SparkPeople Injured Runners Recovering to Run Again Team Messageboard Message Removed Message Removed Wed, 25 Apr 2012 16:04:59 EST Let's get to know each other Hi - I'm Laura - recovering from left knee surgery - just started the last 7 weeks to get active again. Learning to slowly run again. I had knee surgery right knee in 2009. I really enjoy running and want to get back to it. I realize I need to move slower and not rush it. I definitely do not want any injuries. It takes so, so long to recover from them. 223 311 Tue, 24 Apr 2012 21:16:20 EST Let's Get this Team Active !! Hello everyone: I am an injured runner who has had knee surgery on both knees and very badly wanting to run again. I am making slow progress and I am inviting everyone on this team - to check in either every day, or every other day and get to know everyone and work at all of us achieving our goals for ourselves and each other!! I am no leader - but I noticed the team had no leader, no team goals - I posted a team goal as walk/run 5 miles a week. Please check in and support each other.
... Sun, 15 Apr 2012 14:58:22 EST Todays log in points 2 234 Sat, 28 May 2011 05:01:53 EST I have no idea what is wrong with me... So, in November I developed a nasty tendinitis in my right shin. I had already been going to physical therapy for other things (knee pain, ITBS, etc) so they started working on the tendinitis too. At first I was scared it was a stress fracture b/c the pain was local and it hurt ALL the time. It was determined not to be a stress fracture and thus began the strengthening workouts. In January I didn't feel like I'd gotten the relief I was looking for, so I started seeing an ART doctor (Active Re... Tue, 17 May 2011 12:13:15 EST Do I count? I've been having problems with my left foot ever since I had "corrective" surgery back in 2008. I am still running right now. I'm finally seeing a much better foot specialist and soon I will have to have surgery again to correct my problems from the first surgery. So I will be sidelined soon (I will know more by the end of next week) and I am totally bummed out. Looking to find people who understand where I'm coming from. Tue, 1 Mar 2011 07:36:39 EST How's It Going? I haven't checked into groups much. I like the support but I consider it counterproductive to sit on my hiney on the computer excessively instead of being active.

I'm more than thrilled to report success in my mission, one of 'em anyhow. My weight has continued to decrease and I am now 2 lbs. north of my goal (145 lbs.), my first goal anyhow, that of getting into the Average BMI category and out of the Overweight category. I would like to lose another 10-20 lbs, though I thin... Sun, 20 Feb 2011 13:16:26 EST Seeing Dr. finally Well I just can't take it anymore...this self diagnosis is not working so I made an appointment with an Orthopedic/Sports med doctor. I can only hope he can help me and tell me not to stop running. Wish me luck.

Sheryl Sat, 5 Feb 2011 18:02:19 EST Knee Osteo Hi Team - I'm Sue, 54/f/Rochester, NY. I'm a yoyo, LOL. There have been years where I was fit'n'trim and doing lots of running. I had been in the Army in my 20s. But in adulthood there were years I was depressed, drinking lots and hence putting on a lot of weight, or from pregnancies and not taking the weight off. In 2005 I took the weight off again, and got patches with a local club for 100 race miles, my weight was down to 125, and I wasn't drinking. In 2007 I hurt my knee. I guess I... Mon, 24 Jan 2011 22:23:58 EST After SFX of L Hip Hi!
Am new to SP and this team. Was doing well on the WW program, having gone from 224 to 183 lbs within a year, but had to cancel due to my diagosis of a stress fracture in my L hip - with mandate by an orthopedic MD for no WB exercise for 12 weeks!!

Sad to say, day before I started feeling pain I did a 5-miler on the Bally's indoor track (I am slow, but only occasionally mix in some very slow 4.0 mph jogging with my brisk walking). Next day spent 12 action-packed hours at ou... Sat, 22 Jan 2011 11:55:29 EST Foot Turns Out?? When any of you run does your foot turn out? I think this is my problem...I have a nasty callus on my big toe and my shoe wear is on the inside at the front of my shoe and on the outside at the back. So I guess I land with my foot turned? Has anyone heard of this or if it is even possible.

