Tue, 11 Mar 2014 18:40:35 EST New to the 2013 team Hi swimmers! Glad I found this team. I've been outta the swim loop for a few years but my circumstances have changed (yay!) and I signed up for a swim program at a university in my town. Meet with that group 3x/week for drills and workout, and I then either come early or stay late and swim more yardage. I signed up for the English Channel Challenge. I def. need to stay motivated especially to slowly add yardage to my sessions.

Thanks for having this group! Sat, 16 Feb 2013 20:05:17 EST Eating before swimming? I swim several days a week at 5 am. When I was doing strength training that early, I always ate before working out. I have tried having something light, like some dried fruit and nuts on the way to the pool. I find that some days it doesn't sit well. When do you eat if you are swimming? And what do you eat? Thu, 31 Jan 2013 16:09:14 EST New gal in town! Hello, all! I used to swim miles weekly, but am sorely out of shape. Having just joined the local Y, I'll be swimming at least 4 days a week. They even have aqua zumba! (Not good for the miles, but great for the soul!)

Looking forward to prowling around the discussions.

Caity Wed, 9 Jan 2013 18:04:56 EST hello! hello everybody! :)
I'm Livia, i started swimming when i was around 5 and continued for 15 years taking part into an agonistic team. I stopped for one year because of my studies and i want to start swimming again and i think i'll find nice challenges here to motivate me. :) Mon, 31 Dec 2012 12:50:18 EST Need motivation Hello,
I was very excited to find this team. I entered a turkey challenge at my health club and was swimming like mad. The rules were, 2 weeks to swim as much as possible. Record your laps each day, winner got a turkey. Forth efforts time in my life I became super competitive. I swam 34,000 meters in 10 days. Sadly sincethecompetitionhasended, I have had trouble keeping up my pace and effort. Hopefully this will give me that push I need. Beginning the mackicac challenge today. As a form... Mon, 17 Dec 2012 13:08:41 EST new to the team Hi everyone, getting back into this once again hope to stay on track
I love swimming, started swimming about 2 years ago but now to get back
Serious with it 30 mins.4 days a week yes i can.Thanks everyone
Sun, 2 Dec 2012 05:16:52 EST back in the pool again... I have been back in the pool since January 2012, after a LONG stretch away from the water. I have been working up my endurance and would love to participate in a challenge to keep me pushing myself up on the distances. This sounds like a great place to participate in a challenge to keep me going in the pool longer than I usually do. I do water aerobics and swim laps afterwards. I think I will reverse that so I can get more laps. I use a 25 yard pool, so will measuring my miles in yards. Sun, 14 Oct 2012 23:43:39 EST Back to the pool in Memphis! I'm a 40 year old that has definitely been inspired by Dara Torres and Diana Nyad and their swimming achievements, and so when I joined a gym in my neighborhood 2 months ago, I was delighted to see that there was a lap pool, and I've incorporated swimming into my workout plan ever since, and absolutely LOVE it.

I now swim 2-3 times a week, run 3 times a week and do Zumba and spin classes to keep things interesting. Swimming is definitely my first love, though...not only is my body... Tue, 21 Aug 2012 12:55:33 EST new to the team Hi, everyone,

I'm from Tyler, TX and need a little boost on my weight lose program. I lost 120 pounds in the last 18 months by turning my diet upside down and cutting out half my calorie intake and doing some intense running, mountain biking, and swimming 40-60 minutes a day 5-7 days a week. I've lost the bulk of my weight, but just can't lose the last 20-25 pounds hanging around my midrif.

I'm revaping my diet and adding more resistance to my cardio based workouts. I ... Mon, 23 Jul 2012 11:31:26 EST Coming back to swimming after a million years. I have recently returned to swimming after what seems like a life time. A challenge from my acupuncturist finds me taking it to a level I never would have before. I am swimming three times a week, averaging 2000 yards/workout. I am registered to swim an 1 mile long fresh water race on August 18, the Nuclear Swim in Hillsborough, NC. My acupuncturist is swimming it with me. Glad to find this forum and challenge! Tue, 17 Jul 2012 06:17:25 EST Swim for tone and HIT My main cardio is walking (I've got chronic fatigue). Its sustainable and doesn't cause relapses.

However - I love to swim.
So the plan is to add gentle swimming once a week as a fluid stregnth training. That and I'd like to give High Insensity Training a try (30 second intervals of treading water). I caught a BBC documentary on it a few months back - it is suppose to be very productive for blood sugar.

