SparkPeople Rookie Running Group Team Messageboard This is a group of people that enjoy to run, and are at various stages in their training programs. Come on in and join this VERY motivational, fun team!! SparkPeople Rookie Running Group Team Messageboard Gateway to 8K Gateway to 8K is a podrunner program designed to take 5k runners up to 8K. It's ideal for me because I'm not quite ready to train for 10k but want to up my distance.

This is an interval program and I completed week 1 today. Week 1 was run 7 minutes, walk 1 minute, repeat 4 times.

Next week, week 2: run 8 minutes, walk 1 minute, repeat 4 times.

So far so good! Thu, 16 Jan 2020 11:52:21 EST Elliptical training on Rainy Days? Hello
Does anyone have any information or guidance on how to convert elliptical running into what you might perform on the ground? I know they are very different for impact and effort, but when it rains I stay inside. I just want to make sure I am trying my very best Thu, 24 Oct 2019 08:06:51 EST New here :) Hello! I am not new to sparkpeople but am new to the team. I have been a runner for quite a while but have recently decided to start training for a half-marathon. I have done a couple in the past but not in quite some time.
It would be nice to chat with some fellow-runners! Fri, 8 Mar 2019 07:45:10 EST what brand of sneakers do you run in?

I am running in the Brooks Launch 5. I cannot believe how light they are on my feet, yet so supportive! Mon, 12 Nov 2018 19:46:49 EST Getting back into the rhythm Hi everyone! I used to run more frequently until about three years ago, at which point I basically stopped altogether. It's been about a year since I've run a 5k, and about as long since I've had a decent gym routine. So, I've decided to get back after it and find a way to create new goals. I've signed up for one race in November - and I'm starting training tomorrow morning. I don't expect to be perfect, but I do expect to give my best!

2019 Goal:
Run four 5ks, beating my bes... Sun, 7 Oct 2018 13:08:11 EST Advice? When I run a 5k race, I almost throw up after I cross the finish line, and I have to sit because I feel so faint. Then I end up with the worst headache all day. I think it’s nerves combined with running, but it’s awful. Plus I’m literally one heave away from throwing up, and I’m worried it’ll happen. I’ll be so embarrassed!
Anybody have any advice? Sat, 2 Jun 2018 10:32:24 EST I've a question My goal for running is to run a sub 30 minute 5k. Not for races or anything other than I think this would be a neat accomplishment.

I was wondering am I better to try to accomplish this by only running for 30 minutes or by running for 5k? I end up doing a run walk combo but the running typically is for more than the walking. Perhaps there is some other way to be doing this? I tried the C25K app and was bored and ended up deleting it and just running.

Also how many ... Thu, 4 May 2017 17:59:00 EST Anyone ever heard of a half-marathon relay? Apparently this is a new thing in the "Go Girl" run that's coming to OKC just in time for my birthday! 224 The idea is, two women will split the half-marathon halfway, or roughly 6.5 miles each. 312 I tried to train for a half-marathon about 2 years ago, ended up with a foot injury & couldn't complete the training or do the run. 39 But now my daughter, a 25-yr-old, has asked me to help her pick out some running shoes, so I asked her if she'd be my re... I have been trying to lose weight for almost 7 years (since I had my first child). I have decided that enough is enough! I am the type of person who will have a bad day and then throw my workouts and eating habits away until the next day, week, month or year. I have come to realize that it's okay to make small mistakes. As long as I don't give up or continuing making mistakes I will be fine!

I have di... Thu, 21 Jul 2016 15:45:00 EST Hi there I started running several years ago with the C25. I kept it up but fell away from it the last few years. Now, I'm getting back thankfully and even am considering a half marathon...which is huge because while I've done 5ks, 10ks and obstacle races, the half was always so intimidating to me. I by no means love running, but I love the way it makes me feel after. I'm putting a few questions in the question area too. I consider myself a beginner because I'm kind of starting over and strugglin... Sun, 3 Jul 2016 09:51:18 EST July - be thankful and let summer begin Never in my life have I felt so vulnerable as I have the past 3 1/2 weeks. I somehow hurt my back and up until till about 3 days ago I had lots of pain and was not very mobile. I felt weak, scared and for the first time in my life I felt I was not in control of my life. The pain started in the low back but went to the groin, low abs and hips. I just turned 53, and ran my first 5k on Mother's Day. I was very proud of myself since I have never been interested in running. Now I want to work towards a 10k then a half marathon. I definitely need help and motivation. Tue, 7 Jun 2016 22:28:56 EST Summer running is June-er-iffic! Hey Rookies!

