Two hours well spent!

Does anyone else here do any volunteer... Fri, 5 Jun 2009 16:41:57 EST New here! Hi! I'm Kim, and for the past 10 months I have been walking 2 of my dogs. They are Leo the Rat Terrier and LadyBug the Cocker Spaniel. What wonderful walking buddies they are! They see me tying up my sneakers and they get very excited. :) Every night we walk about 3 miles. Here in Florida sometimes it's necessary to hose them down a bit before they walk...they hate that part but it does keep them cooler. Also, I just bought a combo water bottle/flip down bowl so they can take a break ... Tue, 2 Jun 2009 20:50:12 EST New Member Hey all,

I have two dogs. We've had one, a pit bull mix, for about a year and a half. The other, a rottweiler mix, we are still in the process of adopting (we're officially "fostering-to-adopt").

Good to see everyone.
Robb Sun, 31 May 2009 22:20:35 EST clicker anyone? Hi...

I am thinking of trying to train my dog/puppy and would like to give clicker training a go...

has anyone got any hints and tips about using this form of training?

any ideas on treats/rewards that are not food based as Pickle doesn't like to eat and do anything else at the same time (unlike me *grin*)?

Thanks in advance Wed, 27 May 2009 16:48:24 EST Disgusting dog habits The dogs are loving the new house, and especially the huge back yard. But Maggie, especially, has become quite the scavenger. Between snacking on long-dead lizard carcasses and grazing in the cat litter box, YUCK! Between snacking on long-dead lizard carcasses and grazing in the cat litter box, YUCK! Wed, 20 May 2009 13:04:45 EST Walkin' Niles Hello to all, my major source of motivation is my wonderful white shepard-lab mix...Niles. He loves to make his way around the block, just as all the children are waiting outdoors for the morning school bus...we have to stop and say hello to each kid. He has always been the one to make sure I get up and greet the morning after we return home I am ready to start my strength workouts and look forward to a day full of adventure. I am so glad there is a team of folks out there who also find thei... Wed, 20 May 2009 11:52:26 EST Alphabet Game OK, let's try another game, and I'm totally making this up as I go! LOL!!!

Starting with "A" we'll work our way through the alphabet, and then start all over as needed. When you reply, you have to come up with a positive word beginning with the letter that falls to you. In addition, if that letter is also the first letter of your screen name, Give a Goodie! Let's see how and where this goes! Mon, 4 May 2009 23:51:02 EST Pickle *wags tail* & Judith *waves nervously* Hi...

I thought I would introduce myself and Pickle. Pickle is a 9.5 month old mixed baby... a love muffin if ever there was one. I've had her 5 months (about) and I am still adjusting. I never had a puppy before! She is a lurcher cross so not a small bundle of fluff. She is black with grey hairs.. long haired. I am still working on getting a photo on the internet... can't wait to share.

Pickle is turbocharged and always wanting to walk. This helps me. We have fun toge... Thu, 30 Apr 2009 16:59:25 EST Ultra dog On Saturday my dog (Socks) and I ran a 40 mile trail race in Lawrence, Kansas, which Socks completed in very cute fashion. The race was wonderful, so muddy that I am still trying to get mud out of my toes and I can't remember ever being as tired as I was on the trail.

But what could be better than running around the forrest on a Saturday with your dog, especially when two years ago I was struggeling with running half a mile? My dogs have been with me the whole time, making ever... Tue, 28 Apr 2009 13:38:15 EST Hello form NOVA Hi, I am Robin and have been with SP for a little over a year. I live in Northern Va, just 30 minutes outside of Washington, D.C. Two of my biggest motivators are my high energy Boxers, Bacchus and Maddie. They have been my walking partners since I adopted them but lately we've been jogging and doing outside interval training. I can jog with them together or one on one. We also do some playing in the back yard too, boxers love to well box (no I don't really box them but they do have a fun sty... Sun, 19 Apr 2009 10:29:37 EST Incredible weather! Yesterday was a landmark day for dog walking - my first t-shirt day of the season! It was sunny, without much wind, and it got into the low 60s. I take two of my dogs 2 miles on a bike trail nearly every day it's above freezing and not icy. It was wonderful to leave my sweatshirt in the van and walk without a coat.

