SparkPeople Fighting PCOS Team Messageboard For women who are tired of Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome controlling their lives and their weight. SparkPeople Fighting PCOS Team Messageboard Developing PCOS in early 30s? Hi there,
I do not yet know if I have PCOS. I came on here hoping to discover if anyone else has a similar experience to me. I'm 31, have always had terribly debilitating pain from my periods, was told by two doctors I have endometriosis (but I have never been laparascopically diagnosed). I have always been thin, occasionally underweight. I had a body fat test about four years ago and my percentage was very low.

I normally have irregular periods, but I have never missed one. ... Tue, 8 Dec 2015 15:21:10 EST Caffeine? Sat, 26 Apr 2014 04:54:39 EST Quick Question I went to the doctor a week ago Wednesday and she told me she was pretty sure I had PCOS based on my symptoms, but would do lab work to find out for sure. She was so confident though, that she went ahead and started me on Metformin. I got a letter in the mail yesterday with my lab results and all my levels and both my A1C and Glucose levels were extremely amazing and considered normal. If PCOS makes you insulin-resistant, wouldn't they have been high if I had PCOS? Any feedback would be great... Or maybe we could start a challenge? Fri, 4 Jan 2013 12:28:20 EST Starting again... Hi! I'm restarting my page and restarting my diet after giving birth to my 4th child just two months ago. I was diagnosed with PCOS after my 1st child was born because I had difficulties breastfeeding related to poor breast development. I had some testing done before to see about PCOS, but the doctors were reluctant to give that diagnosis since I got pregnant shortly after the testing - I had been trying for 2 1/2 years. I've since had other testing that showed high androgen levels and border... Fri, 5 Oct 2012 23:10:03 EST Introducing Myself Hi, I'm Jeni! I've been dealing with problems related to irregular periods since I was a teen. Now that I'm married I've added fertility problems to the list. I've had all the tests for PCOS and they come back normal, but my Dr. thinks this is the problem. I'm pretty frustrated with my health issues right now and I'm refocusing my efforts on healthy diet and exercise. Hoping this works! Sun, 16 Sep 2012 12:05:53 EST Metformin issues? I recently have been put on Metformin to help me ovulate so I can get pregnant. I was fine the first week on 1 tablet, but ever since I bumped up to two like they told me I feel weird. The stomach issues went away, I could deal with that. Now I feel, like, fuzzy brained. My reaction times are slower, I have trouble thinking and comprehending, I feel dizzy and my heart pounds when I stand up. I am also very fatigued. I just feel off. Has anyone else had this issue? Thu, 19 Jul 2012 01:02:34 EST Greetings from the new girl :) As a dancer, I struggled with anorexia from the time I was 12 years old, then I was 5'2'' and weighed about 85 pounds. When I was 15, my periods stopped suddenly and I gained about 30 pounds in a matter of months, probably saving me from myself. I was convinced I was doing it to myself so I fought my body as hard as I could until about five months ago during my freshman year of college. I was too tired to get out of bed, passing out at work, and gaining a pound a week even though I was eatin... Sat, 18 Feb 2012 18:52:34 EST All that jiggles is not jello (The new girl) 5 years ago, I was a size 3. I had two kids and was still a size 3. I was cute. And then I woke up one morning and there was a hair on my chin. Just one. Seemed harmelss. My mom has one. My sister has one, I felt like I was part of the club. Just one single hair. So I plucked it. Two days later there were three hairs. A month after that I was waxing my entire chin. And then the cystic acne started. I'd never had a pimple my whole life, and suddenly my face was covered in scars. I... Tue, 14 Feb 2012 20:36:11 EST Progress For the past few weeks, I've been trying to cook our dinners low-carb, since my hubby is doing Atkins. I figured that I could add more veggies, fruit, and dairy in for sides for myself and our 16-month-old son. Which so far, has meant lots of steamed frozen veggies - but cauliflower and broccoli are a good thing, and the baby loves it. I picked up exersizing in the lap pool at the gym for 30 minutes once a week again.

So far, I've dropped about 8lbs since New Year's. Most days, I j... Tue, 14 Feb 2012 08:56:01 EST New to the team So this sucks. After 3-4 years of struggling with my weight and no matter my diet or how much I exercised the pounds just kept on comming, I was actually estatic to learn I have PCOS. For me it was an answer and proof that I wasn't crazy with my weight issues. It also explained the random course hairs I had gotten on my neck and navel. I never asked about that because honestly, who wants to ask a doctor "so is it normal that I'm this hair?"

