SparkPeople Slow Fat Runners Team Messageboard You've seen us out there putting one foot in front of the other in a 5K or even a marathon. This team is for us slow, roundish athletes for whom winning means crossing the finish line. SparkPeople Slow Fat Runners Team Messageboard Have an event coming up? Annnnd I used to run (C25 ish) and since my double ankle injury and back injury I'm right back where I started.

Which is fine. Send flowers. yellow calla lillies please. Wed, 7 Nov 2018 14:00:56 EST Working Down Last year, about this time, I picked up running. It peaked with a Spartan Sprint in September. I haven't really run since that event. In June last year, it took me 40 minutes and 52 seconds to complete a 5k (my first!). It took me about two hours.
I'd like to reduce those times.
For now, I'm doing 5k a day, so long as it's 1 hr or less. Doesn't matter how slow aside from the threshold. Fri, 30 Mar 2018 16:56:39 EST April 2017 We need a new challenge peeps...the weather is still wet and I'm colder than Alaska, but my butt still jiggles so let's get going! Wed, 5 Apr 2017 15:21:42 EST Hello from WI Hi there,
I started jogging in May 2014; however, I have not run since September 2015. Since then, I have gained a few pounds back. Crap. I like to make excuses that my hip hurts for days after I run, and I have to use an inhaler before I run. Still, I recognize that jogging IS good for you. I just want to run/walk for health's sake. However, it's sub-zero temps in WI right now, so I think I'll wait to start back up until the weather warms up a bit. Another excuse??? I really want to hi... Sun, 17 Jan 2016 19:05:52 EST run/walking I'm going to start run/walking today. There is a local college with a huge track open to the public indoors that i will use. i''m starting really slow. 20 second intervals running 2:40 walking this week. I've tried running before and i did do a 5k in 2013 but I've had injuries since then. I since have changed shoes and do a lot of stretching so fingers crossed it doesn't happen again. Tue, 15 Dec 2015 05:45:43 EST New to the team! Hi, I'm Heather. I'm 32, almost 33, single mom of 2 girls from Virginia Beach, VA. My running/racing journey started in March 2012, when I participated in my first race, the Shamrock 8k. Every year since then I have participated in a Shamrock event, including 2 half marathons. I have done 4 half marathons total and am about to start training for my 5th that's in March. I took too much time off after my last race so I'm trying to get back into running/walking regularly again and also dealing w... Wed, 14 Oct 2015 18:46:30 EST Hip pain Been jogging all the slow fat way.. but recently having some low back pain and hip pain. Has this happened to anyone..and should I just work thru it?..or let it get better then retry...I just hate to lose any endurance that I have gained. Tue, 13 Oct 2015 07:43:21 EST Looking for advice Hello my fellow slow fat runners,
I'm new to running, and I've been using the couch to 5k program. It's taken me a long time to get through the second week and I'm looking at week 3 and I'm a little unsure about what to do. Week 3 jumps from 90 seconds of running at a time to 3 min. of running at time. I'm pretty sure I'm not ready to move forward because 90 seconds still feels like I'm dying by the end of each round. My question is whether I should repeat week 2 until I no longe... Sat, 22 Aug 2015 22:03:15 EST I am Ilenia and I am a slow fat RUNNER Emphasis on the RUNNER!! I never ever thought I would run but now I LOVE IT. I have run 2 5K's since the start of 2015 and have a 3rd one this weekend. I love the races because they are a great goal for me to work toward. I signed up for my first 10K in May and my first half marathon in October. I am excited to do this but I am most definitely the fat runner you see huffing and puffing along. So glad to have found this group. Mon, 13 Apr 2015 16:42:19 EST Go shorter, push harder, increase pace faster Sounds weird, right? No one here, that I know of, is an Olympic runner, although some of us might feel as though we train like one after a good workout.

The key to pace building is heart rate. (HRT)

Training by heart rate helps you learn your zones of levels of effort from easy to hard. If you have one, use a heart rate monitor, or app on your smartphone, to determine your zones. There's a lot of information available online, so, I won't go into detail here.

... Sat, 11 Apr 2015 07:54:58 EST Fitness Tracker issue-Really? I am walking?!!? Does anyone else find it annoying that when you input your mileage distance and time, it says you were walking? I certainly did NOT walk those 2.5 miles this morning! I may not have run fast, but run I did. I just feel insulted by this sometimes. Thanks for letting me vent. 28 198 312 Sun, 5 Apr 2015 12:57:57 EST Marathon #8 done I did post some of this on my SP blog, too:

urnal_individual.asp?blog_id=5878184

It wasn't exactly the way I had originally planned to return to the marathon distance; then again, I hadn't planned to be injured, either, hah! Wed, 18 Feb 2015 15:23:30 EST Saying hello after a long absence I know I haven't been around much the past several months. Life has thrown a lot of challenges my way, work-wise, health-wise, family-wise, and it has been a lot to handle.

