Join for motivation, encouragement, knowledge, and support through the process!!! SparkPeople Healthy Vegan Slim-Down, Feel Great Workshop Team Messageboard I'm New Too! :) Hi! I'm hoping to get ideas on how to get more vegan complete proteins into my diet as I tend to fall short of that goal every day. When I add nuts, I get tot much fat (even though it's good fat) in my daily report. Plus nuts are not a complete protein. I'm eating quinoa, but I try to keep that within the healthy carb limit as well. It's tough, so any suggestions you have would be greatly appreciated. :) Sun, 9 Feb 2014 11:40:49 EST new Hello all
I have been bouncing around this site for quite some time and just keep falling back out i have 7 kids and am a nurse as well, i went vegan about 5 months ago and have had about 2 slip ups..which idont think is too awfully bad...anyway..i have been one ofthose bad vegans...cakes and alot of i haven't been losing weight like i should and would like some help and any advice on meal planning etc....great to see this team...also does anyone knw how to also eliminate d... Sun, 20 Oct 2013 15:02:19 EST Hello all! Sooo glad to find all of you! I have been vegan for over 3 years. I found that when I first began eating this way I lost body fat, but not really pounds. Now I have been the same weight for ages, and have the motivation to lose, but not the knowledge evidently. I truly thought that eating the vegan way would cause me to lose weight naturally and easily--haha! I am beginning to add exercise, but would love anyone's tips to cutting back calories when it seems that I'm not eating that many ... Sun, 28 Jul 2013 11:04:19 EST Glad to have found this team! I reached my goal back in August and began my own personal Vegan journey January 1, 2013. I've had a hard time tracking my food/s because I haven't updated my favorites on my Nutrition tracker to reflect my new Vegan food choices. While I'm still good with my weight, there are times I feel like I'm not 'on board' the way I should be with maintaining my weight (it goes up and down).

Anyway, I'm looking forward to snooping around all the threads and joining in on some of the conver... Mon, 25 Feb 2013 17:30:19 EST Tempeh - How do you like to cook it? Ok. I've semi-mastered making my own seitan. I can press tofu, and I can cook it a bunch of different ways. This leave tempeh. I'm stuck.

I can make an ok breakfast hash with it, but everything else I've tried just doesn't do it for me. I marinated it and baked it, tried making 'bacon"... and everything is just "eh...."

What do you like to do with it? Any good recipes would be MUCH appreciated! Thu, 18 Oct 2012 19:24:12 EST are you addicted to candy and junkfood? Read on.. I was at the store last night and I had a CRAVING I mean you would have thought there was crack in it CRAVING for peaches!

I bought a single peach-- and it was the most delicious piece of fruit I've ever had in my entire life. It was so juicy I had to use a paper towel. :)

Why am I bragging about my peach?? Because for the longest time I was a candy-a-holic... a true junk food lover.. and now all I want is fruit to satisfy my sweet cravings.

If you're like me.... Sun, 23 Sep 2012 00:36:43 EST Team Leaders Hello!
I wanted to introduce myself - my nickname's Pickle (I'm honestly not sure how it happened, but it certainly could be worse!) I've been a lurking member of this group for awhile now, then I saw that the leader had been inactive so I asked be made a leader. I didn't even know that was approved, but it seems like I was. There's also another leader, I apologize I can't remember her name but she is very passionate about this topic so it should be really exciting.
I am not a stric... I was vegetarian for years b/c I was easily got grossed out with meat and hated cooking or handling raw meat at home. B/c of the high protein diets that were being marketed, I thought I had to keep meat in my diet. Finally, I said enough is enough and removed it once and for all. I found some great books and documentaries on the veg... Mon, 25 Jun 2012 12:18:54 EST Excited to meet some new folks!!! Hello All!

