SparkPeople Newly Diagnosed Diabetics Team Messageboard A place for new diabetics (others welcome!) to learn to navigate through the ins and outs of diabetes, and what you can do to improve your health, lower your blood sugar levels and meds. SparkPeople Newly Diagnosed Diabetics Team Messageboard Does Fat Diet Cause A1c increase? 5.5 to 7.5 Can eating without fats as much as possible (margarine, mayo, lean meat, etc.) and the resulting weight loss cause the A1c to increase? Does it cause the liver to break down fat and kick out sugar instead? Thu, 30 Jul 2020 07:04:51 EST What to eat what not I am so confused. I am trying to create a better meal plan but I am nervous that it is not going to work and I am going to be forced to go on meds. My goal is to control it so I don't have to depend on meds. Thu, 4 Jun 2020 17:58:13 EST Help...vegan or vegetarian meal plans? Hi, I joined like two or three weeks ago, but had a bunch of medical stuff going on, so haven't been able to stick with this at all. I recently found out that I am diabetic, so I am trying to change my diet and lose weight BEFORE my doctor tries to put me on more meds, which I don't want, or even worse, before I have to deal with needles, which I just can't do. When I filled out that really long questionnaire, I answered that I eat vegan and vegetarian meals, but I don't see any of the meal p... Mon, 30 Sep 2019 07:06:14 EST New Here My name is Angie, and I used to be on SparkPeople years ago. It's changed around a lot, and the food tracker looks different. I just found out that I have diabetes, and I am looking for meal plans, not to track food myself. I remember before they used to ask questions like, do you want low salt or low fat, then it would generate meal plans. I can't seem to find that now. Like how to make special meal plans for diabetes, for example, does that still exist? I can turn the meal plans on and off,... Wed, 11 Sep 2019 07:22:13 EST Hello Diabetes It happened. After years of being pre-diabetic and not heeding the warnings, I pushed my body over the edge during the holidays. My blood results came back in the diabetic range and now I really do have to lose weight -- like140 pounds.

My doctor emailed me the results and sent in a script to metformin, but I sent her an email asking if I could try diet only. My fasting glucose was 158 and A1C was 7.3 or 7.5. (I'll have to go back and check.) She wants to see me again in 12 ... I will some times c gain 2-3 pound a day. any ideas, how do you know what weight is right thanks Sat, 29 Sep 2018 12:31:11 EST Glucose Higher After Exercising I'm so frustrated & discouraged. I am newly diagnosed & just got my first glucometer yesterday. I've already tested myself 3 times. At the doctor's office about an hour after eating my glucose was 129. Not bad. I didn't eat the rest of the day & tested myself before having a late dinner: 136. Strange as I didn't have anything to eat, but I don't yet fully understand how my body trends & cycles. This morning I work up & took my glucose again, 157 after having eaten 7 hours ... Thu, 30 Aug 2018 09:40:00 EST Should i worry alot about my blood work results? So I got my results back and from what I see the normal range is 3.5 - 5.5 mmol/L and my levels were 16.8 mmol/L. I haven't talked to my dr yet abut how bad should I be concerned as I apparently have slightly elevated RBC, AST, HDL Cholesterol and very elevated Hemoglobin A1C. Mon, 16 Apr 2018 04:58:10 EST Sweeteners Ordinary white sugar ... well except for when you are diabetic, not that bad. Although, like all over processed things I tend to shun it because it is so far removed from nature due to over overprocessing.

Honey ... its natural, the bees make it, it has to be good. Well from a diabetics point of view it might as well be pure sugar, its not much different. Sat, 6 Jan 2018 04:15:43 EST Metformin Metform is a drug that makes your own insulin more effective.

Insulin is a hormone your body produces in the pancreas, and it releases insulin in an effort to lower blood sugar (high blood sugar is not good). So it rescues you from high blood sugar.

In type-2 diabetics the cells that listen to this hormone have become desensitized to insulin, and don't listen. So the blood sugar keeps floating around and gets too high. Metformin helps you get blood sugar out of the blood... Thu, 23 Nov 2017 21:53:38 EST help please I believe my diet is where it should be. 1000 to 1200 cal per day, protein 60- 100, carbs 30 or below, I tend to eat the same things. Thu, 19 Oct 2017 09:25:47 EST Steroid-induced diabetes Hi there,
I've had insulin resistance due to PCOS for a really long time--almost two decades. Until last year. I herniated my L5-S1 disk in my back in July of 2015, and since then, I've had three rounds of epidural steroid injections, two rounds of oral steroids, and I'm set to start a fourth round of ESIs at the end of October. As a result of all these steroids to control my back pain (and it's still not completely healed yet), my insulin resistance has tipped over into steroid-induced ... Tue, 3 Oct 2017 15:59:56 EST The absolute basics With nutrition there can be information overload.