Today, it's going to be near 70, and I'm pulling out the shorts, even if it means shaving my legs LOL! Wed, 15 Apr 2009 09:52:01 EST Give a Goodie 1

And we're off! Sun, 12 Apr 2009 22:50:03 EST Hello from Maine I have been a Spark a few months but just started looking for more teams. This one sounds perfect for me. Jenn Thu, 9 Apr 2009 18:56:55 EST Just a complaint... I'm sick of snow! Here in Wisconsin we've had a few spring-like days, but got up this morning to freezing rain and snow that's supposed to continue until Tuesday.

My 'skinny naked dogs' do not enjoy walking - even with coats on - when the weather is cold and wet, so it looks like I'm exercising on my own today.

I want spring! Sun, 5 Apr 2009 10:41:24 EST Posting because nobody else has in April! I'm in the process of buying a house - tiny house with a big back yard. I'm looking forward to getting moved and being able to run and play in the yard with my dogs! In the meantime, they're taking a backseat to all the paperwork and prepping I'm doing. Poor babies. (And poor me, I miss the exercise time with them!)
68 Fri, 3 Apr 2009 12:15:08 EST New to Team Hi, Folks -

I've been on SP since early Feb., but just joined this team.

I have 4 Italian Greyhounds and am involved in training, conditioning and competing in Rally and amateur racing. I'm also involved in rescue and foster a few dogs every year. I currently have a 6 lb. cutie recovering from patella surgery.

My dogs are my main motivation to exercise, and we're all hoping the weather warms up to make our forays outside much nicer!

Glad to be here... Fri, 27 Mar 2009 14:48:50 EST New to SparkPeople Hi all! My name is Nancy. I am new to the group and wanted to introduce myself. I am a dog motivator but my dogs also have motivated me. I show my dogs (Cardigan Welsh Corgis) in agility. My weight has held me back from being a really great team with my dog. My 1st agility dog (Dorrie) and I got our MACH (AKC Agility Championship) last Sept. and I have started a new puppy (Annie). Because of my weight, I do not have the energy to motivate her like I should. She is what really convince... Wed, 25 Mar 2009 13:05:57 EST Seattle Dog Show, Saturday, March 7th I'll be participating in the Dog Show this weekend. I have a dog in Rally at 8:45, another dog in Rally around 11:15, and a dog in the breed ring around 2:45 (Ring 8). If you happen to attend, I'd love to meet up with you. I have Skittles, Baxter, and Jack.

Liz. ;) Mon, 2 Mar 2009 17:11:06 EST Glad to have found this team! Hi everyone,

I've been on SparkPeople for about a year now, but this is my first time posting a message, so I'm excited and a little nervous. I'm so glad to have found this team! My Old English Sheepdog puppy/fitness partner, Bailey, is turning 10 month tomorrow. I'm looking for new ideas to get fit with her, and have learned a lot from reading your posts. I have to say: it's sure motivating to have a pup dragging you out for walks, rain or shine! Sat, 21 Feb 2009 11:26:07 EST Dogs and thunder We had one heck of a storm last night - lightning, thunder, rain, hail. And my dogs do not suffer quietly. Maggie in particular barks and barks and barks at thunder. I finally brought her into my bedroom to be with me and the cat, and that calmed her some. But then being alone set Cherry off, and she decided she had to make up for Maggie's quiet. All this for about an hour, around midnight.

Made me once again miss my Storm, who would shake and pant and pace, trying to find a s... Mon, 26 Jan 2009 11:18:30 EST Hellooooo from Florida I am new to SparkPeople and thanks to Barbara, I found this team.

