SparkPeople SparkPeople's 5K Your Way Rookie Running Program Team Messageboard Apps that you can customize for running program? Hello! I am new here and am thinking about trying out the program. I've used apps like C25K - that let you know when your to move onto your next interval - do any of you use an app that you customize it? I am not good at keep tracking of how long I've ran/walked and I don't want to stare at my phone the entire time :) Just curious how you know when you should run/walk (obviously not on a treadmill) Wed, 27 Dec 2017 12:32:40 EST Running Watch/Tracker Recommen dations? I'm considering getting a Garmin Forerunner 220. Has anyone used this running watch or have a favorite tracker? Wed, 17 Feb 2016 23:55:44 EST New to team Sorry...forgot to introduce myself. New to spark people and getting back to running. Loved it just got LAZY Mon, 8 Feb 2016 13:14:50 EST Starting Week 5 I am really looking forward to running a complete 5K ! The training plan encourages me to keep going because the progression is realistic. Goal is to strictly follow the plan - don't skip a day and don't overdo.
Thu, 14 Jan 2016 07:30:08 EST Week 1 Yesterday I finally started my program. I was able to do Week 1 Day 1. It felt really good to be back out jogging again even though the "jogging" part was quite small, lol. I'm really hoping this program will help me build back up reasonably without injuries or trouble with my asthma!

364 Here I come! Mon, 11 Jan 2016 13:56:18 EST Hi I am new here I am on week 4 of c25k getting harder but staying motivated. Signed up for a 5k in Dec really want to run the entire race but worried. Any ideas would be helpful especially in the cold in Wisconsin! Sat, 3 Oct 2015 01:13:01 EST Starting Week 7 Is anyone else around at this point? The most recent post that I saw was from May!

The 4 minutes felt hard at the start of the run, but it felt a lot better as I warmed up. It sure feels great to be at this stage! I had a week without running at about the week 4 mark, so I had to regroup and recover lost ground. Everything feels on track at this point - touch wood!

I'm looking ahead a bit at this stage, thinking of how to use this kind of training program to work up ... Tue, 22 Sep 2015 17:31:58 EST Sonya's week 5 I am listening to Zombies, Run! 5K app to help me along and it is nice listening to a story. I am being forced to set my pace which I think is helping me. Tue, 1 Sep 2015 13:19:43 EST Hi there!! I have struggled with 5k programs for years! But this time I am determined to complete it so I can compete with confidence in the Rugged Maniac next May. I won't be starting the program until Monday, 8/24, but I am preparing myself mentally. I have signed up for the virtual race on 10/25 to give myself plenty of time to complete the training.

Good luck to everyone and remember this is hard work, but it will feel so great when you get there! Thu, 20 Aug 2015 14:07:27 EST Starting Again I am starting week one again. I brought my work out clothes with me today. So no excuses. Wed, 19 Aug 2015 08:46:40 EST Transition from Treadmill to the Road Hi. Am I crazy to feel nervous about moving from the treadmill to running on the street? I think part of this is that I am worried that it will be harder to run outside vs. inside on the treadmill. Another part of me is insecure, I guess, and I worry about people looking at me running down the street - "wogging", as I like to call it - at a pretty slow pace with plenty of jiggles going on with my body! I guess I am looking for a confidence booster before I take it to the street. I've gotten ... Tue, 18 Aug 2015 00:56:41 EST Week 5 session 3 - pelvic rim pain After having done this program for 5 weeks I suddenly have this pain in my hip. When I came back from running yesterday I was a bit stiff, but I did my stretches and everything felt okay-ish again. Later on when I got up from my chair my hip hurt. I did have some manipulation a a week ago on my pelvis. The doc warned me that I might have some odd pains and aches. So I hope this isn't a big thing that keeps me from running in the future as my ankle did the last 6 times I tried (other program).... Mon, 3 Aug 2015 07:54:10 EST Starting tomorrow Hey all, gonna start tomorrow get off work at 1:00, so am gonna go to one of the parks we have in the town where I work!! am excited, just hope I do not get those dreaded shin splints, but I have read up about alot of stretches for them, So I am ready!!

Ok have a question, I live in GA, and 1:00 is pretty hot here, so I have an old Nordic Trac, so do you all think I should use the Nordic trac, or run outside?

i really want to run outside, maybe I will try it tomorrow an... Sun, 2 Aug 2015 10:46:06 EST Sonya's week 1 W1D1 complete - 7/30/15 Fri, 31 Jul 2015 09:16:11 EST Injury prevention? I'm on week three now and ever since the start have felt a little tender in the shins. Last night on my run I felt a sharp pain in my achilles, but it went away when I changed my stride. I would like to prevent injury, what thoughts do you have to do that? It has been awhile since I ran but I'm keen to keep it up. :) Thanks! Tue, 28 Jul 2015 10:30:03 EST Music, Apps, and Fitness Trackers for C25k (includ It has been a long time since I've done a Couch to 5K and I'm really excited and also really curious about some of the changes that have happened since I did one.

For instance, a long while back when I did one I was able to download music that would tell me when to run and walk per the training. I am absolutely loving the way this training is set up, and wondering if anyone knows of any apps where you can input your own run/walk time goals with music? Anyone have any thoughts? <B... Thu, 16 Jul 2015 17:30:25 EST week 1 day 2 Week one day 2 was more challenging for me..I think it might have been because the night before I walk 2.5 miles and had to climb an enormous hill my legs and butt where alittle fatigued. I'm thinking the jump to jogging 2 minutes in week two will be a challenge..but i think i will be up for it. Have to remind myself to not think to far ahead, be in the moment and do what you can where your at..We can do this! I can do this! Wed, 8 Jul 2015 10:02:06 EST Hello! Im on week1 day two and have never really ran before..So far i am enjoying this..Really excited to do this!
Tue, 7 Jul 2015 10:30:48 EST Week 3 Progress Day 1 not bad. Raising the time to 30 minutes wasn't a problem at all. Mon, 22 Jun 2015 21:02:26 EST Week 1 Day 1 I did my normal 3.7 mile daily walk but this time I ran every 5th minute of it. I didn't want to do just the 20 minutes. This is a hilly route, and I know I did a 5k in 34mins two years' ago. I didn't think I was worried about the speed - and I'm going to try not to be concerned about it! I want to have a happy heart, a happy head, happy muscles :) I am doing this for my health: body and mind.

But, I am considering doing more than 4mins running............. maybe 5mins to begin with? I als... Sun, 17 May 2015 05:24:54 EST What's everyone's pace this week? I'm just curious as to what everyone's average pace seems to be this week. I feel like I have been super slow for pretty much the whole program. The best time I've ever gotten was around a 20 min/mile. I'm averaging much slower than that though at 25 min/mile. My first 5k is next month, and I feel like I am still so slow! It's not a timed race, but I don't want to be the last one to finish. Is it normal to only be at 25 min/mile right now? I mean, this is with the walking intervals, but still... Sat, 16 May 2015 02:20:46 EST Elliptical or stationary bike in place of running? I wasn't able to do my run outside today. My husband normally watches my son before he goes into night shift, so that I can do my run. He was running late today, and wasn't able to, so I wasn't able to get my run in before he left. We don't have a jogging stroller just yet, so I couldn't take Griff along either. Now that he's finally asleep for the night, I wanted to make up my run. I have an elliptical/stationary bike cross trainer, so I can do either. I'm just not sure which one would be a ... This did have the effect of starting up my intestines, so I was able to go to the loo before I went out, and didn't have to deal with getting caught short!

I was out by 6.15am and I didn't see ANY other people jogging/running! I ran part of the ses... Sun, 10 May 2015 02:50:48 EST Gill's week 6 My plan is to do a modified Week 6 Day 1 by walking for 1.5mins and running for 3 mins. Reducing the rest time more gradually worked for me last time, so I'm going to do it again.

Went for a 2hr hike today - about 4.5miles, so not fast, but my legs sure are tired now! Sun, 3 May 2015 10:03:05 EST 5k blacklight run In April 5th I decided to make a change. So without any running history I signed up for a 5k run. Now I'm on week 4 and feeling great! I will run/jog the blacklight run on July 11th. Wish me luck! Mon, 27 Apr 2015 07:54:24 EST Toughest week yet This has been a though week. Mostly because I suffer from spring-time allergies and there is a lot of pollen floating around the Houston area. Nevertheless I finally made a day late but finished nonetheless. Sun, 26 Apr 2015 12:47:05 EST Asha's week 2
Day 1: Finally I made it to day 1 of week 2 yesterday. It was hard and I wanted to stop after 15 minutes, but I did not and completed the 25 minutes though the last round instead of 2 minute run, I just did it for 1 minute and walked the next 1 minute I just could not do it any longer felt like my legs were on fire. Sat, 25 Apr 2015 20:54:37 EST Gill's week 5 Well - today was supposed to be my Week 5 Day 1 (modified) but I woke up feeling grotty with a dizzy head......slight sinus thing I expect. So, am taking it easy (have to work this evening). But I did do a 10 min jump rope cardio video which got my leg muscles working!

Hope to be up to it tomorrow. Sat, 25 Apr 2015 07:29:34 EST Week 3 of 5K RRP Today I changed my route from an area that was mostly flat to a trail on a Nature Preserve. Boy did my pace time go off track! This was the slowest run to date. I will continue to use this route to challenge myself in preparation for the upcoming 5K race I have signed up for. The trail is mostly shaded and isn't crowded at all. It will be interesting to see how my times change as I get more familiar with the terrain. 521 104 Mon, 20 Apr 2015 19:29:19 EST Ramp up to Week2 is EXTREME.(100% increase) YIKES Yikes. I finished week 1 with no problem, and was THRILLED I could do it. And I had been singing the praises of this program, how it started out gently and ramped up gently. Gentle? Yikes, no. It's a 100% increase in running. DOUBLE. That's a VERY aggressive ramp up.

Oh well. Guess I'll just have to write my own plan instead. I'll shoot for 1.5 minutes this week.

I haven't yet read about other Sparker's experiences with week 2's sharp increase. I'll be doing that to se... Mon, 20 Apr 2015 08:43:45 EST Hi Hi all! I've never reay been into running, but something inside me what's to give it a try. Probably because I live in the Bufflao area and going stir crazy from all the snow we've had up until about month ago. I'm excited to start this progarm!

