SparkPeople Kettlebells Team Messageboard I love Kettlebe lls--Are you trying to lose weight I love kettlebells and moved from more traditional weights to an emphasis on kettlebells about 10 years ago. I have done other things (bar bells, dumbbells, regular gyms, etc.) before this and since I focused on kettlebells I have had trainers that included more than just kettelbells (I am not in a state with a lot of good kettlebell trainers). I have been pleased that I have managed to maintain my goal weight for the past three months. But Friday, I fell down the basement steps and broke my tailbone! Major ouch! Apparently not a lot can be done for it at this point except ice and ibuprofen, although my chiropractor is giving me cold laser treatments. Apparently I will be unable to exercise for at least 6 weeks and exercising, especially kettlebells is a huge part of why I have been able to maintain my goal weight. I am terrified th... I started to use kettlebells about a year ago after finding LiveFit Revolution. I enjoyed how quickly my core became stronger. Unfortunately I got lazy and stopped doing the workouts. (LiveFit Revolution has a website and video workouts that are free.) As much as I loved the workouts and the personality of the instructor, there was too much chatter on the video for me to continue on. I recently purchased a couple Kettlebell DVD's - Bob Harper: Kettlebell Cardio S... Mon, 23 May 2011 17:13:26 EST Hello!! My dear friend, Nikki (npdsleuth) introduced me to SparkPeople and also to kettlebells. My husband and I retired to East Tennessee 4 years ago. We both went on South Beach 18 months ago -- he lost 85 lbs. and I lost 25 -- but I just couldn’t continue avoiding most of the carbs that I love (bread, pasta, etc.) and over the past six months my weight has been creeping up again. I’m thrilled to find that the Spark lifestyle allows me to eat the foods I love, and still maintain a healthy weight. T... Mon, 23 May 2011 09:06:08 EST Getting back into it Well my bronchitis has cleared up, but unfortunately, my ear infection is not responding to treatment. However, I decided to do some KB today!

I went back to the beginning with a lighter KB, 10 lbs. and did Kettlebells the Iron Core Way, Vol. 1. I was amazed at how much ground I had lost in 2 weeks. I was struggling. I actually had to rest 5 minutes between the second and third circuits. But I "got 'er done!". I think it is going to take me a while to get back to where I was. Sat, 21 May 2011 10:54:36 EST Blisters? Anyone else get blisters on their hands (kinda like you used to get on the monkey bars when you were little) when using the KBs? I tried on some workout gloves in the store, but they felt too restrictive. Does anyone else have this problem, or what do you do to avoid this? Thanks! In another post, I mentioned how I thought I would never be able to do a Turkish Get-up which I blamed on my problems with balance and a general difficulty in transitioning from the floor to standing. If I'm inside, I go barefoot or use some funny sticky-socks that I got from Iron Core. However, if I'm doing a CrossFit workout that includes kettlebells, I work out in a garage and I'm wearing running shoes because I'm outside and need to be able to run/jump rope, etc., too.

So what do you wear, or what do you recommend? I believe that they are an awesome implement, fairly simple to learn but made much too complicated by most videos and/or instructors. There is nothing "cute" about my KBs and they are most effective when used correctly. They are least useful when a trainer attempts to create entertainment from the bell. Simple is best in most things and holds true here. We want results and that is all. I'm really looking forward to meeting everyone here!
Lisa Fri, 10 Oct 2008 16:12:34 EST How can I estimate calories burned? I am starting to use the Fitness tracker to help record and encourage more exercise. I just did 45 minutes of kettlebells this morning. I did a routine that based on a DVD. I used a 10 lb bell and easily broke a sweat. The workout tends to be cardio as well as some strength training. I always feel good after doing a kettlebell workout. I would like to estimate the calories burned. I realize this is will not be exact in any way but I would like to record someting. Any ideas? Tue, 19 Aug 2008 13:04:45 EST Iron Core Kettlebell Express (Volume 3) This is a great, short workout (only 20 minutes) from Sarah Lurie. I love her previous 2 volumes so was eager to get this one as soon as it came out. Since it is so short, I sometimes repeat it to get more of a workout. There are just two circuits, but she uses lots of combination moves which makes it more challenging than the previous 2 in some ways. She includes rest periods but the energetic among us can just do swings during the breaks if they don't need as much rest. :)

If you... Hi All!