Nonetheless, I've been Coaching, and personally training for my return to marathon after a 4 year hiatus (have been doing only half marathons at most). It hasn't been easy, and I'll be walking much of tomorrow's hilly route (2/15/15). But, I love our local marathon, our great Race Director is a friend, the spect... Sat, 14 Feb 2015 09:14:38 EST December holiday runs or walks, anyone? The holiday season can be very busy and stressful. Taking a daily walk, going for a weekday run, yoga or no-impact exercise can help maintain your physical conditioning that your worked all year to develop.

Fun ways to share a bit of the outdoors with family and friends is to go on a holiday walk or run event, like a Reindeer Run or Jingle Bells Run. Maybe there's a Trail of Lights near you, or one for a charity.

Or, why not gather the kids and willing adults together f... Fri, 12 Dec 2014 05:46:43 EST Time to say Hello! Just been lurking around for a couple days and thought it was time to say "Hello" to everyone. My name is Sue and I live in Northern Montana. I am a runner!! Never thought I would say that. I was the girl in school who hid in the cornfield when we had to run and waited for the pack to do a return pass and filed in behind. I always abhorred running and avoided it at all costs. Now, I wish I wouldn't have. BUT .... thanks to my darling hubby and the C25K program, I can honestly call myself a ru... So I did my first 5K last Friday. It was HARD! I only ran a tiny portion of it, far less than I had planned, but the course was mostly gravel, and unlit. It was the blacklight run. I won't go into the mass of problems the run had, suffice it to say I am VERY proud of finishing it while running most of it.

My new goal is the Hot Chocolate Run on November 9th. I run 3 minutes and walk 1 minute. I usually average about a 12:30 minute mile. It is called the Tortoise and Hare Half Marathon. It has staggered starts ranging from a 1.5 hours pace to a 4 hour pace. But, unlike any other race I have ever done, the intent is to have everyone FINISH close to the same time rather than have the race all but packed up when I finish. So, I will start at 8:00 am, while my daughter will start at 9:30 or 10:... Wed, 16 Jul 2014 08:30:39 EST Hello {other} Slow Fat Runners! I love the name of this group! Had to join, as I fit the bill! I completed the CT5K program a week ago and will be running my first 5K on July 4th. I'm so SLOW that I'm sure I'll be in last place....but that's okay! It feels so good to be running! Looking forward to getting to know you all! Sat, 21 Jun 2014 05:59:08 EST Color Run Tips? I am doing the Color Run in a few weeks. It is my first 5K. I am in a Learn to Run program which is really kicking my butt. I am excited and can't wait. At the same time I also wish I have more weeks to train for this. Everyone has a first time distance or endurance event, what was yours?

My first marathon became a half because of an injury too close to the date. It was the last point-to-point route for the organization, and on a morning when sleet threatened road conditions for nearly an hour after the scheduled start. Thu, 15 May 2014 18:17:44 EST slow fat runner wants to do half marathon next yr I have spent along time in and out of counseling. One thing that I have needed to work on is boundaries. As I have worked in these areas in my life, I came to understand that part of my problem much to my disappointment was my own lack of boundaries with myself.. As I have continued to work on these areas in my life. I came to understand until I face facts about why I have extra weight on and why I lose it and gain it back a dozen times. I haven't gotten much running in lately, because I don't own a treadmill, but I tell you what--I was at a hotel this weekend, and I did get a couple miles in on THEIR treadmill. I'm SO glad they had it, because I would never have gotten a run in otherwise! (And I spent a lot of the weekend eating!)

I'm going to challenge myself to get in at least 5 miles a week for the remaining weeks of January--I know... Thu, 9 Jan 2014 10:20:11 EST Hi! I'm a slow fat runner.! I'm 220ish and 5'8. I started incorporating running intervals of 30 seconds into my walk and my knees have been hurting. Has anyone else had this problem? I feel like I need to lose some more weight before I can start running. Fri, 13 Dec 2013 20:35:50 EST Any Running Goals for 2014 Does anyone have any special goes for the New Year? Any mileage goals? Any racing goals? I know it's early but I was thinking about this yesterday as I reflected over the past year. I do not run as much as I should so I considered making a goal of 500 miles walking or running for the new year. It may seem small to some, but it's a lot for me. Thu, 12 Dec 2013 09:26:02 EST December 2013 It's a busy time of year--I know I've decided to take time off from some of my fitness goals.

