 100 calories. I don't have a HRM, but if someone does, do you know about how many calories you burn in 15, 20, 25 etc min? I am so confused, there are too many differences in numbers. Sat, 7 Feb 2009 15:08:03 EST Incline vs. resistance for calorie burn I'm still figuring out all the bells and whistles on the machines at the gym, but here's a thing that confuses me: The readout seems to be indicating higher calorie burn at higher inclines more than at higher resistance. That doesn't make sense to me, since changes in incline also work different muscles (e.g., setting 1 works everything from calves to glutes; 18 is working primarily glutes). Why would an incline of 18 and resistance of 1 burn more calories than an incline of 1 and resistance ... Thu, 5 Feb 2009 08:43:42 EST what to do? Ok, I'm up 1 hour the elliptical machine... Sun, 1 Feb 2009 23:17:38 EST A question about how long I should do it I know that you are not supposed to do more than 35 minutes because after that the body starts breaking down the muscles for the exercise, but what if you do 30 min, then rest an hour or two, and then do another 30 min. Will the body still begin using muscle for energy, or will it go back to using stored fat for energy? Sun, 1 Feb 2009 15:56:07 EST My hubby surprised me! I'm new here, and i'm sorry if this question has been asked a million times already, but i'm looking for a little input!

I have my own elliptical, and it doesn't have a place for me to enter my weight. However it does have a heart rate monitor. So I generally do 30 minutes, with an average heart rate of about 160, and it says I burn about 300 calories. However, when I input it here in my Spark People exercise log, it says that I most likely burnt about 430 calories. I... Mon, 15 Sep 2008 17:45:31 EST Love my Elliptical - Commit 2 GET fit! I do believe I was a member on this team a year ago. WELL.... I am back... and ready to join in the fun. I recently feel back in love with my elliptical. Sat, 13 Sep 2008 21:37:38 EST Elliptical Challenge for September The seasons are changing but the challenge is basically the same select the minutes you want to accomplish and go for it. Remember to keep it interesting for yourself by varying the routines you do. Also pick your worst exercise (the one you hate to do) and try and do it twice a week.
I am going for 250 minutes for the month and I haven't picked my worst exercise yet. There are quite a few to chose fun. Wed, 3 Sep 2008 01:38:19 EST Hi from Virginia! Hi Everyone!

I'm pretty new to Spark People and just joined the Elliptical Lovers! I love my Elliptical! I had just bought it a few months before I injured my knee and was REALLY getting into making it 45 min and with an incline and resistance! I have been off of it for three months since tearing the ACL in my knee and it has bout killed me. My doctor now has cleared me to get back onto it but at a very slow pace. I'm barely able to do five minutes with my knee right now but I'm ho... Tue, 2 Sep 2008 12:21:18 EST new @ spark and love the elliptical Hi I am new here and am loving the community feeling and support. I have injured my knees in the past so find it painful to run on a treadmill but love that the elliptical is right there next to the treadies so i can run away the pounds and not feel any pain. Mon, 1 Sep 2008 23:03:51 EST For the elliptical, which is better? I was just curious, which is better, going faster at a lower level on an elliptical or a higher level at a lower speed? Mon, 25 Aug 2008 07:52:48 EST Help! Review needed I am going to look at a Proteus EEC 5550 tomorrow, anyone who owns one?? Please give me review!! Wed, 20 Aug 2008 14:08:36 EST Challenging Yourself on the Elliptical How often do people change up their elliptical routine? I'm on week 2 of being back in the gym, and I've already upped my resistance level by one. And every 5 minutes I do a killer minute where I go just as fast as I can sustain. I read about doing that in Body for Life and I thought it sounded smart: do some intense interval training.

Also: what about going backwards? I had knee surgery 3 years ago, and my PT told me of a few exercises/machines to NEVER use (like the extended l... Tue, 19 Aug 2008 18:20:03 EST Reebok RE3000 Elliptical Cross-Trainer Does anyone own a Reebok RE3000 Elliptical Cross-Trainer, I'd like to know if it is a good make to purchase? I can get one second hand. Tue, 19 Aug 2008 15:39:08 EST New to Spark & ready to spark some fat off! Hi All!