Shannon Wed, 15 Apr 2015 12:49:53 EST Gill's Week 4 I've done two Week 3 runs and have found them a bit too comfortable, so I'm moving on to Week 4, with modifications. So (W2,R2)x4 for my next run - this is focusing on reducing the recovery intervals before I start increasing the running intervals. I think this will work for me. My next run day will be Friday. Wed, 15 Apr 2015 02:34:46 EST just started so i have never run in my life and trying it out this week. I have completed two days (one day off one day on) at the beginners level. I already feel as if I have shin splints! Why have they developed so soon? After day 1 I went out and bought new running shoes, wore them around the house and then went on treadmill today - 4 mins walk 1 min jog and repeat 3 times as recommended. Any thoughts? Mon, 13 Apr 2015 20:36:40 EST Got a really bad stitch in my side while running Week 2 is going strong (I'm actually running week 3's workout. I made my run longer because was only taking me 22 minutes. I ended up running 30 minutes and that's actually week 3's workout.)

HOWEVER... Today while running I got a pretty bad stitch in my side. I pushed through it and didn't stop because I know these things happen and I wanted to finish what I started, but it was tough.

Nobody ever said it would be easy I guess...

I'm just wondering if this i... Mon, 13 Apr 2015 19:15:32 EST Gill's Week 3 Week 3 Day 1 - kept the run sections really slow, and managed it comfortably. Mon, 13 Apr 2015 02:57:48 EST is week two tough? I just finished week one and looked at week 2. It sounds like a big leap. Double the jogging, less recovery time and 5 more total minutes in time. For anyone who has done this, how did you find it? Was your body ready for this after week one? Sun, 12 Apr 2015 13:37:57 EST Asha's week 1
I joined this program quite some time back to be precise 3 months back though am not sure of that too. I'd start the program and get to day 2 or 3 and that is it and then start all over again. This time I am determined to finish the program. No giving up - so I am going to come back each day and talk about how I fared. I'll be doing day 1 later in the night, but I am in here so that I don't back out - cause I have been thinking each day, but not acting upon it, but I know if I mention a... Mon, 6 Apr 2015 10:05:27 EST Gill's Week 2 Week 2 Day 1

It's a day off from work, so I had a good sleep and no rushing round to do first thing. The day is grey and drizzly, windy and cold. But I went. I had some breakfast first, and a warm drink. I tried to use the interval timer on my work phone to give me bleeps when it was time to run or walk, but I kept pressing the wrong buttons, so it wasn't great. My first 'run' interval was longer than 2 mins because I'd accidentally turned the timer off! Anyway, I kept goi... Fri, 3 Apr 2015 05:53:19 EST Hello Hi, I'm Sarah. I have ran/walked a 5k, but that was 2 years ago, so I'm ready for another one. I also really want to work up to a half marathon. about 5 years ago, I was in great shape and running 7 miles a day. I love to run, but I'm out of shape, so I gotta start somewhere. I look forward to training for the 5k, and to getting to know everyone here. Tue, 31 Mar 2015 16:11:12 EST Gill's Week 1 9th March - Day 1 - went out in the drizzly rain and did about a mile in 24 mins. Felt good. I've had a rotten cold for the past week, so feeling good about feeling well enough to even attempt it.
248 Mon, 9 Mar 2015 06:23:24 EST Running Gear I'm getting ready to run my first 5K at the end of March and have been wondering how I should dress. The 5K is in NE Pennsylvania so the weather is very iffy at that time of year. I know when I run at the gym it doesn't take me very long to get hot so I don't want to overdress. Any favorite brands or style advice will be appreciated. Wed, 4 Mar 2015 21:43:57 EST Knee Pain So, after my run Tuesday my knees felt a little "wonky." Yesterday I did strength training and cardio kickboxing and when I did squats I could hardly support my weight back up. My knees were shaking.

Today my knee feels warm and very sore.

I was supposed to do week 2 day 2 today, but I'm concerned that with the knee pain I should slow down (maybe walk the whole time, or walk and speed walk). Does anyone have advice for knee pain? Thu, 26 Feb 2015 12:01:36 EST Race and insight I did my neighborhood (practice) race on Sunday and completed it in 38:38. SparkPeople converted that time into a 4.6 pace, which is faster than what I do when I use the treadmill. Which shows me it is better to practice (at least when possible) outdoors.

On the treadmill I walk with a 3.5 pace and jog with a 4.5 pace, so the average is something like 4.0 pace.

I guess if I practice on the treadmill I need to increase one or the other or both speeds to push myself to i... Tue, 24 Feb 2015 14:03:57 EST Speed How fast do you run/jog and how fast do you walk?

I'm starting week 2 today (I fell behind over the weekend, finished week 1 yesterday).
Yesterday I pushed too hard and ended up having an asthma attack alone in my apartment's gym. I nearly fell off the treadmill. I felt like I wasn't moving fast enough, but ended up setting myself back to walking half of the workout,
I tried to run 6 mph and walk 4 mph (Days 1 and 2 I was walking 3.5-3.6 mph and jogging at 4.7 mph). <... Tue, 24 Feb 2015 10:40:37 EST Stretching? I don't typically stretch (I know, shame on me). Starting this program, I recognize that I will need to incorporate stretching, but frankly have no clue where to start. I'm also concerned because for now I'll be running at the gym and I'm not comfortable stretching in the gym. So how long do I have post workout before my muscles are no longer "warm" and stretching would be ill advised?

Should I warm up and stretch at home, then go to the gym and run and cool down? Should I warm up... Mon, 16 Feb 2015 15:41:44 EST Back after being sick I've had a flu last week and haven't been following the program during the last week. I did my Week 4 day 1 run last Saturday and found it weird that I felt MISERABLE after instead of awesome like I usually do after a run. The next day the flu set in. Feeling better but feel like I should do week 3 over again before I attempt week 4 again. Just did a walk today to ease myself back in to it but plan on doing my walk/run tomorrow. What does everyone else think? 312 Mon, 9 Feb 2015 16:36:03 EST tired Yesterday I did day 1 of week 7 and though a challenge, I felt ok during the workout. I just feel a little worn down and slow.

It's been on an ongoing issue for a few weeks now. Is it normal?

Should I just sleep in the next day or go to bed earlier or eat more of something? Thu, 29 Jan 2015 14:02:10 EST End of week 2 Finished week 2 today. Feeling great. Found the 3rd run of week 2 a little harder than the 1st two....not sure why. Maybe just low energy today. Thu, 14 Aug 2014 10:04:49 EST alarmed at uncontrolled bladder during run Just finished my 1st week and have found that while running I am having bladder control issues. I expected this to happen when I get into my 70's not 40's. Anyone else having this same issue? Any advice? Sat, 9 Aug 2014 18:30:51 EST Just can't do 3 minutes I've done two training sessions for wk 4 and I just can't do 3 continuous minutes of jogging. I push myself pretty hard but the best I can do is 2.5 minutes. I thought I would do a week 3.5 where I run for 2.5 minutes and walk for 2.5 minutes before progressing further with the program. Any thoughts or suggestions? Thanks Wed, 6 Aug 2014 02:50:42 EST Finished! I am planning on starting Week 2 tomorrow evening, and feel great about sticking with just the first week of the program. My husband has been participating with me. Since I am crazy competitive, he is keeping me motivated through all of this. The first set is usually the hardest, but toward the end, it feels much better. Sun, 27 Jul 2014 18:59:40 EST Never been a runner. I have a very bad habit of starting things, and not finishing them, so I wanted to wait until I had completed week one before introducing myself. Well, success! I am very excited about beginning week 2 tomorrow evening (thunderstorms are preventing me from doing so right now).

I've never been a runner, or an athlete of any sort. The most physical activity I usually get involves walking five miles per shift at my retail job (thank you, activity trackers!). I've been trying new thin... Sun, 27 Jul 2014 18:56:46 EST Chubby Runner Just Starting! Hi Everyone!

Story in brief: I used to be an athlete that loved running. Enter Depression. Now I'm getting better. I've already lost some weight, but I want to kick my exercise up a notch.

So HI everyone! You'll see a lot more of me for the next 8 weeks! Fri, 25 Jul 2014 12:51:29 EST End of Week 2 Today was not that great... I should have ended week 2 yesterday, but I felt tried and not motivated to go and run. I figured I would feel better today. Well I didn't! I woke up later than I wanted. Ate breakfast. Put sunblock on. Did some house work and headed out for the end of week 2. I guess I waited too long since by the time I was ready it was 80 degrees with 63% humidity. Boy did my body know it! My legs felt like jelly. It was so hard to move it felt like my joints were rusted at each... Mon, 21 Jul 2014 16:08:44 EST Some Setbacks So, I've had a yo-yo of a start, following the program rather closely, but at first incorporating it into my longer hour-long walks. I also played with the speed, starting with walking at 3mph and running at 4mph, and later having to slow down to 2.5mph walks and 3-3.5mph jogs, and the last week or so I got back up to 2.5mph walks but an astonishing 5mph runs after I got new shoes. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to keep that up as my shins really started to hurt. How can I tell if I got shin sp... Fri, 18 Jul 2014 19:44:02 EST Week 1 Done BUT..... I feel like I need to do it again.
I started out on the treadmill because I really didn't have a feasible way to know when to switch from walking to running without the timer on it. Now I have downloaded an intervals playlist and have taken my training outside and WOW there is a HUGE difference between running on the treadmill and running on the road!

Has anyone redone week 1 before going onto week 2?
Do you think it is necessary to repeat because of the surface change or... Thu, 17 Jul 2014 06:55:12 EST New Here! Hi everyone!! Just wanted to introduce myself. I'm Jess and am excited to train for my first 5k! I am overweight (spark people says by 30lbs... whoa. If I lost 15 I'd be happy) and a mommy of 3 boys under the age of 5. I have decided to get into shape and have signed up for the color run that will be in my city in October!

I am excited to get healthy and strong!! Mon, 14 Jul 2014 15:40:43 EST Hello Everyone! I've been on SparkPeople on and off for the last three years and have loved it when I used it. I had some awesome success with it in the summer of 2011 and lost 20 pounds in a few months, but due to a lot of stress in 2012 and a family tragedy this January I resorted to over eating as stress relief. The WRONG thing to do! But, I am getting back on track and and hoping to get it back off in the next few months! I'm excited about it and am also thrilled to be training for a 5K! You'll be s... Mon, 14 Jul 2014 10:27:34 EST Week 3 Just finished the first day of week three. Added two extra days of week two to our routine because a few members of the shift were off. We've got an extra three weeks between the end of the program and our 5K so we might add a fourth day to each week which works better with our 24 on 48 off schedule.