How much protein to eat, but not too much. What about carbs? Isn't fat too high in calories... etc. etc.

----------
But the absolute basics, when you want to get your blood sugar under control, and probably loose weight too, is to cut carbohydrates way way down. Sat, 12 Aug 2017 02:00:27 EST Eating Protein Eating protein is more of a balancing act thsn you might think.

The recommended daily amount of protein is something around 60 grams:

ein-per-day/

Yes it says 0.36 grams a day for each pound of body weight. Mon, 31 Jul 2017 10:46:11 EST Eating Carbohydrates It is recognised that carbohydrates raise blood sugar, and that is a problem for diabetics. I'm thinking about type-2 diabetics in this post, who produce insulin, but somehow not enough to keep blood sugar under control.

There are a few ways to lower blood sugar:
- medication to make existing insulin more effective
- exercise to burn off the carbs and make muscles less insulin resistant
- eat fewer carbs, but eat things that provide calories but with less, or no bloo... Mon, 31 Jul 2017 02:14:57 EST Hi Hi there. I'm Chrys, 37 and was diagnosed with type 2 on July 27. So yeah not good. just a few days ago. I spent the last couple days trying to get things in order and figure stuff out and breaking down more then my fair share. I am lucky I have a friend/sister who lives with me who seems to be more then willing to help me figure stuff out. It's funny. I am overweight but I actively watched my sugar and stayed away from them as much as I could, even eating sugar free breads and everything ... Sat, 29 Jul 2017 13:09:42 EST Fibre I follow the philosophy of Dr. Fuhrman, he's a vegitarian, and I'm not, but one of his ideas is this:

HEALTH = NUTRITION / CALORIES

It quantifies the saying "make your calories count". Now sugar has no nutrients, and is pure calories, so it scores the worst. But other things can be compared. My favourite is vitamin C, where green peppers have about 4 times the vitamin c (per calorie) that oranges do.

A fuzzy equation, but it can help make your choices.
... Sat, 22 Jul 2017 11:14:14 EST Working night shift and new baby. I would the night shift and really struggle with my eating and my exercise. All trackers go from midnight to midnight and my life just doesn't work like that. I struggle with snacking at night since we have a candy/snack bin. My husband is newly diagnosed diabetic and I am likely on my way to becoming diabetic, it is just a struggle with my work shift and a 6 month old baby at home.
Wed, 19 Jul 2017 05:30:06 EST Hi The doctor says I have crossed the magic line between pre=diabetes and diabetes and I see him in a month and talk about meds. So I am buckling down and taking this seriously, more than I have before. Just coming here and writing this is making it all very real. I know I need help being accountable and finding a friend or two on this journey would be great. I swim an hour every day now, that should help as well as the dietary changes I am making. I've taken the first step of what is going... Tue, 11 Jul 2017 20:19:06 EST Intro Well, it was a matter of time, but I am diabetic. Genetics suck, but to be fair I am a rather big boy, lol. I am nervous about this new change in my life, but I have a good wife, and a strong support structure here, so I will get on with living my life, this is not an end, but a beginning. Fri, 30 Jun 2017 22:17:54 EST Dexcom Has anyone started using this for continuous blood sugar monitoring? I am going to start using it in a week or two, but I am curious if anyone has had experience with it. Sun, 25 Jun 2017 01:26:24 EST Why me? What now? When you are first diagnosed with type-2 diabetes it can be an emotional shock.

Why me? Why now? What about everyone else that eat like I've been eating, and they don't have type-2 diabetes? Yes it seems unfair, and it is.

Well type-2 diabetes is a progressive issue. Your insulin rescue mechanism (to save you from high blood sugar) slowly fatigues, and an an arbitrary line in the blood sugar "sand" you officially are type-2. But ones body has a range of how well it contr... Sun, 5 Mar 2017 13:03:47 EST Metformin - some information Metformin is a drug that makes existing insulin more effective. It does not cause the pancreas to create more insulin, it works with what is already produced.

Metformin makes cells, both lean cells like muscles, and fat cells, more receptive to "listen" to the insulin and absorb glucose from the blood stream, thus lowering blood sugar.

The half life of Metformin is about 6 hours. So its effect is within that time frame, in other words almost instantly. Since its effect i... Thu, 2 Mar 2017 08:59:44 EST Maximizing nutrition There is an interesting idea by Dr. Fuhrman, who wrote the book "Eat To Live", and indeed there is a SparkPeople group around this.

