SparkPeople Runner Girls United Team Messageboard New here :) Hello! I am not new to sparkpeople but new to the team. I've been running for quite a few years but have decided to try and tackle a half-marathon. I have done 2 in the past, but not for quite some time, so I am a bit nervous.

Thu, 7 Mar 2019 10:43:55 EST Has anyone gotten a sweat rash under their girls? This just started and I believe it is from sweat? just surprised it started after all this time.

Hopefully someone has some insight as this team looks deserted? Thu, 15 Mar 2018 12:46:00 EST braving the rain I've seen some of my neighbors running in the rain (something we get a lot of here in Washington) and I can't help wonder. My feet get wet WALKING in the rain. Let alone running. Do runners have special shoes in the rain and snow? or do they just go for it? Hello!

I am really interested in making some friends on sparkpeople. I used to use myfitnesspal but they only give you the option to add friends from your facebook page or email list. I want to make some friends who are in a similar boat that I am. I don't really want to tell everyone I know that I am struggling with my weight and attempting to get a handle on it. I feel like the community on here is just a little less judgmental.

So add me if you would like! And we can ... Mon, 28 Jul 2014 16:45:18 EST Hi Everyone! So glad to be here! I love to run, love doing races (when I can get myself out the's HOT out there right now!), but seriously need help with motivation to stay on track with my running. I can't seem to get any consistent training going.

I'm signed up for a half on August 31st, but the way my training is going, I definitely won't get the PR I was hoping for! If anyon... Hi,
I realise this is a bit sensitive but I figured this would be the best place to get an answer! Recently, when I've finished my longer run I've noticed that I have chafing just underneath my breasts. Its not too sore and I don't notice it when I run, but I'd like to prevent this from happening if possible. Do you have any suggestions? Mon, 31 Mar 2014 10:17:39 EST Hello Hi I am Robyn. I am on a long slow journey to lose weight. Last summer, 3 years after I gave up running in pregnancy, I returned to my beloved sport. However 2 stones extra mean i am a much slower runner now than I ever thought I would. My last 5k in November took 10 minutes longer than my first in 2006. I am now right at the start of training for a 10k. My goal this time is to run the whole race, however long that takes. My question is simply who else has had this, what did you do to relieve pain and how long before you were able to resume running?
I am... Sat, 15 Feb 2014 09:36:09 EST HI! Hi, I am training for my first 5k in May. I am working on those 5k training plans here on SP and will be walking my first 5k sometime this week. I was wondering, does one need to take rest days immediately following the "race?" And if so, for how long? I started out doing couch to 5K, and really fell in love with running. Due to several injuries (one requiring surgery) I'm not as far along in my running as I'd like to be, but am working towards a goal of running 10K. Now to just survive the winter without an injury! Tue, 28 May 2013 20:24:28 EST Armageddon Ambush Orlando Looking for someone to run this with me! Tue, 28 May 2013 01:12:32 EST Foam rolling Does anyone do foam rolling? I am going to buy one soon I think, and would love any tips/advice/YouTube videos, etc. :) Sat, 25 May 2013 22:56:46 EST First 5k-CHECK! I ran my first 5K today with a friend and finished in 27.52min. She finished in 27.51mins and won a 3rd place medal for our age group. Ugh, if I had just been one step faster....! :) It was a cold, windy morning but both of us who are treadmill runners ONLY were amazed at how quick and easy the race was. Once it was over we commented that we felt like we could run it all over again! Hoping to find a 10K in our area soon. Sat, 25 May 2013 13:32:33 EST Running/wanting to lose weight I'm 5'7.5 and about 129#. I'd love to lose about 5 lbs but am having a lot of hunger mid afternoons following my runs. I run early, at 5am prior to my kids waking up. Admittedly I don't eat well in the morning b/c I am ridiculously busy trying to feed my two kids and get us all ready after exercising. I often eat 3oz carrots and 2 TBSP of peanut butter in the afternoons but I don't always feel satisfied. To be honest I never really feel "full" unless I'm having a carb and a fat/PRO.... usuall... Wed, 22 May 2013 20:40:09 EST Hello! Hi everyone!
I'm a 40-something woman who has been running for a couple of years now. I just recently completed my 4th half marathon, am thinking about a marathon, and am currently between races. As I'm between races, I thought it would be a good time to focus on my weight loss goals as I find it really hard to train properly for races while dieting.