Somehow my jog logger messed up the 4th interval and we ran for four minutes instead of two, but we made it. Fri, 6 Jun 2014 17:13:34 EST 5K on Saturday, any hints? Not quite sure how my warm-up and stretching will fit into the race day schedule.
Normally I walk for about five minutes, stretch and then walk for another 3-5 minutes before I start the intervals.
Any other hints for a 1st race? Thu, 5 Jun 2014 22:59:31 EST How to prevent knee pain Any tips on preventing knee pain? I do tons of walking and have completed a spin class this year with no issues. Now that I've started running, I'm experiencing soreness. I've had my knees checked before and there doesn't appear to be a problem. Am I doing something wrong? Or is there a stretch or cross train exercise anyone could recommend? Thu, 29 May 2014 11:47:18 EST w1 day1 I did it! The first run minute I thought I was gonna fall over. I SO didn't stretch well enough. But I made it! I'm proud of myself! Wed, 21 May 2014 23:47:51 EST Started week 8 I started week 8 today. Had a good run today. 30 Just a few seconds extra walking 311 on 2 or 3 of the intervals. Managed 3.7 miles in the 40 minutes. My 5k time was about 33.5 min. Not as good as I had hoped, but not as hard as I expected. All in all a good day. 41 Tue, 20 May 2014 16:46:34 EST Finished Week 5 on a high note On my second jogging interval, I reached the 3 minute mark and had hit a a really good groove so I just kept jogging for another 10 minutes!! I went about a mile in the 13 minutes. Had you told me two months ago I would be able to do that I would have though you were pulling my leg. 104 On to Week 6! But running a 5k is on my bucket list of things to do and now that I graduated from nursing school yesterday my goal is to start working on my 5k. I have done one 5k last fall but I alternated between walking and jogging and I want to run the entire 5k and I am going to achieve that goal before the end o... Sun, 11 May 2014 22:45:52 EST I did it!! I just finished week 7 day 3. I felt really strong today and completed the 5k in 39 minutes. Now, I am talking treadmill talk, maybe I can retrain myself for outside jogging. But it felt great being able to run without stopping for a walking break. Their were weeks I thought I wouldn't be able to do it, but if I had to repeat a week just to make myself stronger, so be it.

248

Now lets see what I can do next week for my last week in training???? I wonder i... Fri, 9 May 2014 15:40:18 EST Started week 7 Did week 7 day 1 today. It was a lot harder than I expected. Had to walk more in the 6th interval than planned, but I still made it. Fri, 2 May 2014 10:53:54 EST Bursitis! For Week 3, my family traveled for Spring Break. I still completed all 3 days but on greenways of a town in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. (I was used to hills but these were a lot more strenuous.) On W4D1 my knee started hurting. I finished not only the four intervals but also the 5K. (I do the intervals then walk the rest of the route.) I used ice and Motrin but going down stairs could nearly bring me to tears. Next morning, it was worse. So I went to the doctor and he diagn... Sun, 27 Apr 2014 11:56:23 EST Weather is keeping me from running... what now? So it's raining this morning so I can't go for my run. I don't have a tredmill and the local gym doesn't open till May so I have no way of running. What should I do? should I try to knock my schedule off a day and do it tomorrow instead of my strength training? Should I think about starting this week over? Advice? Sat, 26 Apr 2014 09:29:38 EST 3rd week Boy, run was tough yesterday. I had to stop in my 5th interval for 20 seconds and in my 6th...hoping tomorrow will be easier! I think I need to drink more water! Fri, 25 Apr 2014 09:55:20 EST Hello from NZ! Hi guys - my name is Lisa and I used to run when I was a bit younger but I got terribly lazy and slowed down A LOT!!! As usual, my lungs handled the extra running with no issues but my legs were screaming at me the whole time. I also developed some foot pain after this running session that is still with me a day later.

My sock was bunched up a little in the bottom of my shoe and I think that may have something to do with it. I am just getting started. Mon, 14 Apr 2014 13:21:18 EST Started week 6 I started week 6 today. Was trying to do a modified version 3.5 to 1.5 with an interval timer I downloaded for my surface, everything was going fine until I got a phone call I HAD to take at about the halfway point, forgot to pause timer. 198 I had to figure out where I was and continue on from there using the clock on the elliptical. I. probably didn't get in the full 24 minutes running but still came close. Listened to Michael W Smith - good for pacing. Mon, 14 Apr 2014 09:25:29 EST Started week 5 I did week 5 day 1 today. I kinda lost track of time on the last interval and walked an extra minute, but still managed to do 2.7 miles for the 30 minutes. So I will call it complete. Mon, 7 Apr 2014 11:26:15 EST Trying to stay positive I've been walking for a long time. I wanted to try running, so I thought I would do this program to give me more motivation. Well, I threw out my knee yesterday, on day 1 of week 2. I was reading, and EVERYTHING on Sparkpeople says don't do too much too soon. How is jumping from 1 minute of running to 2 minutes AND shortening the walking time NOT too much too soon? I just find it frustrating that it couldn't be something a little gentler. Week one, 4 minutes walk, 1 run. Week 2, 3 minutes wal... Tue, 1 Apr 2014 10:42:29 EST Began week 4 Started week 4 today. Felt a little funny during the run so I slowed down a bit, but was able to complete it without too much trouble. There were 3 people sick yesterday at church- hope I'm not coming down with what they had. Mon, 31 Mar 2014 23:43:40 EST can't wait I am so excited about the rookie running plan. I used to run way way back in High School and now 29 years later I would love to start again. My 12 year old daughter wants to run in several local 5 k's and this gave me a reason to put back on the running shoes. Sat, 29 Mar 2014 12:57:28 EST just graduated myself to week 3 So I spent about 5 workouts and 2 1/2 real weeks on week two and finally nailed it, no gasping for breath or feeling like I needed to shave seconds off the runs. It took some time because I am enjoying a Lot of cross training. I think I will be ok for one more interval. I just am not ready for longer jogs but the week three workout sounds doable. Wed, 26 Mar 2014 22:18:30 EST DONE! Went from the first day not being able to jog for the full minute to completing walk 3 exactly as stated! YEAH Fri, 21 Mar 2014 09:22:05 EST Seriously slow, Day one down Did my work out today. I tried 3 separate times to do the walk 4/run 1 but that didn't work out so I wound up just walking 20 mins 3 separate times for a total of 3 miles. Also found out it is hard to run with the jogging stroller I picked up from the goodwill. Shakes to much. OH well, at least I did a day of it which is more than yesterday. Thu, 20 Mar 2014 00:35:14 EST Best running music? I'm in need of some new running music? Anyone have any good suggestions? What about places to find playlists? I am brand new to this team and to running. I am doing a 5k zombie run with my 14 year old in September and thought this would be a great way to begin my training. 312 Tue, 11 Mar 2014 19:01:52 EST Week 3! Made it! This is the longest that I have stuck with a running plan! Of course it has taken me a few more than 3 weeks to get here, but that is mixed in with volleyball and zumba workouts for me.

Starting week 3 tonight! 386 321 Tue, 4 Mar 2014 14:08:49 EST Running Group Hello Everyone,

I am new to this forum. I plan on starting a running group once the weather starts getting warmer. I am looking for advice or tips on warm-ups and cool-downs before and after our runs. I am currently running on the treadmill because it is just too cold for me to run outside. Mon, 3 Mar 2014 10:30:34 EST Love this program! This is a fantastic training program. I'm 59, have never been a runner and didn't know if I could do this but decided to try. Thursday, I ran 5.2 K in the 40 minutes of intervals and plan to do it again today. Am not signing up for a "real" race yet because I still look and sound like I'm going to need oxygen and CPR any moment as I run, but I'm doing it! Plan to go to the next level of training next week. Sat, 1 Mar 2014 07:13:36 EST Starting Week 2! Did Week 2 day 1 today. The second interval was rough but I stuck with it. Got almost 2 miles in during the work out today. 30 Mon, 24 Feb 2014 13:17:11 EST Week 1 done Completed week one today. 244
I am just not sure that I will do week two next week. I will just repeat week 1 as I am not comfortable moving on.
521
Fri, 21 Feb 2014 21:34:02 EST Starting Over Yet Again Hi,

I am starting the Spark 5k running program again. Not upset about it though. For five weeks I was following's Couch to 5k App and I got to week 4 and thought I would die. My knees and gait just struggled through it, and I feel this program will work a bit better for me as I have 100+ lbs to lose. I made it through 3 minutes without feeling death come over me so I feel that if I stay going and try this program I will be successful! Sun, 16 Feb 2014 16:34:02 EST Started Week 1 today I got out early this morning in spite of the cold and overcast skies. I did W1D1 of the program and added enough additional walking to total 3.5 miles. I feel really good about myself and like this program better than the Couch-to-5K. Tomorrow I will do another activity and then W1D2 on Tuesday. I am very proud of myself for challenging myself!
104 Sun, 9 Feb 2014 14:44:23 EST Warm-up and Cool down I'm hoping to compete in my first 5k "fun run" in just less than a month.

To date I've only run on a treadmill.

What would be considered appropriate warm-up and cool down routines?

Any other recommendations on making the transition / preparing?

Thanks! I workout on a treadmill. I start with the warm-up for a slow walk at 3.2 then the workout walk at 3.7 and then for my minute of running I jog at 5.7 (mph). I check my heart rate after the run and it is around 178, my max heart rate. I am 42. during the walk part it goes back down around 125. Is that safe? When I am doing the run it doesn't feel like I am doing anything more than a jog, but wit... I finished week one with no issues; of course the first day was difficult, but by the end of my last training day that week I was ready to move up. I've really enjoyed this training plan thus far; I think I was pushing myself too much when i started running without a plan, so having this structure has helped so much. Before I'd warm up, then run for 1/4 of a mile or so, then walk forever because my ankles were extremely sore and I was so out of breath. I wasn't letting myself wean into running obviously.

