Here is a support group for learning what is good and bad for our diets SparkPeople Hypothyroidism Team Messageboard Welcome to a New Year! Hi team! My sincere apologies for no activity. I admit, I have slacked off. I see a few team members have posted to the team wall, but I didn't receive notification of this. Let's get the team going again! Please, re-introduce yourselves! Thu, 2 Jan 2020 17:39:28 EST Hashimotos Warrior I have Hashimotos, which has caused many health problems, weight gain being just one thing to deal with. I'm to have a total thyroidectomy on May 14th, and am not wanting to gain any more weight. I already have 60 plus pounds to lose. I do good on a "diet" for about three days, then for some reason I get off track by eating something I shouldn't. I'm determined that I will succeed this time though. I do better with encouragement, and am hoping to find what I need to succeed on here. I need so... Mon, 20 Nov 2017 22:28:58 EST Back again... So, my name is Jenny. I found out last year that I have hypothyroidism. Not too happy about that. I exercise like crazy, cut out alot of food items and never lose weight. If anything I gain it. I told my doctor I can easily gain 5-10 lbs a week and then lose it again. Makes no sense considering the amount of calories one has to eat to do that. I once gained 4 lbs in a day and did nothing different than normal. Anyway, I'm trying to figure out a way ahead. Starting with joining Spark ... Fri, 8 Sep 2017 13:12:35 EST What works for You? I have tried several things since I was diagnosed hypo about 10 years ago. Almost seven weeks ago my blood tests showed that I have hypothyroidism. It explains a lot! Mood swings (including two days of being in tears a week), very tired, low energy, dry flaky skin, insomnia earlier in the year, foggy brain, not being able to think or concentrate, or remember and more. I've been taking medication since then, and am due to have another blood test to see where it's at now.

The area... Fri, 9 Nov 2012 03:49:14 EST Introduction Hello. My name is Angie. In 1998 I was diagnosed with SLE (Lupus). In 2011 I was diagnosed with COPD. A month ago I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism. It is more than likely that my Lupus damaged my thyroid. I'm almost through my first month of Synthroid. I am hoping this medication will help get things under control. I also look f... Sun, 23 Sep 2012 13:58:11 EST Introduction Hi Everyone! Fri, 13 Jul 2012 17:34:20 EST Hello from MD Hello. My name is Jhana, I'm 27 years old and have Hashimoto's Disease. I was diagnoised with Hashimoto's Disease in 2008. It's an autoimmune disorder, your body is confused and thinks your thyroid is foreign so it attacks it. The result is hypothyroidism and nodules that need to be poked every year, although I may have only had that done once (not a big fan of needles going into my neck).

They say you get HM from your grandmother. It typically skips a generation(my dad) and pops... Mon, 9 Jul 2012 08:35:44 EST Thyroid My Dr called last week and raised my medicine again now to 175mcg. Wed, 4 Apr 2012 13:47:24 EST Hello from Charleston, SC.. I am 50 year old female and have been hypothyroid for many years. Synthroid made me gain weight so I switched to Armour. Sun, 18 Mar 2012 19:15:29 EST Hello from Philly Just want to introduce myself. My name is Tim. I was just diagnosed with Hypothyroidism last week by my Dr. He started me out on 100mg of synthroid and I'll be taking that for 6 weeks and rechecking my levels. I've never really had a problem with losing weight though but keeping it off is a different story. I've lost over a 100 lbs 3 different times in my adult life only to put it back on. I am hoping that by opening up to strangers I will find or learn something new.

I was recently diagnosed with hypothyroidism and found it a little relieving actually. You see I have a one year old son and had lost all of my baby weight when I randomly began to gain weight. I couldn't explain it since I hadn't changed anything in my life. I'm 27 now and was 26 when I was finally diagnosed. Every other doctor told me I was just lazy or depressed. Even my family and friends thought I was lazy and just making excuses. In high... Fri, 15 Apr 2011 13:49:05 EST Iodine Heard someone talking yesterday and they said they don't have to take thyroid meds anymore because they had a change in diet and increased iodine! I have several medical problems in 2010. I had 2 total hip surgeries and could hardly walk. Since having my surgeries and joing SP I am now walking about 2 miles a day. I really enjoy this. Plus I have been drinking 8 or more glasses of water a day. I have been trying to follow the Nutritional Tracker. It seems I am not seeing any weight come off., I am becoming rather down. After seeing some articles on the thyroid, I am seriously wondering if... Wed, 16 Mar 2011 09:42:19 EST Ultrasound for thyroid Ok so I went for a ultrasound for y thyroid today. was a bit worried, the tech said that there is a large mass and the doctors will look at the results and let me know mid week next week. Has anyone else had a ultrasound? and what were the results? I have a large lump in my throat and it's very annoying. Has anyone else had this and what has been done? I am really interested in what others have been through and could use some support.

