(For those with Spinal fusions) Team Messageboard Newbie Hi All...

I'm brand new to this forum and just wanted to introduce myself. My name is Suanough (Sue-Anna, it's Irish) and I have had 7 spinal fusions. Starting in 2002 with L-4,L-5 and traveling up each year to finally end with T10 in 2010. Of course, lots of arthritis and now I have begun to have Bursitis in both hips (recently both were replaced). This is what is causing me new pain, it's very hard to walk more than 100 steps. Not sure what to do but I think I'll have to see an O... Thu, 11 May 2017 13:46:45 EST Thanks for the welcome! I am having c-4, 5 and 6 fused in a few weeks (long time coming) and am nervous as a cat on a hot tin roof about it.

I've been doing supplements and eating Whole 30. Found out that way that a lot of the headaches the doctors were attributing to my neck were actually food allergies. Still, I have lost some function in my right arm and hand, not to mention the unrelenting muscle spasms.

Wouldn't hurt me to lose 20-30 pounds so figured I'd buckle down and get on with it. An... Fri, 17 Mar 2017 22:29:25 EST Hello everyone! New here. I've been on SP for quite a while, but I'm relatively new to this team.

I'd like to see a discussion tree, where folks recommend dos and don'ts prior to and following surgery where they:

* Talk about their circumstances: age, height, weight, lifestyle
* Conditions that led to their surgery
* Kind of surgery they had
* What they personally did prior to the surgery (e.g., lost weight, limited their exercise and how, etc.)
* What ki... Tue, 10 Jun 2014 18:33:14 EST Should I get another Cervical Fusion Hi, I have never discussed my neck pain, because I am always talking about my back pain and the rod implant. I had my very first surgery in 1970. After losing all feeling in my right side of my body, from face to leg and foot, I knew I had something serious. From being healthy and never having an x-ray, I was rushed to the best doctor's and top hospital for Orthopaedic Surgery
and was operated on for Cervical Fusion. Back then they shaved your hair off and gave you so many drugs and ... Sun, 4 May 2014 11:33:02 EST New to the team - Had two surgeries before Fusion Hi, my name is Sindia. I have been a member of SP since Oct 2013 but just found this team. I previously discectomy and laminectomies on my L5 and S1 in 2000 and 2004. I had my fusion from L4-S1 May of 2013; first posteriorly then 5 days later anteriorly. I am having alot of difficulty dealing with the lingering pain. I am also having alot of difficulty getting pain meds to work properly, my pain management doctor is supposed to one of the best in Phoenix but sometimes I feel that he does not ... Thu, 1 May 2014 10:12:46 EST Lower tolerance to cold after ACDF? I was just wondering how many of us have become less tolerant to cold weather after their fusion/s?

I have a lot of metal in my neck and since my last surgery, if I go out into the cold without my neck and upper chest covered, I get a lot of pain. Does anyone else have this issue? I told my surgeon and he said he has heard that from others.

Weird. Thu, 30 Jan 2014 09:50:41 EST Is this team not very active on SP? I was just wondering how active this team is? Thu, 28 Nov 2013 02:54:57 EST Blackgoddess333 Hello Spark friends I am new and afraid but want to do this so bad;for me. Mon, 21 Oct 2013 15:59:42 EST How do you I have a 4 level lumbar fusion. I can do most things fairly well. But I have a tough time putting on socks. Yes, I have a sock puller, (I can't find it at the moment) but I didn't like it that much. Tying shoes is a bother too, but that is easily remedied with the right shoe. Sandals work fine but it is coming up fall again. I get up 5 mornings a week and go to the pool. If I put on socks then I have to take them off and put them back on again. Yikes! Last winter I solved the problem... Sun, 6 Oct 2013 20:20:54 EST Another Newbie Introduction Hello Everyone,

My name is Linda and I am a new member here on SP from the Houston, Texas area. I just found and signed up with SP on Monday because I desperately need to get my life back on track.