Can't wait to start week two!!! Fri, 1 Nov 2013 10:50:08 EST Starting week 4 I'm on week 4! 244 My running is great but it is getting better. The other night I put my 3 year old in the stroller and did some training. I was pleasantly surprised that the running wasn't as hard as I thought it would be. It was hard....just thought it'd be a lot harder. Looks like I'm making progress! 244 Wed, 30 Oct 2013 06:32:24 EST ? Re: Tracking I downloaded a podcast from iTunes to my little IPod shuffle. Their program is a 5 minute warm up walk, a 1 minute run and a 90 second recovery walk....all repeated 8 times. This is twice the amount/distance that the tracked 5K training on this Rookie Running Program. How do I track that? If I can only get credit for tracking through the training schedule it isn't right. Fri, 25 Oct 2013 13:00:06 EST Not doing so great, but not giving up! I'm having a hard time with my 5k plan. I'm not giving up though. Right now I'm just continuing to do the walk/jog thing ~~ I walk for a few minutes and then jog for as long as I can. Sometimes I can only jog a few seconds and other times I can make it a few minutes. I'll keep at it! 521 Thu, 24 Oct 2013 06:04:14 EST Repeating Week 6 Thanks for the advice. I will be repeating week six.

Recently starting seeing a chiropractor who said take a break from jogging. I will go easy on myself because I want my spine fixed.

Just don't want to lose momentum and all the progress I've made thus far. Tue, 22 Oct 2013 19:13:30 EST Thinking about repeating week 6 I did four days and it wasn't terrible. Legs tired and challenged breathing. The three minute run just wasn't easy and I don't think I can go to four yet.

What do you guys think repeat or on to week ? 198 Sun, 20 Oct 2013 15:10:56 EST week 6 struggles I have been struggling with week 6 for 4 weeks now. I finally conquered it today but going to stay with it a few more days before moving on to week 7. Sat, 19 Oct 2013 10:47:01 EST Week 7 Whew. Completed the first day of week 7 and it kicked my bum. I am so proud of myself though: I thought I was completely worn out 25 minutes in and was going to stop, but I pushed myself to 30. Then I walked to cool down and decided to try to run as long as I could - I ended up completing the whole set of 8 intervals! Feeling great! Wed, 16 Oct 2013 12:55:10 EST Started Week 3 - WOOHOO! I DID IT! 524 Hello Week 3 people! 524

I am now one of you! Me! The Chubby Fencer that didn't think she could run!

I can't believe I'm here and staying strong! Today was my first day on Week 3 and I did it! I did it and it was not as hard as starting Week 2...likely because we just add one more interval this week. I have been improving my speed gradually - I run on a loop and have been noticing myself be carried farther each time I run.

I can't wa... Mon, 14 Oct 2013 17:28:50 EST Frustrated I have been working on this training plan for almost 3 months and been on Week 5 for 4 weeks. Still can't get through 5 intervals. Changed up my route today to eliminate the hills hoping it would make a difference but no such luck. Just keep telling myself to keep trying. At least I'm off the couch :-) 521 Sun, 13 Oct 2013 11:10:28 EST First Day of Week 2 - HARD! But I did it! I just did the first day of Week 2 and I AM SO PROUD OF MYSELF.

Do you see the weight on my ticker? Running at that weight is no joke and I am SO pleased that I was able to push through the difficulty and get all the intervals in. I was very afraid I wouldn't be able to do it at all.

I also have another future-runner with me - my sister in law. My sis and I started the 5k challenge together. Finished day two of week one and feeling pumped! Our final goal is to run a 10k together in May! I know we can do it! This site is so great! Thank you!! Mon, 7 Oct 2013 07:45:10 EST How to log run/walks in SP tracker? Hi all,

How do you log your run/walks in the activity tracker. I jog slowly 4.6 mph) and don't see that as a jog option so I'm curious what others are doing....

Thanks! Sun, 6 Oct 2013 09:57:34 EST Week 7 done! Finished today. it was a rough one because of my run yesterday. I usually don't do 2 days straight but scheduling this week didn't work. Yesterday I went to a trail to run. It was my own warrior dash. trees were down everywhere and I had to climb over. My legs were dead today and I know why, but I got it done. Fri, 4 Oct 2013 10:30:33 EST A little too easy? Week 5 day one went super smooth on the treadmill! Adding an extra interval onto week 4 was like nothing. I even jogged 4 minutes straight for most intervals. I need to decide if I should skip to week 6 or up my speed. Tue, 1 Oct 2013 16:28:23 EST oops! Did week 3 instead of wk 4 but at least got it in 334 Mon, 30 Sep 2013 08:02:59 EST Finished Week 3 :) Week 3 went pretty well. At times the two minute jog was tough, but feel like a maybe hitting some sort of awkward stride. I" super proud that I made it this far. I now have a new pair of running shorts and a gymboss. The Gymboss has made a huge difference and I recommend it.

Starting probably Tuesday little apprehensive about three minutes of jogging But I know I will give it my best.
Sun, 29 Sep 2013 21:54:27 EST Signed up for 1st 5K Starting week 7 tomorrow. Yesterday I hit the bike trail for week 6 day 3 and there was a sign at the head of the trail for a 5K on Oct. 19th. That's a week after I finish this program. I came home and signed up right away. It's only about 20 minutes from my home and the proceeds go to help mammogram and breast cancer programs in my county. I am really excited and nervous at the same time. I signed up to have my race timed. I didn't know you could do timed or untimed, why do it if you don't k... Sun, 29 Sep 2013 11:16:21 EST Wow...done with this week. I had so much stuff come up this week I was beginning to think I'd never get week 6 done, but I finished this afternoon after work. It was much easier than I thought. I think I'm finally figuring out my breathing. Ready for week 7! Sat, 28 Sep 2013 15:21:11 EST Starting Week three Ok week two had some bumps but I'm moving on to three.

I have been using the gymboss app and it works ok. If I make it through another week I may reward myself with the real thing.

Any suggestions on great, reasonably price timers? Mon, 23 Sep 2013 15:20:42 EST Week 2 I did Monday and today's week 2 walk/run and just got done doing an extra 10 more minutes. 104 Wed, 18 Sep 2013 14:46:37 EST Starting week 1 I'm new to spark and joined a couple groups last night and came across this...sounded interesting as I would soooo love to be one of those people I see jogging down the here goes the start of week 1 Tue, 17 Sep 2013 00:21:26 EST into my 2nd week Just finished my 1st and did my first day for this week. I'm determined to perhaps workout a little harder for the remainder of this weeks 5k rookie program 41 Mon, 16 Sep 2013 09:18:08 EST Day 1 Week 6 was exhilarating I have been doing week 5 for about 3 weeks so decided it was time to move on to week 6 today but it is raining and supposed to all day. Tried to sneak it in between significant rainfalls. In summary, I managed to finish 4 reps before I had to sneak in 2 minute walks (about 2 more than I expected), did a 5k distance, beat my personal goal, and running in the rain was so exhilarating and relaxing Sun, 15 Sep 2013 10:59:29 EST Tracking Problems? I just finished W5 D1 and all is going good except my tracker. When I go into the program and click track now it won't work. It has done this the last couple times I've tried. All that comes up is "can't find this goal". So I am tracking it manually but it isn't showing up on my program tracker. Has this happened to anyone else? Tue, 10 Sep 2013 14:04:51 EST Week 4 Let's Go! Did week 4 day 1 this morning. I did have a harder time, but I did it. It was not impossible and even though I felt like it at one point I did not die! I can do this and I feel proud of myself for pushing thru. Mon, 9 Sep 2013 13:53:30 EST Hi all... I'm down 12ish lbs and so excited..... I've really had a rough few days... would love to hear how you pick yourself back up and keep going :-) Mon, 9 Sep 2013 10:55:39 EST anyone starting Week 1 Day 1 today? I did my week 1 day 1 program today and it felt good. 30 Mon, 9 Sep 2013 07:09:01 EST Hi all... I'm down 12ish lbs and so excited..... I've really had a rough few days... would love to hear how you pick yourself back up and keep going :-) Mon, 9 Sep 2013 01:29:00 EST Running with Children - Joggin Stroller I just joined this 5k program today and am actually going to start the program tomorrow with my DH (hopefully!!!!!!) We have a 15 month old daughter and a jogging stroller that I purchased at the beginning of the summer with hopes of using it for running (so far we've taken a few power walks with it 2-5 miles) daughter gets extremely bored and crabby when we go for a longer walk and now that i'm starting this hopefully run. Any tips to keep them occupied? Sat, 7 Sep 2013 12:02:14 EST I finished the plan this past week I can't believe I actually completed it! I ran my first 5k this past weekend! WITHOUT WALKING A SINGLE STEP! (true I thought I may die... but I did it!) What an A.M.A.Z.I.N.G. feeling! I walk now with my head a little higher and some pep in my step!!! 104 Feeling like a champ! Tue, 3 Sep 2013 22:15:47 EST Shin splints and pain while running I have a question for all of you. I am in Week 2, just finished Day 2. And I have the worst pain in my shins when I am running. I know this is caused by my weight, but how do I get it to stop? (Other than stop running :-)) I am enjoying this program, but it is literally killing me when I am doing it. Thanks for your help.

Paul Tue, 3 Sep 2013 15:03:05 EST Whats up with that? I can't say any of this has been easy, but it's do-able. Today I had to put off my "wog" until afternoon, and it killed me. I felt like I was sprinting and just barely covered my 2 miles. Does the time of day make a difference for anyone else or is this all in my head. It's even a nice 74 degrees with a breeze today not the high 80's I've been doing this in.

