SparkPeople Martial Artists Team Messageboard For Black Belts, White Belts, And Everyone In Between. SparkPeople Martial Artists Team Messageboard Relearning I used to know all of my forms so well I could probably do them in my sleep. Not having anywhere to train for the last few years and less motivation to train on my own due to major life issues i have gotten quite rusty with my forms. Miss doing them daily. My goal this year is to relearn them all. Mon, 30 Dec 2019 23:47:55 EST 2015 already! Mid January of the new year already! Wow, time flies.
So, how's life folks? I'm slooowly easing back into activities. Thanks to being sedentary after surgery and eating my emotions I've gained some weight back and lost a lot of stamina, the only way to go from here is up. Its distressing to have slid so much but...... there's a reason the rear view mirror is so much smaller than the windshield- we're supposed to look forward!

Nationals is in August, martial artists from all ov... Thu, 15 Jan 2015 18:15:32 EST Travel Do you travel for your training? If not, would you if you had opportunity? Thu, 8 Jan 2015 15:23:56 EST Resolutions Any new years resolutions? I believe every day is an opportunity for positive change so I don't have any that start on a particular day. Instead I try to eat better, make healthier choices and live within my means every day. Tue, 6 Jan 2015 15:59:28 EST A Judoka in a Sea of Kicking Arts Judo seems to be a rare thing on Sparkpeople, but it looked like this team was at least fairly active and since I'm looking for more community, here I am!

Hi all. I am a (somewhat) recent Shodan in Kodokan Judo. I'm a technician, not a competitor in sport Judo, and now a certified instructor at my dojo. It's awesome to help teach new practitioners, but that means I don't get to do as much of my own Judo anymore. As such, I have to make sure and get extra exercise outside the cl... Thu, 31 Jul 2014 10:27:21 EST Upper body cardio? I just got put into a Cam boot for the next 6-8 weeks :( I'm looking for ideas on how to get some cardio in, so far all i have come up with are kayaking (which is quite limited due to time and distance) and horse back stance punching. I'm a little worried because i am going from walking 6-8 miles a day down to almost no activity. Has anyone had to deal with this before? Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Afraid this is what i am going to look like in 8 we... Sun, 20 Jul 2014 10:56:05 EST 14 hour Test. It's so very exciting, but I know that I have a lot of work ahead of me. The senior students have been kind enough to prep me for what I'm going to face. I've learned that I need to be prepared to perform all of my forms with little to no break since I will be the only one testing at my rank. That means that I will have 11 open hand forms, 7 weapon forms and 8... Tue, 18 Mar 2014 10:13:48 EST Kung Fu-er here! Hello all!

I'm new to this group, but not new to Spark People. We learn a mix of styles but an emphasis on Northern Style Kung Fu with forms such as Tan Tui (Spring Legs) and Hsing I (Mind Boxing). I am a brown sash and hope to test for my black sash in the spring!!

I hope to learn from you all and ... Wed, 26 Feb 2014 09:19:44 EST Activity Tracker Does anyone in this forum own an Activity Tracker? If so, can you use it while doing martial arts? I am thinking that it would get crushed. I do aikido and it's the ukemi that I worry about. My guess is you would have to take it off and track those minutes separately. Thoughts? Tue, 25 Feb 2014 13:38:27 EST Hello from a Historical European Martial Artist. I have been practicing Long Sword on and off since 1999. I also do Dagger work, and Grappling as part of my groups study of the Western Martial Arts. I have been a member here for several years but am getting back to it after gaining a lot of weight back. Just looking for new friends since the ones I had when I started mostly are not on here much anymore. Tue, 18 Feb 2014 16:44:34 EST 2014 is here, how are you going to own it?! I'll be traveling to Japan in May with a group of artists from our dojos across the US. In preparation I've revamped my nutrition plan and I'm increasing my training little by little each day so my body can take the traditional Japanese training for several hours a day. We'll be there the 18th-30th, will be very intense! Mon, 6 Jan 2014 14:55:47 EST Belt test Saturday I'm a little nervous about it, it's only been 1 year since I promoted to Brown III, most people in our dojo promote every 1 to 1.5 years or so after getting to my rank. Wed, 26 Jun 2013 18:23:07 EST Advice please I started the school I'm at now in late 2000 and stayed active for a few years. In 2001 I met B and he began training with us but after we split he didn't return to class. 2004 we reconnected and renewed the relationship, I was still training but not as regularly. He never trained with us and by late 2005 I was barely training at all. Back to back spinal injuries put me out of most activities but by 2007 I felt strong enough to train again. Fri, 23 Nov 2012 14:44:41 EST Feeling spry after some success It's funny- after I start to shed the first few pounds and get back into the gym, I find myself getting into my fighting stance and throwing a few low-altitude kicks just to see if I still have the motion :) I think about how it would feel to be able to throw those same kicks back to head level... to feel that joy in getting some good air on a butterfly kick again... something I haven't done in the last 60 lbs and 7 years.