I am looking forward getting to know every one. Mon, 13 May 2013 10:26:54 EST Favorite brand of running shorts? I typically run in capri-like pants in warmer weather. I'd like to get a few pairs of shorts this year, but I am having trouble finding some that don't ride up. Any recommendations? Sat, 11 May 2013 09:40:49 EST Progress! I went out for a run on Thursday, and I ran the 3 miles faster than I have since before my kids were born! Super excited! Fri, 10 May 2013 16:40:03 EST howdy do.... I am new to spark people so I am having trouble figuring out how to post etc. I have been a runner for 15 years and still love it. I just ran a half marathon and am thinking about traveling to florida to run the Biggest Loser Half Marathon on Dec. 29th. I'm not sure, it is a very long way to travel from Ohio. Thu, 9 May 2013 20:47:38 EST Hi everyone Hi,
I'm brandy. I have had an on and off again love affair with running, but right now I'm back at it. Just did my first 5k this morning in 3 years and the running bug has officially bitten me again. My name is Emily and I've finally started running regularly, after training for and finishing a half marathon (walking) two weeks ago- my first ever! My next race is the Dirty Girl Mud Run in Scranton- I'm meeting some friends there and we're making a girls weekend of it. After that, my focus will be on training for a 5k in July and trying to run the whole thing. I also like Zumba, swimming, yoga, and weights. :D Sat, 27 Apr 2013 21:51:50 EST Just... EXCITED! I just wanted to say I'm so excited because I am running 15 minutes at a time now. I have no pain or anything for the first time in a couple of years. I think I will chalk that up to shortening my stride and increasing my turnover. I'm over the moon, girls. SO EXCITED. I've been trying to get back into running for 2 years, and this past month or two has been fantastic. It is taking patience, but I am so hopeful! Fri, 26 Apr 2013 13:40:21 EST hello fellow runner girls :) i am definitely not new to spark, but new to this team and to actually calling myself a 'runner'... i had always considered myself a slow, chubby jogger who aspired to be a runner. but since i'm running 4 days a week, training for a half marathon in october, and racing a 10K this sunday, i am taking the plunge and finally calling myself a runner :)
anika Thu, 25 Apr 2013 09:50:43 EST A Newbie both to the Team and Spark People Hi Everyone,

I'm 39, wife, mother of one and work full time. My son runs competitively, my husband took up running because we were "there anyway" and they finally nagged me into it lol. My trainer set me a goal to work up to 40kms a week and do it consistently by September. I'm currently up to about 30-35 kms a week but this includes race walking.

I have three goals at the moment. 1 to run 5kms without needing to take a break at the halfway mark. I've been a runner for a long time, but since my daughter was born 8 months ago have only been on a few runs. She absolutely HATED the jogging stroller and would scream bloody murder the entire run. Now she is big enough to sit without the car seat and she can have some snacks, so as soon as I'm over this cold I have, I will be attempting a short run. Hoping to get her used to it. My last race was when I was 20 weeks pregnant with her - over a... Wed, 17 Apr 2013 11:36:04 EST Running for Women by Kara Goucher Just wanted to recommend this book to anyone wanting a little motivation!

Kara Goucher is an Olympian, but she is SO relatable. She has gone through and recovered from so many injuries that she makes me feel so motivated to overcome any little setbacks along the way.

The running advice in the book is solid (I think), but really it is her stories about her journey as a runner that had me hooked. I actually read this book cover to cover.

Mon, 15 Apr 2013 12:38:30 EST New to this team Hello, all! But they give me nothing to measure against.