Tue, 3 Sep 2013 14:37:34 EST After the race?? What type of workouts should I be doing the day after the race? I had my rest day the day before the race so I do not want to take another one- is it ok to workout the day after? Maybe I won't feel like doing anything, but I hope not. Sun, 1 Sep 2013 23:17:08 EST Ran first race! Ran my first 5K today. Almost didn't go, nerves were getting the best of me. I do not know why I had no expectations except trying to meet 2 goals: finishing and running the whole way. I met my goals and finished 3rd in my age group (there were only 4 in my age group :) but I will take it!). I am so glad I did not back out. I didn't have a clue what I should be doing but the race staff was so nice. My hubby and son were very supportive and came to cheer me on. Already have another 5K picked o... Sun, 1 Sep 2013 22:50:06 EST Week 1 Day 2 I completed day two last night and felt pretty good. MUCH better than day 1. I decided to slow down my walking speed a touch (I use the treadmill) from 3.5 to 3.2 mph. That little adjustment made it SO much better. I recovered a lot easier in between the runs and was able to keep the run at 5mph and didn't feel like I was going to collapse at the end. I'm feeling way more encouraged today than I was after day 1. Thu, 29 Aug 2013 12:03:31 EST Best way to time yourself Hi I haven't officially started but am ready to jump / jog in.
How do you time yourself for the walk 4 run 1 ? I will be outside and I don't have a special watch or anything. Thu, 29 Aug 2013 11:50:14 EST Week 1 I just completed my week 1. I am still having some trouble breathing at the end of the 1 min jog. (I have asthma but it is under control...exercising help tremendously.) SO...I think I am going to stay at this point another week. Tue, 27 Aug 2013 09:43:06 EST Week one in August Anyone on a new track here or am I once again in last? LOL Will be re-starting this again today,. I found gymboss on my app phone so very excited. I have macular degeneration so it makes it hard to constantly look at my watch when I am trying to watch for curbs and trees and snakes. I wear ear buds as I'm 80% deaf and the silence is ugh! LOL I must be a sight, a blind/deaf chunky lady sweating down the road.

Blind Batty's at it again!!!! Goal: to finish. Begin obsession. Mon, 26 Aug 2013 09:56:47 EST Week 2 Day 1....easier than I thought I was very worried about upping the jogging 1 min. and adding on another 5 min, but I got up early to beat the heat and it went really well. I am really excited to keep going. I know that means I'm getting in better shape every day. Mon, 26 Aug 2013 09:36:05 EST week 5 again I did 2 weeks of week 4 and just finished week 5. Today was the first day I got 3 full reps in before I had to walk more and run less. Going to stick with week 5 another week or two. I just keep telling myself it doesn't matter how long it takes as long as I am trying. Not easy for someone who has little patience :-) Sun, 25 Aug 2013 12:05:41 EST Week 1...done!! I have finished week one. This is the most consistent exercise I have done in 4 years. AND today I did 1.5 miles in the 20 minutes. I did one 14 minute mile!
It still feels like running a 5k is not super possible and I'm nervous about trying to run 2 minutes straight next week, but right now, I'm going to be proud of myself for THIS WEEK.
248 Sat, 24 Aug 2013 12:05:39 EST 10 days away-- guidance needed I am currently 10 days away from my first 5k. Never in a million years did I think I would be running a 5k or even a mile for a matter of fact. The purpose of this post is to ask for help/guidance. I've been constantly googling and researching what to do the day of the race. What to do before a race as far as warm up, eating, calming nerves, etc.. However, what are some of your tips? I am SOOOOOOOOOOOOO nervous about the race in general and not beating the goal I set for myself (under 40 minu... Fri, 23 Aug 2013 12:35:53 EST Wk1 day2 ...can it be true?? I finished day 2 of training today. I'm not sure if this is possible or. If it's in my head, but I think I'm already seeing and feeling some differences in my body!
Has anyone else noticed differences after only 2 sessions? Thu, 22 Aug 2013 00:30:04 EST DOUBLE the jogging time ALREADY?! I finished week 1 today and will start week 2 on Friday.

How am I supposed to run TWICE as long right away? It is not as though doing a minute at once suddenly became a piece of cake after three sessions. I think I prefer the C25K program where I remember there being 30-second increments... I am afraid of dying from the pain! Wed, 21 Aug 2013 23:32:31 EST week 2 day 2 Today was day 2 of week 2 and boy was it hard. I was glad my daughter was here to make me do it or I might have given up. I did it slower than the first day. I think I jogged just as fast but my walking was slower. I will try to pick it up on day 3 Wed, 21 Aug 2013 13:56:57 EST whew I don't know why day 1 of week 7 seemed so much more difficult to me but it kicked my butt this morning!!! Keeping my eye on the prize and remembering why I started all this... 104 Tue, 20 Aug 2013 01:37:51 EST Treadmill speed Just wondering if there is an average speed one should set the treadmill to for a jog. I've been setting it at 4.5mph to do my "runs" and i just have no idea if that's too fast or slow. My walk is set to between 3.0-3.5 (once i do a warm up going from 2-3+). Thanks! Wed, 14 Aug 2013 12:48:51 EST Week 3 Day 2 ... Week 4 just around the corner think I am going to not be running 5.0 of going at a slower rate when get there. It's okay with Week 3 but it's struggle with the lungs that holding me back. Is there anything can do to improve my breathing? Thanks in advance!

BTW, I am repeating Week 3. Wed, 7 Aug 2013 23:40:26 EST Tracking minutes Hi, I just joined this team (and just joined sparkpeople a few days ago, so a novice all around) and am really excited to give running a try! Quick question though, how do you track the exercise on sparkpeople? Week one is mostly walking, does that still count as exercise?
Thanks so much!! Mon, 29 Jul 2013 13:06:38 EST Wk 4 D1 I was considering repeating week 3 or doing a week with 2.5 jogging/2.5 walking but decided I would try it as is and then decide. I am happy I did that- the last interval was tough but I completed them all. So glad I tried! Mon, 29 Jul 2013 12:27:37 EST Repeating Week 2 OK! So, I actually did fairly well when I started this program. And then I injured my knee. Bah. So, I took last week off (just walked), and I am trying again with week 2. I AM EXCITED! I got my boyfriend interested, so he had been going with me, which helps immensely with the motivation. He is counting on me to go, so I don't think of excuses to blow it off.

Have a great day, everyone. Make good choices! Mon, 29 Jul 2013 09:53:25 EST never moved my feet fast even to run! I am 36 years old, mother of 2 kiddies and always on again off again with my weight. I've wanted to run a 5k since all of my friends signed up for them years ago. Finally I"m making changes and I'm doing it!!

I hope it works! Wed, 24 Jul 2013 20:56:00 EST Week 1 Day 1.....and I didn't pass out Seriously, I thought I was going to pass out if I ever moved my feet quicker than a walk. A neighbor just posted on FB that she was starting the couch to 5k so I decided that I had to do it too!!!

Well, I did it today and I feel great! I am so proud of myself, I can't believe I did it! Wed, 24 Jul 2013 20:54:17 EST Roadside Running Hello all,

Does anyone have any tips for roadside running? I live in the middle of nowhere surrounded by farm country, and there aren't many level running surfaces with shade (I burn if I walk under a 60 watt bulb, so I try to avoid lots of sun exposure, even with sunscreen). I also can't afford a gym, so I tend to run on back roads with little to no shoulder. Becuase of that, my right leg/knee/ankle tends to get injured more than my left, since the road slopes and I don't want to ... Mon, 22 Jul 2013 18:04:21 EST Looking for a workout buddy Is there anyone in Coffeyville, KS that may be looking for a workout/jogging buddy? If so, please let me know. I'm in Colorado right now visiting my brother, but will be back home on Aug 10. 41 Sun, 21 Jul 2013 15:26:25 EST dragonflysam As a new spark member I am looking forward to dropping 50 pounds with the Oregon team support.I am fortunate to live in the beautiful Rogue Valley and spend many weekends in Brookings. Both of these areas allow for great outdoors exercising opportunities. Now I just need the motivation to keep going. I would like to loose about 10 pounds before thecstart of the new school year so I am more energized for my 5th graders. Tue, 16 Jul 2013 11:38:47 EST 30 minutes plus? Im repeating week three. Im not quite ready for 4 . Today when I did day1 of week three my total workout time was 37 minutes. I do a 5 minutes warm up then add extra 2 minutes to the cool down. Does anyone else extend the workout ? Should I maybe stick to it or should I try and move on to week 4? Sun, 14 Jul 2013 22:45:17 EST Running like a kid. I find keeping time while I walk/jog (wog) difficult, so I look at the sign posts on the trail. There are markers every quarter mile. I warm up with a 0.5 walk, then run 0.5 then walk 0.25 and repeat until it is about half an hour. I do the strength routine I found here and stretch.

It is fun. Running feels like playing. Yesterday I felt carried back to my childhood when I moved for fun. I loved it. My arch is a little unhappy, though I am content. Wed, 10 Jul 2013 11:04:39 EST Enjoying week 2 Just got in from my first run of week two! I have to say it was nice to go from Friday, where I was happily running along for a minute, to today where I'm huffing and puffing again! I actually brought my boyfriend along on Friday, and felt bad because he was so winded. Amazing to think that only 6 days earlier I was in the same boat as him. I love how fast the body can adapt to changes you impose upon it. I was never a runner in school, most dreaded part of gym class. However, these day... Sun, 7 Jul 2013 09:13:04 EST I did it! I ran yesterday in our local 4th of July 5K. I was so nervous that I couldn't do it - especially when the person I was going to run with backed out. But I put on my headphones, just focused on the music, and after passing mile 2 realized that I could do it. And I did! It was a wonderful feeling and am so happy I didn't stop, I didn't walk, just ran the whole thing. And just under 41 minutes.

224 Fri, 5 Jul 2013 17:39:05 EST Race Day I finished the Revolutionary Run at Washington Crossing - the clock read 44:02. I sprinted to the finish at the end 30

364 Thu, 4 Jul 2013 12:02:31 EST 5K Bombed... Well... I decided to run my 5k on my treadmill and just joined a virtual race because I was kind of doubtful about my ability to run all of it. Today I got on my treadmill and I was able to jog for 1 mile straight but grew tired afterwards. I got so frustrated with myself I ended up saying forget it and walking away. I really want to run the whole 3 miles but I don't feel I'm ready and I'm really discouraged and disappointed with myself... What should I do? Fri, 28 Jun 2013 14:56:09 EST Calf pain while running I just finished day 3 of week 2. It was a tough ride. I am finding that no matter how much a stretch before I start running my calves get so tight and running is painful. Is there anything I can do to stop the tightness?
I've been doing so well getting up and running every morning and I really don't want to have to stop my streak. I'm hoping there is something I can do. Thu, 27 Jun 2013 16:19:14 EST Never ran a 5k before I'm 39 and I've never ran a 5k before. I'm in pretty good shape overall and have ran 3.1m in under 30 minutes on a treadmill. The open road should be the same I'd think but I really don't know. Thu, 27 Jun 2013 15:54:37 EST I finished Week 5! Anyone else? I just finished Week 5 today! I'm moving on to week 6 tomorrow. Thu, 27 Jun 2013 09:20:25 EST Day 1 of Week 6 and needing breathing tips! Holy mackerel! That was rough! Up until now, I haven't felt like I needed to stop because my heart/lungs can't keep up, but today I definitely considered it. Super happy I stuck with it though.