Hope everyone has been kicking June off with a bang. It's taken me a little bit to ease into the higher temps and humidity, but I am quickly remembering why I love running in the summer! Early mornings, quiet streets... not too bad!

Mon, 6 Jun 2016 15:49:10 EST Starting Tips Hello everyone, I'm so eager to get started this evening after work but want to start off right. Any suggestions would be so I eat before I run? do I jump right into running or should I build up? I've been fairly inactive for 5 months due a fire at our home and now things are getting back to order I'd like to get this party started. Please help ;o) Wed, 25 May 2016 10:40:59 EST This time will be the charm Hey, team. I am trying to enter the world of running yet again. I lost 85 lbs with Sparkpeople a few years ago. I completed a few 5k's, a 10k, and a half marathon. However, all of those races felt very forced and were always a struggle. I want to improve my form and get to a point where I could run or jog 10 miles without having to walk. Right now I can probably do about a half mile and the most I was ever able to do without walking was probably 2 miles. I am 40 lbs heavier than my lowest wei... Happy New Year, friends! I look forward to a year of more running, accountability, and Sparky goodness.

411 Fri, 1 Jan 2016 10:37:55 EST how often do you run? I'm the type of person who tends to go full out on things and then burn out. I'm doing my best to not injure myself and be responsible when it comes to running. I've been running/walking 5 days a week but I'm wondering if that's not too much. This week I've started trying to run every other day and walk only on the other days or do a walking video and do strength exercises the other days.

So how often do you run? Tue, 10 Nov 2015 13:43:11 EST when did you call yourself a runner? Just wondering at what point you started referring to yourself as a runner or going for a run instead of a walk.

I'm enjoying the running I do but have a hard time calling myself a runner or saying I went for a run, I always feel the need to say run/walk bc while I do 4-5 miles usually, on any given day half of that may be walking depending on how I'm feeling. Tue, 10 Nov 2015 13:41:13 EST running apps What apps do you use if any?

I've been using Nike+ running for a while but it doesn't seem to like my phone's GPS so I've started using Runkeeper. Wondering what other apps people use. Mon, 9 Nov 2015 11:02:51 EST I dream of a marathon Hello Rookie's

I have wanted to run a marathon for a very long time. Wed, 4 Nov 2015 04:12:43 EST Hello all I thought it was time to join a running team here on Spark. I've always wanted to be a runner but my knees never wanted to cooperate. I'm finally doing it. I started in Sept, and have been at it consistently since then and I'm in love! It's so addicting to watch the number go up on here and on my Nike app. I'm really enjoying it, even running in the rain :) though I think snow might end up being the stay inside sign for me lol Tue, 3 Nov 2015 14:15:39 EST Quick hello I'm getting back into a fitness and food routine, so I'm getting back into my running shoes too. I don't really "love" running, but I love how easy it is to lace up and go whether I'm at home or on the road for work. I can't ever seem to get myself motivated to do long runs on a treadmill, but they're great for interval workouts for me. I'm lucky enough to live next to a beautiful running trail in downtown Denver, so I try to get myself and my dog out on that path for 3-5 mile run once a wee... Sun, 1 Nov 2015 17:47:51 EST Slow and Steady...? Hi! So I just finished my third 5k this year, and I beat my time by 2.25 minutes. I would love to tackle a 10k, but I feel I'm too slow. It will take me 1hour and 45 minutes to complete a 10k at my current pace. Is that too long? Mon, 19 Oct 2015 19:13:38 EST Runner's High I've often heard people talk about the 'endorphins kicking in' and reaching a point when running where they feel they're invincible. I'm very much a rookie runner - but I've had moments when I do feel like this - I had one the other day when I was running down a long hill - felt like I could fly and had such a smile on my face.