Sheryl Sat, 1 Jan 2011 07:23:51 EST Backsliding I'm in a funk; i can't believe that after achieving so many fitness goals this year in 2010 - that i have again - allowed my weight to creep back up. Injured after my first half marathon and tried to still run and could not - now i will be having surgery end march 2011 and i am feeling sorry for myself - so what have i done - i have gained 22lbs since sept 26/10!!! I am 2 pounds heavier than when i started in jan 2010 - and i was at 138lbs in july 2010!!! ughhhh
I am so mad at myself - ... Tue, 28 Dec 2010 21:05:57 EST Just the SP Team I needed! Hello everyone! I have been on SP for almost 4 years now and Running has helped me to reach my goal weight. 2008 was my glorious running year as I started racing for the first time: I ran several 5Ks (PR was 24:10 minutes), 10K (PR 54:07 minutes) and placed First Female Team in a Marathon Relay! ☺

Then, as I tried to slow down and to keep my HR into the aerobic zone (on the recommendation of a so-called sport Chiropractor/Kinesiotherapist) I started struggling with Plantar Fa... Thu, 4 Nov 2010 09:15:27 EST depression and ITBS/Piriformis pain I had a great half marathon 4 weeks ago, but I started to feel some pain at mile 12. Was sore the next few days, but I was ok. I climbed Mt. Mansfield with my hubby the next Friday. I could hardly get down the mountain and at the bottom, I was in tears. My chiropractor diagnosed ITB syndrome. I have been battling a chronic sciatic/piriformis injury for a year and a half. Just when I thought I had fully recovered, this new injury popped up. And, of course, my sciatic/piriformis started ... Tue, 2 Nov 2010 16:43:01 EST Excited but.... taking it slow!

I've had two really good runs lately with no pain!! And I participated in the Relay for Life - 10 hours of walking. I was a bit sore afterwards but not in pain!

I'm not pushing it or going for any land speed records. I'm back to running the C25K schedule. I'll start week 3 this week.

Today I ran 4.10 miles on the treadmill, 5 minutes warm up and a 4:1 interval. It felt good to be moving again and not have to think about "does this hurt"... Mon, 11 Oct 2010 18:23:36 EST Message Removed Message Removed Wed, 29 Sep 2010 10:43:58 EST Physical Therapy for me! I went to a Sports Medicine doctor today for my injured hamstring and he said I torn it at the worst possible place you can tear your hamstring. The good news is that I will heal, but the bad news is it's going to take a long time! I start PT next week and can't wait to get better! I will keep everyone posted! Thu, 2 Sep 2010 21:55:44 EST cautiously optimistic Well, I ran today and the foot was ok. Not great, but I could deal with it. It's still pretty tender, and I think it made me run funny - I feel a bit sore in places after today's run! I guess maybe I was overly tense due to being scared of what would happen.

The foot feels no better or worse after the run than before. I iced it down good afterwards, and I'm still doing lots of stuff with it in the evening (contrast bath, icing, night splint, stretching). Hopefully I'll learn how to... Tue, 31 Aug 2010 17:15:11 EST Major setback Just when I started to make progress recovering from my stress fracture, my body fails me yet again.

I was working at a camp last week and severely sprained the ankle/foot I had injured this winter. My x-rays were negative and I was put in a splint. After a week on crutches, I got my walking cast today and am going to be in it for 3 weeks.

Needless to say, I'm really, really frustrated. I'm doing the best I can to stay positive, but it's getting harder and hard to do as ... Mon, 30 Aug 2010 22:15:13 EST Injured again! So last Saturday (8/21), I did a 10K trail's the same trail I've run several times before with no problem, but the way they had us do it, we started where I normally we did the route in reverse, basically. About 3 miles in, I started feeling the pain the outside of my left knee (before, it had been the outside of my right knee), and after alternating walking with running for about a mile, I had to resort to walking the rest of the way. IT Band is yet again injured. ... Fri, 27 Aug 2010 07:11:31 EST doozy of a knee I had blogged about it, but since I still can't believe it...

bone bruise BEHIND the knee cap
runner's knee
titlted knee cap
knee cap tracking issue

all of these issues summed up post MRI. i got the final word on the bone bruising on monday morning. walking only for 3 months. i need to find joy in that, but i am still bummed. thanks for listening. Thu, 26 Aug 2010 23:01:33 EST metatarsal stress fracture & the shoe I'm wearing Hi everyone-
I just saw the doc last week and like I suspected, I have a stress fracture of my 2nd metatarsal, probably as a result at least partially of me subconsciously changing my gait because of my plantar/heel spur issues.
Anyway, I am in a little post-surgical bootie/sandal and it does not seem to be all that great in limiting my toes/foot from bending. Has anyone else worn this type of boot? Anyone else had a similar injury and was outfitted in a different device?
I am ... Mon, 16 Aug 2010 12:19:52 EST GOOD NEWS!!! I hesitated to start a new topic, but I have something worth celebrating. I had an appointment with my orthopedic surgeon today. He said I can start to RUN again! Very S-L-O-W-L-Y of course.