Our dog Missy is a persistent play motivator. She is half lab and half hound (looks lab but sounds like a hound with all the "talking" and baying they can do).

She would play fetch all day nonstop, if we let her. She asks to play ball at least a dozen times a day and now I am granting more requests because I use it as a play break to squeeze in a little fresh air and exercise for me too. What a great idea... Thu, 15 Jan 2009 11:51:47 EST I thought dogs were supposed to remember! Here is my dog, sleeping next to me.

HEY DOG IT IS TIME TO EXERCISE! I thought she was supposed to remind ME! Wed, 14 Jan 2009 19:18:05 EST Hi I just joined this group after deciding that my new fitness routine is going to be walking the dogs. I picked up a book at the library called "Fitness Unleashed" and I loved it. I'm a slacker exerciser, but I think my dogs will definitely keep me going. I have two yellow labs that NEED exercise. This will be good for all three of us, I think! Sun, 11 Jan 2009 17:21:33 EST Attention Newfie Lovers We have started another spark team just for you.

We are a brand new group small but ready to go!

If you are crazy about newfies or if you just want to learn a little bit about the breed come check us out! Wed, 7 Jan 2009 02:13:14 EST Anybody exercising with your dogs? Mine are just inducing guilt right now. Yes, I've been very busy (house hunting, among other things), but it would not have killed me to take 1/2 hour a day to walk with them. Giving them lots of rubs and affection to "make up" for it, but I know it's not the same thing!!! 200 Mon, 5 Jan 2009 15:46:17 EST Walked the dogs! I got up on the early side this morning and took the dogs for a walk. I was waiting to see the stealth bomber fly over the Rose Parade route (can see it from my house, though I don't live in Pasadena any more.) Only it never came over this morning - don't know if they changed the route, or canceled. Disappointing. But it did get me out and about, and the dogs loved the walk. It was a good way to start the new year. Thu, 1 Jan 2009 13:55:40 EST New too! Hi, I just found your team and saw you have some really interesting blogs. Just wanted to say Hi! Mon, 22 Dec 2008 07:11:55 EST Anybody use a gentle leader? I just got one for Cherry (border collie mix) hoping that will calm her down a bit during walks. I just got it out of the package and looked at it last night - tonight I'll try fitting it to her and see how much of a fit she throws. Tomorrow planning on getting moving early and taking her first to the dog park, then to the vet (for shots.) Fri, 19 Dec 2008 12:36:02 EST Dog issues Uh oh...

So its -30 right now here in AB Canada... And its not fun for anyone. Anyway my 7 year old potty trained dog decides its too cold for her to "go" outside so she has decided in protest that she will "go" inside the house.

Help! Any ideas?!

Mon, 15 Dec 2008 12:35:23 EST T'was The Month Before Christmas I want to say right up front, I am a Christian. However, this is something I want to share. Sun, 14 Dec 2008 23:43:19 EST T'was The Night Before Christmas I received this from a friend and wanted to share:

Twas the Night Before Christmas

'Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse; The stockings were hung by the chimney with care, In hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there; The children were nestled all snug in their beds, With no thought of the dog filling their head.

And mamma in her 'kerchief, and I in my cap, Knew he was cold, but didn't care... Sat, 13 Dec 2008 13:05:43 EST anyone run with their dogs? It's great to see how happy they are when we run. :)~ Thu, 11 Dec 2008 21:05:15 EST Smokey Well I think I am going to have to re-home Smokey. He is constantly in puppy mode when I let him out of his crate and has to be watched all the time or he will chew something up he is not suppose to. He has a lot of chew toys, rawhides, squak toys, stuffed animals, but he always finds something that he is not suppose to get into. I cannot watch him all the time so whenever I am home and doing anything else, he has to be crated. This morning he peed on the rug again. He knows better. He ... Fri, 5 Dec 2008 19:07:09 EST Winter wonder land Hey we got LOTS of snow today!!!