I'm new to running, started with the Couch to 5k program in September, did great on that program, repeating a few weeks if I needed to, around November I got bad shin splints, I tried taking a week off and then running again but they were still there.

I took off... Wed, 20 Mar 2013 10:24:41 EST Shin Splints? I am fairly new to running. I completed my couch to 5K program and am running about 9-12 miles a week. However, I am starting to experience a lot of pain on the inside of my lower leg. It starts above my ankle and goes half way up my calf. I am assuming this is shin splints but not sure what to do about them. Anyone have any suggestions for stretches that can make them feel better. It is so bad I am probably going to have to skip my run tomorrow :( Any suggestions would be greatly appr... Thu, 7 Mar 2013 10:45:13 EST Shoe Recommen dations? Hi all,
I'm training for my first half marathon, and for the most part I'm loving it! But my feet HATE it. I'm completely flat-footed and run in minimalist shoes (which have no arch support, since I don't have arches), but every time I increase distance or speed, I get horrible painful blisters towards the front of where my arch should be. My feet adjust and the blisters heal after a while, but then I increase speed or distance again. Are there better shoes I should be wearing? Some kind... I started running back in the summer but was never able to really get going due to extremely sore calves, morton's nueroma, shin splits from hell and then it got dark. I was working full time until 12/31 when I lost my job. Any way with the new year and a little more time on my hands I have started running again. I have started with the C210K program. Hey there all you running females,

So I just started running full time this past summer, was training for a 5k which I ran in the fall. 29 minutes dead was the end result. Since then I can't stop running, it's like my favorite thing to do. My favorite type of runs are Zombie Runs where I use an app called 'Zombies, Run!' on my ipod. It's like being apart of a story, so much so I sometimes forget I'm getting exercise. I run basically everyday, after work on the week days (can I also... Wed, 9 Jan 2013 21:45:22 EST Hello! Hi there, I am just starting to get back into running. It has been about 4 years since I had any sort of running routine. I ran in HS, in the Army and during Police training. Looking back I have always been happiest and healthiest when I ran. This is why I have chosen to get back into it. I signed up for a half marathon in May but hope to fill in between now and then with a 5k and 10k. I do two 3 mile runs a week and one hour long run (not so long yet:0)) as well as zumba and some strength tr... Mon, 7 Jan 2013 11:29:15 EST Howdy New to the group, sorta new-ish to running. Sorta because I've come back to it after running for many years as part of my job (retired military). But now I enjoy it again and am looking forward to stretching my legs, literally. Have worked up to a 5K and am looking towards the 10K mark because I signed up for the AF 10K in Sept, lol. Generally following a walk/run method because it helps my knees and all my runs so far have been on the TM. Hope to transition to the outside starting next week!... It was hot and muggy when I ran and I made sure I had my water bottle with me and some chews. I drank at every mile. I didn't want to get dehydrated. After I finished, I cooled down, stretched and felt good. Then I went to drive home. By the time I got home, I had the shivers with the heat blas... Thu, 30 Aug 2012 11:28:02 EST Knee Pain..ouch! My knee has recently started hurting while I run. It quits when I quit. Any advice on how to get out of this funk? It is really messing with my intervals! I don't know what's going on, but last time (two weeks ago) I ran thru the pain it cost me a trip to my chiropractor. I don't know what I'm doing wrong. Wed, 29 Aug 2012 08:39:47 EST Treadmill versus Outdoors I have been running really well lately and improving quite a bit. Today I had a PR of 30:29 for 3 miles....however this was on the treadmill. When I started running in January this year I was running outside--never on a treadmill--and it was much more difficult. However with a change in my schedule and many more things to do, the only time I have to run is after dark, and I refuse to run in the desert at night. No thank you! Thus, I have switched to the treadmill, but I feel a little cheated ... Mon, 20 Aug 2012 02:53:11 EST Cross Training Question I'm having trouble getting my heart rate up while cross training. I used to bike and get my heart rate up to 140-150. Now that I'm running, when I bike my heart rate usually only gets up to 110-120. I guess that means I'm getting in better shape, which is great, but it leaves me feeling like I'm not getting much of a workout. When I run, my heart rate is usually between 145 and 160.

