As a runner, I count on my Holy Yoga practice to help prevent injury and increase flexibility. How does your yoga practice fit with your other fitness activities? Or are you a yoga-only person? I'd love to hear how yoga fits into the big fitness picture for others. I don't have tons of time to practice, but find that 20 minutes, a few times a week, is very helpful for my body and spirit. Mon, 21 Jan 2013 17:09:09 EST Totally new to yoga Hi, I'm Lynda and I'm a Christian. I'm also here to get fit and healthy and I'm interested in learning more about yoga. I've got more than 70 lbs to lose, so jogging isn't going to happen for a while, if ever. I need something that is low impact and highly effective. My daughter says she really enjoys yoga, so I thought I'd give it a try. 414 Wed, 12 Dec 2012 19:08:25 EST Anyone up for an Advent challenge? Glad to find this team. I know God sent me here. Wed, 16 Nov 2011 14:15:35 EST Hello everyone! Hi everyone! I am new to this group, and to sparkpeople! I love yoga, and was intrigued to find a group devoted to practicing it in a Christ-centered way. I am just beginning to learn about Holy Yoga, but I'm hoping it will prove to be a way for me to improve my relationship with God while working on my physical fitness.
If you have any advice for getting started, I'm all ears!
Looking forward to talking about Christian yoga with you all :) Sat, 12 Nov 2011 23:21:55 EST new to this team :-) Hello! I am very excited to find this team!

I am a Christian woman who loves what yoga does for my fibromyalgia symptoms. I was so afraid to try yoga due to the eastern spiritualism associated with it. A Christian friend who is a nurse encouraged me to try it using a Christian yoga dvd. I love it!! I am not so clumsy: I hardly fall at all anymore. I am more flexible. I am stronger. I have more endurance. My muscles bind up a lot less often and I don't have the 24/7/365 pai... Mon, 26 Sep 2011 19:17:08 EST Very Interesting Hi everyone~ i just found this team and I am thankful. Like many others here I have had an interest in Yoga but a little leery of the practice of it. It is awesome to be able to learn how it can be done with a Christian perspective. Keeping Christ as my center. Blessings to all! 135 Thu, 11 Aug 2011 09:10:39 EST Thrilled to find this I did some Yoga during my last couple of pregnancies to help with relaxation and loved it. I'd like to try it again regularly now, more for peace, internal wellness, and spiritual meditation than for calorie-burning (although I wouldn't mind that if it happens, lol). I'm limiting calorie intake and walking/jogging on a treadmill during my lunch breaks for that.

My sister just gave me a Wii Fit as a gift, and I'm hoping to roll its training abilities, Yoga, and prayer into a big fat... I'm always happy to connect with other Christians who practice Yoga, because I think it's a great benefit to ALL people... regardless or religion or lack of it. I know there are very strong opinions on both sides of the fence when it comes to Christians doing Yoga, so it'll be interesting to see what others have to say! :) Sun, 14 Nov 2010 16:54:26 EST Hello I am New Too! My name is Holly, I found your team while looking through the groups. I am christian and have been one since I was 11 yrs old. I am also starting to like Yoga. I am struggling with weight, struggling with getting closer to my Lord and Savior, and struggling to find peace in my stressful life. I thought this website might help me accomplish all 3 trouble spots by helping me get focused and slow my whirlwind life down. I am my own worst enemy as far as trying to do too much and my brain is always running 90 miles an hour.

Looking forward to learning a new concept to help me with my inner peace. Sun, 8 Aug 2010 11:09:41 EST shoulder/arm pain I have had a problem with pain in my left arm(the same side as my surgery). It started with what felt like a muscle tear last summer. I don't think I did it doing yoga. I was actually reaching behind the car seat when the pain first started. It has gotten to a sometimes excruciating point and now involves my shoulder at times. I haven't been to a doctor about this specifically because I am trying to get caught up on my medical bills from 2 bouts of pneumonia this past spring, plus my regular ... Fri, 6 Aug 2010 22:52:58 EST New Hi! My name is Joy and I'm new.

I suppose I should put a bit of background on what brought me to this SparkTeam and the desire to learn more about Yoga. I bought the Wii Fit early in 2009 and really enjoyed using it. I wanted to use the yoga part of the exercise but when I talked to my Mom about it she was very concerned because of the spiritual implications... so I prayed about it and came to the personal conviction that no position the body can get into is wrong or evil in and of... Tue, 22 Jun 2010 17:14:49 EST Love yoga, never put it in Christian format :) Hi! I just found this group today and I thought it sounded interesting. The merger of Christianity and yoga makes perfect sense to me. What could be a better way to give your whole attention to what God may have in store for you? As for me, I have 3 small kids, I'm building up my exercise habits, and haven't had a lot of time to do yoga since I moved this past month, but am looking forward to it :) I need to find that book in a library or bookstore so I can better understand Christian Yoga :) Mon, 31 May 2010 23:07:52 EST Whats in your ipod? i'd be curious to know what others are listening to while doing yoga at home! If you listen to anything at all! i usually listen to the "7 years in Tibet" Soundtrack or Cafe del Mar. Thu, 27 May 2010 21:35:26 EST What is your go-to pose for worship? I am going to start a few threads here and hope people will share their "go to" poses for various conditions and situations.