I think I need to work on the rhythm of my breathing as I ended up with a hitch in my shoulder and side during every run. Any tips for this? Wed, 26 Jun 2013 11:02:39 EST Finished first 5k I did it! 41:16 was me time at the Reno 5000 series 5k. It was a great morning. Ran more than walked which was my goal. Next goal will be to run the whole thing. My son ran with me. He's 26 and ran a 30:05 without training. Ah youth! Wed, 26 Jun 2013 10:01:54 EST just curious about other people's workouts I was curious about what others are doing other than the running schedule. I'm doing a 10 min walking warmup on the treadmill, then a 30 min cardio machine circuit, and then doing my walking/running time on the treadmill again. Do you do a cardio workout, a strength workout, or something else and do you do both on the same day or do you do them on seperate days? I'm just new to this whole healthy, excersise, and food watching so I'm learning as I go here. Tue, 25 Jun 2013 14:34:06 EST introduction Hello everyone,

I'm a little late on this but I'm Mike from Kentucky and just finished week1 and have started week 2. I'm enjoying this training program and can't wait for my 1st 5k in August. I've started Week 2 yesterday and was a little confused on the switching between walking and running. Are you suppose to walk until the 3:00 minute mark and then start running at 3:01 or do you wait and start running when it hits the 4:00 minute mark. I think I'm just making this more complic... Tue, 25 Jun 2013 14:29:15 EST I Did It! 43:09.3!! :) I completed my first 5k on Saturday. I participated in the Firecracker 5K in Chesterton, IN. I was really excited and anxious to start and ready to see if I could do it. We got off to a late start, but I still completed it in 43:09.3. I am very proud of myself for doing it. I liked the environment because it seemed like everyone was there to cheer everyone on and be supportive, something I normally don't have. And to my surprise, it wasn't just people who looked like runners or athletes, it w... Mon, 24 Jun 2013 13:07:05 EST Repeating week 7 Well, this past weekend got the best of me and I didn't get any running in. I think my dog was as bummed as I was.

My next chance is Wednesday morning, and I'm hoping to get out before the sun comes up.

I have my practice 5k on July 4th, but I'm not worried about running the whole thing, finishing it and not being last will be ok with me.

Kathy Mon, 24 Jun 2013 09:18:31 EST First solo 5K complete :) I gathered the confidence to complete a 5K with friends...but this final run of this challenge, I did it solo...and I wasn't sure I could do it. I am proud to say that I finished my 3.1 mile run - all by myself :) - in 48 minutes and 49 seconds! AND - I have completed a challenge :) Today was a good day :) Mon, 24 Jun 2013 00:09:14 EST Tomorrow (Saturday June 22) is the Big DAY :) By this time tomorrow, I will have participated in my first 5K. Still very nervous, but I'm excited about it as well. Last night I ran the inside track at the gym and was able to do 3 miles in about 40 minutes, combination jogging and running. I was really tired when I did it but I still wanted to do it and felt better afterwards. I am excited about doing it, still haven't told anyone except the people that already know about it (my nutritionist and therapist). I am just going to wait and do ... Fri, 21 Jun 2013 13:38:16 EST Restarting Week One This morning my chiropractor gave me the okay to start running again! Hurray! I am afraid to stress me body by picking up where I left off (week 4), so I am restarting my program. I figure if my injury seems to continue feeling well, I can always increase my running increments during my next run. I've actually missed my morning runs, so I am looking forward to strapping on my shoes and hitting the road tomorrow morning! Thu, 20 Jun 2013 18:16:54 EST Feeling completely ravenous! I have really been hitting my stride with running ( I am on week 7) but in the past week I have felt so hungry almost all the time. Could this be connected to the running?
Wed, 19 Jun 2013 21:58:57 EST Do Over :( I was well into week 2 when I was struck by the dreaded shin splints. I've been off for the past week and have decided to try again.

I'm just wondering if I should continue with week 2 or start completely fresh and redo week 1. I'm leaning toward doing a complete do over so that the shin splints don't come back. What would you do? Wed, 19 Jun 2013 11:11:19 EST First 5K - Done I ran (and walked a little) my first 5K on Father's Day, June 16th. It was a beautiful run with lots of interesting terrain - rocks, train trestles, past a waterfall, upstairs, downstairs, trails through woods -
I found that I actually enjoyed the challenge and was very satisfied that I finished. I think I'll try another one, although I'm not actually sure if I love running, yet. 214 Wed, 19 Jun 2013 07:35:31 EST 2 more days.... Did day 1 of week 8 today and ended up extending the run just a tiny bit because I didn't want to run past my house :) Ended up doing 2.75 miles in about 43 minutes this morning. The new running shoes are FANTASTIC. I'm planning on my final training run on Thursday and a rest day on friday - 5K on saturday!!! :) Tue, 18 Jun 2013 10:12:32 EST Eating before you run. Do you eat before you run? I don't usually eat before I exercise, since I usually do this first thing in the morning. This morning I tried to increase my time (1 min walk-4 min run) and only made it about a half hour. I had to walk home. I wonder if it was because I had an empty stomach.

Kathy Sun, 16 Jun 2013 07:03:29 EST Practice 5k I signed up for a 5k that is before the original race that I planned. The first one is on flatter ground, where the original race is run on rolling hills. I've been doing my walk/run intervals on hills to be ready, but I think this first race will at least give me an idea of the distance and how long it will take. I love the hills, I seem to run more consistent once I get to a flatter area.

Kathy 363 Wed, 12 Jun 2013 10:05:09 EST Encouragement Hi, I'm Jasmin, and I'm on week two.

though only yesterday did I decide to tell my trainer in the gym that I'd like to join the 4k race in October, and she actually "laughed at me" she started mocking me throughout the training session, until I finally couldn't take it anymore and told her to stop mocking me and that I "can" take the race "and" finish it, she told me that my training is inadequate and if I were to make it I need to be training non stop.
Regardless of her unpr... Wed, 12 Jun 2013 05:39:18 EST Week 7 - Something New The weather is fantastic, and I just discovered that there is a park with running path around it that is only about a block from my house. To break up the humdrum feeling of my workouts, I decided to take my run OUTSIDE! I must say, it was fun to run outside. Scenery changes, the sun and breeze are awesome, and I find that it's easier to set goals....I just tell myself "Keep going, it's down hill after you pass the water fountain". All these things said, I did find the run a bit more chal... Tue, 11 Jun 2013 19:34:07 EST What a wonderful feeling! Still flying high from completing my first 5k in more than six years!
I wrote a blog post about it here, if you'd like to hear how it went. Powerful stuff, this community! :)

urnal_individual.asp?blog_id=5377929

Congratulations to my fellow rookies!!!

185
Patrice in Ottawa Wed, 5 Jun 2013 23:35:32 EST Hi Team Hello .... brand newbie here doing something that I ALWAYS wanted to do but thought that I couldn't. I started a run/walk routine for about a couple weeks now but I decided to get a little more serious about it. My goal is to lose weight and to be able to run a 5k race. I find that after I finish my routine, I feel like a new person. I have energy and I'm not so stiff. I plan on following this program and more importantly doing something that I really like. I love the enthusiasm and encouragi... Wed, 5 Jun 2013 21:08:55 EST Week 4 - Day 1 I'm trying to add some hills, since the 5k I signed up for is rolling hills. I start out slow, and by the 3 interval, I'm really jogging 30

Kathy Wed, 5 Jun 2013 10:36:42 EST mapped out a 5k I am super excited. Today I mapped out a 5k in my neighbor hood so I can test my time at the end of this first 8 weeks. I have 30 weeks before my 5k so that means I have time for 3 3/4 times through this program. I will probably just stick with week 7 at the end of the 3rd round for those last 6 weeks and then week 8 the week of the race. Hopefully that will help me improve my time. Can anyway tell me if that is a good plan or if there is a better way to go about that? Thanks. Wed, 5 Jun 2013 04:20:20 EST first 5k finished! I finished my first 5k today. So many congrats to all of you who have done this. It was hard but so worth it! My time was just under 45 minutes and I did take some walk breaks. I definitely want to do another one in the fall. Sat, 1 Jun 2013 19:55:53 EST Week 5 Complete! I completed week 5 this week, and I participated in my second 5K race! :) I chose the very challenging and iconic Hospital Hill run in Kansas City. I was guessing that I could finish the 5K in about an hour based on my training. Oh what a wonderful surprise! I crossed the finish line at 41 minutes and 43 seconds!!!! VICTORY!!!!!! Sat, 1 Jun 2013 13:27:07 EST Whooo Hoo! Finished! Well I finally finished! did my 5 k in 37 minutes Yay! Had a few intervals where I walked for about 30 seconds but not many! Going to look at some other programs to keep me motivated to continue, I recall seeing another that is a bit more agressive than this one that I am going to try next. Fri, 31 May 2013 21:20:58 EST Tracking my run...calories? I have been using the interactive calendar to track my runs each week, but I can't seem to find how many calories I've burned, only the distance. Am I not looking in the right place? Thu, 30 May 2013 10:02:04 EST Week 1 Today I did Day 1, week 1. I did 7 intervals and "wogged" 3.25km in 42 min.
Feeling a great sense of accomplishment and eagerness to get this thing done! 104 Thu, 30 May 2013 01:25:43 EST Speed Hi all,
I did Couchto5K a while back, but am so out of shape now and am starting over. Today I did my first run, and it felt great. But I was wondering about speed...
I am SO slow. It actually takes me longer to do my route with the running intervals than without.
I wonder, how fast do you walk/run? Thu, 30 May 2013 00:49:18 EST How do I know when to repeat a week? I considered repeating week 4, but pushed ahead to week 5. I am doing fine, but it is definitely hard. How do I know when I need to repeat a week?