Wondering how all of you get a good workout on non running days? I know I could increase gears on my... So I want to get back into it I just need some accountability. No excuses! Thu, 2 Aug 2012 18:02:10 EST Pace Improvement? Hey all. I've been running for about 4 months and in that time I've seen my average pace drop from about 17 min/mile to 12:30 min/mile and my distance climb from 1.5 miles to 6 miles. My name is Andrea and I am a runner! :P

Last summer I started running purely by accident - I was out for a walk using the Adidas miCoach app on my phone. I thought I was doing a walking workout, but the silly thing kept telling me to speed up. So I started running, hoping to prove the darn thing that it was wrong. Ten minutes and almost a mile later and I was in love with running! I didn't think I had it in me to run for even a minute, nevermind ten!

I stopped running aw... New to this team but looking forward to "runner girls united". I have been a runner (slow but steady) since 2000 when I ran my first marathon (Nashville Rock n Roll). I currently run around 20 miles a week with my focus more on 10k's rather than marathons. I have 10-15 lbs. to lose and do believe running is keeping me in check but more importantly I now "enjoy my runs rather than endure". Thanks in advance for your support. Last spring I was at my peak while training for a half when my shinsplints got too painful and I had to stop. This month, I started for real and just ran... Wed, 23 May 2012 11:23:18 EST breathing Hello, I'm new to this team. I have been running since March. I went through a 5k app on my iphone and got to where I ran 30 minutes. I have since changed my approach and follow Jeff Galloway's run/walk theory of running. I am having a hard time figuring out the best way to breathe. I follow 3/3-inhale 3 steps and exhale 3 steps and do ok most of the time. But, I still do struggle sometimes. I am concentrating on diaphragm breathing, but have read "breathe deeply" AND "breathe shallow"... Fri, 18 May 2012 00:41:44 EST What do you do on days when you are not running? I have recently started running again, so am trying to run no more than 4-5 days per week. My biggest problem is staying motivated on days that I don't run. When I run in the morning, I feel great and tend to eat well all day, but on days that I don't run I tend to overeat and don't feel so great. What do you do on your off days and how do you stay motivated? Wed, 16 May 2012 15:56:14 EST Just started running again Hi all. I used to run when I was youger, thinner and more fit. Am just now starting to run again -after a difficult pregnancy (including 3 months of strict bedrest) and a pretty sedentary life caring for twin babies. Its a lot more challenging now that I am older, heavier and out of shape, but it is already making me feel great. I don't have any running partners where I live, but am looking forward to having some virtual ones here at SP 213
-Kathy Wed, 16 May 2012 15:38:56 EST Texas Runner Hello! I started running 3 years ago. I have completed races from a 5 miler to a marathon. I cooled off on my races to just enjoy running and am looking forward to ramping it back up. I also just got a puppy so many of my usual runs have been replaces by walks. One day she'll be a runner too! Tue, 15 May 2012 12:57:36 EST Personal protection during TOM I know that there's a thread regarding running during TOM, but my question is a little variation: What do you do for heavy days? I went out for my run yesterday, and after maybe 4,5 steps, I felt that horrible feeling that let me know my tampon didn't hold up. I cut it short immediately and walked home the shortest route possible. So, what works for you? Any particular brand of product? I hate putting off my training because I'm afraid that I'll end up with major leakage / dripping. Thu, 10 May 2012 13:04:20 EST New Desert Runner Hey y'all my name is Lorena. Wed, 29 Feb 2012 19:44:44 EST New team member and new runner Hello to the team!

I'm a beginning runner who's about to begin a painful phase two -- outside running -- and I would love support to keep me going.

I had worked up to two consecutive miles on my treadmill in the last 7-8 weeks, but this past weekend, my treadmill gave a death rattle and breathed its last, a frustrating turn of events as I was only just in the last few weeks getting to a point where I enjoyed my workout and looked forward to it.