My name is Melanie and I am new to the group. I've been toying around with gaining control of my weight since I gained about 100 lbs. in college. I was a lifelong competitive swimmer and was injured during my sophomore year. Turns out, you can't keep eating 5,000-7,000 calories per day and not gain weight when you don't workout 30 hours per week...go figure. So while I chalk up the last 20 years to lazy and unmotivated, I am finally ready to commit and make that permanen... Thu, 12 Apr 2012 05:39:10 EST Newbie to the group; not to veganism! Hi!

I've been a vegan for well over ten years. I've learned to make fantastic cupcakes, cheesecakes, country fried tofu, and all manner of foods that have that have been delicious and animal free, but hard on the waist line.

I've been a member of Sparkpeople for a while now, and have hit my weight loss goals, but I find that the community aspect of the site is what keeps me focused. Wed, 4 Apr 2012 16:34:27 EST Veganism "Too Difficult"? Sometimes when it comes up in conversation that I'm vegan, people claim that while they admire vegans that they could never be vegan. They say it's too hard.

I make the point that it can be hard in the beginning, this being because it's a time when you need to get to know the ins and outs, etc. However, after you know what's "safe", it's quite easy (to me anyway).

What do you say, or what would you say, if you were confronted with this type of argument? I basically (nice... Mon, 2 Apr 2012 11:55:52 EST Pink Slime Found this article and it reinforces my Eat To Live guidelines. Sat, 4 Feb 2012 09:27:43 EST I'm Back!!! Sorry I haven't been around in awhile. I expected week 1 to be a larger loss as it often is, water weight and whatever, it was about 9lbs. I figure only 2-4lbs of that was real weight loss. But I just weighed in at end of week 2- well the scale isn't terribly consistent but it looks like I lost nothing-1 lb. I've continued to eat within my calorie range, continued to work out at least 30 minutes a day. The only significant difference I can... Fri, 13 Jan 2012 22:31:23 EST New to the group Hello everyone I went to the doctor today and he wants me to be on a vegan diet. Know nothing about it so I need some help. How can I get started?
Vickie Thu, 12 Jan 2012 22:21:56 EST Hi Hello everyone! Staring Sparks tomorrow and hoping I can lose weight and get healthier! The messages are so motivational on here =) Sun, 8 Jan 2012 20:29:57 EST Hi there! I'm a 10+ years vegan, prior to that about 10+ years vegetarian, I love fresh, local organic foods and I like to cook. I have a teenager, and they are all about sweets- I make a treat for her, she takes one piece and my husband and I split the rest of the pan. 50 lbs later- I've got to stop these sweets and snacks! I have a toddler too, and if treat foods are around, she finds them. I'd much rather she enjoy fruit than ask for cookies. Sun, 1 Jan 2012 22:00:01 EST Newbie Hello!
My name is Charleen and I've been vegan for 4 months now. I was vegetarian for a couple of years and tried vegan once before but, I guess I just wasn't ready for that at that time. I'm trying to do more toning than weightloss these days. Lately I find that I just don't have enough motivation to exercise most days but I'm hoping that being part of a group will give me the little push I need to get back on track and to keep up with my vegan diet.

I'm looking forward t... Fri, 30 Dec 2011 22:56:51 EST i ran out of money Does anyone know how to protein in the diet besides veggie burgers? Sat, 17 Dec 2011 10:08:49 EST Hello Hello! My name is Raynene and my doctor put me on the vegan diet today. I don't know much about the nutrition info though. Fri, 2 Dec 2011 21:27:37 EST Vegan Thanksgiving- YUM!!! For Thanksgiving this year, my husband and I stayed at home. It was easier than trying to be nice to snarky relatives, "enjoy" their bad-tasting food, and slug around with after dinner fullness.

I made veggie loaf, green bean casserole, and mashed potatoes for the two of us. What a workout! It took me about 3 hours to make our little feast.

The results were worth it though. My husband pigged down most of what I made. I got to eat too of course, however had to make sure ... Fri, 2 Dec 2011 08:36:11 EST Those Habits We Need To Break I was just thinking today about bad habits, not just ones in our diets but ones overall, that we need to break to really be free in our lives.