Should I be very comfortable in week 5 before moving on, or is part of building endurance feeling constantly challenged? Week 6 looks intimidating...what do you think? Tue, 28 May 2013 10:20:05 EST Finished Week 1! I finished week 1! Woo hoo!
I started this plan just to get into running again, but now I'm so inspired I think I may look for a 5k race.
Before this, every time I would run I would get shin splints and instant runners knee, so I began to think that I would never be able to run again. But I wasn't following a plan so I'd push myself too much on injured knees. So glad this plan is here.
My legs are sore, but it's a good feeling. Going to get a pedi on this rainy day to soothe ... Fri, 24 May 2013 13:21:11 EST Almost finished! My last day of week 4 is tomorrow! I can't believe I'm made it this far! I did my first 5K in more than 10 years last weekend after completing week 3. It was a surprise....the course was mis-marked and my friend and I ended up on the 1/2 marathon course. Once we figured it out, we turned back. When I got home, I calculated our distance using Runtastic online. According to that, we went about 5.5 miles in 82 minutes - a 15 minute pace :) Not bad...not bad at all. Even with the walking a... Thu, 23 May 2013 23:11:29 EST Week 2 Rest today, running planned on Wednesday, Friday an Sunday.
Weights Monday and Thursday Mon, 20 May 2013 09:14:26 EST Week 1 Done! I got the watch working, and this morning I walk/jogged for 45 minutes using the 4min/1min interval. Week 1 is done!

364 Training Sun, 19 May 2013 17:08:47 EST Hello! Hi everyone! I'm no stranger to Spark People (this is my third go) but I am new to the forums. My name is Brittany. I'm a 22 year old theater student. I've always had trouble committing to lead a healthy lifestyle. I've done some soul searching and am now working through the issues that were preventing me from starting. One of the reasons I was never quite able to follow through with things was because it felt like I was always going it alone. There is just so much love and support in the for... Sun, 19 May 2013 16:31:29 EST Rest Today I worked out very hard this week, so today is my rest day. I'm planning a long walk/jog tomorrow, and maybe some kayaking if the weather is nice. Sat, 18 May 2013 10:30:00 EST Week 1, Day 3 Got my walk/run in after work. It feels good, and I'm hoping that I will sleep well tonight.
312 Fri, 17 May 2013 21:52:05 EST Watch Alarm Question... I bought a Timex Ironman watch last night. Years ago, I had an Ironman watch that I could set the alarm to ring 4 minutes, then 2 minutes, so I would know when to walk and when to run. Does anyone know how to set this type of alarm? The instructions are not clear.

Thanks!
Kathy Fri, 17 May 2013 12:29:44 EST Finished Week 3 I finally think I will be able to finish the program this time, which is fantastic. I was so happy that this last run was a breeze to complete. It felt amazing to be able to push myself on intervals and be able to completely handle it.

My only concern is milage...I ran/walked nearly 5k on this run. Is this something anyone else has experienced? Fri, 17 May 2013 09:20:37 EST More Challenging Programs?? I'm only on week 3, but I was wondering if SparkPeople had another running program more difficult than this for when the 8 weeks is up? I really like the interactive training plan, it helps motivate me to go run! Thu, 16 May 2013 16:18:51 EST Week 1, Day 1 I went a little further today, since I've been walk/jogging for several weeks. I wasn't following a plan, so it was not regular. This plan will get me better focused so I can increase my jogging time.

Kathy
312 Wed, 15 May 2013 09:47:12 EST My Week 1 Day 1 Starts tomorrow I just joined this team. I have had a C25K app on my phone and used it 2x. I already walk about 3 miles per day. So I'm excited to start adding running to it. Hopefully I don't get the dreaded shin splints I get from walking/jogging on a treadmill. Tue, 14 May 2013 22:22:24 EST Is This Considered 'Cheating?" I just finished day 1 week 2, and after running for 2 minutes each time I had to stop for about 30 seconds to a minute. Is this bad? Wed, 8 May 2013 17:44:04 EST Getting Back into Shape! Hi everyone! I am so excited about this challenge! I have wanted to start running forever, but it has always seemed impossible for me. I have never been able to run without getting winded and having to stop. This plan seems really doable! Last year at this time I was in great shape, probably the best of my life, I was happy with my weight, living an active lifestyle, and doing yoga. Over the past year I have gained a lot of weight and my lifestyle has become very sedentary.

I am a... Wed, 8 May 2013 12:32:32 EST 5k in Central Park While visiting Manhattan I ended my training with a run in Central Park starting around the Harlem Meer then through the Conservatory Gardens to a finish around the Jackie O Reservoir. My pace actually earned a run on my fitness tracker! My official 5k isn't until October, but I've really enjoyed training more than I expected. This has been a great reunion with running for me. Wed, 8 May 2013 10:44:10 EST Realized that I was using another program! I could barely make it through wk 5 day 1, and we are supposed to run 20 minutes straight at the 3rd workout, but then I realized that I am following a different plan entirely! dah 198 I will try to do the other work out but will not beat myself up! Tue, 7 May 2013 09:19:32 EST 1st post ever-yahoo! unsure I'm in the right place I'm on day 1 of the 8 week program. I have 140 pounds to lose. I may have set my expectations to high when I chose this program. Day 1 went well. I guess I will just follow the program until my body tells me to stop. Tue, 7 May 2013 07:17:39 EST Cold symptoms I've been experiencing a sore throat, stuffy nose, and general fatigue for about 3 days. I am not sure if it's a cold or just allergies, but I definitely haven't felt motivated to exercise since last Friday.

When should I start running again? Should I run even if I still have cold symptoms? I don't have much experience running so I don't know what's best. Also, it's been really hard to resist eating comfort foods, especially since I've been "resting" (lying around) and I feel like... Mon, 6 May 2013 20:15:14 EST Week 4, Day 1 Today was a lot harder than I anticipated. I had to slow down twice during the 3 minute jogging parts, but I did finish! I got very out of breath on the first jog interval, but I will succeed! Sun, 5 May 2013 10:21:59 EST Shin Pain?! Hello everyone! I've just joined this program, I'm on my second day and geez... This is tough!!! But sometimes when I'm jogging/walking the area right above my ankles on the sides of my leg start burning really badly and I have to stop for about 30 sec to a min. When I start up again it is still burning but not quite as bad. This really makes exercising a chore and very painful! Does anyone have any ideas to what this could be?! I've had shin splints before and they don't feel like this!Help ... Fri, 3 May 2013 14:09:15 EST week 4 day 2 floundered I had spent all day walking with my backpack and the tempurature here in VTwent up to 80 degrees. I made it half way through my work out and started gettng dizzy, so i stopped, maybe stuckon week four a while Thu, 2 May 2013 15:43:46 EST I think I don't know how to run... So, I'm either horribly out of shape, or I'm doing something wrong, or both. I've been trying to do the week one workout. Day one was last Thursday, Day two was Monday, Day three was yesterday, and each time went exactly the same. I use the RunKeeper app on my phone, so I've included the pace I was walking/running in case that's part of the issue.

Four minutes walking, no problem. I walk my dogs all the time, so walking is good. I average a 16 minutes/mile.

One minute ru... Thu, 2 May 2013 10:53:50 EST Week 1 Day 1, seriously.... I was planning on starting today, made sure I switched music to my iPhone before I went to bed last night, got a good night's sleep, I was all ready to go. I wake up this morning, and it is pouring down rain, thundering, horrible. Even my dog refuses to go out in this. Great... What a wonderful start. Wed, 24 Apr 2013 13:50:35 EST Starting Over - how can I time myself? Hi fellow runners!
I've been on this group for a while, I ran my first 5k about 3 weeks ago, but I've got issues with shin splints and have been in physical therapy since the beginning of April. Today my therapist got me on the treadmill to practice the running form corrections that I need and he said I did great, it felt great too! He said I'm ready to try running again but he wants me to start out slowly and gave me a progression I need to follow, its similar to this program and to t... Tue, 23 Apr 2013 10:00:20 EST Finished first official 5k today! Tonight I ran my first official 5K race! I was slow, but finished it. WooHoo! Wow, since it started getting hot here a couple of weeks ago, I've been having trouble getting to the distance, but not tonight! So now my next goal is to run the whole thing without taking any walks and to improve my time. I finished today's officially in 40.46 minutes which is my fastest yet, (but still REALLY slow). The main thing for me is that I couldn't have walked it 4 months ago, and hadn't run at all since ... Wed, 17 Apr 2013 23:11:25 EST Glad to have found the motivation! Hello! :) I'm running a 5K in July and while that's a bit of time away, I really need to get motivated. I recently moved across the country and need a change of mindset, and a healthier way of being, to accompany that incredible life change. Everyone in the group seems wonderful and I'm looking forward to being motivated by everyone's success! :) Mon, 15 Apr 2013 22:38:15 EST 1st 5k completed I'm very excited to have complete my first 5k. I signed up using a time of 60 minutes, my goal was to complete it in 50 minutes and I did it in40.3 minutes. I feel good about getting it done. Sun, 14 Apr 2013 11:07:06 EST Week 2 in the Record Books I just finished week 2 this morning. This week started out a little rough, but by the time I completed my walk/run this morning, it seemed a lot easier! I am glad to see week 3 is similar, but just adding on one more leg to the route.

I consistently walk/ran a 15 minute mile, going 1.7 miles in 25 minutes.

There were several times this week where I thought "Oh, I'll do it tomorrow..." and made myself do it anyway. I really wanted to quit this week, but I pushed th... Sat, 13 Apr 2013 09:33:28 EST Week 1 Just finished week 1. I needed a rest day yesterday, so if I'm not too sore, doing cross training tomorrow and then a rest day on Friday, then Saturday start week 2. So excited! Wed, 10 Apr 2013 11:42:13 EST Hi I am at my goal weight having lost it all on weight watchers lost 49 lbs. I am planning on running the half marathon in Phoenix PF Changs, I am 53 years old and have never been at my goal weight ever. I have already been running for about an hour 3 days per week. I also run on the treadmill at the gym I am hoping to find people to talk to and I can offer support to anyone who needs it. I still am an emotional eater and this will probably be with me for the rest of my days, I really know what ... Mon, 8 Apr 2013 12:40:51 EST I did it!!! Yesterday, I did my first 5K!!! It was really cold 28F with a strong wind that made the windchill 19F. I kept wondering what the heck I had gotten myself into. I had so many layers on just trying to keep warm and I slowly had to shed some of them as I got going. I ran for 2 miles and then did a walk/run for the last 1.1 miles, but I finished and I did it in 43min 30 sec. A major reason, I had to start walking was because part of the lst stretch was on an airport runway and the strong wind... Sun, 7 Apr 2013 18:59:06 EST Week 1 Down 7 to go! I started week one with already turning my walks into runs. I had actually been running slightly longer intervals than what the program called for, but decided to stick with the program and focused on making my runs a little quicker.