Once when I was testing for one of my latter-belts, one of... Tue, 5 Jun 2012 15:20:08 EST Still a very relaxing exercise mentally Hi All,

For me anyway, this is still one of the most mentally relaxing exercises there is. Even though it is physically demanding, a medium speed cadence of 200 + straight punches from a deep (horse) stance is a wonderful way to clear the mind.

Would anyone care to comment on what I've written above? Sun, 19 Jun 2011 06:31:11 EST Punching HI All,

Pretty much every style has a basic straight punch with a target at chest height. This is such a basic bio-mechanical movement that almost everyone can do it well. It burns calories like a cardio exercise; can be done anywhere there is a modicum of privacy; and takes only 2-3 minutes to do with moderate power.

The goal is to throw 250 of these (or more per day).

If you work out in a school/dojo/way-place/class, those punches count (if you count them ... Sun, 22 May 2011 11:44:28 EST Hey! I'm a 20 year old Black Belt in Tae Kwon Do (that's how these things are starting, right?) but I've been rather out of practice for a couple years. I had to go focus on school and then transfer 3 states away. Right now, my current focus lies in fixing my lifestyle and getting back in shape. I'd definitely like to go from practicing my forms every once in a while to at least a couple times a week. I'm also very interested in other martial arts and I hope to learn a lot here! Thu, 19 May 2011 07:44:33 EST team activity HI All,

We appear from looking at the boards to have about 45 active people.

Do you know someone that is a martial artist that is on sparkpeople, but not on this team, please invite them.

Do you know a martial artist that is not on sparkpeople, please invite them :)
Then, invite them to this team.

Are you on this team, but not earning points or entering stuff!

Please start logging stuff, especially the team goals.

Happy Mo... Sun, 8 May 2011 12:09:19 EST new team goal HI team,

Let's do some punches. Any straight punch that you do in your style is fine, so long as the target is chest height. Any stance is fine.

Just add this to your list of 'other goals' and then fill it in at the end of the day with how many punches you did.

The punches should be in the form and power level appropriate to your style. Try for 250 a day. Let's try to finish out 2500 by midnight saturday for this week !

Cheers
sparkworks289... Fri, 29 Apr 2011 15:27:44 EST Help! Mon, 5 Jul 2010 01:44:46 EST New member from Georgia Hello All, I have been a martial arts enthusiast since 1985. I started out in TKD that year and later earned my black belt while stationed in Korea. Nothing like testing for your belt in Seoul!! I am a fan of mixed martial arts and love to learn new techniques I can apply in my personal life and career in law enforcement. In addition, I love movies, music (especially guitar) and am heavily involved in animal rescue. Best wishes to all members!! Tue, 15 Jun 2010 10:10:17 EST Traditional Ways Recently Strikeforce fighter Dan Henderson and executive editor Robert Young made some disparaging comments about tradition in the martial arts (April 2010). Wed, 12 May 2010 01:19:01 EST 100,000 push ups So I was checking on our team standings for making the monthly goal and was quite surprised to see how low the numbers are. 28 people signed up for the challenge and the month is already about half over, but there are less than 400 push ups logged. I know that I haven't been doing them everyday, but I was doing 0 before I joined the challenged. Even if you can only do 5 a day, try it. 45 a day per person seems like a lot, but it's really not. Just do a set of 10 during a commercial break... Wed, 12 May 2010 01:10:02 EST Hi all! My instructor told me last class my belt test will come up extremely soon. That is rather unusual for my school as we don't test very often. So now I am in a state of panic LOL. Our tests consist of some forms and a fitness test. No Kumite or sparring yet as this is only the first belt (white with yellow stripe, so basically a white belt). Our instructors fitness tests however are legendary in our dojo and I really don't want to embarr... I'm looking forward to talking with you and participating in the challenges. Wed, 17 Mar 2010 09:46:23 EST Defensive vs. Offensive... Ok, as of 4 weeks ago, I earned my green belt in Shaolin Kenpo after 2.5 years of training. That was not a boast, but for illustration purpose. My art is primarily a defensive (with many joint locks, breaks, and lots of other pretty mean stuff meant to cripple an attacker) art form. I have been at this for a little bit now, and I am so used to being defensive, that I am having a hard time with offensive technique such as in boxing.