Starting with back pain.... my go-to poses are backbends (standing camel in my office, over a ball at home), and hip work like pigeon poses. I also like to do twists (thread the need for upper back, one legged lying down twist for lower).

How about you? Tue, 25 May 2010 10:45:50 EST New here! Hi! I never heard of Christian Yoga before. I am intrigued! I have always wanted to get into yoga, but never really got around to it. I can't wait to get started. :) Tue, 18 May 2010 12:59:38 EST Yoga for back pain When I was much younger, I had chronic low back pain and thought I was destined to deal with it since my father had. Yoga - particularly working on opening my hamstrings and hips, as well as improving my posture - has helped tremendously. It is pretty much gone. Now I am older and have arthritis in my mid - upper back. Good posture again is helped by the over all practice, and twists really help as well.

One thing that surprised me about back pain is that my mind always tells me to... I started sparkpeople 3 years ago it went fantastically! I lost 30 pounds in 4 months with yoga, walking and the nutrtion tracker. I haven't been very successful with my healthy habits lately and I've gained back about 20 pounds - grrr... but I hope to get back on track. I amd glad to find t... Thu, 11 Feb 2010 03:03:03 EST Yoga in Fitness Tracker Hi all! Today I've had a couple of questions on logging yoga on SP. It is listed under cardio, although most yoga is not terribly cardiovascular. The best way to truly log your calorie burn is with a heart rate monitor, although the yoga listing on the SP tracker will probably come close. Even with vinyasa flow yoga, I just don't burn very many calories in my practice. (Bikram yoga is another story, but I prefer my practice, thanks! ;))

That said, practicing yoga for fitness and ev... Wed, 20 Jan 2010 13:10:24 EST Guided Yoga Practice for Christians? Here is where we can post our favorite pose sequences. I may have mentioned this elsewhere but will throw it in to get us started. The first I wanted to share is a prayer sequence that I like to use in my Holy Yoga classes. I often neglect to do it in my home practice but am always glad when I do. It is in the plural below because of the group class setting, but could also use "my and I" instead of "our and we" of course:

*God our Creator (inhaling, arms sweepi... Wed, 6 Jan 2010 12:07:36 EST As an instructor - How do you keep your passion? I have been teaching for the past few years. Lately I feel very discouraged. The participation in my class is dwindling. Many of the participants at our gym would prefer more active classes. I have come to love the benefits of the more relaxed stretching/strength building moves and can keep up with the best of them in the other classes. I try to educate people on the benefits of this type of exercise, yet the participation doesn't increase. I am told I do a very good job putting togethe... Wed, 30 Dec 2009 11:56:16 EST I am happy to have found you Hi, my name is Chris. This forum is completly new to me but I am loving everything I seen so far on Sparkpeople. Charting my food and exercise for the day is very helpful for me because it keeps me honest with myself. Well here's my dilemma I'm 60 yrs old post-menopausal woman who has gained the obligatory 35 + pounds with most of it around my waist and gut. Weight lost is extremely slow for me. I work out five days per week, my diet is getting better since I've joined sparkpeople. I am ... Fri, 4 Dec 2009 10:39:22 EST New Team Member Hi Everyone - I'm new to the team, but not to Sparks. We focused on non-violence in action, speech, thought, toward ourselves and those around us. Sometimes being kind to ourselves is harder! In our asana (pose) practice we talked about how challenge is good, but pushing ourselves is a way of being violent/unkind to ourselves.

(Thanks to (teacher training material) for the insight... Mon, 14 Sep 2009 20:04:21 EST How to hurt yourself doing yoga One of the things I have wanted to try for years is Bikram Yoga. There is no studio near me and while on vacation I signed up for a week trial. The room temp in Bikram is over 105 degrees, and there is a very specific set of 26 poses done twice - and instructed by a "dialogue" that doesn't change from class to class. Think yoga drill sargeant. I have friends that LOVE this style of yoga so I don't mean to disparage it in any way, but I should have brought my usual yoga-sense with me instead o... Sun, 9 Aug 2009 14:05:31 EST Totally New To Yoga Okay, yoga s something I have always shied away from but this week I became desperate. I'm new to Spark People, but I've been doing some yoga for a while. I'm not consistent, which is one of my goals - to do yoga a few days each week.

I really enjoy how I feel during and after yoga - the stretching, the flexibility, it's great! I enjoy poses, but my favorite are the flowing routines (sun salutes they are often called). Sun, 24 May 2009 20:02:30 EST hello, it's me I'm introducing myself and thrilled to find a Christian yoga team. I began yoga a few months ago at my gym when they did away with the Pilates class I'd been going to that hour. So I switched to yoga. Wow. What a time to worship, sing (quietly) and have scripture come to mind. I have 60 lbs. to lose and just started it's a bit overwhelming and i don't want keeping up with the site to become a part-time job, but i am beginning to see the value of developing some fitness moves ... When I say that to people, I have to quickly add: "It is not about the calories burned." Yoga helped me to lose weight by keeping me in touch with my body and spirit. To feed myself in the ways I needed feeding, not just with food. When I am not practicing regularly, the weight creeps back up, even though I have lots of other calorie burn going on. Other aches an pains also return, which slows me down physically.

