Sun, 29 Nov 2009 13:19:04 EST New to this and scared all at the same time Hi, my name is Linda and I am from Montana. My husband and I have been married for 25 years and were blessed with three beautiful children, ages 19, 22 and 23. We also adopted three children ages 14, 16, and 17. Those three have caused a lot of stress in our family.

I have lots of weight to lose and I am going to try sparks people to see if it will help keep me on track. Any suggestions anyone has to get me in the right direction I would really appreciate it.

Linda Sat, 21 Nov 2009 17:53:42 EST Huddle Up! I'm new & have a question Hi All,
I'm Glenda from San Diego and have been using the Spark program for 2 weeks now. So far, I love it! I do have a question, though. How do I enter my physical activity, if it is different from what the program recommends? I do Power Yoga twice a week with a private trainer, and it is really intense, but I cannot find a way to enter the minutes or the activity. I have watched the tutorial and tried a couple of things, but all to no avail. Any ideas?

Sun, 15 Feb 2009 13:12:27 EST Lost another 4 inches I have lost another 4 inches in a month. The scale has remained the same but I will take the inches. 9 Fri, 16 Jan 2009 12:21:25 EST new user name FYI - Did you realize you can find your Spark page with a google search of your user name? For that reason I’ll be changing my user name but by my profile photo is the same. It's not a problem if your user name is code, but if you use identifiable information as your user ID, a simple google of that ID lists your spark page, posts, etc. Mon, 5 Jan 2009 08:25:31 EST Something to think about .... I was doing really well this summer, but then work started (I teach) and my life got crazy. I belong to the Y here but haven't gone in a couple weeks. I told myself two weeks ago I was going to make it a priority and go at least 4 times a week, but then I've been out of town on the weekends and too tired/busy to do it during the work week. I've also been eating pretty much whatever I want. I don't have time to cook myself a big meal and living alone, I don't really see the point of spendi... I teach and have summers I guess diet and exercise are like hobbies. Now that halloween candy is here...chocolate in bite size pieces..soon to be followed by Thanksgiving and Christmas...What are some strategies you use to keep the weight lost off during this time?
I really could use the advice! Fri, 3 Oct 2008 19:11:30 EST Fact or fiction anyone know? Recently I was at GNC purchasing some things and got into a conversation with the very fit and healthy looking sales man there. I explained I was stalled on my weight loss and he asked me a few questions - he said - I should stop eating my breakfast before i work out and instead - have some protein powder in water and maybe a few egg whites - rather than the fruit smoothie I have with oatmeal and protien powder... he said I should begin to lose faster that way because I am not burning off car... Tue, 30 Sep 2008 11:57:34 EST Back, after 6 weeks "off" I recently returned home from a 6 week visit with my parents in GA. They live in the middle of no where, dirt road, and no parks or trails nearby. I took this as an excuse to slack off...and have spent the past 6 weeks eating WAY more than I should, and not working out. Now, I am back home and wanting to get back into the swing of things, but I keep putting it off...anyone experienced anything like this? I need a little motivation today... We've been at this for nearly three months, and should be proud of the positive changes we've made.

They say it takes about a month for a behavior to establish itself as a habit, so after all this time I'm wondering, even if you gave up SP today, what old, bad habits do you think are gone from your life for good? And the flip side, what new habits do you think are really going to stick with you?

Here are mine:
- I've given up soda for good. ... Fri, 5 Sep 2008 08:17:21 EST What is your favorite quote? For me it is: "Make the moments matter. For the memories you give, will be with them forever."