I found this little article about an experiment (only done on mice so far) that has identified a different chemical in the brain which causes that feelin... Sun, 11 Oct 2015 03:54:03 EST Saturday Morning Challenge One day only, 5:30 am Central time, I will challenge myself to get up an run at least 30 minutes. I challenge you to join me. Gosh, that really sounds more like a threat, lol! Comment if your in fellow runners! Fri, 9 Oct 2015 20:19:54 EST Transition from track to road I am almost done with my C25K training! I have been fortunate enough to have access to a track to run on. However, I have been working out of town for 5 months and my gym back home doesn't have a track. I'll have to transition to running outside. It's good thing because I'd like to start signing up for races. I know that a treadmill is way different than running on the road, but I expect that track to road will be an adjustment too. I'll have obstacles and hills to contend with. I'm prepared ... Tue, 6 Oct 2015 14:00:30 EST Hello! Just joined... Yay! I've been running almost two years, but I just recently started running outdoors. I would like to do it exclusively, but that would mean it would be early morning, very dark, and kind of scary (for me). Does anyone run in the dark? Do you have any tips? Mon, 28 Sep 2015 23:24:14 EST Sony Smart B-Trainer I have completed a few 5k races now. I have been proud just doing the distance, now I want to improve my speed. I am pretty new to running gadgets having used a FitBit One for 2 years and just purchasing my first smart phone 2 months ago. I have come across the Sony Smart B-Trainer via the ASICS website. I would love to hear from anyone who has used this gadget or has any valuable information about the Sony Smart B-Trainer. It is supposed to link up with the Smart B-Trainer app.
<... Thu, 24 Sep 2015 16:02:00 EST Maybe this isn't for me. I started a walk/jog program through a local running group in prep for a 5K I thought I would run in October. I have been doing this for about 12 weeks now at 2-3 times a week (mostly 2). I stretch before and after and I jog extremely slow. Some people walk faster than I jog, but my goal was to increase my distance I was able to jog and less walking and then down the road work on increasing speed. I had worked up approx. 3 mins run then walk approx. 1 minute intervals. About two weeks ag... Mon, 14 Sep 2015 11:50:24 EST Making progress Yesterday I did week 7 day 1 on my C25K. I got up this morning knowing that this morning would be an off day. It's been odd to not do my run this morning when I've done it every day since Monday. Thinking that tomorrow I'll do the next day of my run. Sat, 12 Sep 2015 21:24:38 EST How far can you go in an hour? My 5K training program is usually between 50 and 55 minutes each time. It's building me up to be able to run about 3 miles (5K, obvs) in that time frame. However, I know once I reach that and can do it consistently that I'm going to want to add distance. Without being a speed runner (alas, I'm built for comfort, not speed, and I don't expect that to change significantly once I hit goal weight), how far could I reasonably get in an hour? What's a decent expectation towards which to work? <... Thu, 10 Sep 2015 10:28:16 EST Every other run - is this normal? It seems like every other run is a good run, where I'm doing better and feeling it and it goes great. Then the ones in between are tough, it's like pulling teeth, my back hurts, I can't run nearly as much, etc.

I'm doing runs MoWeFr, strength training (mostly upper body, but also the lower body stuff that TXHRT4U recommended to help strengthen my running muscles) TuThSa, and Sunday is a day of rest. I don't think I'm overtraining - my runs are about 45 minutes to an hour, but e... Fri, 28 Aug 2015 22:10:11 EST What should I look for in running shoes I'm doing my Google homework and going to do the treadmill thing at Dick's Sporting Goods, but I thought I'd ask for opinions here. What sort of factors should I take into account when choosing running shoes? Typically when I walk my foot rolls to the outside - you can see on pairs of shoes I've worn for long periods of time that the outside of the shoe hangs over the sole.

I've seen a lot of different brands - Brooks comes highly recommended (by the sales people, so take that ... Sat, 15 Aug 2015 17:52:38 EST Making it a habit I have done C25K twice in the past 3 years - doing the Race for Life (UK) - and each time I've 'intended' to keep on running after the race - and each time the habit of running has fizzled out again.

I've read lots of articles and checked out different training plans etc - most of them led me back to Runners World.

The goal I settled on is from Runners World - aim for 30 mins at a slow pace (2mph); 2 miles non-stop; stay with that 3 or 4 days a week - this is enough to... Sat, 15 Aug 2015 03:57:55 EST How many miles I haven't run more than 10 miles a week for the last 6 weeks because of knee issues. I haven't had any issues with it for a little while now, I've just been nervous to do too much. Do you think I should follow the 10% increase rule to get my weekly mileage back up? The knee issues arose after I completed a marathon, took a week off and jumped back into training and upped my miles too quickly. The second week after the marathon I was comfortably able to do 20 miles, it was the following week a... Wed, 12 Aug 2015 16:40:22 EST Issues running/walking with my dog My dog *LOVES* going for walks, like, I walk near the leash and he starts bouncing. The issue is that he stops and smells everything. It feels like a constant fight to get him to keep up with me, which makes it hard to keep a steady pace. It's a little better when I'm running vs when I'm walking, but not much.

