I'm new to the Team and BRAND new at kayaking - haven't even been on the water yet! But I love water and I love being outdoors. I'm fortunate enough to live in a community with a marina and I also have a nature park just down the road. Lots of places to kayak as I'm near the coast. I would love ANY advice about what kind of kayak to get and how to start out! I'm 55 and still overweight, but very active and doing well on my journey (down 44 pounds since July, 124 overall p... Thu, 23 Feb 2017 09:34:02 EST Kayaking family of 3 Hi, I'm the mom of two boys, ages 8 & 9. A few years ago we attended a free kayaking seminar at a local state park and enjoyed it. We then rented kayaks several times before buying our first kayak marked down to $98 at a local WalMart we then added a second one from Academy and then my husband bought a demo model Hurricane Santee for for my birthday last year so we now have three and we kayak on the local bayous around here. We live in north Louisiana so lots of places to explore the only ... Wed, 24 Sep 2014 14:15:05 EST First kayak experience Hi my name is Darlene. I am new to this group and new to kayaking. Me and my boyfriend and his family when kayaking yesterday. I had never been so it definitely was an experience for me. Was really shocked when the driver told us it was 5 miles and that we had to make the whole trip they wouldn't be able to pick us up in the middle. We were in single kayaks, which I have heard is better than a double. I had a lot of fun. Body will be very sore today I am sure. Once we figured out how to paddl... He's got me all ready to jump in the boat and get going, but we are not even out of January yet!!!

Anyhow, I own a Jackson Cuda 14 Fishing Kayak. Thu, 2 Jan 2014 11:56:01 EST Hi there Hey all...I'm Kate, 24 from Michigan. My dad introduced me to kayaking when I was 12 and I fell in love. I've been kayaking ever since. My dad and I actually built the boat I currently have when I was 16 (and intend to have for a very, very long time). It is the Pygmy Arctic Tern with a hard-chine hull. It's a beauty at 17 feet long! I wish I had more time to enjoy the sport and get out and experience new places. Most of my adventures have taken place around the Lansing, MI area except... Tue, 17 Dec 2013 16:13:16 EST Anyone familar with Necky Vector 14' sit on kayak? Am going to get rid of Hobie 13" with Mirage Drive & Malibu Mini X 9' kayaks. Both are sit on. I need faster kayaks. The Hobie is only ok on open water but a bear when you can't use Mirage Drive. I'm getting older and need kayak easier on body. I really like sit on. They can be handy in Florida waters. I'm really leaning towards the Necky but would love feed back from anyone who has owned one.

Thanks! Unlike sea kayaking, white water is by definition social because you simply cannot do it alone safely, ever, except perhaps at a park-and-play spot or on a designated slalom course where there are onlookers, and even that is risky. ... It was exciting, heart-warming, exhilarating, just all around wonderful. It also included kayaking around a bird sanctuary in the bay. My daughter and my niece were in a kayak together. My daughter was gung ho, my niece hesitant. They paddled over to a huge manatee and baby. They stopped paddling short of the pair - but the kayak d... Not surprisingly, most models also perform better for men than for women, due to several physiological differences. While some paddling schools report equal or greater numbers of women in beginner classes, the male/female ratio among those who stick with it is 3 or more to 1. There are many reasons for this attrition, but I believe one relates to the design of today’s kayaks.

Newer models have reduced this ... Mon, 3 Jan 2011 09:38:19 EST Hi Everyone! I've always loved kayaking (usually on vacations) and finally bought one in Spring 2010: A 10' 11" Necky Manitou Sport. Hope it picks up a bit more.

Thu, 20 May 2010 16:58:43 EST How NOT to paddle! Thu, 22 Apr 2010 12:40:07 EST Waiting for water in Northern Ontario Hello Spakie Paddlers!
We are sea kayakers....white water is not my thing, but I have done it and enjoyed it. For whaterver reason, I get more of a rush in a 5 foot swell than in rushing white.
As you can tell from my location, we still have ICE! Boo Hoo. But we've been getting ready for the season with a bit of cross training with running (ok, jogging - we're doing our first 5 K May 2) and swimming.
We live on a little lake and are out in our boats as much as possible. Last ye... Thu, 8 Apr 2010 20:14:15 EST Greetings from Little Elm, TX Hi all! I am a lover of the great outdoors. One of my requirements when relocating from Michigan to the Dallas area was that I had to live within WALKING distance of a lake. Well my hubby and I lucked out. We found a house that borders the Army Corps of Engineers property around Lewisville Lake. (Most lakes in the state of TX are man-made and the surrounding property is owned by the ACoE allowing for lake level control and public access.)