So I won't be getting anywhere FAST - but I'll get there. Wed, 9 Nov 2011 16:30:55 EST Chesapeake Bay Swim I live a couple miles from the bay and I have always wanted to participate in the annual Chesapeake Bay Swim. It is a 4.4 mile swim from Sandy Point State Park to Kent Island. Now that I'm back in the pool, I thought I'd give it a shot, at least virtually. It's a beautiful body of water, so here goes. 950 yards down, 6310 yards to go! Anybody in? Fri, 23 Sep 2011 11:08:31 EST Hello I'm a swimmer who recently got back in the pool. Mon, 29 Aug 2011 18:08:28 EST I love swimming Hello, my name is Tracey, and I find that I like to use the pool at my gym more than the fitness center. I like that few people are in it, and my head is underwater so I can't hear people talking and I can't see them. I also like how I can get a great workout in such a short amount of time and still build muscle. I REALLY like that I get to take a shower afterwards with no kids hollering at me or husband asking for something or another. Swimming is GREAT me time.
Thank you for having... I have currently this year swam 30 miles so far this year. Sun, 10 May 2009 09:03:50 EST Does anyone use a HRM in the pool? I want to get a HRM and am pretty set on the Polar F6. That seems to be the #1 pick. I read on the website that it can be worn in the pool, but may short out in high chlorine. I was just wondering if anyone had an F6 and how did it do in the water? Mon, 26 Jan 2009 22:10:20 EST Hello Everyone Having always had a strong affinity to water, you could say I just can’t keep away from it – I love being wet!

I’m what I would call a “good” swimmer; I’ve never ever competed but have been told that I could at masters. Up until 8 months ago I was clocking up about 10k a week in the pool. I can only swim crawl but have a slow strong stroke that’s surprisingly fast.

I’ve just got back from the pool - first session in months and managed 2k in 45min. Not bad for someone c... Wed, 7 Jan 2009 12:05:11 EST Taking up the Challenge I stumbled upon this group when I was looking for other swimming related teams. It caught my eye because I have this crazy dream of someday swimming the real English Channel (in all its icy/wavey glory). For now, I will have to settle for long swims at my local gym and sporadic open water forays in Lake Michigan (which is plenty cold at the moment).

I swam competitively in high school and college and two decades later, still miss having a team. The different challenges you do so... Mon, 14 Jul 2008 08:51:26 EST Team Goal I added the Team Goal and then went back and put in all the swimming I've done for the month so I could see where I am with the 480 minutes per month goal. But now the Leader Board looks all skewed. I just wanted to let everyone know. I haven't swam 515 minutes since Aldana posted the goal on the 17th! :)

Kelly Sat, 21 Jun 2008 19:24:33 EST HELLO! I stopped swimming on the masters team near my home in Alexandria since getting this cough that wouldn't quit, but have started swimming on my own. I want to wait until I've lost about 40 lbs. before rejoining. Call it pride or fear of coughing a lot again, but I decided I'd rather wait until I'm under 200 and have a flatter waist before swimming. But I can start going up the Rec Center on my own, or swim at our outdoor apartment pool on weekends to try and make 24 miles of the Amazon. I ... Thu, 19 Jun 2008 12:59:52 EST Hi Everyone! I just joined today and I'm really excited to complete these challenges. I used to swim long distance in high school but that was 4 years ago. I just got back into swimming but I find myself getting bored with the laps at about 700 yards these challenges will definitely get me to stay in the pool for longer! Wed, 11 Jun 2008 10:20:34 EST Lap Counting Is there anyone else who has trouble with keeping track of laps? I simply can't do it and I'm not talking about 20, 30, 40 laps. I'm talking about losing track while I'm still in the single digits.
So, can any of you offer tips or suggestions? Tue, 20 May 2008 14:56:25 EST Swim Plan I've started getting my workouts off of and they are totally kicking my butt! In a great way. I tend to get bored just swimming straight laps, but if I have a workout plan with definite goals, the laps just fly by.