This morning, ... Tue, 28 Feb 2012 11:25:57 EST Hydration on the Run...PLEASE HELP! I am so desperate!! :-\ Ok now that I got that out....

What in the world can I do, or should I do.... I have gone through 4 yes FOUR bladders in less then a year for my camelback! My 4th one just went yesterday so now I am stuck on what to do!

They keep getting holes in them. Nothing is in the camel back, or anywhere near them when it happens. Mon, 27 Feb 2012 10:21:33 EST Running Changes Lives Got this from a friend on another team so thought I would share!

ry/SA-Woman-Wins-Jefferson-Award-for-U
nusual/N4lcjnvNfk-SttQ2vpg3lQ.cspx
Sun, 19 Feb 2012 15:42:51 EST Hi I'm New to the team :) Hi there everyone.... I've been a runner for a while, on and off. But I've been running regularly since last summer and have up until a week ago been training for a 10K. Then came some knee trouble, mega pain every time I walked up and down steps. Ouch! Now I've been advised to stay off long runs, well anything over any mileage that hurts. This all means I'm not doing anything more than 3miles at a time.

Anyway I love running and am hoping to back running some longer and faster ru... Sun, 19 Feb 2012 11:48:55 EST Starting Corrals I've never run an official race don't know how this works. I don't know how fast I'll be running in an official race. If I registered for a 5K and set my predicted time in 2 hrs, I understand I'll be placed in a certain area, or corral. What is the purpose of setting corrals? Can't I still run past slower people in corrals before me? Just don't see the meaning behind dividing people in groups. Is this just for starting and once you cross the start line, you can then go as fast as you want re... Sat, 18 Feb 2012 14:08:24 EST New to the team, kinda new to running. Hi there! My name is Ulana and I started running winter. I did the C25K training plan and ran my first virtual 5K April 2011. I have run several more virtual races since and now I am training for my first 10K. I will have my first real road race (5K) on March 18 and my 10K road race is May 13. my running buddy and training partner is moving to Nfld. and this has prompted me to seek out other runners. It has been awhile since I have been on here and now that I am 9 months pregnant, I figure I would need the support of this group to help me lose the baby weight and continue to get my motivation to keep running. I am still running and I have ran through my entire pregnancy! This has helped with me to keep my weight down and my sanity through all these changes in my body (can you tell it's my first? 30
I need advice from all you past and present mommies on how soon a... Mon, 6 Feb 2012 13:18:25 EST Virtual run for Sherry Arnold 2/11 I just wanted to let everyone know about the virtual run for the missing Montana mom, Sherry Arnold. Hey runner girls!

I'm hoping there is someone on the team from the Upper Peninsula. Particularly from the Marquette area. I'm in desperate need of a new pair of running shoes and I'm looking for some suggestions as to where to purchase a good pair. With so few "specialty" shops in the area, I'm looking for some insight into my options.

Thanks in advance. And happy running. Thu, 2 Feb 2012 12:01:06 EST February 2012 Mileaege Challenge Thread! Wow. Where did January go? Here in the Northeast, the weather has been pretty agreeable to running outdoors and I've done my best to get out there as much as about y'all? Altho February is historically not the most fun Winter month, and one where I usually wish I was somewhere warmer, let's hope for more good run days!

What's your goal mileage for this month? Post here and cheer others on as they work toward their goals as well. If you're new to this challenge, ... Mon, 30 Jan 2012 19:50:04 EST Help! Knee Pain -- Possibly Runner's Knee? I have been having pain in my knee for the last week or so.

It gets worse after I have been sitting down for a while -- especially after a long run earlier in the day -- and when I stand up and bend my knee there is a sharp pain around the knee cap.

Putting an ice pack on it seems to help, but only temporarily.

Does anyone have any advice on how to go about recovering from this injury and how to continue training once it's feeling better so it doesn't happe... Mon, 23 Jan 2012 17:01:01 EST Help! Strenth Training And Long Runs I have two questions I would love help with.