I'll start week 2 tomorrow. I am signing up for my first race this week. It is Saturday, June 1, a week after I'll finish the program. It is an evening run with fireworks and glow sticks! Super excited!

Good luck to all the rest complet... Sat, 6 Apr 2013 14:08:51 EST Week 8 - Finished? OK, I've done the 2 40 minute sessions for Week 8, but I am still short of the 5K distance. My pace was faster today than the first one this week, but I guess I'll just try to eliminate the walks to get the distance and better pace. So I think I'll walk 1, run 9, etc. and hopefully will get to 5K in 40 minutes or less (assuming I make it, LOL). Today I was close, maybe .1 mile short.

I have 13 days until my race, so I can just keep training every other day until I get there. I'... Fri, 5 Apr 2013 22:41:56 EST Color run dallas May 11 Anyone signed up for the color run 5k in Dallas on May 11? Thu, 4 Apr 2013 15:21:48 EST So excited Hi everyone. I'm so excited to find this plan. Running three miles without stopping is one of my big goals, but a plan to help me was what I was lacking.
How does everybody time thier intervals? Do I need a stop watch? It seems like there would be too much bouncing around going on while running. I'm afraid it will be really hard to notice how many times that second hand swings around.
Anybody have any good tips regarding timing, I appreciate any advice I can get. Thu, 4 Apr 2013 14:14:53 EST Week 1 complete! Okay, I have completed week 1. Not so bad, a little sore. Hope I am ready for week 2!! Tue, 2 Apr 2013 06:00:45 EST Finished!! I ran my first 5k on Saturday, my time was 36:28, I finished 31st in my age group (51 runners) and 170th overall (245 runners). I'm proud of what I put up!

I have struggled with shin splints for months, so I saw my doctor this morning. Good news is he doesn't think its anything more serious than just inflammation. He has prescribed me Voltarin (sp?) to take instead of Advil/Aleve and wants me taking that 2x a day for 2 weeks and wants me to go to physical therapy for 4-6 weeks... Mon, 1 Apr 2013 11:25:12 EST Breathing Does anyone have any suggestions on proper breathing while jogging/running?

I just recently starting jogging and after 3 and 1/2 blocks I have to slow to a walk just so I can catch my breath again...

if anyone has any suggestions, i would greatly appreciate it Sun, 31 Mar 2013 14:49:39 EST Oops! I was to start week four this morning, but I loved week three so much that I repeated a week three exercise.
20 Thu, 28 Mar 2013 19:29:30 EST Week 7 Day 1 - done! Wow, I did it! 2.43 miles...I am really slow, but I wanted to be sure I finished it the first session. For the next two, I'll try to work on pace some. If I can't pick it up some, I'll be faster walking my 5K, LOL! But, I'm actually amazed I am doing this and how much more it is than in the beginning when jogging for one minute was kind of hard, so maybe by the end of next week, I'll really be able to run the whole 5K distance...maybe?

Luckily my upcoming 5K is a company spon... Wed, 27 Mar 2013 23:05:59 EST Week 6 completed! Whew!! Wow, this one was harder...I managed the first 2 training sessions by just pushing through it, but in the 3rd session, I just ran out of air and breath after the 7th heart was racing and I couldn't get my breathing slowed down, even after 2 minutes of walking. It was really windy that day and at the end, I was running into the wind, and I'm fighting some chest congestion from a cold, so after a day of rest, (on a day with not so much wind) I tried it again, and made sure I slow... Mon, 25 Mar 2013 22:22:06 EST Week 2 DONE!! After week 1, the first day for this week was torture. I was sore. But i kept going and finished. I took a couple days off and then finished the week. I am actually starting to enjoy going to the gym. It more of an "I want" instead of and "i need" now :)
I was actually surprised at my progree in just 1 week. By the last day and the last running interval, i wanted to push myself so I ran longer than needed. A whole 2 minutes longer!! I couldnt believe it. Now i have a head start on week 3... Sun, 24 Mar 2013 20:01:17 EST Week one Done!! I am starting this program to train for my first 5k! Its a walk/jog/or run. I want to be able to do more than just walk the whole thing!
Before starting this i can honestly say i am terrible at running and can not last longer than 30 seconds. So this week was pushing it!
I survived! I did each day like i was supposed to. Out of breath and dying for water, might i add.
Looking forward to improving my mile time: 19.58 and increasing my run time. Sun, 24 Mar 2013 19:51:25 EST It's time! Hello everyone! I have been a member of SparkPeople for a while, but I was mainly a lurker who read other people's blogs and tried to avoid actually being accountable for anything. I have finally changed my mind set and am looking forward to putting much more effort in to fitness and nutrition and reaching my goals. I'm hoping to add some new friends and find motivation any and everywhere! Tue, 19 Mar 2013 09:34:48 EST pace My speed is the same for walking & jogging; I don't know if I should be glad or dismayed. 41 Sat, 16 Mar 2013 09:32:12 EST Registered for my first 5K! I'm so excited!
I have been training since September, around November I started getting really bad shin splints, I tried to push through but the more I ran on them the worse they got. I tried taking a week off and starting again but they would always come right back.
So I decided after a particularly painful run in early January that I needed to stop running totally until they were fully healed, like no more pain when I pressed under my shins, let them really heal.
It broke... Wed, 13 Mar 2013 13:59:14 EST Finished! I'm so excited to have made it here. I didn't know if I could do it when I started, but I did and I only had to repeat a week once. I did my 5k in 35:49, with 6 minutes of walking. From here, I plan to do SP's 5k running program. Hopefully I can run my next 5k straight through!

What do other people do after completely the program? Sat, 9 Mar 2013 11:46:18 EST First Day of Week 4 Wow, I did it! I was worried about getting this one done, but I managed to do it. I think I'll be sore tomorrow, but I DID IT ALL! It was just about perfect temperature for running...mid-60's, so at least I wasn't dying from heat.

Should be easier on Wednesday...Yay! Mon, 4 Mar 2013 22:27:08 EST Done I just finished my 5K! I am so glad for the help of SparkPeople to get to this point! Good luck to everyone in the program. Now my goal is to beat 35 minutes!

364 Sat, 2 Mar 2013 11:08:55 EST Finished Week 3! I finished Week 3 today...this week wasn't too hard. I had to do one of the days on a treadmill (which I don't normally use, I run outside on concrete), in a hotel since I was traveling for work this week, and it was too easy! I don't know if it was just the day or what, but I was not breathing as hard as I was today when I did the last session. Maybe doing the same on a treadmill is easier? Some days we have strong wind where I run because I run on the waterfront, but not today, and it ... Fri, 1 Mar 2013 21:42:34 EST A couple General Questions I'm not sure how to track my progress because I'm not sure how far I'm running. So how would I track? I'm not going on a typical route (I can't use the map your route or whatever it's called).

Also I'm using an ipod version of the c25k because well it's easier to follow because it tells me when to run and when to walk. The difference is it's 9 weeks. I'm currently on week 2, day 2. Is it okay to skip day 3 if I feel I am ready for the next week? Both days I ran additionally. I wou... Wed, 27 Feb 2013 06:48:39 EST Last Week! I just completed day one of this week and I am pumped! My hubby and I finished out 3.4 miles on our run/walk today. It is amazing to know that I have less than that to do this Saturday for the 5K.

104 Tue, 26 Feb 2013 13:26:49 EST Hi, all! I've been on sparkpeople for a while and now ready to get moving! My sister is getting married on 4/20, so my husband and I, our three kiddos, and another sister will be making the 6 hr drive on 4/19. I'm setting first thing on 4/19 as my goal to run my own personal 5k! It will feel great to know I've done it while I spend all those hours on my butt. Happy training!

Sat, 23 Feb 2013 16:40:59 EST Week 5 Distance Hey everyone,

I just restarted Week 5 after being miserably sick for 2 weeks. I've been running on the treadmill since the beginning, but slowed down my pace since I had such a long break while I was sick.

I was just wondering what distance most people were covering during this week. I did the first day of Week 5 yesterday: 2.10 mi, 30 min.

Happy running!

Allison Tue, 19 Feb 2013 17:02:26 EST Beginning Week 2 Just finished day one of week two! It was a jump going from the 3 to 4 minute running intervals, but I did it! What's even better is that the hubby and I ran to the library and back so that we could return a book. We got a great workout in and saved ourselves the time and gas of taking that book in!

182 Mon, 18 Feb 2013 22:21:54 EST Week 3 Day 1 Finished Week 3 Day 1. I was amazed that I did it. I was so glad that the interval didn't change this week (3 min walk to 2 min jog), only the total minutes. I was soooo glad to be able to walk again after each 2 minute jog. 224 Mon, 11 Feb 2013 23:49:29 EST tracking with fitbit I have the fitbit and it tracks my steps and is automatically added to my fitness tracker.

My question is that when I mark my progress for this program it also adds the mileage so I am getting twice the mileage?

How should I track this?

Thanks Fri, 8 Feb 2013 00:36:51 EST Running form and breathing Hey there!
I am actually new to this team, so HI!! 213
I hated, loathed and did whatever I could to get out of running when I was in High school. But over the last three week, I have really really enjoyed my time "running". I am doing it indoors, in place for the most part. I run in random circles in the house to my Wii. I can keep it up for 30 minutes so far!
My question is this: my son age 12 wants to run with me... He is the most awkward runner I have EVER see... Mon, 4 Feb 2013 10:37:50 EST Week Four - oTake Tw Up until now, I've been doing pretty well on the program, but week 4 totally kicked my butt! It wasn't until day three that I was able to finish, and at a lower speed that normal. I'll be repeating it, because I am definitely not ready to add a 6th interval. But I'm okay with that.
381 Sat, 2 Feb 2013 11:56:13 EST Finished my 3rd week Surprised and very happy to find that I'm not gasping to myself "When is this two minutes going to be over???", but more "Just a few more seconds until I walk again."

Feeling confident I can do this!
It's a great feeling. 334

I've even started telling people I'm doing the C25K program now...