Kelly Fri, 18 Apr 2008 09:25:46 EST Another swim fan here Hi all,

I just joined your team and I love the challenges. I have been out of the pool for almost a year because of chronic ear infections. It has been breaking my heart. Every time I smell chlorine I get excited! I gained a bit of weight too by losing my swimming routine of 2km three times a week. I have been ashamed to get back into my suit and hit the water. So, yesterday I got a great new suit--a one piece with shorts! Also, new cap, googles, and my SwiMP3 should be her... Mon, 14 Apr 2008 07:57:14 EST Hello to all! I just joined this team today - or was it last night? I don't know. Anyway, I posted my first swim earlier today under the "Swim the English Channel thread. I'm really excited to join this challenge. I swam competitively some in middle and high school and swimming was the only sport I've ever really enjoyed. I just got back into swimming last summer after a 16 year "break" (shame on me) and have loved it. I go to the pool anywhere from zero to 4 times a week depending on how motivated I... Fri, 4 Apr 2008 16:46:15 EST funny shower question okay, this may sound weird, but has anyone noticed different effects whether they shower hot or cold after a swim?
i used to have a hot shower after swimming to rinse off the chlorine, and even when i still felt fit in the pool and able to do a few more laps, after the hot shower and 10 min bike ride home i used to feel like my legs wouldn't carry me up to my 3rd floor flat.
recently i have finished off my hot shower with a cold shower, and i have been feeling much fitter after my s... Mon, 3 Mar 2008 08:31:11 EST It's almost time!! I'm so excited! I go back to work on monday after my maternity leave and I will finally be able to go back to the pool. I can't wait to start swimming again. Hopefully it will help me shed this extra weight I'm carrying around. I look forward to doing the challenges. I'm going to take some before pictures this weekend and then it'll help me see my progress over the next couple of months. Whenever I'm out of the pool for a while I start dreaming about it. It's time to get back in! Sat, 2 Feb 2008 07:38:53 EST Does anyone swim with music? I'm trying to find a waterproof mp3 player or waterproof case to use with my current (creative zen) mp3 player. Does anyone have any experience with this? It seems many items are made for iPod (naturally) but not much for other players. The Finis Swimp3 looks interesting, but is still pretty expensive. Any help would be appreciated.
Regards,
Mary Fri, 1 Feb 2008 13:01:11 EST Yay! Swimmers! Sooo stoked to see a swimming-focused group on here. Was competitive for about 19 years, specialties being the 200 Fly and 400 IM and I was really disappointed that I let myself go from athlete to couch potato. Love the idea of swimming the english channel, though I'm not sure when I'll be getting over to England from New Zealand right now!!! Sun, 13 Jan 2008 22:00:55 EST Workouts This is what I swam today:

300 Warm up

200 IM
4x50 swim/kick/drill/swim (FLY)
200 IM
4x50 s/k/d/s (BACK)
200 IM
4x50 s/k/d/s (BREAST)
200 IM
4x50 s/k/d/s (FREE)
200 IM

300 Cool Down

(2400 yards total)

I skipped the cool down... Bad I know... But seriously, the way I swam that last 200 IM was like a cool down. And I needed hydration. BAD. Sat, 29 Dec 2007 21:31:53 EST Just wanted to say Hi! I am a newbie! I coach 2 swim teams and decided I need to start swimming again after 10 years out of the pool. I played Water Polo as well.

I swam 2300 yards yesterday. I am not sure which challenge to do. My goal is to swim 2000-4000 yards a day at least 3 times a week.

Anyway, I love the water and hope to get some motivation here! Sat, 29 Dec 2007 00:34:57 EST I am still alive Hi everyone, I just stopped to let you knoyw that I am alive, and well (for the most part at least LOL, I will not stuff you with my emotional turmoil though)...
Anyway, i am still withouth a pool (even my bike got stolen three weeks ago, I got an other used one since, it is far from what I had though)...
And I have a bit of extra translating work at home, which is rather urgent.

I miss all of you, and also I miss swimming soooooooo terribly.
Hugs for everyone. Mon, 29 Oct 2007 16:19:09 EST ChiSwimming There are some questions from a newbie in this message - I'm just not very adept about framing the question. I'm calling it ChiSwimming because I'm a ChiRunner and it incorporates the same ideal - movement originating from the core. This swimming style emphasizes the hip/body rotation and lengthening the stroke length.

My questions - how many of you are training this way? Can I hope that my swimming teacher will be teaching this way? If I am taught "traditionnally" is this go... Sun, 21 Oct 2007 22:03:31 EST strength training? i swim for my cardio (mostly breaststroke) and for strength training i do some of the exercise recommended for a start by sparkpeople - back extensions, crunches with twist, wall pushups (the modified pushups recommended by SP cause a problem with my knees), leg curls and squats.
what do you all do for strength training?
are there exercises that support/complement the swimming workout? i guess it makes more sense to use complementary exercise instead of training the muscles i train ... Wed, 26 Sep 2007 04:49:44 EST New & Need Help I'm middle distance swimmer I like to do 800m and 1500m swims. I hadn't swam in ages and had to build myself up to those distances and I can do it consistently now BUT lately around the 250m mark I start to feel nauseous and disorientated and I have to stop, and I fell nauseous for about 2 hours after the swim.
The pool is an indoor heated pool, although it has happened in the outdoor non heated pool but not as bad.
I'm an blood pressure medication.
I don't know much about the ... Sat, 4 Aug 2007 23:22:56 EST anyone have a swimmers IPOD? I'd love to hear music while swimming, but I'd like to hear some product review.
Fri, 13 Jul 2007 09:06:32 EST What Do You Eat? I'm just wondering what everyone eats before swimming. If I have a hard swim and don't eat enough either before or after, my blood sugar plummets and I get a migraine. I was working out in the evenings and had my food all worked out, but I just switched to first thing in the morning and am still figuring the food out.