thanks Kat Fri, 4 Mar 2011 22:10:03 EST Sleep Pattern gone mad! I've had an underactive thyroid now for about 5/6 years, and I've had every single one of the symptoms, and still got half of them even though I'm on 125mcg of Thyroxine daily. One of my main annoyances is the fact that I'm tired and lethargic all day, then as soon as midnight arrives I could willingly get all dressed up and go out on the town for a boogie!!! Then, when I do eventually get to sleep, I don't want to get up in the morning and feel guilty if I have a lie in (even though a lie ... Tue, 22 Feb 2011 12:56:20 EST hi I'm new here. I have Graves Disease, I was diagnosed several years ago. I started with hyperthyroidism, but over time turned to hypothyroidism. I had been untreated for a long time, when I recently went to the doctor is when I found out I was now hypo. I have tried to keep at a healthy weight but gain instead of loose. I am glad to see I am not alone, and there is a support system. Thanks to everyone for sharing, it's truly an inspiration!!! Thu, 17 Feb 2011 19:37:06 EST Hello Everyone! I was diagnosed with hypothroidism about 5 years ago and have been fighting weight for awhile. The diagnosis took awhile because they thought I was hypoglycemic. I am hoping to find what foods work best for this condition. After reading some of the posts I have already learned that low-carbs seem to work best so I intend to implement that into my plan. Wed, 16 Feb 2011 14:35:25 EST Annoying = Venting So for years freineds have casually mentioned I should get my thyroid checked. I have pretty much every classic symptom and have for many many many years. I'm always cold, hair falls out in chunks, exaustion, depression, blah blah blah. Never went in.