Went skjoring for my first time Olive and I both loved it!!! Fri, 5 Dec 2008 18:12:19 EST Started the day with a dogfight! Cherry and Maggie were really going at it, I think over Cherry's food - though there's never been a food aggression problem before! And they've never had a fight before - in 2 years. Wonder if there's something wrong, or if one or both of them just woke up on the wrong side of the bed??? Thu, 4 Dec 2008 16:59:51 EST Need ideas I need new play ideas to do outside in the dark with my dog. She dose'nt fetch so retriving is out of the question. Wed, 3 Dec 2008 20:52:01 EST Nice to meet you all!
Hello,

My name is Angelina and I am 26 living in Alberta Canada. I use to be a member of the Canadian Military and I was in great shape but since releasing I have found it hard to keep on track.

I am engaged to be married, and I want that to be the beginning of my life with my husband as well as the beginning of a new life's journey for well being.

Can't wait to meet you guys,
Angelina

263 (Today is our first day of snow! I haven't bothered to read the instructions, watch the cd or read all the SP stability ball articles I've saved...yet... but thought if any of you have one and have routines that you especially enjoy, maybe you'd be willing to share. I'm sitting here pondering the irony of little ol' rolly polly me, sitting on my new ball doing the rolly polly. (Anybody know how to spell that? Roll-y, Pole-y. Hm... Sun, 30 Nov 2008 16:25:50 EST Muzzles in dog parks? Hi all,
I would like to start taking my dogs to dog parks - but they have not been socialized very well (all my fault!) and play very rough with each other. My concern is that rough play with a "stranger" dog would escalate to a fight. Should I muzzle them, or would that make them more nutso? They need the interaction, they need the exercise and fun - but I am a real newbie. Any hints???? Fri, 21 Nov 2008 11:53:11 EST A small but useful miracle My mom doesn't like my dog Maggie, so when I go up there I take Cherry and board Maggie. And this morning all of a sudden I realized that Thanksgiving is NEXT WEEK and I hadn't reserved a spot for her (sometimes difficult around the holidays.) I just called, and they do have room for her - hooray!!! Tue, 18 Nov 2008 12:00:27 EST Hey ya'll - I'm new too! My name is Lynne & the girls in my picture are our shelter dogs. Susie is a 10 year German Shepherd mix. We've had her for 7 years. Scarlett is a Beagle that we adopted in March of this year. She has definitely brought a lot of life into the house and has shown us that you can teach an old dog new tricks. Susie is starting to act like a Beagle, especially howling like Scarlett. Speaking of howling, the Beagle is treating us to a "full moon concert" right now. Does anyone know of a way ... Fri, 14 Nov 2008 21:33:16 EST keeping the dog from darting out the door Been trying to train my 1 year old dog not to run out the front door. If I tell her to stay or wait, most of the time she will.

However, tonight, my idiot neighbor was looking for his son and simply opened my front door and pup ran out and was gone. She likes to try to chase the train but normally is stopped by my backyard fence. After getting loose, she did run for the tracks. I couldn't find her but my neighbors son did, thankfully.

Anyway, how do I keep her from ru... Fri, 14 Nov 2008 00:26:08 EST Took my dogs walking in the rain They thought it was a wonderful thing and loved every minute of it.

Now I just need to cure my coon dog/boxer mix of her constant whining. She thinks she should get constant walks and tons of dog treats all day long and can whine for hours. She is not fun when she gets like this.

My other pup, a britney/black lab mix rarely makes any noise. She will bark once to go out, and once to come in and that's about it. She brings me lots of toys, though.

Any good... Tue, 11 Nov 2008 20:24:41 EST Anyone Raw Feed? I just replied on another thread in SP Cafe about venison, and it got me thinking. It's funny, becasue I'm fanatical about my daughter's diet, and Bob has been strictly raw fed since the day I brought him home from the pound almost four years ago. Why did it take me so long to start caring about what I was eating myself? Tue, 11 Nov 2008 10:52:21 EST SparkPeople's Walking Guide A great new addition to SP just announced by Coach Jen!!!