But do I have 10 minutes each day? Sure!

So, for this challenge, get at least 10 minutes of exercise every day--and post here what you did! Tue, 3 Dec 2013 09:55:34 EST What to eat before a 13K I asked this on the regular message boards, too. I just started "running" over the last couple of months. I've done two 5Ks, and tomorrow I'll run my first 13K. It's not about speed right now--just finishing. :-)

I have run 13K in practice before, but this will be at 9:30 am, and I'm not sure what to eat, how much to eat, or how early to eat. Usually, I eat my regular breakfast of oatmeal and fruit at about 8:00 am. Then I teach preschool until noon. I'll eat an apple quickl... Fri, 1 Nov 2013 08:24:22 EST Nervous! I'm running my second ever 5K today. I don't know why I'm so nervous about it this morning. It's all silly fears like coming in so far behind that I look ridiculous or getting lost on the course. Neither really matter that much. I have nothing at stake in this except going out and having some fun and exercise, but I'm very nervous anyway. The best part is that my son is going to run the race, too. Usually I'm at the finish line cheering him on in his cross country races. This time he'l... Sat, 26 Oct 2013 10:45:49 EST Back on the running wagon Good morning! I joined the team a few weeks ago, however my running program got derailed with a hip flexor hiccup. Which, for some reason, really shook my confidence. So I haven't actually posted anything here before.

This morning I decided to bite the bullet and just did some two minute jog/three minute walk intervals. It felt good. Really good. I had a couple of very minor twinges from the hip, but I made sure to stretch very well afterwards, and so far we're good.

I... Thu, 24 Oct 2013 11:01:05 EST I'm definitely slow and fat but am I a runner? Hello! I saw this team a while ago, but I didn't think to join because I didn't consider myself a runner. Now that I've read Running for Mortals and some of the post here, I realize that I am a Slow Fat Runner. I definitely still walk some along with my slow jogging, but I'm walking a little less every time.

I started adding some jogging into my walks a few months ago, and I keep pushing for a little more each time. I now have jogged for a little more than 4 miles without a wal... Wed, 23 Oct 2013 20:50:38 EST Still Here. :) and an update. Sorry I haven't been too active here lately. I've been busy with all sorts of every day stuff. I have been running a couple of days a week. About a month ago a friend of mine that used to practice massage therapy (I had totally forgotten about that) took a look at my legs and said that my calves are over developed. The nerves get smothered and the brain stops telling the blood to flow there, hence the hard muscles, calf pain, and numb feet.

He manipulated the muscles and "woke up ... Thu, 3 Oct 2013 21:53:45 EST Hi everyone Hi,

Here at SP for the second time around, the first being 2 years ago. Started back running a year ago this October and am loving it so far. Slow, but I get there eventually. I'm hoping with some weight loss to get a little faster. Nice to be here and hope everyone is doing well and injury-free! Thu, 3 Oct 2013 08:31:48 EST What is the running goal you're working toward? Mine is to be able to run a 10K (or at least run/walk it) on T-day. Wed, 2 Oct 2013 16:37:52 EST Walking and Running for Health Hi team my name is Kristie and I stared the walk/run a year ago. I was obese and diagnosed with multiple health problems including COPD but the company my husband works for asked for Miracle mile walkers for breast cancer and it was my first time doing anything like that. Since then I have been in both road and trail races. My health has been much improved. It's only a month away! I'll have another one 2 weeks later. There's a 5K walk coming up in November, too. If nothing else, my Autumn weekends are almost always filled up a little bit with walks/runs... I've done some earlier in the year, too. I may have to go back over my blogs and remind myself just how many that means I've done this year...
<BR... Tue, 3 Sep 2013 10:46:11 EST This is the group for me Hello everyone, I'm Maggie, a 36 yr old slow, fat runner from Dublin, Ireland. I started running in May 2012 on the advice of a friend and walked/ran my first 5k in Aug 2012. Since then I have done a few 5ks, a 10k and even a half marathon all a combo of running and walking. I find it hard to be consistant, life gets in the way and I make excuses so its hard to advance beyond the 3k I can currently run.