Now after only 3 weeks of knowing I have ... Wed, 1 Feb 2012 10:07:36 EST 1-2 hrs too much? is 1-2 hours of exercise 4-5 days aweek, not ALL cardio, too much for a pcoser? I have lost 12 pounds and can't lose any more. I have no idea what to do. is 1-2 hrs too much? because I know with losing 10 pounds, I NEEDED at least 45min to get results Fri, 27 Jan 2012 22:19:26 EST Aspirin and Periods I started an aspirin regimen in December for a possible clotting issue and have noticed a change in length and flow of my periods since then. I was curious if anyone had noticed a change when they started taking an aspirin a day. I haven't been able to find much info online about it and mine are actually shorter and lighter which contradicts what I have found. Just wondering what others have experienced if they have started on aspirin therapy. Sun, 22 Jan 2012 11:12:49 EST to fruit or to not to fruit i decided to get oranges just the other day. and i'm not sure if eating oranges has made me put on a pound and a half or not. or its just the normal up and down of weightloss. also, it seems to make my blood sugar lower and makes me shakier?

does anyone else experience this?

i'd deeply appreciate the help.

thanx. Tue, 10 Jan 2012 23:51:59 EST pcosers & more exercise umm, i have noticed losing weight, even in small amounts pretty slowly is harder in my late 20s than as a teen with pcos.

so i was wondering if its the norm for me to need extra exercise to see results.

i can get results (thank god) but for me it won't show up with 30 minutes of exercise. i need at least 45-60 min of exercise 4-5 days a week for it to show up.

is this norm? Wed, 7 Dec 2011 19:13:20 EST fats and pcos I was just curious about how fats , good nutritional fats like coconut oil and avocados affect pcos.

i know the general consensus is decreased carbs and calorie counting really helps pcos with weight loss. but i was wondering does it matter about the nutritional fats? Tue, 18 Oct 2011 14:19:09 EST How to respond when people ask about kids? I was diagnosed with PCOS about two months ago. My husband and I have been trying to have a baby since we got married in July, 2010. Before my diagnosis, when people would ask when we're going to have a baby, I answered one of two ways: 1) "We're still just having too much fun together." or 2) "We're trying, and it's in God's hands when it happens." Even with my diagnosis, I realize it's still in God's hands, but now I also realize there is a medical reason behind my inability to get pregn... It kind of looks like this isn't a very active team right now, but who knows!

I was diagnosed at 15 with PCOS based on my outward symptoms: irregular periods, facial hair, overweight, alopecia, etc. An ultrasound of my ovaries at the time did not show any cysts. It was not until recently, 10 years later, that I began to question my diagnosis more. I had learned about PCOS-like diseases and wanted new imaging of my ova... Thu, 14 Apr 2011 00:03:07 EST Intro - PCOS, Stress and Get me out of here! Hi all! My name is Meridith and I was diagnosed with PCOS in 2003. Although it runs in the family, most of my symptoms have disappeared. I'm left with Metformin and about 50 pounds more than I'm comfortable with. In an effort to recommit to weight loss, my partner and I have started following some low GI guidelines but oh my gosh I'm so hungry and grouchy! I blow over at a touch of stress and that can't be helping either. My goal: to get out of this place physically and mentally! :) Tue, 12 Apr 2011 10:34:52 EST Hello! Hello!
My name is Melissa and I'm 25 years old. I was diagnosed with PCOS 2 years ago and have been struggling with it since. The biggest impacts that I struggle with as a result of PCOS are definately difficulty losing weight/easy to gain, and also mood swings, tiredness, and lack of a regular period. I'm excited that there's a group within this awesome site for this disorder! I'm looking forward to getting support and encouragement as I try maintaining a healthier lifestyle! :) Thu, 7 Apr 2011 20:22:21 EST Tiredness..... I try to stay away from anything that's pure sugar, like candy, and white bread, white pasta and white rice. When I succeed at these goals my body is a lot happier! It took me a long time through trial and error to figure out that my body simply does not tolerate these things well and when I have them.... I pay for it and it sets me back on my weight loss goals! What about you? Sat, 2 Apr 2011 10:44:29 EST Spironactalone Is anyone taking spironactalone? My Doc gave me an RX for it, but I took it one day and hated it! It made me so thirsty all day, I drank 128 oz of water, when I usually only drink 80, and was still so thirsty I had a hard time even sleeping. I since have not taken it again, and am wondering is this a side effect that goes away or is it something you just kind of get used to? I'm 26 years old and was diagnosed with PCOS in 2004. I had symptoms of it when I was about 16 (hair growth, acne) but didn't start gaining weight until after high school. Sun, 21 Nov 2010 05:03:14 EST Hello from NC Hello everyone! I am 33 and just recently diagnosed with PCOS. For years I have had several symptoms that have gone undiagnosed by a range of doctors from endrocrinologist to OBGYN. Several thought I didn't fit the profile and pushed it off as pre-diabetic, or mentioned it a possibility but didn't elaborate. Several years have passed with no answers until recently. After deciding to have children I met with my dr. to make sure things could happen, she ran several blood test and scans. Aft... Hi, I'm not quite sure what to write as I've never had much courage to write on message boards before. But I don't want to have my life run for me by a medical condition and so I'm being brave. I was diagnosed when I was about 5 years ago when I was 19, but was informed I could've had it for quite a few years longer.
I want to change my life and not let this beat me, but no one I know understands how much of a struggle it has been so far, and I still have a long way to go and I don't wa... Mon, 6 Sep 2010 07:57:54 EST You might want to check into this I had two different doctors diagnose me with PCOS when I was trying to get pregnant. I just saw an endocrinologist to see what I have to do now that I'm not wanting to get pregnant. Turns out, I have a problem with the way my prolactin works. (I never had that hormone tested). My prolactin problem made me show many of the symptoms of PCOS, but I'm not PCOS. Apparently, my body thought I lactating (but of course i wasn't) so all my other hormones were thrown off.
I know many of you a... I mean, how much is a lot?

