SparkPeople Knee/Hip Replacement Team Messageboard A great team for help, support and information for people who have had or are facing any type of joint surgery (knee, hip back) SparkPeople Knee/Hip Replacement Team Messageboard Tests say one thing, the surgeon says another At the beginning of Jan/21, I finally got a phone interview with a surgeon. Based on x-rays from Aug/20, he said he doesn't think I should have surgery yet on either my left hip or left knee, but believes my back may be causing more of the problems. I was so discouraged. A bone scan in Oct/20 showed severe loss of cartilage in both joints, but the surgeons apparently want to refer to x-rays. I'm not sure what shows differently. He gave me a standing order for cortisone to each joint every 3 m... Tue, 2 Feb 2021 03:33:39 EST Newbie at K/HR Hi. This forum may be just the kind of support I need right now. I was glad to have found it this morning when, once again, pain is wracking my body, robbing me of sleep. On July 2/20, I suddenly found myself unable to weight-bear on my left leg, but x-rays didn't show anything of concern. It wasn't until Oct 19th when a bone scan revealed that I have no cartilage remaining in both the left hip and the left knee. By this point, I'd gotten to the point of needing to use a walker all the time a... Mon, 23 Nov 2020 06:50:48 EST Hello .... THR cancelled due to Covid-19 Hello all ! Now I'm back (at least a year later) and am working with Doctor that I like a lot. I'm facing replacing both knees and one hip. I want to educate myself about the whole experience before proceeding. I know that I want to lose weight first. My Doctor says that I have some time to work on this. Got cortisone injections in both knees earlier this week. Thu, 22 Jun 2017 13:35:21 EST Hello Hi - my name is Jineane and I live in western Canada. I have had both TKR (left - Sept 2013 & right - Feb 2014). Both these went very well and I was pain free for about 2 years. Then my right hip started to act up. X-rays showed arthritis and I will be requiring a hip replacement sometime in the future - surgeon says I need to loss a whack of weight first. So I go to the pool and walk to keep mobile. I met my goals and left several years ago and in that time got heal spurs and then found out I needed both hips replaced. I had put up with the pain from one hip for 5 years and the other for 2. It seriously affected my exercise level and weight started creeping back on me. When my mom started needing more help to live at her home I decided I should get them both replaced so I opted for hip replacements 4 months apart. I think this may have been a mistake from what... Sat, 18 Mar 2017 01:32:35 EST Hello Hello all, I am new to the forum. I have had double hip replacement right in Oct 2015 left on Sept 2016. I was lucky enough to have anterior on both so recovery time was minimal. In about 2 weeks I was driving and walking with a cane when needed for stability. I'm 58 and relatively fit. I ride horseback and was unable to ride for the past 2 years. If anyone is considering hip replacement I highly recommend it especially if you can have the anterior method done. Tue, 24 Nov 2015 07:48:09 EST ANTERIOR HIP REPLACEMENT Has anyone had this type of hip replacement where the surgeon goes in through the front instead of the side or rear? No muscles are cut during this type of surgery and recovery is supposed to be much faster. When one gets down to kneel on that knee/knees, is it such a abnormal feeling? I tend not to do it because it just doesn't feel good, even with a pillow. It feels like a long metal pc. is in there that goes vertically. So I'm stretching my back more with weeding, etc., to avoid getting down on my knees. I will put up with it though, because of having a knee that feels so good all the rest of the times!! I just wanted your input on the... Mon, 6 Jul 2015 11:23:04 EST Summer 2015 pool - NOW open!! Tue, 30 Jun 2015 08:14:04 EST Knee is loose Has anyone else had this problem. I had the original TKR on my right knee in July of 2009. By 2011 it was really loose you could move it back and forth very easily. I returned to the original surgeon who did a revision by adding a thicker spacer to the knee. I noticed in 2013 it was starting to loosen up again have waited until to do something about it. Had a consult with one ortho who agrees it is loose on the inside of the knee. So on the 30th of this month I go to see his partner to see wh... Fri, 12 Jun 2015 08:49:18 EST After THR Question I have been experiencing the slight numbness and tingly feeling on the side of my thigh caused by the surface nerves that were cut during my surgery. Today is one month since the surgery and I was wondering if anyone else had that sensation and how long it lasted? I had a breast tumor removed almost 5 years ago and they cut the nerves under my arm to check my lymph nodes at that time. To this day I still have that sensation like tiny little bugs running under my armpit when I shave it. I was ... Wed, 1 Apr 2015 19:34:40 EST Joined Team A While Back But..... I'm glad I took the time. My surgeon no longer does both knees at the same time. He presented his reasoning to me and it made sense. As much as I would like both knees fixed NOW I can wait and do it in stages. Scheduled surgery on Left Knee for April 7 --which is 7 weeks from now. Lots to do to get ready. I was given my list of exercises. they are pretty much what I am cu... Fri, 13 Feb 2015 17:00:32 EST 4 things I'd like to do with my new knees For those of you who have had TKR: There are 4 things I used to do that I would LOVE to be able to do again. I would like to know if you think these things are realistic:
1. Long hikes in the woods. I had to give this up years ago as knees too unstable for the steep downhill climbs.
2. Elliptical. Thu, 12 Feb 2015 08:49:11 EST Introduction to Team Hi. I am glad I found this team and hope it will be a good source of encouragement and support. I have chronic osteoarthritis of both knees. The pain, crunching and popping began in my teens. I had an active childhood and teen years participating in track, cheerleading, gymnastics, marching band (lots of long parades on hot pavement). This took its toll on my knee joints, specifically the patella-femoral compartment as my knee caps did not "track" well. Probably due to lots of activity but no... After being nagged by friends and family, I finally agreed that something other than aging was wrong with my knees. I received a diagnosis of moderate to severe osteoarthritis in both knees, with bone on bone in right knee. The odd thing to me is that I have very little pain at this point--just a lot of stiffness. I have started PT and know that I need to lose weight. The ortho doc recommended injections when I do develop pain. I'd like to find out more about... I am glad to meet everyone. Sun, 10 Aug 2014 13:35:37 EST Need a new hip next year, a new body this year Hi I'm Lori I have over 100 lbs to lose and if that's not enough I need a new hip next Feb or Mar. I broke my left hip in Feb this year and had it repaired. The way the bone broke the doc could not do a replacement, just a repair to let it heal for a year then do a replacement. However, in May I had my right hip replaced. I have osteonecrosis, which is a big word for dying bone. Both my hip bones have lost some blood supply, so the bone is dying and deteriorating. I had 1/3 loss of bone on th... Tue, 27 May 2014 09:44:16 EST Looking at both knee replacements. Hi, I'm Beth. Went to see the surgeon for the first time today and he said both knees need replacing so it's dealers choice which one we do first. The left is in worse shape and pops a lot but the right one causes more pain. He said he doesn't operate on x-rays just people, so I'm thinking I'll do the right one first then he'll do the left three months later. I raise and show dogs, so this will put me off my game for a while, but I am looking forward to moving the dogs more easily around ... The Xrays that I had done on my left knee this past week showed that there is extra bone growing in the joint where bone should not be. It's called Heterotopic bone (HO). This bone grows in soft tissue sometimes when there is trauma. Trauma I had since my knee broke and the TKR was due to instability of my knee. My knee and leg are always swollen. I'm having one knee done. There shouldn't be any problem, should there, with flying back to Idaho for Christmas? That would be about 6 weeks post surgery. It would mean an hour drive to Indianapolis (by shuttle), a couple of hours in the airport there (I'd get a wheelchair), 2-1/2 hours in the plane (I'm thinking maybe first class?), another hour or more in the Salt Lake City airport (another wheelchair), then an hour to Twin Falls in a puddle jumper. Fri, 28 Sep 2012 18:08:21 EST Hi I am new Hi all! I am new and just started SparkPeople this week and lost 5 pounds! I just found this team and was excited because I am scheduled for TKR on Dec. 10th. I had my other knee done in 2009 and bounced right back from it, so hoping I will do the same with this one too. Too bad I didn't use those 3 years better and lose some of this weight. Oh well! Time to move on I guess. I am still very nervous about the surgery. I appreciate any support I can get. Sat, 22 Sep 2012 18:08:31 EST Any suggestions? Hi all - I know this isn't a place to go for medical advice but I didn't know if anyone might have some ideas for me. I've been cleared by my surgeon to do "whatever I want" (which I don't totally buy since he gave that to me 2 months after each surgery). I had total knee replacement of my left knee on June 28th, 2011 after enduring pain in both knees for over a year (pain started after 5 months of chemo for breast cancer mastectomy last summer... not sure if chemo drugs had anything to do with knee problems?).... Anyway, tried "putting up with the pain" at first, then tried physical therapy , then "chicken shots" (supartz) in both knees... nothing helped, and so had the replacement.... was in hospital for a week, within three ... Sat, 13 Aug 2011 22:06:10 EST Pain in Thighs Hi..I'm new to SP and had both knees done a year ago on June 15th. I still have pain in my knees, but mostly just above in my thigh area. I was wondering if anyone else has had this same problem. My x-rays were great and my surgeon does not see any reason for me having this problem. Wed, 10 Aug 2011 09:09:06 EST frustration I am 8 weeks post op from a partial right knee replacement.. I am finding progress very slow and becoming extremely frustrated.. I am having a big issue with my bend.. I have apparently developed lots of scar tissue in the front of my knee that doesn't want to break up. He is giving me a couple more weeks to see if things improve.
... Mon, 20 Jun 2011 19:32:50 EST Hi my name is Kathie i had my knee replacement a year ago April.