I've been losing weight and exercising a lot,... I started Karate ( I would tell you the style if the SparkTeam Page wouldn't keep insisting my Karate style is a profanity LOL) last year in December and now I am desperately trying to remember all the new things I am being taught. Hopefully I will improve before my teacher thinks I have a bad case of ADD. But it is a LOT of fun :o). Thu, 22 Oct 2009 14:59:41 EST The Rooz Hey, I'm Sean. I'm actually not on this website to lose weight or "get in shape". Well, I should say that is not my primary reason. I find the site a great and easy way to keep track of a healthy lifestyle. I am currently in school for the US Navy in Illinois. I am a martial artist, a traceur (well, learning to be), and I love anything that has to do with the outdoors. I love climbing, hiking, back packing, and all that jazz. Im a 25 year old english teacher in Japan (originally from canada), and I just started a new karate class last week. I'm currently a Cho Dan (ready for Ee Dan) in Tang Soo Do/Soo Bahk Do and a Cho Dan/Instructor in Haidong Gumdo. Since neither of those styles are available in my new town, I started Aikido to round out my close quarters training. I will be starting to teach Gumdo as soon as possible - basically as soon as I buy the insurance! Mon, 13 Apr 2009 00:37:10 EST Workout frequency I keep seeing that you should do strength training every other day, giving yourself a day in between for recovery. Do y'all find that this applies to martial arts workouts as well? Or do you do MA every day? I then hurt myself around new years, elbows, wrists, ankles and knees (basically the joints). I think I just went to hard and it back fired.

I then didn't test in Feb. for a few good reasons, doubting myself was one. After t... Fri, 4 Jul 2008 22:41:52 EST Hey! My name's Olivia. I'm 18 years old, and I joined this team to see if there were any other sword fencers on here. I take part in modern fencing, my weapon of choice being the sabre. It's similar to kendo, but fencing is a lot lighter and faster. I'm trying to lose a few pounds, cause let's face it - it's really hard to look good in the nearly skin-tight white uniforms. ^_^ Thu, 26 Jun 2008 19:40:44 EST Returning to martial arts Hi everyone! I'm new to this team, trying to get back into martial arts. I did some Kyokushin Karate for a couple of years in college, and it was the only sport I ever liked. But I stopped when I left school and got married. I've gained so much weight and I need to take it off and get my figure back!

Does anyone know a good (adults only) martial arts class in East Connecticut?
~Sara Sun, 8 Jun 2008 16:11:07 EST Seoul South Korea Hi everybody, I was wondering if any one on this list was going to "The 2nd World Taekwondo Cultural Expo" in Seoul south korea in July. I am going over with my son and a group of others from my club from Western Australia. Was just wondering if any one else that does taekwondo was entered or just going for a look. Fri, 30 May 2008 02:39:14 EST new member intro Hey there, y'all. I practice TKD at a family-oriented school where my husband, sons and daughter are also students. DH and I are assistant instructors. We love martial arts, it is our family endeavor, which allows us to spend nearly all of our time together. My kids are 9, 6, and 3. Wed, 28 May 2008 16:01:26 EST Martial Arts, my definite life saver I've been training in the arts since 9 years of age and had a hiatus of a few years in which and packed on the pounds, got in deep dpression and almost lost everything including my life. It's been a battle back over past 4 years, but am well on my way to being the best I can be, and family and the arts are litteraly what brought me back from the brink.

Remember always, "A belt only covers 2 inches of your butt, the rest you have to back up on your own" -- Royce Gracie. First of all this is a little different for me cause I'm not a big message board, chat, or general cyber social kind of guy. Here's the martial arts in a nutshell 1st Dan Ryuku Kempo, 1st Dan Shorin Ryu, 4th Dan Shaolin-Do (for those of you familiar with it yes I know), 2nd brown Kodokan Judo. I started Spark due to the fact that having a family has gotten me a little slow and lazy. My boys are getting a little older now and I looked in the mirror one morning and had a revelation ... Wed, 28 May 2008 00:56:42 EST Hello, another newbie! Just wanted to say hey and give a little intro. My name is Tonya, but usually go by Kitten (nickname given to me by my mom, when I was born). I am a black belt in Tang Soo Do. My husband is a 3rd degree. I had to quit martial arts about 5 years ago (soon after earning the 1st degree rank), due to fluid building in my brain. I recovered from that only to have gallbladder removed this past Christmas. I am now regaining my strength and health, and starting to begin to work toward my next r... Mon, 26 May 2008 21:03:38 EST Into: Bujinkan Budo Taijitsu Hey all! I'm a red belt that's out of practice but after recovering from some recent injuries I'm looking to get back into it!
Looking forward to hearing from you all!
Sarah Fri, 23 May 2008 17:49:41 EST Hello! I joined SparkPeople about five minutes ago, and it looks like an interesting place. In addition, this looks like a nice group to be in.