How has yoga help... It was a secular, fitness yoga training and the music had lots of wacky lyrics that were either weird to me (many were in French, but I could understand bits and pieces, one had a deep Barry White-ish voice talking) or struck me as inappropriate (sexual in some cases).

I... Mon, 30 Mar 2009 09:48:33 EST relaxation pose Hi everyone! I was on a retreat with my sister's church this weekend and taught two Holy Yoga classes. It was such a blessing to me to practice with these women. Many were new to yoga and were very excited about the practice. During relaxation I read a portion of a quote from the Thomas Ryan book, Prayer of Heart and Body (he is quoting Crolyn Cronk) that I thought I'd also share with you. There has been a request for some team goals - I assume this means goals you can check off/log as you meet them. I have added our Lenten reading project (Prayer of Heart and Body by Thomas Ryan) but am happy to add others. Please make your suggestions here!

Blessings,
Liz 459 Sat, 14 Mar 2009 10:49:18 EST Where is everyone? Why don't we have team goals? Hi,

Where is everyone? I was just wondering why this team isn't active? Also, there's not any team goals listed.

Who's leading the team? Where's the welcoming for new members?

I feel like this is a ghost "team". It needs to be more active. I was looking forward to a fun, uplifting Christian based yoga practice.

I would love to get this team going! I have wonderful, fun idea's. Sun, 8 Mar 2009 13:28:00 EST Healing back pain with yoga Hi everybody! Back pain can really make life miserable. My experience has been that yoga is a miracle for low back pain. I had lived with chronic pain and thought it was just my lot in life (my dad has always had chronic low back pain so I figured I got it honestly). My yoga practice eliminated this pain.

I recently had an upper/mid back injury and was seeing the chiropractor almost daily. It helped a little but time and yoga did the rest. I bought a set of three yoga dvd a few months ago when I was expecting my second baby, I then decided to wait until she was born, she is now four months old and I still can't get myself to start. I normally workout five times a week and I was thinking of changing 1 of my workout to do yoga.

How do I motivate myself to getting started? Mon, 23 Feb 2009 03:43:57 EST New Here! Hi all,

Just wanted to take a minute to introduce myself. I've dabbled in yoga for many years and try to incorporate it as part of my fitness routine at least once a week. Usually I do yoga DVDs, but last year I was able to take an eight week class which was great!

I was wondering if there are any plans to do something as a Team during Lent. Tue, 17 Feb 2009 18:39:42 EST recorded on dvd I recorded 2 yoga programs from exercise tv yesterday. Instructors were Elise Gulan and Angie Stewart. It looks like workouts I will have to work into. They make it look so easy. The incorporate some cardio along with yoga.

I used to take a ballet class. I am 53 yo so it is not easy. I didn't go back in September and may not ever go back. It is a source of frustration for me. I think doing yoga regularly will help give me that outlet to be graceful, etc. I am still on a... Sat, 17 Jan 2009 09:52:49 EST I'm new! Hi! I'm new to the team. My name is Patty, married, 53 yo, sahm to 4 boys, ages 22, 20 and twins 15.

I've done yoga in the past to a tv show. It helped so much with my lower back. I want to get back to it regularly. Can I really become more flexible at this age?

I'm looking forward to getting to know everyone!
patty Wed, 14 Jan 2009 11:02:53 EST New Year's Resolutions, anyone? Hi team! Anyone out there planning on new year's resolutions? I have started (finally) to get back on the fitness wagon, but have a ways to go. I even have to get back to the basics of drinking enough water each day. In fact, I think I will start there! AND I need to get back to logging my food intake daily. Anybody else planning on a fresh start in 2009? Tue, 30 Dec 2008 17:49:40 EST Warrior poses I am just finishing up a Beth Moore study on the Psalms of Ascent. Part of last week's lesson was on our faith community, and the idea the we should have each other's backs - to fight FOR rather than AGAINST each other. I will have to go back to my lesson book to recall the scripture references but warrior poses immediately sprang to mind. They are such great poses of strength and stability, and I love the metaphor of fighting FOR each other (even if just as prayer warriors!). Denominational ... Mon, 1 Dec 2008 12:32:53 EST Thankful for my yoga practice Hi! My name is Liz and I have been praticing yoga for about 6 years. I also have my RYT and Holy Yoga certifications. Yoga has had an amazing impact on me physically and spiritually. I feel like it helps me to place my focus on Christ - and that it is truly a form of worship. I am on some really great teams here at SP, but wanted to have a place to reflect with and encourage other Christians who are practicing yoga. I have lost my center lately and need to get back into taking better care of ...