I tend to have a really, really self image, bad body image, confidence image, etc., and have slunk into the hermitous (is that a word?) background of this thing we call life over the past year. I have limited physical abilities due to back issues and am not able to do what... Thu, 2 May 2013 12:57:58 EST Acupuncture, Reiki and More Hi Everyone,
It's been a while since I've posted anything here.
I'm curious as to how many of us have tried other wellness practices to manage pain or discomfort. Recently, I've developed severe pain in my hip area (which might be from my lower back) and runs down the sides of both legs, greatly affecting both knees. Like many of you, I have a spinal fusion, with hooks. long rods, pins the works....
I returned to acupuncture but this time with a new acupuncturist.
While... Sun, 28 Apr 2013 12:20:30 EST Recipe Exchange Having just graduated from culinary school, I am all about recipes and food. I didn't see any other topics that had been started that is similar. These obviously wont be "back" related, but it might give us some ideas and "spark" our interest in trying new things. Thu, 21 Mar 2013 14:10:09 EST New to "All Screwed Up" Hi Everyone! I am 42 and had C5-C6 fused in 2008 after a few years of pain in arms/neck after a fall. I have had problems ever since and docs say I have chronic pain/flare ups that I need to learn to get through. Any sudden motion can cause pain so living in a rural area with bumpy roads is kind of like torture some days. I avoid many things I use to enjoy like playing volleyball with my daughter, running, etc. So I have packed on the pounds and it's time to wake up, get this weight off a... Tue, 5 Mar 2013 15:57:30 EST My name is Tonia Baker Hi, my name is Tonia Baker and I am 65 years young, married 30years to a wonderful man. Like to do things outside as we live in sunny Florida. I have a little toy poddle and chiwawa dog name Puddles and she is one and a half years old. I have a small physical limitation as my back is fused in two places and I have four pins to hold me up, take a lot of medicine and on a morphine pump internally. It is hard for me to find friends who understand my limitation, but I am determined to get healthy... Fri, 1 Mar 2013 20:22:56 EST I'm screwed too! Hi all,

I had my back fusion in January of 2012, so a little over a year ago. (L4-S1) I am trying to lose the weight I gained after the surgery, plus more. I can't believe how out of shape I am after not being able to do much for the year! My job is very physical, so hopefully I can go back next month. That would help!

I am currently doing Jillian Michael's Body Revolution for exercise, although I just was able to move to weeks 3 and 4 after being stuck on 1 and 2 for... Tue, 26 Feb 2013 19:54:21 EST Recent surgery Hello everyone,
I had my surgery on Dec. 20. I was able to make it home for Christmas, but don't remember I have a fusion on L4-5. I am still on some strong meds, but should be able to get off the strongest next week. The surgery itself went great, taking 5 hrs to complete, my poor family waiting all that time. I am two months out now. I can walk maybe some 20 minutes before I have to stop. I am working on the core exercises my PT gave me. I look forward to spring so that I ca... Sat, 23 Feb 2013 13:38:19 EST Curiosity "sparks" this question, health related. I recently read a blog of a new Sparkfriend. She commented on how hard showering was for her, in her case how much it took out of her.

For myself, I had thought I was the only one since I had never heard anyone complain about this issue. I certainly don't shower daily because of the problems. For me, from undressing, to showering to dressing, to drying my bangs and lightly drying the rest of my hair takes 40 minutes. If I have to shave add another 10-12 minutes. Recently my folks ... Sat, 23 Feb 2013 01:22:57 EST I am screwed up! L3 to S1 Hi,
Just happened upon this team. I will give it a try for a few days. I sware the team picture here is mine. I had my surgery back in 2008. During the surgery I contracted Chemical Meningitis. The toxins for a ruptured disc caused irritation of my spinal cord and brain. It caused a left drop foot. I took me a year of physical therapy to train the accessory muscles in my foot and leg. Now I walk/jog 5 to 6 days a week and I workout at the gym. I still walk around flopping my foot when it... Thu, 29 Nov 2012 16:49:13 EST What exercise for abs? What do other members do for ab exercise? I can not do crunchs and sit-ups so what are some other things to do to strengthen abs for a strong core?

I had two surgery's on L4, 5, S1 with artificial disc and rod, screws and also fusion. I have bulging discs in upper back as well. I have DDD... Thu, 29 Nov 2012 02:49:55 EST Hi-fused c4, c5, c6 and c7-new to forum Hi,
My name is Jennifer. I'm a medically retired state trooper, 35, single mother of a 5 yr old son.