Does anyone else run/walk with their dog? Any tips? Wed, 12 Aug 2015 12:12:33 EST Hungry for Help ;) I run 3-5 miles a few times a week and do strength training. I did my first 10k ever back in May. I can run a 12 min mile, maybe even faster, but very conscious of not stressing joints or breaking something. I started fitness program (exercise/diet) to lose weight (lost 20 pounds) but that goal shifted to losing for health - I want to keep my blood pressure in check to avoid medications. I have the exercise piece nailed, at the moment. BUT I never got into the target BMI zone, I hover right a... Sun, 9 Aug 2015 10:55:43 EST Hi! Hi everyone, my name is Bonnie. I have been on Spark People (for the third and final time) for 14 months now and have lost 109 pounds so far.

Back in April I started a Couch to 5K program and got about three weeks into it before going on vacation, which I took a break from it since I was in a new area and didn't want added stressors to my exercise plan. I came back and my shoes started really wearing out on the insides. Due to that and choosing the wrong shoes when I finally got ne... Sat, 8 Aug 2015 22:06:50 EST I can't believe I'm running Hi! I'm newish to Spark and really new to running. I love the smartphone app Zombies, Run! It's designed for runners, but can totally be used for walkers. I figured I'd walk the whole series - I always used to joke that I would only run if *real* zombies were chasing me. :) However, their 5k app is set in between seasons 1 and 2, and they have several "race" episodes for 5K, 10K, and 20K. Since I am completely engrossed by the story I couldn't skip the "in between" stories, so I decided... Sat, 8 Aug 2015 21:12:23 EST 3 Day Streak! 104 I did 10 minutes two days ago at 3. I couldn't get the incline to work until afterwards. Yesterday I did 15 minutes, increasing my speed to 3.5 and raised my incline, but my calves were feeling like they were cramping, so I brought it down a bit. I also went for a walk with my husband last night, so I was able to increase my steps even more. Today I did 10 minutes with my speed at 3.5 and my incline raised again. My goal tomorrow is to run for 15 minutes, at 3.5 and keep... Fri, 7 Aug 2015 16:26:52 EST I'm not new to Sparkpeople... ...but I've been away too long and need to get on track. I used to run and cycle regularly, but a long run with pneumonia got me way off track. Now I tend to overthink before I do anything and end up not doing any exercise at all.

I went on the treadmill for 10 minutes this morning. It was an easy run, set on 3 with my track flat, but it was still more than what I've been doing, which is nothing. I do plan on gradually increasing my running, but I have to commit to it.
... Wed, 5 Aug 2015 12:42:34 EST Virtual Races? Have you/would you do a virtual race? After I got hooked on the "bling" from my first 5K I signed up for a couple more, but I also signed up for a virtual 5K so I could earn a particular medal I really liked. I found the virtual race to be disappointing at best; it felt pretty much like any other workout. I really missed the camaraderie of the real races.
Have you tried it? What's your opinion? Mon, 6 Jul 2015 16:51:33 EST Looking for people to talk running with My name is April and I'm from Cincinnati. I started running about a year and a half ago and I love it, but I only know one other person that runs. My husband doesn't get my obsession and I would love to have more people to talk about it with/ask questions etc. Would also be interested in friends on map my run. I currently run about 20 - 25 miles a week mostly all on my lunch break at work. Considering a half marathon, but my longest distance at this point is a little over 6 miles. Wed, 24 Jun 2015 08:05:57 EST C25K plus I finished SparkPeople's C25K-like program a couple weeks ago. I ran my 5K at the end of the ninth week of training. After those nine weeks of training I felt fatigued and not ready to settle into 2-3 miles runs or move forward into a 10K program. I needed a break but feared that if I stopped I wouldn't start again. My solution was to start over again with a different C25K using the easy first few weeks to decrease the intensity and then ease back to it. I'm in week 3 now feeling rested and f... Thu, 18 Jun 2015 10:03:16 EST Hi Hi, my name is Brian. I graduated from SparkPeople's 5K Your Way a couple weeks ago. Ran my 5K. I joined the team to stay connected with rookie runners I've met alone the way.
Wed, 17 Jun 2015 17:13:26 EST New to Running I'm just starting to run today actually. I'm going to be using a treadmill. How do you start? Is there a schedule that I follow when I run? Do I start by running a certain distance daily? Does anyone know which direction that can point me to? Thanks! 30 Thu, 11 Jun 2015 12:23:30 EST New Over 50's Grandma running :) Just joined this team this morning and must say I was impressed with the mult email responses. Great job with that. Made me feel very welcome! A little about me and my goals. I started weight loss and walking in January 2015. Could barely walk 1/2 mile. I am now down 33 lbs and just "Ran/Jogged" a 5K this past saturday. It was my 2nd 5K this year 1st one I walked. I did the spark people training to get to that running fitness level. I have had to go slower than I would have thought.... Mon, 1 Jun 2015 09:04:51 EST Want to keep running :) Hi, I've joined this team because I want to keep running. I did a C25K two years' ago - then sort of stopped running again! Got interested in Chi Running, Jeff Galloway, barefoot running.... but still didn't really get going. Have just recently come to the end of the 8-week Rookie Running Programme and have a 5k on 27th May. I really don't want to stop running after the race, but not sure how to motivate myself to keep going - need targets and goals maybe?