So I bought a kayak late last fall. ... Tue, 2 Mar 2010 00:21:28 EST Happy New Year! I'm running behind as usual but wanted to wish everyone a Happy New Year! It's been below freezing here since the beginning of 2010. Fri, 30 Oct 2009 16:41:37 EST Experiences so far... Well the first time I went kayaking I didn't realize the seat was rubbing into my back and I ended up with a huge bruise! So I bought a seat cushion and that solved the problem nicely. :)

The second time I went I missed some areas with the sunscreen and ended up with some painful burns! Another lesson learned!

Today we went out and boy the water was rough and it was so windy. It was a battle to move against the waves and current. We ended up at a little beach and en... Sat, 17 Oct 2009 21:13:36 EST Hello from Florida! Hi! I'm kind of new to kayaking. A friend introduced me to it over the summer and I fell in love with it. I borrow one of her kayaks and we paddle around the Gulf off of west central Florida. Sat, 17 Oct 2009 21:06:57 EST From Fatass to Badass... :-) I had lots of fun last weekend trying WW kayaking in class III rapids on the Moose River in the Adirondacks.

iver/detail/id/3590/

The river is recommended for beginners at 3 ft.

It was at 3.5 ft on Saturday and 4 ft on Sunday. I made it through without dumping once on Saturday in a big old Dagger that I felt like I could barely steer. On Sunday I switched into a smaller Jackson 4Fun which was a lot more maneuverable... Wed, 7 Oct 2009 10:44:00 EST I did it! I rolled once!!! Mon, 21 Sep 2009 19:27:00 EST Favorite Kayaking Destinations Hello,
I'd love to hear about recommended destinations for paddling. My favorites are pretty much anywhere on the British Columbia/Vancouver Island coastline and my favorite mountain lake is Maligne Lake in the Rockies near Jasper, Alberta.

