But does anyone have any suggestions for making those humid days a little less miserable? All I want to do is sit in the shade and guzzle ice water.
Wed, 3 Jul 2019 19:05:35 EST Starting over again . . . I used to "run". I was never great, never fast but I did it. Then I stopped. Now, 2 years and 20 lbs later I'm starting again. I have had some major changes in my life related to health and career but I can't put it off any longer. It's time to take action and be in charge of my health again.
Sounds great, convincing even huh? I know I need to do this but I still sabatoge myself all the time. Sun, 10 Apr 2016 22:49:57 EST Incline Verses Treadmill Speed Hi All - I am a newer runner (more of a jogger) and am currently running a pace of 4.1 at a 0% incline on my treadmill. I'd like to increase my speed. Am I better off slowly increasing my pace (4.2 for a week then up to 4.3 and so on) or am I better off increasing my incline (0.5% or 1% each week)? Also - is a weekly increase too quick (I run 3x's per week).

I appreciate any guidance - thank you! Tue, 23 Feb 2016 10:43:08 EST Running motivation Sunday was US Olympic Marathon Trials! Tue, 2 Feb 2016 15:21:00 EST Trying to Find My Inner-Runner Hello - I joined your team today! I am trying to get back on track with my running program and have been doing a 5K Runner Program app that I purchased and completed some time ago. But I got lazy, gained some weight back and am now trying to kick myself back into gear! I am currently on week 6 of the 8 week program. I also shocked myself by signing up for my first 5K which will be held on my 44th birthday this coming April. I'm hoping that will be a good motivator for me not to mention a... Mon, 1 Feb 2016 11:10:01 EST Yoga for runners So back in August I popped a hamstring - either the muscle or tendon, not sure which - and couldn't even walk for a day. I haven't really run since, thinking my running days are over 24 But I miss running, so I've invested in a DVD called "Yoga for Runners." Now, I don't do Yoga, in fact I'm one of those obnoxious types that makes a little fun of Yoga, so I guess the joke's on me! Anyway, I tried the "Yoga for Beginners" routine, or I should say I TRIED to try the routine last... Mon, 14 Dec 2015 09:35:34 EST What to eat pre-race? I am getting close to running my first 5K. Thu, 10 Sep 2015 21:30:54 EST Back to running again So earlier this year I trained for a half marathon; ended up with a foot injury and couldn't do the run. 39 But I'm not giving up, I'm starting to run again. Wed, 18 Mar 2015 12:04:51 EST Week 3 - 2015 Is anyone following this program this year? All the threads seem to be very old. I am on W3D1 and I am sore but I did 2.97 miles! Well I've decided to step up & try a half-marathon, signed up for training with a local runner's store that sponsors traing for this purpose. Yesterday I put in 6 miles - really proud of myself! But today I can barely walk. I feel alot of pain on the outside edge of my right foot, toward the heel but not on the heel. I iced & elevated my foot, wrapped it in tape & took lots of ibuprofen yesterday. Today I'm hobbling around with a cane and my foot in a wrap. Treating the injury is one th... Sun, 18 May 2014 16:37:19 EST Pacing yourself Okay, so I ran my first 5K in like a year & 1/2 last Saturday, didn't do too bad at around 41 minutes. I ended up walking about half of it, I think. I'm not really an outdoor runner, I usually run on a treadmill, and I think that's part of the problem - I really don't know how to pace myself outdoors. I think that when I'm running, that I'm running faster than the 5mph that I do on the treadmill, and then I kind of run out of steam and have to walk. I noticed a few others that kept a slow... If you're in the middle of a jog and you stop to stretch or say hello to someone or something, do you stop your timer and resume when you start again? Fri, 14 Mar 2014 16:32:57 EST What's a good follow-up? Once you've completed your 5k, how do you stay motivated? How much running you do weekly/daily? I don't want to push so hard that I start messing with my joints, but I want to keep improving myself. So what new goals do you set for yourself? Tue, 4 Mar 2014 20:26:21 EST Why I like this site. It is a total coincidence that I decided to track my overall progress today on SparkPeople and find this team! I am so excited for the opportunity! Mon, 19 Aug 2013 06:55:25 EST Pulled out of the 5k your way program but.... Don't worry I'll be back in, in a few weeks. The only couch to 5k program that works with my Ipod is a 9 week program that starts off slower. Since I really need those voice over cues as looking at a timer would drive me nuts and I don't want to skip I've decided Ill officially rejoin the program when the two are more in sync. Besides I really want that trophy.

Think I'll stick around the team though as it is 5k MY way. 20 Fri, 12 Jul 2013 12:27:17 EST Hi just starting runing again I just started today. I rested it for several months (probably longer than I needed to) and now I'd like to start jogging but starting slow of course. I have been jogging 1.8 miles around my neighborhood, but am looking to be able to go longer and farther. I'm shopping for new running shoes if anyone has any suggestions! I jog slowly (5 mph), did the C25K progam so I was taking it slow, have new supported running shoes (Brooks), have tried calf compressions, drink enough water, nutrition is very good... everything I can think of. Yet my shin is KILLING me. Last year I did the C25K program and got to the 5k mark... then had some physical/medical problems that needed attention and took time ... Wed, 17 Apr 2013 09:37:36 EST Query about week 4 I've just finished week3, so on to week 4 tomorrow, 35 minutes jogging.