I've cut out straight up sugar, increased my protein (which is hard because I try to eat vegetarian), and am getting carbs from fruit and veggies.

Thanks for all the help and input. Just joined this group before work. I was diagnosed with the stupid pcos in 1997. I've been vegetarian since then, so I've maintained about "only" 30lbs overweight. I went to the dr yesterday (my glucose is considered normal, so i don't qualify for meds), and she told me to do the smart4life cookie diet, since i'm so overweight and all, and my blood work is normal. Has anyone tried that? It seems to work, but I wonder if it works for pco. Wed, 26 Aug 2009 08:57:43 EST Anyone want to do a weightloss challenge? Just joined this group but did not see any challenges. I know how hard it is for us to lose weight and keep t off due to our hormones. I am looking for more of an accountability group. maybe we can set a daily or weekly goal and motivate each other to keep it.
I know at this point that even if i do not lose pounds atleast i am moving my body and keeping my heart healthy.
anyone interested?? So, what do you consider to be your greatest challenge, in regard to dealing with PCOS, on your journey to become a healthier person?

For me, I think it's just the frustration of seeing others losing so much more weight than I have in the same time frame.

What's yours? Tue, 25 Aug 2009 19:40:36 EST Hello Hi, I just joined this team. I was diagnosed with PCOS 2 years ago and well it's still hard to deal with, especially since so many people don't know what it is, including some medical professionals. It's nice to have a group of people who know what you are going through. :) Tue, 25 Aug 2009 10:32:57 EST How were you diagnosed with PCOS? There seems to be some dispute in the medical community about how to diagnose PCOS. One of my dr.'s says I dont have PCOS based on my lab work and another says I do based on my ultrasound. I knew I had it the first time I read a list of symptoms, but
I am curious how others have been diagnosed. Tue, 11 Aug 2009 14:19:55 EST skinny doctors *sigh* OK I'm just here to rant really... but I don't know if any of you have experienced this so you may feel the same. I've read a few posts where there seems to be people who've had problems with Doctors who know nothing about PCOS. I have this problem exactly, but what's worst of all is my doctor is so skinny and has never been fat and never had to lose any weight that she doesn't have a clue what it's like to have to get on those scales every three months and be told you're not working hard eno... Ok, I have 99 pounds to lose, which seems like a huge number but I know little steps lead to big journeys so I'm little stepping today. My goal for this week is to lose 2 pounds, and hopefully try out some Yoga at home (space permitting).

So what's different this time? Firstly, I've made a pro... Thu, 6 Aug 2009 12:12:00 EST sugar substitutes I've heard splenda is bad for you, and artificial sweeteners actually increase appetite and cravings for sweets. Do you think that with having pcos, spelnda is the best? Tue, 4 Aug 2009 12:35:15 EST New to the group I am so happy to have found this group! I was diagnosed with PCOS about 8 months ago. My endo was not helpful at all. She put me on the birth control pill. I said to her, isn't it harder to lose weight when you have pcos, and she said no its hard for everone. I had lots of side effects from the pill, so I went to my gyn and she put me on the nuva ring. It is working alot better.