This quote is from a card someone once gave me and it is something that I try to live by. As a kid growing up, I have so many fond memories from my parents, aunts, uncles, and grandparents. It is because of this that I had decided to become a Big Brother in Big Brothers Big Sisters. I wanted to share the experiences I had as a child with someone else and it has been a very rewarding ... Sat, 30 Aug 2008 22:39:54 EST Let's see how many of us are active today--I'm #1! I am sticking to my diet religiously. I can have between 1200 and 1550 calories a day, and I haven't deviated from it. Lately, I've been falling closer to the 1500 than the 1200, I admit, but its been over two weeks since my last weigh in and I've lost a crummy half a pound. What should I do? Thu, 21 Aug 2008 15:32:44 EST Hungry? I am just wondering if anyone else never feels hungry? I eat 5 or 6 times a day, small things, banana, yogurt, etc. I usually eat about 1300 calories, but my nutritional goal says I should eat about 1800.
I have read many blogs, posts where people say that they have eaten too much, over their calorie intake for the day. And I ponder to myself, Is this because they are hungry or are they bored?
I am just not understanding, and I hope some of you can give me a little insight.
... Is this in my head or has anyone else experienced an appetite spike when exercising more? Should I increase my calories or just retrain myself back down to 1200-1300? Mon, 7 Jul 2008 14:52:37 EST Points wheel on July 4th Today when I went to spin the wheel there was an exercise DVD listed with the points. So I spun the wheel and it landed on the DVD. Has anyone ever won one of these before? I was just wondering what kind of DVD it is. Is it a walking or aerobic one? Can't wait to use in in 3-4 weeks. What a nice addition to the points wheel. Happy 4th to all. Fri, 4 Jul 2008 10:42:08 EST Favorite foods What are everyone's favorite foods that they have tried to give up (or at least cut back on) and what do you replace it with when you get a craving? One of my favorites is ice cream and I have substituted fat free yogurt that I throw in the freezer for 45 min. before I eat it. It makes it cold and creamy. Yummy! Wed, 2 Jul 2008 11:47:35 EST Almost needed the panic button! Hey there! Well, this is a story of me going over my calories almost to the point of indulgence... and then wanting dessert to make it that much worse. My husband (who's skinny-ninny) was begging for dessert. So, I opted to go out and get something for the two of us. I had every intention of going to DQ- but, the cost of gas and our hurting pocket kept me from doing that. I decided to go to the grocery store... I perused through the bakery and couldn't find anything that hit my fancy. I... Tue, 1 Jul 2008 14:21:39 EST Not enough of carbs, fat and protein Hello everyone!

I have a question, I hope someone can help me. I started entering my food in the nutrition part, hell of a job, entering all those new Dutch foods.

But my problem is that I see now that I stay far below the amount of protein I need. For example, I need 60-something and I just had 40 today(it's already evening here). Is that bad? I've once heard it's important you get enough. I'm about 900 under the calories I need. I'm also under the amount of fat I need ... Tue, 1 Jul 2008 14:09:01 EST Would you let your 16 yr old daugter... Mon, 30 Jun 2008 21:42:42 EST twisted knee Ok I went on vacation last week and by the end of it I blew my whole progress. I gained back the two pounds I had lost and didn't do much cardio or strength training the whole week.

Now I'm back and online and I'm gearing up for starting over. What would you do? So I usually weigh myself once a week, on Sunday mornings. So I was at my in-laws this weekend and weighed myself this morning on their scale. I had lost .2lbs (YAYAYYAYYA). So then I got home. And weighed myself on my scale. It said I had lost 3 lbs.

So do I use my scale, since its the one I've been using? Or use theirs, which may be more accurate?!?!?! Sun, 22 Jun 2008 09:46:12 EST Hello! Hi everyone. I joined Spark People last week and have not gotten into a good routine yet. Don't know what I'm waiting for, 'cause I'm very dissatisfied with how I feel right now. But, I've decided to start with one goal for the week.... to write down my food intake. I have just been faithfully tracking my nutrition and fitness everyday since I started and trying to stay at or under 1700 calories. I liked it better where it was. I did it this morning and it says 190. I know there is NO way I lost 10lbs, so what's going on?? Each time I made sure to start it at 0! Mon, 16 Jun 2008 10:22:09 EST Get-up-and-go songs I'm very new to Sparks, in fact I'm still trying to figure out how to navigate the site. When I signed up I arbitrarily chose goals that I thought would be easy. One of them that I chose was "Listen to a get-up-and-go song every day". Did anyone else choose this goal? If you did, or even if you didn't, what songs do you recommend? As much as I love music, I'm having trouble finding one that encourages me to get moving. Maybe because I'd rather sit and enjoy the song! Is this normal?

Probably. It is normal for your feet to swell a little bit during exercise—enough to make a difference of about one shoe size, but some people may experience even more swelling than that. Others also experience noticeable hand swelling while running or walking. When this swelling is "normal" (not the result of a medical condition), it will usually disappear fairly soon after the exercise stops, and won’t involve othe... If I can only do one of the two, should I weight train?

Weight training is important for a couple of reasons. First, the more muscle you have, the higher your metabolism will be and the more calories you will burn even at rest. The "fat burning zone" is a myth that is based on a fact, but taken out of context.

It's true that higher intensity exercise uses more glucose and glycogen (the form of energy your body gets from foods) in proportion to fat, but remember that "high intensity" in this context means exercise that you can only maintain for a couple of minutes before bec... Sun, 15 Jun 2008 10:58:13 EST Is it true that lifting weights Is it true that lifting weights causes women to bulk up?

While on a weight lifting program, the right hormones (testosterone) are necessary in order to bulk up. Women’s testosterone levels are much lower than men’s, so in most cases, they are not capable of building large muscles.