I started taking a medication that interacts with alcohol with deadly results. If I drink while taking this med, I will get very, very sick and if I drink enough I could die. With this in mind I'm not touching a drop of alcohol!

I'm not an alcoholic and never have had a problem with alcohol. However, with cutting it out of my life... Sun, 6 Nov 2011 10:18:03 EST Potluck Dishes for Carnivores? What dishes or recipes do you take when you need to take a potluck dish for carnivores. Do you have any old classics, like the old-style comfort food that reminds you of fall, that you shouldn't be eating because it contains loads of butter or other fatty, animal product ingredients?

Pumpkin pie comes to mind for me, along with apple strudel.

I was wondering if anyone can think of ways to veganize these foods and make them less fattening at the same time, so we can budget them into our diets without totally sabotaging ourselves.

One thing is ... Fri, 16 Sep 2011 10:27:15 EST Hi Hey All,

I am currently following the ETL plan which is Vegan in nature. So far it is going okay. Thought this team might add another dimension and maybe some fun.

LV Wed, 24 Aug 2011 17:08:01 EST Single Healthiest Vegan Ingredient Award What single food/ingredient do you think is the healthiest for vegans?

I'm actually voting for the humble, yet often overlooked avocado. I should eat more of these and find myself in the same mindset that maybe many of you have, and that is that because they're fatty that they must be bad. Not so. The avocado is full of good stuff, and has the magic power of being filling, so after half an avocado we're not tempted by other food as much.

What's your favorite go-to food... Wed, 24 Aug 2011 12:29:56 EST Vegan Menus in Vegas Restaurants I just got back from a trip to Vegas. I was expecting there to be a bit more awareness about veganism, seeing as how the strip lives on tourism. Some restaurants knew what I was asking for and some, well, didn't understand that a chicken is an animal product. Geesh!

What did impress me were the restaurants in the Wynn hotel. The Wynn is owned by a vegan, so one would actually expect there to be vegan awareness. I really have to recommend those restaurants for having a good selectio... Wed, 17 Aug 2011 13:42:44 EST Dreaded Airplane Food I'm going on a trip in 5 days (woohoo!!!), and I think I get a meal on the flight (or at least I'd better for how expensive the ticket was!).

It did ask for dietary preferences, and I indicated vegan. This has always worked in the past. Normally the meat eaters are jealous because the vegan food I get is edible, and their food is beyond questionable.

I'm just worried about the health value of this meal. Do you think one meal matters? I'm thinking that just making healthy... Fri, 5 Aug 2011 10:52:59 EST Grilling = Summer Fun! I was afraid of grilling after I read that there are carcinogens in grilled meat. Last week I read that a new study is out showing that it is a specific substance in animal flesh that reacts and causes these carcinogens, and that vegetables do not have this issue.

After reading this I got so psyched and fired-up the grill!

What are your favorite things to grill? I personally love tofu grilled. I also love fake Italian sausage (Tofurkey makes a good one). All of the vegg... Thu, 21 Jul 2011 12:17:16 EST Is this team still active? Hi there,

Just wondering how active this team is ~ I'd like it to be active but I know sometimes life gets in the way.

What is everyone up to?

Any bright ideas on how to slim down and feel great?

Always up for bright ideas!

Hope to hear from you soonest...... Sun, 17 Jul 2011 18:21:02 EST Carb/Starch Addiction??? This has been on my mind recently. I went to the family doctor a few months ago for a physical. She was giving me diet advise, and said that based on the foods I told her I was eating the most of and loved the most that I was addicted to carbs/starch, and needed to cut back.

I've since started ETL so I'm not eating a lot of starch anymore.

Question- Do you believe her? I'm assuming that because she's a doctor that she knows much more than I do about that kind of thing. ... Thu, 7 Jul 2011 14:22:43 EST Important: Washing "Pre-Washed" Veggies You've probably already heard this, but I'll make it a public service announcement anyway for those who haven't heard.

Tainted greens and even produce have caused more food poisoning cases than even chicken and other meats! We all think of chicken as the big culprit, but your endive is more likely to harbor those pesky bacteria than chicken. What a scary thought.