I'm happy announce that SparkPeople's Walking Guide just launched today! Fri, 7 Nov 2008 13:46:18 EST Why "pug" is so close to "pig" My smallest pug, little girl dog Rosie, gave herself a big treat last night.

We had split pea soup for supper. After WE ate, I put the remaining soup on the island in the kitchen (there was about 4 cups left), and forgot about it.

40 I forgot about it until I found a completely empty bowl later! And Rosie's waistline was noticeably thicker. There was no doubt whatsoever where all that soup went.

I dont' know where she put it all, but she sure... Fri, 7 Nov 2008 13:21:57 EST Got a new dog! Hi everyone! I just adopted a new dog, we named him Smokey from the Buffalo dog Shelter which has been a real handful so far! He is a black lab mixed with something tiny, weighs about 40 pounds, is 1 1/2 years old and has boundless energy! I have only had him less than 2 months. He came down with Kennel cough right after I got him out of the shelter, than had him neutered, chipped and now I am working on house and crate training and using the invisible fence with him. I have to crate him... Fri, 7 Nov 2008 07:22:33 EST Walked the dogs last night I usually do water aerobics (which I love!) on Monday and Wednesday. But joining this group has made me more determined to work with my dogs - so I skipped the class and took them for a walk instead. Can't say it was a wonderful experience, as it's been too long, so I had to do some reminder work on *how* we walk! They loved it, though, and seeing them so happy energized me. Thanks, new team!! Thu, 6 Nov 2008 11:31:32 EST I LOVE the new picture! Smiling dogs always make me smile back!! Wed, 5 Nov 2008 18:00:32 EST Hi I'm New I saw this team on Featured SP Teams and I thought, "Hey! That's me!" Bob the Wonder Dog is a 4 year old rescued Border Collie mix and the reason I run every day. His energy inspires me. Tue, 4 Nov 2008 20:14:20 EST Time Change and adjusting the "walkies" schedule Hi Folks. So nice to know that others have a canine fitness partner. Jake and I have had a couple days of adjusting to a new routine. I get off work at 5, and it is now too dark to go out on our wooded trail system. Tried walking on the road, but it is not the same. Today, I got us out at 6am for a brief sprint and then a nice walk this evening (got home early after voting) No lines here! Have to get us on a new plan, because we love our power walks. Check out his picture on my page. Tue, 4 Nov 2008 19:10:04 EST And yet another (Californian)! I'm in Southern CA, though - a world away from the Bay Area! I joined this team because right now my 2 dogs just motivate me to guilt because I'm *not* playing with them and walking them! But I'm determined that I will!! Maggie is a 7 year old boxer/pitbull/perhaps beagle mix; found in a cardboard box on the sidewalk when I went out one morning to get the paper. So much for not wanting a puppy!! Tue, 4 Nov 2008 18:29:35 EST Walking has been so good for my old dog. I have an elderly dog, Scampy, who is a 13 year old border-collie cross.

Lately, she's been slowing down remarkably. She's had lumps all over her for years, and they keep growing. They're benign, so the vet and I decided to just leave them alone, rather than put Scampy through the physical and mental stress of surgery.