Oh I am 38, have 3 children, so I'm not trying to get pregnant. Mon, 3 Aug 2009 00:08:53 EST dexamethasone Is anyone else on dexamethasone?

My gyno, who originally diagnosed me put me on a low dose to bring down my DHEAS levels - which it did - but when she took me off, they spiked again. She sent me to an endo b/c she said she didn't know how to deal with it and it was bad to be on dexamethasone for any length of time (as it is a steroid).

My endo just kept prescribing it w/ no concerns about long-term effects. I've complained about weight gain, increase appetite from ... Mon, 27 Jul 2009 16:12:33 EST Who I am.... I hope this is the correct area to start because I'm new to all of this. Mon, 22 Jun 2009 14:19:40 EST Frustrated I went to see a "doctor" the other day. She turns out to be a nurse practicioner and all she wanted to do was put me on birth control pills. I explained to her that I have tried those but they don't do anything for PCOS (atleast not for me). She tells me that it would regulate my period. Personally, that is the least of my worries. It's all of those other lovely symptoms that go along with PCOS that I am trying to get under control. I ask to be put on metformin but she says that they on... Sat, 25 Apr 2009 00:52:04 EST Greetings from Colorado Hello everybody,

My name is Rebekah and I am from Yoder, Colorado, a city about 35 miles outside of Colorado Springs. I am 25 years old and have never had a regular period. Throughout puberty, my mom assured me that I was just getting regulated and nature would eventually take its course. During my junior year of high school I finally went to a gynecologist who then prescribed me birth control pills.

Needless to say, my body has never quite "straightened out." Finally, l... I am a 54 years young retired school teacher. I was diagnosed at the age 25 with PCOS. At the time, they did not know much about it and so not much was done except for BC pills. The effect of which quickly wore off until the only one left was DepoProvera (not to be touched with a one hundred foot pole)! It did help the PCOS but it also made my body believe that I was pregnant. You guessed it, weight gain!!!! In fact I gained back all of the 87 pounds... I read a post on another message board from a girl that when she finally had one she ended up being in the hospital due to pain and blood loss. I just joined the team today and I thought I would stop in and say hi.
I've been on Spark for about a week, but I don't have a whole lot of time online these days since I started back to school. I wrote an intro blog on my page that tells pretty much the whole story, or at least the salient points. I'm hoping I'll be able to check in on the boards and such at least once a week and, starting today, I'm going to try hard to do my daily tracking.
It's nice to meet you all! I remember thinking, wouldn't that be funny if I was pregnant at the same time my roommate just found out she was? But the test came back negative.
3 months went by, my clothes felt a lot tighter, I still haven't had a period and I was meaner than a mother bear. I've been taking met for approx 8 years now (I take 1000mg 2x per day), and just recently I've started showing some symptoms of type 2 diabetes. We live in Norfolk, VA with our two dogs and cat.

I was in the Navy, and was within their weight regulations when, within 3 months, I had gained 60 pounds. After two years of trying to convince the docs that I did not cause this gain by overeating, I was finally diagnosed with PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, for those who aren't familiar).

Anyway, that was in 2001, ... Mon, 11 Aug 2008 09:35:54 EST hello Hi, I just found this website today, even though I've been living with PCOS for about 9 years now. I was formally diagnosed at age 20 (I'm 29 right now), but I've known something was wrong since about age 11, when I had my first period. When I was first diagnosed, I was put on metformin, birth control and aldactone. These all seem to help tremendously at first, and I lost a huge amount of weight very quickly. As time has gone on though, I've put most of that weight back on, and I'm really sta... Sat, 9 Aug 2008 01:44:21 EST Hello there Hi I am a 31 yr old with no children. I have been trying for kids since I got married in 2005 and I started having all kinds of issues with my cycles and never being able to determine whether I ovulated. Within this last year, I started having swollen ankles, weird hair growth, acne like I was a teenager again. So my PCP thought it might be PCOS but since my blood work came back "normal" he dismissed it and referred me to an endocrinologist who explained that just because my blood work was "n... Up until the last three years I have never had trouble with my periods, acne, or loosing weight. My youngest son is 2 1/2 and I gained my standard unhealthy 70 lbs during my pregnancy. I wasn't happy about it, but I knew I would be able to drop the weight by working out and eating right.