I started doing the elliptical and love it! I want to lose about 50 lbs and was wondering if it's better to do the elliptical and weights or elliptical first and then weights. I'm 46 and my sister is 53 and she runs 2-3 miles a day and has no interest in weights at all, she's lost down to her goal weight but wondering about what is the quickest way to lose....

Thanks!

Donna Mon, 18 Aug 2008 22:31:36 EST HELP! HELP! HELP! Hey everyone! Over the weekend, I brought a second hand Elliptical from someone. It is a very nice machine it is a Precor 700. When I brought it, the lady told me to spray some oil on the inside of the joint because the machine had been sitting a while and makes loud noises when you workout. I did spray some WD 40 on it and still, I hear these loud creaking noises coming from the back wheel area! What should I do, open up the back and spray the insides? Any help would be greatly appreciate... Mon, 18 Aug 2008 16:19:38 EST Team Member Pat Collins Passed away To the Friends of Pat:

I was honored to receive a telephone call from Pat's mother this evening who sadly called to inform me of his sudden death August 3 from an apparent heart attack. Pat's mother told me that she knows how much he cared for his Spark friends and how much they meant to him.. It was in her grief and sorrow, that **she** was reaching out to **me** -- to all of us -- concerned that we would worry about Pat. What an incredible woman!!! And just like Pat, I felt like ... Sun, 17 Aug 2008 21:26:24 EST Measuring calories burned on the elliptical I've been using the elliptical in my gym, and although it asks me to enter my weight, and I do, it seems like I get short changed in calorie counting. Now, I'm not using what the machine says soley, but I wonder what's going on.

I worked out for 25 minutes today on an alpine program and on a level 5 of 1-20, and after 25 minutes of huffing and puffing and some serious sweating, it says I've burned just over 100 calories. I went the equivalent of 4.2 mph.

I also used the... Fri, 15 Aug 2008 01:13:08 EST New Elliptical Lover here! Hello Everyone! Im Jenn. I have been in love with the elliptical trainer for as long as I can remember. I remember when I first saw it sitting there in the gym back in the90's. It was love at first push! Anyways just wanted to say Hello. Please feel free to stop by my page and add me as a friend. I am always looking for new people to talk to! :) Sat, 9 Aug 2008 13:36:48 EST Backwards or forwards? I heard there is no difference going backwards or forwards on the E. I heard you burn the same amount of calories and you work the same muscles. I also heard that going backwards is bad for your knees which I can agree with cause my knees ached after doing a workout that required me to go backwards. I just ignore it when it tells me to go backwards now. Thu, 7 Aug 2008 10:51:26 EST August Elliptical Challenge For August select your minutes you would like to make and vary up your routine on the machine. Hello All!
I am new here and really looking forward to turning my NordicTrack back from being a clothes rack to my favorite elliptical. Sun, 27 Jul 2008 13:33:53 EST Hi I'm new to SP.

Found the Elliptical link on someone's page. I've been working out since 1997 and that has included Elliptical. I workout 4x week on Elliptical for 30-45 min., and do 1/2 hour Ab Lab and 1/2 hour Circuit Training 2x week.

Looking forward to cruising SP and learning from others. Fri, 25 Jul 2008 18:27:09 EST Does it feel odd to you? So I usually do the precor elliptical but this time I decided to use the cybex. I felt quite awkward on the machine then I realized I was moving the same side arm and leg whereas the precor elliptical you move opposite arms and legs. Has anyone else experienced the oddness or have you gotten used to it. I'm thinking I may need to do this machine now to help lose some more weight since this movement is definitely not natural and will be new to my body. Wed, 23 Jul 2008 19:02:32 EST New Woman on the block Hi everyone! I am brand spankin' new in here....first day. Time to work out more consistently.