So I went to a new doctor out of necessity and rather just put me back on my antidepressants they ran a whole pannel of a ton of blood tests. Mon, 7 Feb 2011 12:52:27 EST Seeing Little to No Progress I know that having hypothyroidism makes everything more difficult, especially losing weight. We have to work twice as hard as "normal" people. I am working VERY hard, but I'm not seeing much progress. I'm taking measurements (no change there); eating on the lower end of 1200-1550 calories a day, while being COMPLETELY honest in my nutrition tracker; consistently working toward staying within a "Zone" ratio 40-30-30; exercising 30 minutes a day 5 days a week on the elliptical or treadmill -... Sat, 22 Jan 2011 11:57:35 EST Spark article about Hypothyroidism and diet. I found a very interesting article recently on Spark about dieting and hypothyroidism. I have been on synthroid for nearly two months and feel absolutely no better than I did before the medication. I called a friend of mine who also has a hypothroid and she asked me my level of synthroid. I told her .05mg/day. She about fell on the floor and asked if I was reading it right. I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism at age 22 due to massive tumors. Within a year, after trying several treatments and quite a few second, third, and fourth oppinions I had to have my thyroid removed. I had a severe chance of having a malignancy and at this point it was thought that the malignancy would have already spread to my lymph glands. Through a blessing from God, all tumors were benign. Tue, 21 Dec 2010 20:40:41 EST New to the team I just joined your team today (thanks, Mauitn!). Though I belong to two other thyroid groups, I do not interact with them much. A bit of history: I have dealt with thyroid problems for 2 years now. Dec 2007 my TSH was 1.41. Dec 2008 my TSH was 45.89. The thyroid was gone. Dead. To compound things, in Aug 2008 I quit smoking. Double whammy. I gained 35 pounds in maybe three months, in spite of watching calories and mild exercise (which had held my weight steady for about 20 years). I w... Mon, 13 Dec 2010 22:20:45 EST Not new to hypothyroidism I am not new to hypothyroidism, but have dealt with it for several years. Seems like it is a constantly changing problem. I have allergic reactions to synthetic thyroid medications and liver issues that are semi related. Joining SP has helped me to live a more productive lifestyle. I hope that this team will give me positive input for living with the ranges of this disorder. Sat, 11 Dec 2010 05:31:03 EST Just diagnosed with low thyroid Back in 2008, I received several steroid injections for a neck injury I received in Iraq. I was also diagnosed with PTSD. Due to the steroids, I put on 75 pounds. Since then I have struggled with losing weight. Most recently I have been stuck between 208 and 212. Last month, my doctor at the VA informed me that I had a severely low thyroid and it may be what is adding to my problems. I am now on synthroid. I was wondering, how soon can you start seeing progress in losing weight once yo... Thu, 9 Dec 2010 07:03:11 EST Food grade Diatomaceous Earth. Have you tried it? I didn't think I would "qualify" to have this disease! But, it does run in my family, so I guess I am the lucky one... Mon, 6 Dec 2010 01:38:21 EST Nutrition Label's. What do you look for? Many people on diets watch different things in the Nutrition label's. During my first visit she acknowledged the stiffness I experience upon rising and after sitting for 20-30 min, but said it was not related to hypothyroidism. I have been diagnosed with hypothyroidism within the last 3 months. At first I was really optimistic and thought that once I started medicine if I watched what I was eating the weight would come off, but I was wrong. I have been steadily gaining weight each month since I started synthroid. Then I started reading about what people had to say about hypothyroidism and their treatment online and read some pretty discouraging s... Wed, 15 Sep 2010 09:36:00 EST Blood tests and what not My doctor (which I am looking at changing for the reason that she doesn't care about my needs, and I had to call her office just to get her to look at my blood test results) is only testing my Thyroid Stimulating hormone. I'm wondering if she should also be testing the actual thyroid hormone levels. It just makes more sense to me to test the levels of what I'm actually taking hormone replacement for. Just because my thyroid stimulating hormone is coming back normal now doesn't mean my thyroid... Wed, 1 Sep 2010 20:33:18 EST New to Hypothyroid I just got diagnosed with Hypothyroidism 2 months ago. I'm feeling better, but I'm still tired a lot. Had some issues with my doctor, currently looking for a new one. I'm down about 8 lbs since starting the meds. According to my doctor (of whom I'm looking to change) my levels are now in the normal range, but the doctor doesn't seem to think it's a problem that I'm still tired and need 10+ hours of sleep a night.
But I've got lots of questions which I will post in the appropriate section... Wed, 1 Sep 2010 20:06:48 EST going for repeat ultrasound Tuesday So, in Mar-May I had to undergo several tests to try and determine if my cancer had spread after surgery and RAI to treat. 2 of 3 tests were "suspicious for spread" and the biopsy was negative. My doc is being overly cautious and sending me for another ultrasound to see if there have been any changes in my lymph nodes. I agree that my doc is doing the right thing though. Most likely I'll be undergoing RAI again, but will try to get it scheduled for Dec. 9th because that is the day after m... Sun, 29 Aug 2010 23:20:35 EST Hypothyroidism is new to me! Good morning, my name is Dawn. I have been a member of SP for some time now and love it! I personally do not have mom does. It's funny how one little 911 call can change a person's life. Earlier this year, my mom was rushed to the hospital via ambulance. She went in to the hospital living an independent life and not taking a single med to coming out 8 days later no longer being able to live independently and taking 11 treatments and meds daily. Tue, 17 Aug 2010 10:12:28 EST Committed Hi Team. I am 60 years old and have had thyroid issues since I was 15. Had my first goiter out at 16. In all this time no person or Doctor has ever suggested foods that help or hinder a thyroid problem. I started exercising but never had any weight loss. I probably drink 20 cups of coffee a day, had no idea that affected my thyroid either. I stumbled on to this site this morning and have just been fascinated with all the info. I am so looking forward to changing my lifestyle. I take 8... Mon, 9 Aug 2010 12:39:40 EST another med increase Met with my endo today for a follow up visit. She upped my synthroid to a total of 275mcg, which apparently is a crazy high dose. Also found out that the soy is my diet is a no-no (maybe this is why my dose is so high) and so it looks like I am DEFINITELY having to give up my vegetarian diet. I am okay with that to an extent. My TSH level isn't where my endo wants to see it, she wants it at less than .3 and mine is .63 which is why she increased my meds again. I have to undergo the ultra... Mon, 2 Aug 2010 17:02:03 EST New to team Hi everyone,

I joined the thyroid community a while back but did not know about this team.

I have congenital hypothyroidism so have been dealing with this all of my life. I have had to deal with weight issues ever since I got switched to Synthroid from Armour around the age of 11, and by the time endocrinologist figured out that some people need T3 in addition to T4, I was almost 40 and was then dealing with a slower metabolism that comes with most women when they hit ... Wed, 21 Jul 2010 18:40:57 EST Feeling bummed, Dr. won't renew RX. Granted, I haven't seen him in over 2 yrs. But I already owe him over $900 and simply can't afford the visit. This is especially bad timing as I am about to start working at my new job.
It's been 3 or 4 days since I last had Levothyroxine, and right now I'm feeling like I should have stayed in bed.
Debating on what sort of options I have. Maybe I'll give him a call today. Its the first day that I've had a chance to do so. Fri, 16 Jul 2010 09:06:00 EST Vitamin D and thyroid problems After being on thyroid meds for over 10 years, my Dr. added Vitamin D to my lab test. Not sure why I started looking up issues between Vitamin D and the thyroid. Interesting enough my lab test showed I was low on vitamin D and gave me a Once a week 50,000 unit Vitamin D pill. Just started taking them this week.