I've heard that Baja is wonderful. Any recommended outfitters? (Have yet to figure out how one flies with a kayak!) Mon, 21 Sep 2009 13:40:01 EST Kayaker from PA Hi
I really enjoy being on the water. After wanting, for so long, to take up whitewater kayaking, I finally did it. I took a class, joined a club in my local area and bought a used pyrahna. I'm 211 right now and the boat is rated up to 230. So I obviously have some work to do this winter. Went out on the water today, came back and entered in my time on the cardio. According to sparkpeople, in 2.5 hours I burned about 2000 calories. This just doesn't seem right. While kayaking is great exercise, I just don't think that is possible. If it is, then I'd need to eat a lot more today than I did! Sun, 21 Jun 2009 16:51:24 EST Hello from Syracuse, NY Hi, I'm Jaycob, I live in the Syracuse, NY area. I'm a bit younger than many of the average kayakers around here (turned 25 end of April) and have been paddling for about a year on an Oldtown kayak. Central New York is a great area for flat water kayaking, with tons of lakes and a large canal and river system. Tue, 28 Apr 2009 18:04:15 EST New Member - Folsom CA Top of the morning... what does one actually put down on this. I guess my interest in kayaking actually started when I was a kid at summer camp, but over time it was lost to video games and girls. Until yesterday it was recharged into a furry I can't even explain.
I went with my wife to an event that REI put on for kayaking and I really had my doubts about going in the first place. I didn't want to get wet, I didn't want to flip over, etc, etc. But for those few hours I was like a kid a... Mon, 27 Apr 2009 15:11:34 EST Excited about getting started I have been interested in kayaking for a while. I've done some reading, and research, I've talked to friends who use to kayak etc... However, I have yet to get my feet wet. That is my goal this summer. I just want to kayak. I'm not into extreme kayaking at this point. I would just love to have a boat to take to the lake/river and glide along. I would love to visit Pudget Sound and take a whale watching, by kayak, guided trips. I love to be on the water and while I enjoy river rafting,... Thu, 19 Feb 2009 14:47:45 EST Training/ excercise focus? I am going to be learning to kayak this spring/summer and in order to get prepared for it I am wondering what excercises or activities or strength training I should be doing to get ready for this. I haven't had the time to paddle much in the past couple of years. I live right on Spring River and am only 4 miles from Twin Bridges Recreation Area. Anyone else here from the 4-state area? Mon, 5 Jan 2009 00:27:18 EST Anyone use a satellite Personal Locator Beacon? I really wanted to get the SPOT satellite PLB. It will call for emergency help giving your coordinates to responders. I think it's a great idea for safety reasons. Many times we are out of cell phone range and have no way of getting help if we need it. I also go out on my own a lot. The SPOT also sends a check in message to let people know you're ok, as well as a "need help" message that is for situations that aren't life threatening. I almost bought one last night, but instead came home and ... Do you work out at home or at a gym? What programs keep you moving? Fri, 14 Nov 2008 08:33:48 EST Yesterday's Kayak Race I was a saftey boater for a 3 and 6 mile race yesterday. Weather was sunny and warm for November but VERY windy. I felt bad for some people having to paddle against the wind at the end. Everyone had a great time- there were even 13 women this year- much higher than normal. Unfortunately, it marked the end of an era since the sponsor, one of our local kayak stores/rental facilities is going out of business. Sat, 28 Jun 2008 12:46:33 EST New in Indiana Good Morning to All!!! Greg here, and while I've been a SparkPeople for 11 months now, decided to join the group. While I have limited kayak experience, I have a beautiful boat (check by pictures on my SparkPage). I built this boat in the spring of 2000 and it paddles like a dream. I also have a strip-built canoe about 1/2 done, and hope this group will inspire me to finish it. Later, Greg Fri, 27 Jun 2008 09:13:14 EST What did you see today paddling? I went out on a 3 hour paddle this morning. As I was headed out to the river, 3 ultra-light aircraft in a "V" formation flew right over me. Sat, 17 May 2008 16:13:32 EST I'm Off!!! Woo hoo!! Sun, 27 Apr 2008 20:53:55 EST First time out this year Today was my first time out, it was in a rental boat. But at least was out on the water. It was also the first time I was ever on a class 2 river, the water moves alot faster than onthe other rivers I have paddled. It was also the first time I have ever flipped a kayak or even a canoe. Looks like today was a whole lot of firsts for me, haha. Hopefully the next time I am out it will be in my own boat. It's probably been about 5 years since I've been in it, last time I saw it the plastic had gotten a dent from something leaning on it in storage (thru the heat , no doubt). I hope there aren't a colony of mice living in it. ;-) It's a Necky hybrid type, large seated cockpit, with a fin.

I'm in the beginning stage of a complete Self Overhaul and recapturing the passions I had when I was super fit 10 year... Wed, 9 Apr 2008 11:50:23 EST Exercising to get ready I was wondering what conditioning everyone does to get ready for the season? I have been trying to get my Pilate's routine in 2-3 times a week to help with flexibility. I need some nicer weather to help with motivation! 67 Fri, 21 Mar 2008 07:30:11 EST Any Paddling Plans for the Weekend? Any paddling plans for the weekend?

If the weather holds, I'm going to go for a paddle on Saturday. I'm not sure where I'm going yet, but somewhere! 30 Thu, 20 Mar 2008 09:22:29 EST Not a kayaker YET! Hello! I thought it might be a good group to join because learning to kayak is actually one of my goals/rewards for losing weight. I have been in a canoe once (actually several times being that is capsized) and a row boat a few times. I really love the water and have wanted to learn for a while. I even convinced my husband to try it with me (he is not the adventurous type). Hopefully this group will be willing to answer my questions (even the lame/obvious ones).