A challenge is anything you would like to challenge other team members to do! It's that simple. It can be something as a single TGU with a heavier kettlebell, or full on workouts designed to really work you. I will try to post a new challenge daily. Everyone else feel free to post as well! Thu, 1 May 2008 12:59:47 EST Kettlebells the Iron Core Way, Volume 1 45 minutes
Instructor Sarah Lurie
available at Target and Amazon for $14.99

The DVD is a 45 minute follow-along circuit with rest intervals in between exercises. (I use the rest intervals as cardio intervals, usually with step-ups on the BOSU but any cardio would work). I think it is a great introduction to KB training and very un-intimidating. Lurie leads, and there are two other exercisers in the background. The DVD also has an intro section where the exercises are expl... Thu, 1 May 2008 12:51:28 EST Ran a 10.6 mile race this weekend I know I have a whole blog entry dedicated to running and kettlebells, but I HAD to share. First, I want to say that I DO run. I have run two half marathons, and many 10k's... But I did not train for this race. I did one 5 mile run in the last 6 months. I went out and ran this race (part of the Big Sur Marathon - one of the most beautiful places on Earth!) and finished in 2 hours and 15 minutes - no speed records, but it's a hilly race so times tend to be slower. I'm so proud that I onl... Tue, 29 Apr 2008 08:13:09 EST Today's Challenge Clean and Press! How heavy can you go? Go a head and challenge your strength and see how heavy you can go - but above all BE SAFE!!! If you are struggling to get the weight up from the clean, don't try to press it! Fri, 25 Apr 2008 09:10:27 EST As Chris said - Happy Earth Day! So what are you doing today that is eco-friendly? I'm switching out all of my dd15's paper lunch bags for the reusable ones, and getting some of the reusable sandwich wrappers too. I drive a Mini, so I get decent gas mileage already. Any other ideas out there? I know this has nothing to do with kettlebells, but it's important for us to do something to help reduce our eco-footprint, too. Oh yeah - go do 20 swings! :D Tue, 22 Apr 2008 13:00:16 EST Anyone want a SNATCH Challenge? We'll do it in the style of AOS. At the end of a workout. Take a lighter kettlebell (whatever light means to you), and practice snatches - 5 at a time, then alternate sides.

Goals for times:

Beginner to kettlebells: 1 minute

Intermediate: 3 minutes

Asdvanced: 5 minutes.

Don't count, just go for time!

YEAH! GO TEAM! Fri, 18 Apr 2008 11:09:39 EST How about a Turkish Get Up Challenge? Set the timer for 5 minutes. Start as heavy as you can, and drop from there (even if it's to 3 pound dumbbells - it counts!). Go slow! This is part of the Enter the Kettlebell "minumum". I can usually get in about 8 on each side. We'll see today! Thu, 17 Apr 2008 08:33:46 EST How many swings can YOU do? Try it, and post the number here! SWING CHALLENGE!!! Wed, 16 Apr 2008 08:47:54 EST New member Hey guys!

One of my clients sent me to SparkPeople and told me there was a kettlebell group on here. In my opinion, kettlebells are the hands down best way for a full body total workout (strength, cardio, and flexibility.) I have been using the bells for a few years now and run a kettlebell studio in Atlanta called Condition.

Power to you!

Delaine Ross, RKC Wed, 9 Apr 2008 19:58:14 EST I'm really enjoying Enter the Kettlebell I strongly recommend this program! Mon, 7 Apr 2008 19:56:56 EST EXCELLENT Customer Service at Iron Tamer I ordered Dave Whitley's Power Circuit DVD from Iron Tamer about 2 weeks ago. I figured it was on back order or something, so I emailed asking when I could expect it. That same day, I got a phone call from Dave Whitley himself, apologizing for the delay (my order slipped through the cracks) and promising rush delivery immediately.

I order many DVD's (I'm such a vidiot) and things happen. I have NEVER had the instructor call me personally. I'm impressed. That is customer serv... Tue, 1 Apr 2008 13:18:06 EST New to KB Hi.
My name is Mary. I couldn't decide on a weight so got both 15 and 20 pounds, planning to return one tomorrow. Anyway, I did the instructional DVD and can definitely see how this type of exercise can do a lot. I am concerned, however, that I'm going to bang the heck out of my forearms. When I clean/rack the KB, it bangs on the back of my arm. Am I doing something wrong? The DVD talks about banging your bicep as a form problem, but it is definitely hi... Wed, 26 Mar 2008 18:06:17 EST shopping for a kettlebell today I am so excited that you have started this team. I was looking for something to post here that was already written, but in reading all the hype about kettlebells, I realized I would be doing anyone who was considering kettlebells for the first time a big disservice, so I will tell you why I train with kettlebells.

Honestly, I belong to a lot of forums, and as kettlebells started becoming more and more popular, I never thought I would use them. Tue, 25 Mar 2008 17:52:12 EST Welcome to the place to talk about Kettlebells I've been using Kettlebells for about a month now and have found myself really enjoying the switch from traditional weights. I find these "cannonballs with handles" to work me more in the way I want to be worked and with much greater flexibility. I welcme anyone who uses kettlebells, is considering using kettlebells, or simply wants to know what the heck we're talking about to join in on the conversation. Tue, 25 Mar 2008 17:31:56 EST