Is anyone else taking these two meds together. I did find articles about the relation between Vitamin D and the thyroid.
Sun, 11 Jul 2010 08:58:41 EST Old Sparker; New Hypothyroidian Hi there! SP just keeps getting better! I've been using it for 3 years now and it's helped me in so many ways-these spark teams being one of them! I used to be super thin and never had to watch my diet (disgusting isn't it?). Exercise came naturally in fun ways-my energy level was high. Well, that was the OLD me. The new me started inexplicably gaining weight. I didn't gain fast, but I did gain. After being diagnosed with hypo in May, I kept waiting to feel better after starting Synthroid. Finally, about three weeks ago, I started feeling awesome! I had my levels tested last week, and the results came back good. But, now...I feel like I did a few months ago. No energy, my mood is sort of flat, and just feeling blah...I did miss a few doses of Vitamin D, and I had a few too many cocktails over the 4th, but I am really wondering what is wrong.

Should I call my doc ... Wed, 7 Jul 2010 21:19:21 EST Why am I soooo HUNGRY?!? I was doing great today! I had a decent breakfast, aprox. 1/3 of my calorie alotment. My lunch too, was healthy, nice balance of protien, carbs, fat, about 1/3 of my calorie alotment as well.
Right now, I am feeling like I am STARVING. My stomach is grumbling, and getting those hunger pangs telling me to EAT. I did get a snack that was about 120 cal., it helped briefly.
What do I do to get rid of the hunger????? (besides eat) Wed, 30 Jun 2010 16:36:13 EST Weight and Levothyroxin levels I saw my Endocrinologist yesterday. She reduced my Levothyroxin dosage because of the 10 pounds I have dropped. A year ago I was taking 155 mcg, now I'm on 100 mcg/daily. She says as I continue to lose weight, my Levothyroxin dosage should gradually be lessened. Has anyone else experienced this? Wed, 30 Jun 2010 15:41:03 EST Overnight - 5 to 7 pound weight gain Happy Monday everyone! I am new to this group and I have a question for all. I have been diagnosed with Hypothyroidism and I really watch my diet 6 days a week. On the seventh day if I eat more than one "free" meal I gain weight. If it is an empty carb type food (donut, cookie, cake, ice cream) I will bloat and I will gain a minimum of 5 pounds that takes me ALL week to work off! I work out pretty hard 5-6 days a week burning at least 500 calories for the workout. SO does anyone elses b... Mon, 28 Jun 2010 10:36:28 EST Really struggling wih protien I am trying to figure out how to get more protien.
For today, I am 5 grams below my minimum. O.k., granted, hot dogs aren't exactly the best meat. But I had baked beans in an attempt to boost the protien. It didn't really help much. I ended up with my carbs/calories too high.
I'm out of cheese, low on eggs (I think some of my hens are hiding their eggs). Nuts are too expensive, but I did try peanut butter on celery sticks today, but again, it wasn't enough.
I'll be having chick... Sat, 26 Jun 2010 18:50:03 EST Is anyone on T4 AND T3 replacements like me? I am on both replacements and am ready to ask that my thyroid be removed. I have four growths on my thyroid and after almost 2 years of adjusting my meds, the doc still can't get me level. Would it be crazy to have the freakin' thing removed so I can get leveled out and these growths don't have a chance of turning cancerous? Fri, 25 Jun 2010 12:42:27 EST NEW TO THE TEAM Hello Everyone, my name is Llora, I am 20 years old from California. I was diagnosed with Hypothyroidism about 5 months ago. I am starting my weight loss journey and figured getting some motivation from others with the same problem (before rather than after) is best! :) Wed, 23 Jun 2010 19:43:42 EST I M New Hi all, I have just found out that I have hypothyroidism. Went to the HealthFair in April and got my results, TSH is at 8.99. I have been a member of SP since October, been a faithful follower of diet and exercise plan yet only lost 18 lbs. Any suggestions? I have been reading a lot about it and trying to inform myself. Dr. put me on 100 mcg to start, I am 2 weeks into the meds. Help! Tue, 22 Jun 2010 13:06:51 EST It's not easy! I came across this site while trying to do research on hypothyroidism.
I've been on Levothyroxine for several years now. I should have done the researc a lot sooner, I might still have my job if I did. I did not realize that my thyroid could have been causing the problems I was having at work. After nearly 10 yrs on the job, they let me go.
I've been out of work now for over 2.5 yrs. UI is run out, my confidence level is in the tank, and my savings are almost gone. I do have a job ... Thankfully, I have a doc that listens and is working with me to make it through this. I'm still learning about hypothyroidism and all the tricks it plays on my body. I hope to learn alot through this team. I'm Grace, I'm 46 years old and have been hypothyroid for almost 3 years now, thanks to a bout with thyroid cancer and subsequently had to have my thyroid completely removed. So now I rely solely on synthoid. Needless to say it's been a roller coaster getting the dosage right, but I think we're finally there. Thankfully, it hasn't hurt my weight that much and SP has given me the knowledge I need to stay on track and be and live a more healthy lifestyle!