Loren Tue, 18 Mar 2008 16:49:19 EST Adirondack Kayaker Hi, my name is Melissa. My husband and I just got into kayaking about 1 year ago. We have Necky manitoe's and we love them. We have not gotten out as much as we would like, but are hoping to make this a better year. I have been trying to get in more Pilate's to help me be more flexible and increase my arm strength before we hit the water. I am very excited to find this team and I look forward to getting to know all of you. Thu, 13 Mar 2008 19:40:29 EST yakkity-yak hi, i'm another paddlin' fool, tho not as much as i'd like to be. about a year ago i finished building my Pygmy Osprey - it was my first boat-building experience and it was so worth it. i think she's lovely to behold and handles well even without a rudder. anyhoo, i live in washington state and even tho the weather is pretty mild i just haven't taken the yak out as much as i should. hopefully reading about other peoples' adventures will help inspire me! Mon, 10 Mar 2008 09:43:05 EST Jersey kayaker Hi all! I do most of my yakking in the bay here in Jersey, with the occasional trip to my Dad's house, where we yak in the Susquehanna River. That is always the most fun, you never know what you will see! Once we found a car in the river, nose pointing straight up, that had gone off an embankment. We called the police, luckily the already knew and noone was hurt in the accident. We have never quite been able to top that! Tue, 26 Feb 2008 10:36:02 EST My new surf boat Just got her in today! I cant wait to hit the waves. It's a Murky Water Reaction- Weighs just under 19 pounds with the outfitting. Its 7'6' long- cant remember how wide but my big butt is pretty wedged in there! With my new Dry Deck I will be able to enjoy it in the cold weather without getting wet or cold (well, exept my head and hands).
I am so excited, this is the first boat I dont have to share with my husband!!
Happy Paddling,
Paula
Mon, 25 Feb 2008 20:48:45 EST Getting New (used) Kayaks! Hi everyone!

I'm so excited and have to share my good news.

I'm buying 2 kayaks from a local outfitter, after hearing about their sale in their quarterly newsletter.

They're Current Design Solstice GTXL & GTHV, one is a kevlar and the other tops with white bottoms, 17.5'.

These are kayaks that I would likely never buy for myself brand new. But, I'll tell you, what a sweet deal buying used and from a reliable source.

... Sun, 24 Feb 2008 12:34:26 EST How do you get your kayak to the water? I am curious the best way to get a couple kayaks to the water. We bought a large pickup last year cuz they fit in the back. Now between gas prices and just how little we need a truck except for kayaking... we are considering trailers or roof top packs.

chime in and tell me your way! I am sure we can all use an idea or two.
Mon, 18 Feb 2008 14:11:34 EST Great paddle today I just got home from an oyster roast/paddle weekend. We had a great time- lots of food and fun last night and a 9.64 mile paddle today. Temps in the 60's, strong winds but nothing major on the river, not a cloud in the sky either! There were plenty of places to challenge you with fallen trees but good current so there was no chance of getting tired. Other than the fire ant hill I sat in at lunch it was a perfect day! Think Spring!!!
Paula Sun, 10 Feb 2008 19:41:18 EST Hello to all! One of the reasons I've involved myself with the Spark is to continue my Kayaking. Hard to row when you exceed the weight limit of your kayak. I have the good fortune to live close to the shores of the Chesapeake Bay. Miles and Miles of water ways to explore. Fri, 25 Jan 2008 23:53:26 EST Reccomendations for tandem? Hi

we are thinking about getting a tandem so we can really go together when we paddle.

Can anyone reccomend one they have or have used?
We are recreational paddlers, no fancy stuff, no white water.

I know it might be a while before everyone reads this but I can wait!

Amy Wed, 23 Jan 2008 07:06:41 EST Ohio Kayak Newbie! I am a surf kayaker in Wilmington NC. I do very little flat water and have never been in white water. Surfing is such a small sport- anyone else out there??? Sun, 13 Jan 2008 18:44:41 EST Are canoeists allowed? I live in the Nashville/Cookeville area and am fairly new to SP. I'm a whitewater open boater. Have been paddling about 4 years. There are not too many of us, so I have to crash kayak groups. I had a baby about a year ago and have about 10 pounds that keeps hanging on. Since I don't get to the river as often as I'd like I'm trying SP to get it together again. Sat, 11 Aug 2007 21:17:14 EST Take Me to the River/la ke/ocean etc! Fri, 27 Jul 2007 00:07:12 EST New to SP and a flat water kayaker Hello! Kayaking on the weekend is a great escape and exercise for me. I live in Vermont and have enjoyed the ponds and lakes. But my favorite so far is Kayaking in NY. I have an Old Town Loon, 10' and love it. As far a tipping, only once in 2 years. I guess I should tip more to remember what it feels like. 47 Fri, 20 Jul 2007 09:07:04 EST New WW Kayaker Howdy all!