We've just got to be diligent about making sure that we thoroughly and properly wash all of our fresh produc... Thu, 30 Jun 2011 11:06:22 EST Diet + Nutrition Boot Camp? I'm just floating this idea to get some responses from you guys. What do you think of a Diet + Nutrition Boot Camp as a challenge for July? I'd like to do a challenge in July, however everyone is doing the "drop 2 lbs a week" or whatever challenge and I'd like to do something different and more productive over here.

What do you think? If you don't like this idea, then do you have any ideas of your own? If we get good ideas then we can have better challenges!

Melinda Tue, 21 Jun 2011 13:03:51 EST Recipe You Made Into Your Own I bought a bag of Glory brand bagged kale and made the recipe on the back. Let me just say that I didn't really think a lot of it.

I got around to thinking about it, and I decided to give it an overhaul. What I ended up with is actually very tasty, low calorie, filling, and altered enough from the original that it no longer resembles the original.

What recipes have you made your own? Do you have any suggestions for how to go about changing a recipe that may need improve... Sat, 18 Jun 2011 16:37:41 EST The Best Part of Weight Loss Maybe this is a silly question, but I think we'll all have surprisingly different answers.

What is the best part of weight loss to you?

For me, it's the simple satisfaction of success, and of a job well done. Yes, the weight is going and happily I can fit into smaller and smaller clothes, and my health is improving. However, this all comes through hard work. My work is creating change, and that's very satisfying. Mon, 13 Jun 2011 11:04:06 EST Rewards for Goals Met I started this thread in the other group I lead, and I think it would be good here too.

When you reach a goal, say you lost 10 lbs, what's a way you treat yourself? What are your rewards for goals?

For me, I get to spend $50 on myself in any way I want. For the first goal I bought a yoga mat, hand weights, and yoga clothes. For this second goal coming up I'm getting my ears re-pierced and one of those manicures where the polish stays on for a couple of weeks (Yah! No doi... Tue, 24 May 2011 11:00:08 EST Staying The Course On Vacation I can maintain veganism on vacation, that's not the problem. There's a lot of vegan junk food out there that I could eat.

The problem comes when avoiding additives, oils, sweeteners, etc. I eat pretty clean and avoid most junk. I also follow ETL, which is strict with no junk.

I'm going to Vegas in August. It's a while away, however I need to plan where we're going to eat. We're going for 4 days. I'll hopefully be at goal by then and want to still fit into my goal sized... Wed, 18 May 2011 09:00:39 EST Treats and Cravings I just talked about this in the chat thread, but I thought it was interesting enough for its own thread.

My husband (who is in this journey with me) and I noticed that for us, eating treats such as confections is bad news. This is because then our bodies crave more of it, and it's much harder to resist. If I eat one of those cupcakes I worship, then it's much easier to fall into the addiction trap again. I do see sugar as an addiction.

What do you think is true for yours... Wed, 11 May 2011 07:21:12 EST Budgeting! I'm reading ETL and yipes! Scary. I definitely want to try it, though. My biggest problem is .... budget. I simply don't have a big enough grocery budget to buy *enough* food. When hubs and I ate the same food and I restricted my own intake, I could get away with $50-65 a week (Processed, boxed food is so *cheap!*). But now that I'm eating healthy food, and *more* food, the bill's jumped up to $80-100, and even then I'm running out of food. I think a large part of the problem is feeding two c... Fri, 6 May 2011 11:15:32 EST Leafy Greens I'm new to the world of leafy green cuisine. I follow ETL, and usually this has included for me a lot of fruit and other veggies, however not the basis of it, which is supposed to be the green leafy veggies.

I decided to change my ways. I bought some kale (second attempt at making kale) and followed a recipe on the package. I boiled it for 20 minutes, drained off half the water, added a can of flavored diced tomatoes, Italian seasoning, rosemary, and then cooked until the flavors b... Mon, 2 May 2011 10:33:24 EST What A Waste Of Time and Taxpayer's Money!!!