This morning I had 3/4 C. of pineapple and a slice of whole wheat bread with a dab of yogurt spread. Let us know about you This is the tread in which you should introduce your self to the rest of the team.

Thanks
Aldana Mon, 18 Jun 2007 12:10:31 EST Former swimmer looking to get back in the pool Hi all,

I just joined your group because I am looking for new workouts. I am a former competitive swimmer, and I have to say that of all the different ways to work out swimming will always be my favorite. It's been years since I've been in a pool, but as soon as I get my gear (payday's on Friday - woot!) I'm hopping back in.

I look forward to reading about how everyone is doing with their challenges, but at this time I'm going to be an observer and take some good notes... Wed, 6 Jun 2007 07:42:49 EST Weekly Sprint - 4 miles/w (more serious swimmers) Hey Guys!

This is one of the new challenges I've been talking about. We're going to have two categories so everyone can make the best out of it.

The challenge works pretty much the same as the other (longer) ones in that we have to post your daily millage and total BUT you have to reach the 4 miles a week goal.

If you feel like you would like to try this challenge, please introduce your self in this tread.

Aldana Tue, 5 Jun 2007 19:36:10 EST Weekly Sprint - 2 miles/week (newbies/busy folks) Hey Guys!

This is one of the new challenges I've been talking about. Fri, 11 May 2007 07:52:43 EST new to this board I started swimming two years ago, currently my workout is 5 days a week for 25 minutes in the pool. I will swim 1150 meters (mostly crawl, with some backstroke, breaststroke and kick). I put on 10 lbs this past year and want it off. I added a 1 1/2 mile run/jog before work to my schedule and I am getting back to healthy eating. Any suggestions on changing up my swim to make the most of my workout would be appreciated. Sun, 6 May 2007 15:56:24 EST swimming pool etiquette i wanted to ask about two things, and also start a thread where everyone could share politeness tips for swimming. i feel as though i'm good about this but i'm also probably ignorant, and it never hurts to ask for input.

so, #1: in the pool this morning i was swimming laps when i felt a tap on my foot. pretty soon afterward another girl passed me. is a tap on the foot the universal sign for "watch out on your left"? should i have moved out of the way, or is it up to her to just go ... Tue, 1 May 2007 08:56:57 EST Long Torso Suits Kind of a random question: does anyone know a good place to get long torso competition/lap swimming suits. A couple of years ago I got a Lands End suit, which is one of the only places I can find long torso. The suit was cute and worked well for swimming laps, but the material just isn't up to dealing with that amount of chlorine 3-4 times a week. It fell apart pretty quickly - especially considering what I paid for it.

I can wear regular suits, but they're not that comfortable ... Thu, 22 Mar 2007 08:31:42 EST Newbie My name is Kelly and I'm relatively new to SparkPeople, but I am loving the site so far. I just joined this group because I thought it would be nice to have people to talk about swimming with. I don't know very many swimmers where I live (Boston).

Unfortunately, after swimming 90 laps last night, one of my arms is really hurting and a couple of people have suggested tendonitis! I've been swimming for years and have never had any injuries, so hopefully with some rest I'll be back... Tue, 13 Mar 2007 17:51:24 EST I'm back and up and running Well after what seems like and eternity, my internet connection is fixed and it's up and running. I'm in serious internet withdrawal so am getting my fix now. I logged on as soon as the connection was working again. It's so nice to be back. Thu, 22 Feb 2007 02:46:26 EST Hey I used to swim a lot & am hoping to get back to it in the next week or two. I was looking for a challenge and am delighted to have found this. Hopefully it'll help to keep me motivated. Mon, 19 Feb 2007 09:20:21 EST Q&A Hey everyone,

I'm Aldana from the main challenge and I've created this post in which you can ask anything about the challenge or swimming drills, techniques, etc.

I've been swimming with a class for almost 4 years, 3x a week (I think I skipped like 10 class total :P, yes, I'm a water sports freak); I've also went to a couple of open water comps and would like to pass on any information you might need.

Hope to hear from you guys soon,

Aldana Tue, 23 Jan 2007 21:13:29 EST total amount to date total swimming from 1/1/07 todate: 2.59 miles 88 Sat, 13 Jan 2007 09:04:24 EST English Channel, Individual Contest, Swim 42 miles Hello to all!
Our newest challenge is to swim the English Channel.