Well, this fall (September), my three dogs and I decided to get out daily and get some real exercise. However, these benefits diminish greatly if you neither read productive works nor let the words sink into your mind. Reading the funny papers over a classic novel is almost incomparable. Often our imaginations create internal situations and fantasies that perpetuate those feelings until you are boiling and ready to take it out on someone else. Abraham Lincoln once said, "This too shall pass," and you can apply it to both the good times and the bad. Do you allow old drama to determine your behavior? Is there someone you just can't seem to forgive? Grudges and a non-forgiving attitude do nothing but harm both parties. We are faced with competition for jobs, a mate, and even the best parking spot at the store. Approaching these situations with grace is an important way to model good relationship skills--especially to our children. Wrong! Being lazy and not taking responsibility are wastes of time. Often the power for change is within us, but without our efforts things would fail or go awry. Bailey and I had more than we bargained for this morning! I took him to the pet store to get a bone for his teething and on the way home we got rear-ended! I bought him a car seat belt yesterday but was unable to get him fitted for it. Thankfully, he was on the floor in front of the front seat and all the way against the front of the floor when we got hit. Neither of us was hurt. I am really going to appreciate my walks with him even more!!! Thu, 19 Jul 2007 14:04:50 EST Hi! I'm new here. I'm new to sparkpeople within the last couple of weeks and I'm starting to get back into shape. I'm walking with my puppy Bailey. He's 3 months old. We're walking about 1.3 miles a night. I can feel the difference already! I don't feel every single muscle in my legs when I bend down anymore! Tonight we can't walk because there's a thunderstorm rolling in. I'll walk on my treadmill but poor Bailey will have to burn off his puppy energy in the house tonight. (We will try playing ball.) Good morning,

I've been out of town so much that i haven't been able to do much with one of my dogs named Mi. Toss, spends so much time with me that my husband thinks he's really married to Toss not me. (Toss greets him better/first when we return home again.)

Anyway, This morning was beautiful and cool, so the dogs and i took a 7 mile urban skijor. On Roller blades down by the river. Spring flowers and the birds are back, just me and the dogs. (husband doesen't skijor ... Sat, 12 May 2007 10:31:05 EST Can you run a dog too far I am training with two of my dogs to run races. I think our first one will be a 5 or 10k. Dogs are healthy and relatively young. My thought is there is no way I could ever have more endurance than them until they get old. Any concern with this? Particularly, is there anything about a dogs physiology (sp?) that might keep them from keeping up on long runs? Sat, 28 Apr 2007 15:16:16 EST Never Take a Smart Dog on a Fitness Walk I thought I'd share this funny story. My female dog, Kai, loves to go for walks, but she really REALLY loves to spend a lot of time sniffing, rather than keeping up with me. She has gotten so tired of me pulling her that she devised an ingenious plan to throw me off: She knows that I will stop to allow her to do her business, so she slows down, then squats until I stop, then leans all the way forward to sniff!! Terror!

Robin Thu, 1 Mar 2007 20:28:05 EST Like the New Logo Like the new logo, the other one was very nice. But this guy is an eyecatcher! Sun, 25 Feb 2007 10:16:33 EST Spark Teams - which ones are you a part of? I have found that seeing the different teams people are on give me a different view of the person and their interests/personality. How fun it is to learn about other people and see what motivates them.

The Spark Teams I am on:
40 Something's
Border Collies Rule
Dog Agility Enthusiasts
Dog Lovers
Dog Motivators
Dog Sports
MIXED MUTT DOG HOUSE
Rat Terrier Moms & Dads
Small Dogs, Big Hearts
You're Not The Only One Withou... Mon, 5 Feb 2007 16:12:12 EST Have to train a new dog... THATS motivation! My sheepherding dog Glynn, passed away last Sunday (a link that tells about him is at
nn.htm )

So now, I have to start working a new sheepherding dog. This one is VERY green, and LOTS of work will be needed. I will be RUNNING to keep up with this younger dog. This motivates me to lose even more weight so I'm not so pooped out at the end of my class!

PuppPower Sat, 27 Jan 2007 19:14:43 EST New here, any other members active This sounds like a great team, why isnt it active anymore? My walking partner is my dog. Those puppy eyes are great motivation. Fri, 19 Jan 2007 16:12:14 EST Today's run So today, Blaze was dancing at the front door waiting to go! She has lost the little belly she used to have and seems so much more happe! Silly, I know, but she is really a sweet dog.

Laurie Thu, 17 Aug 2006 12:31:01 EST Does your dog motivate you? Hi, I created this team because my dog makes me get up and run. She is so excited when I get up in the morning, I just can't disappoint her!

Laurie
Thu, 20 Jul 2006 13:05:30 EST