My deviation from Dr. Fuhrman is that he is a vegetarian, and I most certainly eat meat. Indeed I think it takes some work to get your protein when you are a vegetarian. How do you stick to the spark calorie range if you eat low carb? Sun, 18 Sep 2016 21:23:08 EST Picking Me UP AGAIN GOALS This is a journey .. in my case a long one ... releasing my weight isn't about eating or exercise only. I am taking Metformin and injectable insulin at this time, my primary care provider is hoping to get me off the injectable insulin, and I do to. Not that injecting myself is really that horrible becau... Thu, 9 Apr 2015 12:47:08 EST how are you treated? When I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes no one seemed at all concerned about it. My endocrinologist just gave me some scripts , did blood tests, took vitals and sent me out the door. No dietetic councelling, no books, no information, nothing. I ended up injecting .2 insulin all month instead of 20 so my blood sugar remained sky high all month. I did not know any better! My husband doesn't seem the least concerned about how I feel or what this is doing to me. I can hit a low blood sugar star... Mon, 16 Mar 2015 08:08:38 EST I am doing a little better I am doing better with my carbs count. I have two portions of milk per day and no more than two portions of carbs in the form of sweet potato and brown rice. I rarely eat fruit, but am starting a bunch of free veggies or non starchy veggies. I am learning to not eat any carbs at night. My blood glucose was 231 today instead of my normal 254.

I get an average of around 60 carbs per day if I am successful in following this eating plan.

I vow to go to the gym at least tw... Thu, 12 Feb 2015 15:54:20 EST Kicking myself I was diagnosed with pre-diabetes a few years ago but thought I could beat it with diet & exercise but that never happened. About 6 months ago I started having trouble with my vision. Finally my eye Dr. ordered a fasting blood sugar which was 273 and my a1c was 10.1 now I have type 2 diabetes.

I am mad at myself for not taking care of myself sooner to prevent this from happening because I knew I was at risk being 100 + lbs overweight, having a family history, etc.

I a... Sat, 29 Nov 2014 06:41:41 EST Hi, I'm Sue I just joined this team, and it looks like there's a ton of support and great information here. I got some lab results back that show me in the diabetic range: A1C 6.6, EAG 143. I guess it's not just a fluke, because I had a similar result about a year ago, but the doctor I had then didn't make much of it (I don't think she was very good!).

I'm feeling kind of scared and down about it. Thu, 28 Aug 2014 19:38:34 EST Hello :) As of this morning I have been officially diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. No surprise to me, I've known this was the case for some time now.

I've begun educating myself and figuring out from my readings what dietary approach works best for me, and for now I am going low carb. Unfortunately grains of any kind are causing spikes, so my dr. agreed that it's best I avoid them for now.

I'm beginning my regimen of Metformin tonight, with one 500mg pill and will continue that... I was diagnosed Type2 about 6 weeks ago with a critically high A1C (was 15, now 13) and cholesterol. Doc has me on a severe diet until A1C and cholesterol get to safer levels: very few carbs (no rice, pasta, potatoes, bread), 1-1/2 fruits per day, lean meats, lots of veggies. But, she also wants me to gain weight since I'm at the very bottom of my recommended weight range and BMI. The Metformin curbed the weight loss and constant hunger occurring at the time of diagnosis.

I ... Mon, 19 May 2014 15:30:38 EST Can we do a challenge? I really don't see any challenges posted on this team and was wondering if we could do a challenge. I was thinking something like how many miles did you bike, walk, run etc. this week or it could be a fitness minutes challenge. Just a thought! Wed, 7 May 2014 18:16:37 EST Hello I was diagnosed last week. I'm trying to find a way that this isn't so, but I got my blood glucose testing kit today, set it up, and did my first test. My mother was diabetic, as were all her sisters, and I have been caring for a diabetic loved one for several years, but I thought I had escaped getting the family disease since I had made it all the way to my 70th birthday diabetes free. Mon, 24 Feb 2014 18:48:24 EST Does taking Metformin mean I am Diabetic? I was told it was to help make it easier for me to loose weight. All I heard was pre-diabetic, but people at work have told me that if I am on Metformin than I am diabetic. I was told by the registered diatician that I should check my blood a couple times a week to see if I can find a pattern of what elevates my blood sugars. Now I am not sure if I need to test every day or get a new doctor. Wed, 2 Dec 2009 20:36:41 EST I'm new here My name is Heather. I am a first time mother-to-be, due on Valentine's Day. My pregnancy has come along well, until yesterday when I was told I have gestational diabetes. (As if being pregnant, having a husband laid off from work for 2 months now, and having a close uncle dying of cancer wasn't enough to deal with.) Anyway, I want to keep my GD under control with diet and avoid having to use medication and figure I can be most successful by goining this group. Tue, 6 Oct 2009 23:36:07 EST It finally happened to me So, I am now a diabetic. I did not heed the warnings when I was a pre-diabetic. I was at first quite angry with myself for allowing this to happen. It is all because I basically have worshipped food instead of using food as a fuel to live healthy. I have no one to blame but myself. So I took a day or two to be angry and pity myself. Now, I am done with that and ready to start setting goals to lose the weight and thus reverse this dreaded disease. I have a choice. For that I am thankful. Not e...