I'm 60 years old, norma... Fri, 22 May 2015 05:37:11 EST Heart rate too high--why worry? I know that based on the accepted formula my high heart rate for training should be around 150 (I'm almost 45) but it is CONSISTENTLY higher than that if I'm exerting anything resembling effort. I've been going to the gym and doing about half an hour of cardio per day, 4-5 days per week, for about a year and I'm now only about 20 pounds overweight, so I would call myself moderately fit. I'm Tiffany in Phoenix and as I lost weight I decided to put a 5K on my bucket list. Not sure why, because I've never been a runner, but it seemed like something I wanted to prove to myself. Well, I got talked into signing up for a race we ran last month only to learn that it was the day after I'd promised my daughter we would do the Pride Walk/Run in support of a few of our gay friends in tough circumstances. So, we did a 3K walk on a Saturday (27:38) followed by my first 5K "run" on Sunday ... Mon, 11 May 2015 01:33:04 EST ankle pains Hi all-

I'm a very new runner and very overweight. I currently weigh about 260 lbs and would like to start running for fun and fitness. However, I have noticed that walking around, walking up and down stairs alone makes my ankles and knees hurt. Any suggestions to avoid these things as I don't want to give myself a "way out" of this activity.

Thank you,
Neela Thu, 16 Apr 2015 14:44:41 EST Excellent article for those who doubt

-you-from-the-front-of-the-pack-to-the
-back/

Loved reading through this. Sat, 11 Apr 2015 09:27:05 EST *wave* Helllo! Hi! I'm Andrea! I started running about 4 years ago and fell in love with it immediately. I don't know why I ever thought I'd hate it! I was interrupted from running when we discovered we were expecting our littlest mister - it was a high risk pregnancy, so I had to set running aside for awhile. Last year I found my groove again and this year I am working on running a 10K. I turn 40 next year, and I promised myself I would sign up for a half then. And then told my kids, so of course they are ... Tue, 31 Mar 2015 13:38:25 EST Hi there! Just wanted to introduce myself Hello all! 213

My name is Neela, I am currently 268 lbs and want to get into running. I am interested in the techniques you use to get started at a heavy weight. Wish me luck! 224

Thanks,
Neela Wed, 25 Mar 2015 10:52:42 EST Hello I am 54 years old, and walk every where, I have never had a drivers license so walking has been my means to get from A to B. but it is becoming a bit mundane, and i want to shake it up a bit by starting to run. I have three kids and two grandkids, am studying a Diploma in Business Administration and Advanced Diploma in Nutritional Medicine, keeping the mind active but I want my body to follow suite, an... Tue, 24 Mar 2015 14:36:41 EST Running v. Jogging? This is kind of tongue in cheek and kind of serious: I'm wondering how to define running versus jogging. Is it speed related? Is it a matter of consistency (i.e., how often you go out/week)? Is it miles covered? Are the expectations adjusted for age (I'm approaching 50 faster than I can run/jog!)?

I can go 2 miles without stopping to walk, so I like to think of it as running, but my pace is 13 mins/mile. Of course, I've only been training a couple of months, and getting my cardio t... Sat, 21 Mar 2015 15:50:45 EST are 5ks safe for couch potatoes? Hi,

I am considering signing up for a 5k race in exactly 8 weeks from today.

The thing is, I am a complete couch potato. I am very sedentary right now. I sit practically all day.

Is it unrealistic for me to attempt to do this 5k? The only reason I am considering it is to force myself to train for it and thus get more active.