I started ww kayaking this June and love it! I'm in California, near the South Fork of the upper American. As I spend more and more time in Coloma, I'm realizing how fortunate I am to live near rivers people cross oceans to kayak.

I changed my lifestyle about 2.5 years ago and I've lost about 60lbs. Wed, 18 Jul 2007 11:24:59 EST Paddled once, rowed a lot Hey all,

I joined the other team called "Paddlesports" but there doesn't seem to be a lot of activity there... so I thought I'd say hello here. I'm primarily a sweep rower but have kayaked once in intercoastal waters at Edisto, SC and would like to do more someday.

Hoping you kayakers will welcome a cousin "paddler" to this team.

Heck Sun, 1 Jul 2007 10:16:06 EST Introduction Hello everyone, my name is Sarah. I joined SP on June 3rd so that I can take charge and adopt a healthier life style.

I have only been kyaking twice. Once on a river. Once in the ocean near Catalina. I loved it. I really want to start kyaking more so that I can work my upper arms. All the exercise I do concentrates on the lower body. Tue, 19 Jun 2007 00:22:54 EST Anyone Paddling? I am so itching to get out paddling...but I haven't invested in a dry suit and it's waaay too cold in these parts.

I willing to live vicariously through others for now though! Wed, 30 May 2007 14:38:55 EST First Kayak trip of the year Ok, I live in the north so this weekend I got to go kayaking for the first time since October. It was great. We went down the river (5 minutes from our house) in our small single kayaks. It was beautiful. Then we went to a small lake and taught our puppy the joys of kayaking, it was a lot of fun. He is a natural, I think.

Anyway, I missed it so much and just wanted to share with you my first kayaking trip of 2007. Anyone else? Mon, 7 May 2007 15:03:05 EST Exercises for Kayaking Last year, when I first started kayaking, I noticed that I would have some shoulder pain after a day at the lake. This wasn't muscle soreness so much as it was a feeling that I had overworked my rotator cuff. With warmer weather here and a return to the kayak soon, I'd really like to avoid these problems this year.

First of all, has anyone else here experienced this? Secondly, do you have any specific exercises you do to get in shape for kayaking? I have a feeling that the more I b... We are just unsure of the different precautions, techniques needed for ocean kayaking.

Thanks for the help! Tue, 24 Apr 2007 11:26:14 EST Taking along water Anybody have a really good method for taking along water? Last year we had a soft-side insulated bag we filled with soda and ice, I don't drink much diet soda anymore though. Maybe we just need a bigger cooler system.
Wendy Wed, 18 Apr 2007 08:00:07 EST New Hi everyone,

I'm Deb. Live in Louisiana, and am new to kayaking. Hubby bought me a used kayak about a year ago, and I loved it from the beginning. This Christmas I bought him a new one. I've taken mine to Arkansas when we went trout fishing last April. We have no kayak instruction anywhere near us, so I just take mine on calm water. We have lots of lakes in our area, and that's just fine with me. Beautiful days, warm breezes, and exercise. So peaceful and restorative. <BR... Sun, 25 Mar 2007 15:52:48 EST New Kayaker.. ...Dirigo 120 It's great to find a kayak Team on this site. I am from the Dallas area. Thu, 31 Aug 2006 10:36:25 EST Kayaking forum Hello and thanks for joining this group. I'll introduce myself with my first kayaking experience. I was 50 years old the first time I went out in a kayak. My daughter and I were at the beach and went on a moonlit cruise at 9pm in the Roanoke Sound in the Outer Banks of North Carolina. I think it was a full moon but laced with clouds. It was 5 of us, 2 guides and 1 other experienced paddler that went along for fun. All girls. After we'd been out about an hour, we noticed lots of horizontal lig... Thu, 31 Aug 2006 08:49:17 EST