1. I just started strength training, and I am new to it. I have been running for a year and a half. Additionally, I'm starting to up my long runs for a marathon I'll be running in May. SOOOOO, how do you handle leg work? I'm assuming I should not be strength training my legs the day before or after a long run. Is that enough? What should I know? My program has me doing leg work twice a week.

2. I'm starting to incr... Sun, 22 Jan 2012 18:04:36 EST A Big Hello From SoCal!!! Hi! I used to hate running, but now I can't get enough of it! My boyfriend's mother inspired me to get serious about running and on Thanksgiving we ran the Causelife Turkey Trot together. I finished in 30.07, a time I am very proud of. I have increased the distances and durations of my runs and am up for a bigger challenge, so I signed up for my first half marathon this May...I am so excited but also very nervous! I welcome any advice from more advanced runners with experience running long di... Sun, 22 Jan 2012 02:13:58 EST Running jackets all that? Cross posted in rookie runner group.

Hi everyone! I have a gift certificate to Lululemons and wondering what to get.

It is for $50

I have a ton of shirts, 2 tights, 2 capri's, 2 skirts and a bunch of shorts.

I also need to buy a hard hart (horseback riding) and the type I have to have for regulations is over $150 (ouch)

So.. Thu, 19 Jan 2012 17:19:35 EST Hello from the UK Hello everyone, I thought I would give jogging a go to help me lose weight and keep off what I have lost so far, I walk a lot so breaking into a jog won't be too much of a problem, I hope! At the moment I have a cold which has turned into a chest infection so the jogging sessions will have to wait for a day or two.
Tavy

Tue, 17 Jan 2012 06:06:41 EST New to Spark I have been running for 2 and a half years. I have lost about 100 pounds and have 20 more to go. I ran 2 marathons last year and am totally addicted to it. Just wanted to introduce myself. Fri, 13 Jan 2012 17:04:19 EST A sad reminder - BE CAREFUL I don't know if any of you have heard about the case of a Montana woman - Sherry Arnold who went missing during a morning run last Saturday. Unfortunately, they've just confirmed that they've found her body. She is from a very small town that has recently seen an increase in traffic and crime due to oil drilling. The only evidence they found this week was one of her shoes in a roadside ditch. They'll be releasing more info this afternoon but it looks like she was abducted from the truck route... Fri, 13 Jan 2012 16:29:40 EST New to SparkTeam Hello! I've run off and on for many years. The first half marathon I seriously trained for and ran was on Thanksgiving in 2010, since then I've only done 5Ks but I plan on signing up for a couple HMs this year. I plan to keep running well into old age! Thu, 12 Jan 2012 11:06:37 EST HAVE YOU HUDDLE TODAY? If so, what medication has helped you?

I have good runs and very bad runs (like today) where I just cannot go anymore! I have the rescue inhaler, but that's it. Some days I push through it and come out great, but other days, not so much. I have a real hard time increasing my speed...symptoms always seem to kick in. Before our move 2 years ago, I was about an 8 minute I'm lucky to get it aound the 10 minute miler (and that's rea... Mon, 9 Jan 2012 12:41:29 EST Hello there! What a great team! I have been running for about 4 years now...started primarily due to a hypertension diagnosis. Then it became my sanity! The last 6 months has become the season of races for me, and I brought my husband on board! Our first race was the ATM in Oct, where we lost 15 minutes on our time due to my bladder! He won't let me forget that! I must not let that happen again! But it's fun. I enjoy it, I crave it, need it! Love to run! Sun, 8 Jan 2012 22:02:33 EST Great Ap for Runners/Walkers I found a great Ap called Runkeeper. It's free and I used it for the first time today when I went for a walk with my Husband and dog. It tracks miles, time, calories burned (though I don't think that part is very accurate as it does not know how much I weigh), average mile pace etc. I really liked it and plan to use it when I start training for my 5k in March. I work for The Salvation Army and am a student working toward a BS in Psychology...3 classes to go! I have never been an athletic person, but always admired runners for their strength and endurance.