Thanks for your feedback! Mon, 16 Mar 2015 15:57:57 EST Hello All Hi, I'm a 60 year old breast cancer survivor who is just beginning running. Have enjoyed running a couple 5K's. I'm hoping to up my speed and mileage. 10K here I come, lol! I just moved to Wisconsin a year ago. I'm not sure it's wise to run in 1* weather, hahaha! Hi all, I've been running for about 2 years now, but was out of the habit for about 6 months before I got my treadmill. Hi all, I'm new to jogging/running/wabbling! I did my first 5K on Thanksgiving day. Finished at 41:29. There were like 2,000 participants! I was trying to train with Sparks 5K training program but could only train sporadically because of work, school, family obligations, but I am very proud of my time, as there was time I was so de-conditioned, it would have taken me 90 minutes to walk a 5K! I'm new to the team (actually was here before but am rejoining). It's funny, I've been running nearly 4 years, but I still feel like a novice. I've done a lot of 5Ks and keep plugging away at trying to run faster or longer, and then I'll have a setback and have to build up again.... so I never really feel like I'm GREAT at this running thing. But that's okay. I'm doing it mainly to keep the weight off and because it motivates me psychologically to prove to myself that I can achieve my... Sun, 19 Jan 2014 22:48:09 EST Cold weather running Hi, I've been running for about 6 months now, and the cold is wreaking havoc on my endurance. The skin chill is fine, but it's the breathing the cold air that gets to me. I've tried turtleneck-type jackets, but the feeling of it against my throat makes me feel like I'm choking. Besides waiting to run when it's warmer (which doesn't really happen), any suggestions? Thanks! Fri, 17 Jan 2014 11:55:16 EST new here Hi I'm new to this group, but not new to SP or to running. I don't run really far or everyday, but over my weight loss journey I went from only walking (lost my first 25 lbs or so) to adding in a few mins of jogging to being able to run a full mile straight. I am currently running/walking 2 days a week with another 2 days of zumba classes for my weekly workouts. I just started up again so I'll probably add in a 3rd day of walk/run but that probably won't be until after I'm back in the habit o... Thu, 16 Jan 2014 13:27:19 EST Thanks for the warm welcome! The only time I can do it is in the early a.m so it's dark but I am motivated. I did an accelerated couch to 5k program last year successfully until an illness took me out of commission awhile but I am back. Just trying to keep up my motivation and NOT look at the app on my phone that told me I ran a 14 minute mile this morning. Did not even know that was possible but apparently it is. 213 Tue, 17 Sep 2013 09:25:29 EST Hi I'm new I am a 42 year old 1st time runner. It won't be the most scenic route, but I'm excited anyway! I hurt my back three weeks ago and it hasn't totally recovered, but I went to the chiropractor yesterday for the first time and he didn't say I shouldn't run. Feeling pretty good this morning! Just bought some new songs and ready to go!! Sun, 15 Sep 2013 06:17:17 EST Peroneal tendonitis :( I was fitted for new running shoes on 27 August and the guy only looked at the wear on my shoes before pronouncing me to be a neutral runner. The shoes he suggested gave me a case of acute peroneal tendonitis which will keep me from running for a few weeks. So frustrating!

Luckily the shop took the shoes back and re-evaluated my feet so I now have a better suited pair waiting for my ankle to heal. In the meantime, it's time to hit the pool. I have recently started a C25K programme with the intent to carry on through to being able to do about 8K three times/week.

At the moment I am running solo in Hyde Park as the days are still long but it would be nice to find a buddy to run with for safety and motivation as the daylight hours grow shorter. Thu, 20 Jun 2013 20:38:37 EST 50 plus new runner Hello everyone. I'm a new runner about to turn 53 (female). Used to jog a little when I was 40. Never very good or fast. Averaged 9 miles a week. My goal is to lose 25 lbs. after week 4 of running have lost 10lbs. But know it will now be much harder to keep losing. Other goal is to be conditioned enough to run half marathon, one day. Have read a lot from other sites on proper training schedules. Never had that luxury 13 yrs ago. Gotta love technology. At my age my concerns are much... That being said, I have been experiencing really bad pains in my shins ( I'm told these are "shin splints" ). I stretch out before and after a run, but tonight the pain was almost too much by the time I got home.
Does this get better over time? Is there anything I need to be doing?