I know there will be aches and pain along the way, but it's so good to know that I can begin running again. I'm so hopeful that it will work out. I'm going to take it very slowly, and I'm going to take another 5 pounds off or so, before I start -- this should put me in September. The Doc was o... I'm here in part because I've gained weight after tearing my meniscus in two places and having lost most of the cartilage in my right knee. I had surgery in early April to repair the meniscus and create more cartilage by a procedure called microfracture.

Because I'm an emotional eater, I was always able to keep the pounds at bay, because I had running to balance things out. Well no more. I've been a runner all of my life, so not be... Sun, 1 Aug 2010 23:00:20 EST Disgruntled Knee So I have twice tested my knee. I've been cautious. After every run I am feeling something. Nothing excrutiating. But something. I do not know if I should, as a precaution, ask for an MRI to be sure there is nothing in there/unknown...or just super super ease back in to running. Last week I did walking only. This week I attempted running, just a few days early than what the sports med doc said. But very short periods. Twice this week. Maybe I need to try once a week only for a few weeks? <BR... Now its blah in black for the next 5 weeks. I am down to walking with one crutch, so that makes me happy. I went to the gym today and stopped by PT and they adjusted the crutch for me. Start PT tomorrow, but there is not much I am able to do. Dr. does not want me to rotate the ankle yet. I am only flex and point. Maybe do the towel thing and pick up marbles...The summer went by pretty fast. I go back to work in 3 weeks.
... Mon, 12 Jul 2010 13:21:10 EST Fit Sense FS-1 speedometer I have a Fit Sense FS-1 speedometer with a watch and a shoe pod that I have had for some time. When I first began using it years ago it was incredibly accurate. I hadn't used it in some time but I got it out, changed the batteries and recalibrated it on a 400 meter track. But when I run it is considerably off on mileage and speed. Does anyone have one of these? Any ideas on what I might be doing wrong? And if I can't get this properly calibrated, it may just be too old and I need a new speedo... Sat, 10 Jul 2010 12:13:17 EST July Chit Chat Hello everyone,
Hope you had a great 4th of July. We were at Hutchinson Island in Stuart, Fl and had a wonderful time with family. It is always fun being with my sisters. I have been a runner for 2 years, but have had a lot of injuries, in which I had to change sports to biking and swimming. Outdoor running is what I love and want to get back to. I just had surgery on my tendon in my right foot. Have a cast until July 8 and then a boot for 4 weeks. I will start PT when I get my boot on.

I am so glad there is a time for someone like me, so other can understand how it feels like to be helpless.

Trying to stay positive ... I think I am on the road to recovery, having been given the okay to start walking again this week. I had to stop running on March 15th, when the PF just got the best of me! I continued to walk, but at the beginning of May had to stop that. On Monday, I received a pair of orthotics and an okay to start the walking again. Hopefully if all goes well, I'll begin to run in July.

Through it all, I learned that I have one leg shorter than the other. Fri, 4 Jun 2010 21:17:24 EST Recovering from IT Band I recently just go t back to running 100%, but it took about 6 weeks to tod it. I used the Foam roller and stretching. I here because it seems I go good for 3-4 months and then I get injured - I am sure its from overuse.

good luck to everyone!

Fri, 4 Jun 2010 18:51:27 EST Capsular sprain, Morton's neuroma - update In my intro, I talked about the foot issues I am having and had questions about my rigid shoe and boot. I had my follow up visit with the sports med doctor and he was happy with my progress. I am to stop wearing the boot and start wearing regular shoes. If after 2 wks, my foot is okay, then I can start using the treadmill (he actually preferred I jog or run, but said walking is okay too) for 15 minutes every other day, no incline. If after a week to ten days, I am still okay, I can start i... Thu, 3 Jun 2010 10:44:41 EST Knee Maladies I was diagnosed with Runner's Knee the day after Mother's Day. I do not know if my gait change (due to calf cramping in the heat during my HM) started it all the weekend prior.

After several weeks off, I have not found improvement. I'm hoping and praying that this group isn't a good "fit" for me though. LOL I haven't been to a doctor for my knee issues and unless bones start sticking out of my leg, I probably won't go, but.....