Only-that didn't happen. I didn't worry to much about it until he turned 1. Fri, 18 Jul 2008 15:01:35 EST Thinning hair I have to say that although I should be more concerned with my cycle issues, nothing bothers me more than the thinning hair. I'm fortunate in that I don't have to deal with the excess body/facial hair that much, but in the beginning of 2008 I noticed when I parted my hair, the part was very wide. I looked at the back of my head with the mirror and was shocked to see a balding spot. I'm 24, and it has completely traumatized me to have to style my hair to cover it. And who knows when or if I'll... Thu, 17 Jul 2008 16:54:07 EST It wasn't meant to be and I'm okay with that... Well, today was the day I dreaded. I couldn't wait any longer to hear from the job, so I called them, and sure enough, I didn't get the job. But I'm doing good. It came down to a really close decision they said and we were both really qualified. They said they wished they had two jobs to give out. I think that since it took so long to get back to me that I kind of prepared myself that I hadn't gotten it and I'm not feeling the pain so much. I've accepted that the job just wasn't for me ... Tue, 15 Jul 2008 18:46:34 EST Ready for change Hi!

My name is Lexi and as soon as I joined SparkPeople I immediately wanted to find others with PCOS. Although I haven't received an official diagnosis (doctors jsay they think that's what I have and they've ruled out most other causes of my symptoms), I know that this illness is a part of my life. No one in my family really understands PCOS, no matter how many times I try to provide information to them. It's like when I bring it up they have this glazed over look on their faces. ... Mon, 14 Jul 2008 19:48:31 EST Do I have PCOS? I have been told by some of my friends that I might have PCOS. Wed, 9 Jul 2008 14:20:07 EST hello! Hi everyone,

I have been diagnosed with pcos, but apparently I only suffer from the biochemistry problem....meaning I have the hirsiut, weight, and missed periods but no cysts. My doctor was still unsure if she correctly diagnosed me and wanted to put me on a myriad of medicine, but I've decided to go on the "no pills" version. Now I am trying to lose weight to see if some of the symptoms subside.(it is so hard) Mon, 7 Jul 2008 23:44:55 EST Back Pains I found out i had pcos back in 2000 and i have hard periods at times but this time around i have not been able to move as much. I am in pain in my lower back and my hips. My pain runs from the back of my neck to my lower back but only on my left side causing a migraine. I understand that since i have a lazy right ovary. My doctor had told me that this would happen sporadically. Has anyone out their experienced this awful and frustrating pain? I tried tylenol and it works but not for too long. Mon, 7 Jul 2008 16:04:43 EST question about meds I was told in Feb. that I have PCOS and my doctor started me on Prometrium once a day for 10 days a month and had me to take it for 3 months and then come back for a follow up. I went back in June for my follow up and my doctor took me off of the prometrium and put me on birth control Zovia 1/35 because my testosterone is too high and he said until i get that under control i will not be able to lose the weight. Well I have never liked the idea of taking bc pills because of the health risk wi... Mon, 7 Jul 2008 01:10:32 EST The Fear Every since I was younger all I ever wanted to be was a mother. Now that I am battling this horrible disease I don't see that happening. I am also single. Basically, what the doctors are telling me is don't worry about conceiving now because you are not even in a relationship. At what point do I worry though????? I am so sad, frustrated and scared. Sun, 6 Jul 2008 13:05:34 EST birth control question I'm on birth control and i have a vacation coming up in which i would really love to be able to swim with my little sister i cant use a tampon so my question is Would it be ok for me to skip my "period pills" just for this month and then go back to my normal way of taking them or would that cause me problems? I've always had abnormally bad PMS and my periods themselves have usually been pretty rough, too, but it seems like it's just getting worse and worse, and I don't know if it's due to PCOS or if I am in fact hurtling toward menopause. I thought the whole monthly process was over with days ago & I'm on vacation & have been rendered pretty much useless by the same cramping and weakness that I just dealt with two weeks ago, and it's just so frustrating. Hey Everyone
I am starting Metformin again for the third time. When I was diagnosed back in 2003-04, My Dr., prescribed Metformin.. I tried it. It made me sick, I was nauseous every morning. The last straw is when I vomited all over myself on my way to work. I think I only took it for 2, maybe 3 weeks. Then I went back to my dr. (3 years later- I was in denial about his DREADFUL condition). He prescribed it to me again this time with a slow release. It didn't make me sick, but I stopped ...