Thanks! Tue, 11 Jun 2013 22:33:51 EST Run minutes during walk/run intervals I have been doing walk/run intervals for about 9 weeks now. First with an 8 week local Step into Running program and now on my own. I am using the C25K plan now and am having a mental block moving from week 3 to week 4 because I am so nervous about the increase in running minutes from 3 min/90 sec at a time to 4 min/6 min at a time. How do I bust through my mental block? Tue, 11 Jun 2013 09:14:58 EST Hi Everyone! Just joined and excited to find this group! I joined a Boot Camp in January for 3 weeks after basically not exercising for years. I would exercise here and there, but nothing that would make a lasting impression on my body. Anyways, the Boot Camp obviously kicked my butt, however, I realized that despite not having a routine exercise regimen, eating like crap, and letting work/family take over my life, I was still pretty tough! I was amazed at what my body could do. After that, I started runn... Thu, 6 Jun 2013 22:53:05 EST Hamstring Question Hello! I've been running for a bit over two months, usually about 3-4 miles at a time, three times a week. I feel great when I'm running, but when I stop, the back of my right thigh is sore. I think it's my hamstring. I do stretch after I run, but not usually before. For the rest of that day, that spot hurts, and usually my knee and now ankle on that leg as well. I don't want to stop running! I love it. Do you have any advice for me? It's not like I can't walk, but it definitely ache... Fast forward to 2012 and a bunionectomy on each foot. I worked up to running 2 miles 3 times a week, 6 weeks ago. After such a long time away from it, it's been awesome and I am amazed at the wonders of modern medicine. My feet aren't perfect, but I can run again and that makes my heart happy! Sat, 23 Feb 2013 12:28:38 EST Predicting half-marathon pace I've been running for about nine months now, and have run several 5Ks. Wed, 30 Jan 2013 10:41:59 EST Toenails Hi All,
I did the Disney Marathon a few weeks ago and my big toes (and feet for that matter) were very sore afterwards. My question comes to toenails, and losing them. the toenail on my left big toes was very bad, and I believe it will likely fall off. the top quarter has already disconnected, and the pain has finally lessened to the point that it does not bother me. The catch is I had a great pedicure done before the race in the event that I blackened a few, and I do not want to remove... Wed, 23 Jan 2013 09:59:09 EST Trust/Not Trust Heart Rate Monitor Readings? If anyone wears a monitor I would like to know your experiences. I wear a heart-rate & calorie burn monitor when I workout. The brand is The Sharper Image with a chest strap. I use it mainly for my cardio workouts; bicycle, C25K training, treadmill and rowing machine. The heart-rate (HR) monitor is very close as the treadmill or recumbent bike readings, but where the huge difference is the calories burned readings. For example: During my last treadmill workout, C25K training W1D2, my monitor... Tue, 22 Jan 2013 12:22:27 EST Are you racing this week? Jan 21st - Jan 27th Are you racing this week? On days I run, I try to also do some upper body and core work. But should I also be doing strength training for the lower body? Or does running count as strength training for the lower body?

I am a rookie runner currently finishing week 2 of a c25k program. Mon, 21 Jan 2013 00:28:45 EST Runing will save me... I hope I am new to the social scene here... To be honest I didn't plan on posting anything at all when I signed up. I wrote down a few of my thoughts on my blog just to be able to look back on them myself when I'm further down the road. I didn't think anyone would read them... turns out people did... and encouraged me... and it feels awesome. So I swallowed my reluctance to put myself out there and here I am.

I have wanted to be a runner for a long time. I have started running countless ... Fri, 11 Jan 2013 08:49:57 EST Looking for running buddies I live in Manhattan Beach in Los Angeles (near the airport) and I'm looking for a running buddy to keep me motivated, and maybe to do a 5k with! I am a very beginning runner, so they would need to be in the same place (or tolerant), but I'm very friendly.

Odds are low that anyone on here lives close to me -- but do you know of anyplace online where I could go to find a running buddy? Have you used Craigslist, or a running-specific site?

Thanks! Thu, 10 Jan 2013 15:03:28 EST Newbie Here! Hi I am Veronica. I am getting back into running after many years. I have been doing the C25K on the treadmill. I am on week 5 and will run for 20 mins. tomorrow and I am kind of nervous. I am hoping to run my first 5K in April.

I am excited to be a member of this team. I look forward to getting to know everyone and learning more about running. I'm a rookie runner, and I need advice. I really want to do a 5k! I'm not able to run a full 5k yet -- I'm on week 2 of an Ease into 5K program and I'm doing a fair amount of walking in between my running. When do you think it would be realistic for me to sign up for a race? Looks like it's an 8 week program.