/new-eating-disorders-are-they-real

So overweight people are labeled as being binge eaters (whether they are or not, generally). The very thin are anorexic, if they are or not, generally. Both medical conditions have certain criteria. What I'm pointing out though is that in society, if someone sees someone who is very thin, they assume that person is anorexic, which isn't fair, just like assuming someone with a larger body ha... Wed, 27 Apr 2011 10:58:28 EST On A Rampage!!! Another New Resource!!! sorry, wrong site! Tue, 26 Apr 2011 09:10:33 EST Cooking Question I have a recipe for vegan meat loaf that I'm going to make for the second time tonight. The only problem with it is that it's a bit dry.

Traditional meat loaf gets its moisture of course from the fat in the meat. This vegan version calls for "Gimme Lean" brand fake meat. While really yummy, it's dry, as I said.

I was thinking of adding more ketchup, but I don't want it to be overwhelmed with ketchup. Any ideas that won't add fat?

Thanks! Wed, 20 Apr 2011 09:53:36 EST Another Cool Recipe Site! Check out (yes, I spelled it right). Just put in a word of your choice, for example I wanted vegan food so I put in "vegan", and it will pull up selections. I pulled up vegan mac & "cheese". I found all kinds of recipes for it, all of which sound good. I picked one that got 5 stars to try. I'll probably make it this week. I have a weakness for mac & "cheese". Tue, 19 Apr 2011 15:08:06 EST Cool Recipe Site!

This site, while not containing a zillion recipes, allows you to input ingredients you have and then it spits out recipes containing those things. It's supposed to work better than it does. I'm keeping an eye on it to see if it improves. I searched for KALE, something rather mundane, and it didn't come back with anything. Sigh. I don't like kale anyway but it was just what came to mind to try out the vegerator. Sat, 16 Apr 2011 13:29:16 EST Fave Vegan Food Products!!! What are your favorite processed vegan food products, or do you avoid them altogether?

I like Daiya cheese. If I let myself I could eat the whole bag at once. I only get it on rare occasions now because I'm trying to avoid processed food. The stuff is good though. 4 Fri, 8 Apr 2011 13:53:17 EST A Vegan World, Not A Vegan Club I love what Vegan Outreach says. They say that we're trying for a vegan world, not a vegan club.

The reason I'm excited about the expansion of veganism, besides my animal's rights and environmental causes, is that it makes it so much easier to find food! There is soy milk everywhere, there are restaurant options, and labels now say if the product contains dairy! I'm way psyched over this!

What changes have you noticed in society, if any, since veganism started taking of... Thu, 7 Apr 2011 12:15:23 EST Hello! I'm a brand-new vegan and wanted to find a small group I could be active in here at SparkPeople without getting lost, that was solely vegan so that all posts were applicable. So... here I am! I hope this is a good fit.

My story, as it were.

In 2009 I got to my lowest weight by a combo of lots of exercise and really restricted eating. I loved how I looked and I even felt pretty good from all the exercise, but it simply wasn't sustainable. I went vegetarian in October 20... Tue, 5 Apr 2011 13:20:50 EST Time Article on Weight Loss/Exercise I just read an interesting article in Time Magazine.

The author claimed that according to his/her research and conversations with various experts that it isn't vigorous exercise that helps us to get thin. This is because it triggers our hunger response. We respond by drinking that sports drink, that Starbucks or whatever, and the consumption negates our efforts at the gym. They claim that it is through daily activity, such as walking a lot, gardening, raking, etc. that we burn man... Growing up we always dipped the leaves in melted butter but obviously I don't want to do that. Anybody have good ideas for a sauce or dip? Wed, 30 Mar 2011 09:30:53 EST Newbie needs help reading labels So, I succumbed to one of my "junk food" standbys from the old days: Poppy's frozen pierogies (potato and onion flavor). I make most of my food from scratch, but had a few bags left in the freezer, and had half a bag for dinner tonight.