I don't want to be pessimistic, but I've felt pretty pooped after the 8x4 minutes of jogging in week 3, you know what I mean, falling asleep in front of the Tv LOL.

My question is: if its too hard to accomplish the 35 mins straight, should I break the time into 2 sessions or 4 with some walking in between for a few minutes? Mon, 14 Jan 2013 08:16:59 EST Newbie Hello I'm 28, married with 2 kids, I'm a nurse and I am obese. I really want to become a proficient runner for the weight loss and health but even more for the personal time. That may sound silly but a lot of the runners I know feel like running really clears their heads and helps them manage stress. You could guess that I usually turn to food when stressed, its true. I was a smoker, sweets took the place of that. I have a few friends who have done the Color Run which looks soooooooo fun. Wed, 9 Jan 2013 23:49:46 EST Pay It Forward! Since Nov 2010, I've completed 31 5Ks & 2 Half Marathons. My wife & I've learned a lot about training and nutrition. We also learned a lot about preparing for and enjoying the race experience! I've been fortunate to join the American Running Company Team here in Dunedin, FL. I remember how intimidated I was when I ran my first race. I found out a lot of runners/walkers felt the same way! Now, it's like breathing. I will check this team daily to see if I can add helpful advice to questions ask... Fri, 21 Dec 2012 07:05:58 EST Sore knee from new shoes or pushing to hard? Hi, after finishing my 5k run last week I had a pain running along the inside of my knee. I didn't notice it when running, it was when I was done and tried to walk upstairs that I realized it hurt to bend my knee at 90 degree angle. Just wondering if this is because I switched running shoes and didn't break them in, or did I push myself too hard? I've been trying to get my 5k down to 30mins and have gone from 37 to 34 in a week. Also how long should I leave it before running again? I walked m... Sun, 9 Dec 2012 17:43:21 EST Why am I sore all the time ? I've been working out on my treadmill for a year and half. Wed, 5 Dec 2012 11:02:44 EST Where to from the 5K Since completing my 5 K, I have been adding some uphill training to strengthen my legs for running outdoors. I tried one outdoor run with a friend and it was so much harder than the treadmill! Since doing strength training for the uphills, we tried an outdoor run again and it went fantastically. I've had the shoe's for over 2 years, and decided to purchase a new pair. The gentlemen at Finish Line told me that my Nike Shocks can cause back pain. So he directed me to a pair of Brook's running shoe's. Now my question is How do I break them in ? I wore them yesterday on the treadmill. At first it was uncomfortable and I had a weird pain in my left foot ( I had the same pain when trying ... Mon, 26 Nov 2012 11:00:15 EST My 5th week!!! Since August I've lost 15 pounds. 15 more to go! Since I started losing weight about 3 years ago, I've lost about 50 pounds to this point. I saw this article titled "6 stretches that every runner should do"

_articles.asp?id=1565

I know that I have a few favorite stretches that I do every time(I love the calf stretch in this article), and I was wondering if other people change up their stretches or stick to a few favorites, which stretches work well for them, and if there is anyone who never stretches after they run. Sat, 17 Nov 2012 20:55:16 EST Shin Splints Again??? So I've bought a new pair of running shoes, added supportive insoles, stretched before and after a run as well as made sure I did a proper warm up but I'm still getting shin splints with every run. It doesn't seem to matter if I run for 5 minutes or 35, I keep getting them. Could it be simply that it's been almost 16 years since I've run and the muscles and ligaments are still just getting used to "getting going"? I used to be a sprinter so I'm used to doing short intervals with some pauses (like the prior weeks). I also have trouble pacing myself... so running for 35 minutes straight is making me nervous. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to keep pace a bit better or be able to run for longer amounts of time without getting win... I'm excited about what this means for my body, but pretty darn intimidated about all that running! On the one hand, I'm excited to have a (slightly) shorter run. On the other, I've been relying pretty hard on those walking intervals. I know I'm going to have to take my speed down (and therefore my distance) and that's kind of discouraging, but I'm hoping that I'll have built it up again by hypothetical race day.

As I get into straight running I'm ... Sat, 10 Sep 2011 02:29:50 EST Not a runner....yet ;-) I have played around at running some in the last year but only a day or 2 at a time. Today I did the first day of my training plan. Walk one minute, run 3 minutes, repeat 7 times. I just finished and it was not bad. I could do more but I always think that and things get hard and I quit. This time I am following the prescribed plan. Who knows at some point maybe I can run in a real 10K. It isn't a goal I have set but it does linger in the back of my mind always. Sat, 3 Sep 2011 10:44:14 EST Week 1, day 2, wow Wow, After walking for the last 5 years, and getting two new knees, I thought I was in shape. Walking is not a problem, but doing a walk 1 and jog 3 is really hard. Today I reversed it and did a walk 3 and jog 1, and did really well with this routine. I guess it takes time for the body to adjust to a new routine. I am doing it very slowly, and yes the doctor said I could start running again. Thu, 1 Sep 2011 11:31:51 EST Week 2 Day 1 distances?