Also, any recommendations for good rookie races in the Los Angeles area? I live in the South Bay and my family is in Santa Monica. Wed, 9 Jan 2013 20:16:48 EST Sore Calves Hi all! I have just recently re-started running again after some setbacks. I decided to start over in my journey and have started with the C210K program. I plan on running a 10K by the end of this year. I am already signed up to run a 5K in March. Anyway, I am on W2D2 of my program and my calves are really sore after the workout. I run in the Nike Free+ because I don't like the heavy feel of regular running shoes. My workout is a 5 minute warmup walk - run for 90 seconds - walk for 2 mi... Tue, 8 Jan 2013 10:11:20 EST New to the group and running overall Hey there everyone. I am new to the group and somewhat new to running. I have been running for a couple months and just finished my first 5K on New Year's Eve. I never imagined I would love to run as much as I do and find that it clears my head and releases stress. I live in Kansas so I am having to get used to cold outside and sometimes snow, but I am determined to get better. Sun, 6 Jan 2013 14:46:45 EST need to learn how to breath!! Hey my name is Ashley and i recently quit smoking, now I am trying so hard to get in shape. Only thing is when I run I'm fine for like 45 seconds then it becomes difficult to keep up with my breathing while running so it is possible for me to keep running. In the end I'm panting and am out of breath. I try to always breath in my nose and out my mouth...just doesn't work all the time. If anybody has any tips or tricks maybe even breathing exercises. Thanks for your time. Fri, 4 Jan 2013 17:18:24 EST New to the team! Hi all -- My name is Alison, I'm new to the team here and eager to get involved.

I started going to the gym two months ago, inconsistently, and I'm finally starting to develop habits.A couple people here have already reached out to say hi and those people know, a week or so ago I had a first at the gym -- five full minutes of running -- not walking or even briskly walking, but running!

Tonight I had another first -- ten minutes on an elliptical! Wed, 26 Dec 2012 19:47:45 EST New for 2013 Hi Everyone:

As I am preparing to send 2012 off and welcome in 2013, I started looking for a few more teams to be a part of and found this one.

Last year I added my first half marathon (my normal is anywhere between 1 - 6 miles) to my resume and just started a new training cycle for another HM on St. Patty's Day. I've bene a runner for a few years because I'm affiliated with the military. Nonetheless, I have found SP through a friend as I struggle and yo-yo. Working... Wed, 26 Dec 2012 08:16:38 EST 5k or hm to support Sandy Hook families I saw this today and thought I'd share it with the team. I can't possibly go to Tampa to run this race on January 31, but thought I would pay the registration fee to support the cause (it goes to help the families of the tragedy) and do a virtual 5 k race that day at home in honor of those. I thought maybe some others might want to do the same thing. Even walking it is a support and memorial to them. Here's the link

l/sandy-hook-ele... Has anyone done this? I'd rather not have to buy another gadget but I'd like to see how hard I'm working when I'm doing other exercises.
Thanks for any information! Sat, 8 Dec 2012 11:31:28 EST Couch to 10K I have an app on my phone called 10K Runner. It is built for beginner runners who haven't been running (can walk slowly for 30 minutes) to being able to run a 10K in 14 weeks. I've tried it before with success but fell of the Spark train in July and am getting back on track.

I was wondering if anyone else is doing this program. It would be nice to have the support and accountability of others.

Today I completed W1D2 at a 14 min/mi pace Wed, 5 Dec 2012 18:34:31 EST Quick Question I know that running in beneficial for so many reasons, and I really just want to be able to run.

I tried running on the c25k program a year ago, and got to like week 5 or 6, but I wasn't losing weight. It was just depressing so I quit. Well I realize now that I wasn't eating right, so no amount of exercise would've helped me.

I want to try running again, so I got on my treadmill at the end of last week and made it walking and jogging my three miles. I am currently doing interval running on my treadmill and am incorporating one of the running programs offered by spark and a program on the ipad. I have ran intervals before but my goal is to get to running a 5k or more by this next summer and take it outside in the spring. Even though I keep running the same route there is always something different to interest me. The path I run is next to a stream in a lot of places. It just started snowing here so I've seen the changes from green summer, to autumn, and now white snow. On the last run I saw more animals than ever before. I'm maybe not quite a "rookie" any more, but I'm still very penguin like. :-) SparkPeople helped me lose about 25 pounds 5 years ago (it was all of the quit smoking weight and then some!) and then I started running. I was over 50 at the time and pretty nervous about it, but now I don't know how I ever got by without it! I am just really looking for a running discussion board, I guess. 30 Sun, 2 Dec 2012 07:05:40 EST A December to Remember!
