My name is Suanough (Sue-Anna, it's Irish) and I have had 7 spinal fusions. Starting in 2002 with L-4,L-5 and traveling up each year to finally end with T10 in 2010. Of course, lots of arthritis and now I have begun to have Bursitis in both hips (recently both were replaced). This is what is causing me new pain, it's very hard to walk more than 100 steps. Not sure what to do but I think I'll have to see an O... Found out that way that a lot of the headaches the doctors were attributing to my neck were actually food allergies. Still, I have lost some function in my right arm and hand, not to mention the unrelenting muscle spasms.

Wouldn't hurt me to lose 20-30 pounds so figured I'd buckle down and get on with it. I had my very first surgery in 1970. After losing all feeling in my right side of my body, from face to leg and foot, I knew I had something serious. From being healthy and never having an x-ray, I was rushed to the best doctor's and top hospital for Orthopaedic Surgery
and was operated on for Cervical Fusion. But I have a tough time putting on socks. Yes, I have a sock puller, (I can't find it at the moment) but I didn't like it that much. Tying shoes is a bother too, but that is easily remedied with the right shoe. Sandals work fine but it is coming up fall again. I get up 5 mornings a week and go to the pool. I am 42 and had C5-C6 fused in 2008 after a few years of pain in arms/neck after a fall. I have had problems ever since and docs say I have chronic pain/flare ups that I need to learn to get through. Any sudden motion can cause pain so living in a rural area with bumpy roads is kind of like torture some days. I avoid many things I use to enjoy like playing volleyball with my daughter, running, etc. So I have packed on the pounds and it's time to wake up, get this weight off a... I was able to make it home for Christmas, but don't remember much..lol. I have a fusion on L4-5. I am still on some strong meds, but should be able to get off the strongest next week. The surgery itself went great, taking 5 hrs to complete, my poor family waiting all that time. I am two months out now. I can walk maybe some 20 minutes before I have to stop. I certainly don't shower daily because of the problems. For me, from undressing, to showering to dressing, to drying my bangs and lightly drying the rest of my hair takes 40 minutes. I sware the team picture here is mine. I had my surgery back in 2008. During the surgery I contracted Chemical Meningitis. The toxins for a ruptured disc caused irritation of my spinal cord and brain. It caused a left drop foot. I took me a year of physical therapy to train the accessory muscles in my foot and leg. I went through 5 months of PT and had one prednisone injection. I had nerve damage prior to the surgery, and I would say that the surgery was a success, as the nerve damage disappeared. A residual result of this surgery is that I am extremely sensitive to cold, whether it is due to cold weather in the winter or air conditioning in the summer. This causes my low back pain level to reach sometimes a 9 and I have decrea... It helped me out a fair bit - my daily pain went from 8-9 down to a 2-4. I was fused S1, L4 and L5. Unfortunately, my pain has been slowly but surely getting worse over ... I injured my back at work in November 2006. The insurance company put me through the ringer with tests, procedures, and doctor visits with the result being the same everytime...I needed surgery. Finally, on November 19, 2009 I had a double fusion. I have belonged to several weight loss sites throughout the years, but never found any with a forum like this. My son's doctor had mentioned spark people to me abo... I'm new to this team! http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=-1x27543x30687720 I was browsing the spark team when I came upon this group. I had 11 levels of my spine done in 1989 with hardware and Harrington rods, 2 years after that the hardware on the top had to be taken out because a bolt was aggravating a nerve. I have worked on and off over the years in part time jobs, I have been diagnosed with Ankylosing spondilitis and of course I take meds. Looking forward to providing support and sharing our issues. Sat, 2 Jan 2010 14:02:25 EST Losing weight but increasing pain http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=0x27543x30622825 I saw my doctor on the 23 Dec and at first when I told him I would need a new Percocet prescription before I would next see him, he said that was fine, I was taking a reasonable amount and to just watch the tylenol totals between the Percocet and the balacet.
He knows that I have been exercising to lose weight. Things were fine until he started going back through my record and he realized that since 2005, I have lost 45 pounds. All of the sudden he starts telling me, that with the loss... Thu, 31 Dec 2009 00:29:56 EST Anyone here? http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=-1x27543x30579818 Hello . My name is Dina and I am ALL SCREWED UP! Had a single level fusion last year and a 2 level 360 fusion in July. I have since gained 30 lbs and am determined to get my life back. Would love to hear from some others that understand what I am going through. Thanks!! Tue, 29 Dec 2009 11:25:07 EST Peace to all members of this team http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=-1x27543x30030624 I just joined SP tonight. My daughter is doing it, too. I have a spinal fusion at C5/6 and C6/7. I was injured and had to have a second surgery to secure my neck. My head gets heavy and I have to lie down at some point each day. I've been afraid to do much in the exercise department. Perhaps joining your group will be a blessing! Nice to meet you! Donna Sun, 29 Nov 2009 22:30:47 EST Taking a week off http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=0x27543x27659408 I woke up the other morning with the feeling of water on my back and hip - not a good thing in my back history. It is happening throughout the day.