My first surgery was June 09. I had c5-c6 and c6-c7 fused. I had hurt my neck a few different times but woke up one morning unable to move head w horrible pain shooting down right arm (gun hand). I did physical therapy and injections but nothing worked. Finally went surgery route and felt amazing 3 months later. Unfortunately, 10 months post surgery, my patrol unit was struc... First I'd like to say i found this sight in women's world magazine, so i came to see what it was all about. I took a bad fall in 6-2009, and it took a year to find out what was wrong wit me. i had every test and nobody could find out why i was in so much pain. My wonderful Neurosurgeon sent me to get a milligram and hello there it was. L4 was going into my spine and L3 and L5 were going in the opposite di... Sun, 27 May 2012 00:55:12 EST Surgery completed, recovery is long and hard Well, I wanted to tell all those who I chatted with last summer THANKS! I was so thankful for all the tips and pointers and what to look forward to when I had the fusion. I had it Feb 13 and this is the first time I have felt up to sitting at a computer for more than 10 min. I can do a lot of other things but sitting at the computer seems to be one of the hardest.
But the surgery went well and the recovery from the abdominal incinsion wasn't nearly as bad as I thought. I am not sure ... Sun, 8 Apr 2012 20:53:39 EST Strength Training for back pain???? I recently started going to curves with the thought that if i strengthened my upper body it may help with some of my neck pain from the surgery. So far all thats happened is soreness but i am still hopeful.
Just wondering if anyone else has any knowledge or experience with this??? Wed, 4 Apr 2012 10:52:25 EST filing for medical disability My surgeon has suggested that I file for and retire from work with a medical disability, as he feels that I qualify due to the number of surgeries that I've had. My dilemma is that when I file, I will automatically be placed on disability from work for one year. When I am denied and I appeal the decision, my employer will extend my disability for another year. If denied a second time, then I will be out of a job and will have no income. I am 50 years old, in good shape with the exception ... Tue, 3 Apr 2012 09:56:12 EST newbie-have had 3 surgeries for fusions Hi all-I had a lumbar fusion L5-S1 in 2005 due to a workers comp injury. I went through 5 months of PT and had one prednisone injection. I had nerve damage prior to the surgery, and I would say that the surgery was a success, as the nerve damage disappeared. A residual result of this surgery is that I am extremely sensitive to cold, whether it is due to cold weather in the winter or air conditioning in the summer. This causes my low back pain level to reach sometimes a 9 and I have decrea... Tue, 3 Apr 2012 09:52:48 EST Allow me to introduce myself Happy Monday Team!

As I take this step in co-leading with Daisy, I wanted to make sure I re-introduced myself to everyone.

My name is Stephanie, I'll be 25 next week. I had my Spinal Fusion Surgery on 1/12/07, to correct Scoliosis, t4-s1. I have dealt with chronic pain since about age 11, though my scoliosis remained undiagnosed until I was 17.

My weight loss journey has been life long, though in December, I told myself enough, is enough. And its time I get ... Mon, 19 Mar 2012 15:25:15 EST NEW TEAM LEADER First off, I think Daisy 443 has done a tremendous job being a team leader on a team that really does little to participate when you look at the numbers. I also believe we have far to many teams with a similar purpose. I propose we close this team and suggest another such as staying fit with spinal fusion. I think many of us are already on both of them.

I would offer to help, but I am losing the desire to keep repeating things in different groups which are so closely repetitive. N... Thu, 15 Mar 2012 21:41:16 EST Any advice for me? I am in my 5th week of recovery from S1 & L5, and have a couple of questions I would like to ask. However I not allowed any BLTs. I am sorry I had to go under a new name. All I had to say was very pessemistic and I didn't want people to just interpret that that was who I always was. Sun, 24 Apr 2011 06:36:36 EST I am all screwed up with no screws! I have had two back fusions. One was 20 years ago. the doc used part of my hip for the fusion. Never had pain once it healed, after almost a year. I fell at work on the stairs that someone had waxed. Ya I know! Stupid Idea! I had to have another fusion as my old one cracked and caused a lot of pain. during surgery they found the pain was from a small piece of bone that had chipped off. They removed that, stableized my old fusion and sent me home to heal. I now have pain every day. On a scale ... Sun, 17 Apr 2011 10:23:34 EST April Challenge A little late start! In between those surgeries I was treated with epidurals/steroids. My last surgery was in April 2010. Since then it seems that no matter how much I cut my calories, I can't lose weight. The usual story with chronic pain sufferers....injections, braces, drugs, physiotherapy, ice packs, hot packs, etc etc. Until I finally had my spinal fusion 2 years ago at the age of 19 (yep, just a baby). It helped me out a fair bit - my daily pain went from 8-9 down to a 2-4. I was fused S1, L4 and L5. Unfortunately, my pain has been slowly but surely getting worse over ... Marla Mon, 15 Feb 2010 11:20:52 EST Back in the saddle again! Hi! I'm Donna from Illinois and due to an injury, I had to have a double-dischetomy with a titanium plate and 6 screws. I had to have this surgery done twice because the first one didn't take and fell apart. (C5/6-c6/7). That was 10 years ago and I feel that I've put my life on hold all of these years. Things were fine until he started going back through my record and he realized that since 2005, I have lost 45 pounds. All of the sudden he starts telling me, that with the loss... I first had rods placed in my back for scoliosis when I was ten years old. Four year later, my rods were removed because a recurring "pressure sore" on my bottom was found to actually be a "tract."

Apparently, soon after the surgery when I was ten, the incision became infected with strep. I was given antibiotics, and it was thought that the infection had been cur...