I study FILKENJUTSU, (MMA--a combination of Kenpo, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Filipino Kali, and Jeet Kune Do). I'm currently a yellow belt with orange stripe in Kenpo, but I've studied other styles in the past as well. Most notably Isshinryu and Satori Ryu Iaido.

I need to get in shape so I can progress further in martial arts and impro... Fri, 28 Mar 2008 06:42:47 EST New gal on the block Just stopping in to introduce myself.

I'm a 37-year-old mother of two boys. My oldest son is 13. He started Kempo Karate about six months ago and just earned his Jr. Orange belt.

In January, I decided it might be fun if he and I had something in common, so I've been studying American Kempo since then. I'm still just a beginner, having just earned my yellow belt about three weeks ago.

My hope is that both of us can continue for many years to come. My secret ho... Tue, 25 Mar 2008 15:07:33 EST newby Hi all
i am new to the group. My name is Tanya. I am a 4th gup in taekwondo. I live in Western Australia. I do taekwondo with my 12 year old son who is 2nd dan black belt. He was the main reason i started tkd in the first place. I would sit there and watch night after night, while he trained. then he said to me i should train too. I did and i love it.
Hope to join in any discussion with you guys.
213 Tue, 25 Mar 2008 01:47:52 EST intro post Hey all!

I just recently joined sparkpeople and I'm looking around at different teams to join.

I used to practice Shotokan Karate with SKA (got to 3rd kyu if that means anything to anyone). Then, I lost a bunch of weight (~70lbs) and then gained it all back and then some. At which point I was too embarassed to practice anymore. Weak, I know.

So, one of my goals with losing weight this time is to get back into practicing karate.

I look forward to ... Sat, 22 Mar 2008 19:59:30 EST New to this team Hi,

My name is Donna, today I'm 52. I've been training in Karate for about 15 Mos. under grand master G.J.Torres. My style is the Torres Hei Long System (Black Dragons) and have a senior blue belt. Before starting at this Dojo I did a couple years of TKD. Sat, 1 Mar 2008 14:01:03 EST What style do you practice and where? Hello, all. Just curious what the make up of martial arts practitioners we have on the team. I currently practice Wuzuquan kung fu in Jacksonville, FL, under Sifu Kam Lee. I have also practiced Chen style taiji. I have practiced shotokan in the past, but probably have a bias toward chinese martial arts. How about you? Fri, 29 Feb 2008 10:22:45 EST Krav Maga on Human Weapon! wooohooooooo!!

type=Minisite_Generic&content_type_id=
55005&display_order=3&sub_display_orde
r=9&mini_id=54986

I have not posted here in ages, but I am very excited that Krav maga is getting some attention! I really enjoy training in Krav Maga, and if you are unfamiliar, check out this link. I find it to be the most practical of the arts I have learned. Human Weapon also touches on Savate (I am a yellow glove in savate) which is ano... Sat, 19 Jan 2008 14:08:12 EST New to the team Hi everyone,
First let me say how glad I am to have found this team. I hope to find this team a good source of inspiration. I am a second degree black belt in kenpo, the problem I am having (besides weight issues) is that the school I was going to closed last march. I still practice all the time and have even gotten together with some of my former classmates. It's great when we do get together, I so miss hitting and being hit on a daily basis. Something about stinging and aching ribs/che... Sat, 19 Jan 2008 13:59:43 EST Training for martial arts This is a repeat of a message on the TKD board. I wanted to see what other input I might get.

So how do you train for your martial art outside of class? Cardio, weights, isometrics, plyometrics? There are so many different schools of thinking, I'm just curious.

For me it is a mix of weights, plyometrics, and cardio in that order, along with supplementation.
Thu, 17 Jan 2008 14:31:32 EST TEAM NAME and IMAGE Hi Everyone!!

just wanted to throw this out there, if anyone has any ideas for a better team name for picture for the team page give us your ideas, maybe if we get enough suggestions we can vote. Remember this is YOUR team too.

Also I was thinking about building a web page for the team where we could personalize the look and feel of the page and more easily make information about martial arts available for everyone. Any thoughts on this please let me know.

Bil... Wed, 29 Aug 2007 00:03:32 EST How do you entice friends to class? I'm sure most of you have done it, tried to talk that friend who is also active and could benefit from martial arts into coming to a class or two.

How do you proposition them? How do you try to get them to keep coming?