I decided I would take a week and only walk, no other exercises. I plan to just sit on ice. I hate not doing the exercises I had been doing, but I spoke with my PT and she agreed that I need to try to give it a break.

In a week, I'll re-evaluate, and either move on and take my chances or give it more time.
Oh well......... In August of 2005 I had a fusion of the C5-C6 area. And i suppose we all no the pain that a compressed nerve feels like. Now i have a compressed nerve in my lower back near my tailbone, which is sending pain down my left leg, sometimes the pain is so great it wakes me up at night. Sat, 1 Aug 2009 07:53:05 EST New to group http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=-1x27543x27372637 Hi! As you see I am new to the group. Last year in August, I had surgery done on my back. I had 4 fusions with new discs that were made from a polymer. They fixed my spine from L1-L5.I have 10 screws,2 braces ,2 flexible rods, and a plate in my spine now. The doctor said it takes about 2 years to completely heal. They went in through my side and my back. They also had me wear a bone growth stimulator for 9 months. Have any of you had similar surgery? I am curious about some of the problems you ... I just opted out of any more surgery. A full spinal MRI plus dye exposed a multi-level failure of discs from cervical to lumbar. It was suggested that I have a carbon fiber cage system installed. I declined. From 2002 through 2008 the surgeries transferred the load from the fused up one level and it seemed pretty repetitious. So... I am 55 and had a laminectomy/foramenotomy/facetectomy with autograft fusion and instrumentation of C3 through C6 in July 2007. This was the result of stenosis from arthritis, or spondylosis...or is it -itis? Sheesh, I can't keep 'em straight. Whatever.

Anyway, I've had a numb right arm and hand since the surgery that has not improved, even after 2 years. To add to the mix, my left hand has begun to get numb. I have ... I was doing great with my weight loss, I had already lost about 100 pounds, until January 2009 when I slipped and fell twice within a 24 hour period on 2 seperate patches of ice. I just had C4, C5, & C6 fused together. I had two ruptured discs and one bulging disc. 24 I am the type of person that you can't keep down though. I was up out of bed and out walking the same day I had surgery while ... I have lost just short of 8 pounds. I have just tried the new EA Sports Active. I love it from a psychological perspective. My back maybe not so much. I am going to keep at it for a while and I will monitor the pain pill usage (increase) and then I will try to balance between the two.
I hope you all are well and ready for the summer... This is only the 2nd online community I've joined and it seems perfect for me. I have a double-level fusion (L4 to S1), was recently classified as a "chronic pain patient," (still working a LOT on feeling/getting better), have an 8-month-old baby at home and about 30 pounds to lose. Guess I need to do a little more exploring and update my profile and so forth but I wanted to say hello! Nice to meet you all and I can't wait to hear all your stories!
-Byrd Tue, 24 Mar 2009 12:42:58 EST A long timer http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=-1x27543x23845958 I loved the name of this group. I am 43 and have had premature disc degeneration since I was 14. My first fusion was at 15 and I have now been fused from L2- S1. My last surgery was at 21. I still manage my life with pain medication. I do lots of things i shouldn't, but you only get one life to live. I however can not make the claim of all screwed up because I am put together with iliac crest.

I have been altering my lifestyle for years, some stick, some eventually give... I have a question, but a little background on me, first. I first had rods placed in my back for scoliosis when I was ten years old. Four year later, my rods were removed because a recurring "pressure sore" on my bottom was found to actually be a "tract."

Apparently, soon after the surgery when I was ten, the incision became infected with strep. I was given antibiotics, and it was thought that the infection had been cur... My name is Sara, I am 23, about to be married at the end of may, and 3 months out of a t10-pelvis fusion coupled with a hemi-vertebral osteotomy. Up until about a month ago I could see progress. I was walking up to 8 miles a day...but now I can barely manage two or three (if that). My surgeon wants me to walk 10-15 miles per day...or at least to work up to it in the next few months. So far...I feel pretty much like a failure in that aspect.
I am having a lot of pain lately, but ...