I have several coworkers that do the same martial arts I do, so we wait until the 'victim' is at lunch with us, then we shamelessly talk about class, and how much fun it is, until they either ask about it on their own, or we steer the conversation over to... Tue, 7 Aug 2007 19:12:18 EST What have you broken?? or injured? I've been doing TKD for more than a year and have cracked two toes (not from sparring though! From tripping over my gi!!!LOL) and did some SERIOUS damage to my groin muscle from trying to kick too high without stretching.

I'm sure my injuries as a white belt don't compare to some of you who have been at this for a while.
I'd like to hear your litany of disasters. Mon, 30 Jul 2007 00:49:43 EST Kata list One of my goals is to learn as many katas as I can manage to store in my brain. So lets use this this forum to list all the forms that we know, then we will be able to look up forms that we want to learn.

Please list your katas and if possible the style that they originate from.
Then if anyone knows of any source to look up kata, videos would be best, but picture forms can be good too. please list those resources also.
Sat, 28 Jul 2007 21:12:51 EST Kata / Forms I was once told that Katas, also called forms or patterns in some styles. Are possibly the most important part of Martial Arts training.

They are the "ART" of martial arts. Forms of dance, and story telling dating back centuries. but also a virtual encyclopedia of the knowledge of martial arts, they tell a story of a fight, or self defense situation, they contain a reference of how moves are to be used and applied. And they contain the secrets of Masters long dead and some forgot... Sat, 28 Jul 2007 21:06:47 EST Celebrate with me! I am in a reasonable condition and still have a few years before me before old age complaints set in. Do anyone of you have experience with so... Tue, 20 Mar 2007 07:38:37 EST motivation hi im tracy and i was wondering if any one had any advice about staying motivated i had a enjurie in august and im just know able to go to class my classe are every day of the week so i can pick and choose when i want to attend im just not motivated ive paid for my class but have only went 2 times martial arts is something i realy enjoy but i cant seem to get back into the swing of it Thu, 15 Mar 2007 12:55:42 EST spreading the spark When I talk to students, their big concern is weight and fitness. I truly believe that Martial arts is one of the best ways to promote cardiovascular fitness, and strength training using bodyweight. To sparkpeople, exercise is half the answer, nutrition being the other half, Do we need to promote nutrition in our classes for the health of our students? Is this an additional service that instructors might add? or does it dilute our focus? Any thoughts? BTW I'm crossposting this topic to other... Sun, 25 Feb 2007 09:00:58 EST Celebrating our accompli ishments! My son and I took our brown belt tests today. We did really well and came home sporting our new brown belts. I'm so very proud of my son (he's 7). Although he's very gifted, he has gross motor issues that make everything much harder for him. It is a privilege to share this journey with him. He makes me not take my God given balance and grace for granted. This is where perseverence and indomitable spirit enter into the picture. He never gives up. Anyway, just wanted to share the good news! Tue, 23 Jan 2007 22:11:08 EST Chatter Box Well.....I see that there really isn't a blank topic on this team, so I'm creating one. LoL.

I love chit-chat; how's the weather, what r u up to, that sorta thing. I'd like to get to know you all a bit more - I have read the "about you" topic. But I figure this could be a little less introductory, more a medley of conversation.

So anyhoo, I guess I'll start;
I felt really honored the last class(tuesday) b/c The Grand Master of the dojang taught the class. Although... Thu, 18 Jan 2007 10:41:25 EST Your art(s) Following my first post ever on here, someone posted that they would like to read more about some of the arts I mentioned. That got me thinking, which obviousloy got me typing.

My martials arts interest isn't limited to the practice of an art, I enjoy learning the history, philosophy, and ideaology behind different arts, whether I practice it or not. So here's my proposition:
Post up something about your art to give the rest of us an idea of what it is, or what it means to... Thu, 11 Jan 2007 07:12:29 EST How much is too much? Hi, Does anyone have a sense of if there's a limit on how many martial arts classes one should take per week?

I'm just a few weeks away from the end of my post-surgical rehab, and should be able to get back to wushu class in January. I typically take that 3x a week (M-W-F). But I'm also really enjoying the sparring class I've been filling in with 2-3x a week (M-Th-Sa). Plus on 'off' days I typically do some other strength training when possible.

Is taking an intense hou... Fri, 1 Dec 2006 09:20:48 EST Videos Got any martial arts video that you would like to share? I have learned alot of what i know through watching other people practice, and compete. Videos have been an awsome training tool in my martial arts career. and they are a great way to share knowledge.
so i figured i would start a thread for us to use for linking to videos of whatever you want to share.

please make sure that you have the proper permision to post such links esp. if the video is not of yourself.
<BR...