I've made a promise to myself that I am going to work on my training so I ... I started running about a year ago and completed one 5K last fall. It was difficult but I was able to run the whole way. I didn't run as much over the winter and this summer has been especially brutal and now I find myself having great trouble getting to a 2.5 mile point without stopping with calf pain, no breath, and numb feet.
My friend and I started running together and despite her being 20 or more lbs heavier, is much m... I'm most of the way through reading it (though I'm not following its running plan, at the moment) and it has been very nice to find out that running slow really is OK, that you're never too big to run, and that there are accounts of other people out there who, after no interest in sports, have turned to (and begun to enjoy!) running!

There are also great formulas for figuring out how many calories you're burning, how many calories yo... Did my first 5k in March, a 4 mile run for Boston (first time I ran 4 miles straight in my whole, entire life), and the Color Me Rad 5k in May. I even got my daughter to start running/walking with me. We did our first race together - a 12 minute mile 104 I am so proud of how far we have come. I can't remember now.

Anyway, I started walking and just kep... Thu, 23 May 2013 15:29:45 EST Help with Shoes? Hey guys...I'm new around here (not really, just hadn't been very active) and I'm ready to try to start jogging.

I need shoe recommendations for running/jogging -- something for a heavy runner/jogger with very flat feet (overpronate). I've been on Runner's World and found their suggestions but was hoping for a real life suggestion.

I just got some Asics Blur 33 this past weekend and haven't given them a whirl yet.

Help?? Anyone?? Tue, 7 May 2013 14:44:55 EST Cross-Training Question Hey everyone,

I've been training regularly for about 2 1/2 months now, starting with walking and moving up to what I call "wogs" where I walk and jog. While my lungs seem to be ready to spend more time jogging, my IT band is not. I use a roller, but I also recently read that rollers are great for relief, but the real "cure" for achy IT bands is cross-training and strengthening.

I'm wondering if traditional strength-training is the best option. What about yoga? Yoga can i... Mon, 6 May 2013 18:18:12 EST Crazy Quad pain!! I've been working my way up to running for several months. The last 2 weeks, I have been incorporating running into my walking program (5 min warm up, 1 min run at 5.5, 4 min walk at 3.0 for 20-30 min). I was intially having terrible anterior tib pain on the left leg. After adjusting my stride this week (midfoot strike instead of heel strike) the shin pain is totally gone. Now I'm having intense quad pain that is right above my knee. I can feel several trigger points in this area and hav... Hi all!
A few weeks ago I started out on a modified C25K program - modified being instead of it happening in 9-12 weeks, it's stretched over 24 weeks. I did SP a while ago, but quit. I'm back, and I want to get back to running. I did C25K before and loved it, but gave it up. Tomorrow, I'm starting it again. My running shoes have been waiting for me. I'm so happy to be here! Sun, 7 Apr 2013 20:48:59 EST 10K I'm signing up to do a 10K charity race mid June.
I ran (jogged) 4.5 miles this week so I'm not worried about the distance, I can build up slowly in that time but I would like to increase my speed even over that distance.
Any suggestions?
I'm thinking I need to do one run a week that involves intervals.. or maybe the treadmill (occasionally-not my favourite option)
Thanks
Tessa Thu, 4 Apr 2013 18:52:59 EST newbie! As soon as weather permits (no blizzards, ice and 10° weather) i will be starting a running regimen. I have a park a few blocks away with a 1 mile outdoor track. My ultimate goal is to run a 5k and FINISH it. No time goals, to simply finish by crossing the finish line. :) i have heard it is great therapy and am looking forward to becoming a runner. Might be a slow runner, but the speed doesnt count right? I will still be running more and running faster than those who sit on the couch! :) Sat, 23 Feb 2013 22:08:14 EST 28 Days Later Challenge.. I have already got a little discouraged. I am very eager to get weight off, but right now the extra weight is making it very difficult to run. I have started on a walk/run program that I like.
Being an actual runner seems almost impossible right now. I know it is not, I have read and seen all the success stories. Mon, 21 Jan 2013 22:43:53 EST gadgets and stuff so, I keep hearing runners talk about garmens, pedometers, and Nike plus things and what nots. I'm still confused as to what they ARE exactly. What do they do and how do they help? I get advertising all over my Spark for the FitBit which I guess you wear all day. Come to find out it's "different' then the Garmens & Nike things.

Anyone have any ideas of what these gadgets are for and can I live my life without them? :p thanks. Sat, 12 Jan 2013 18:03:39 EST Weights training? Hi,i am wandering if we should add weights training to prepare for marathon,if so how do we go about doing it? Sat, 8 Dec 2012 22:45:19 EST Winter weather running or alternative It is getting colder here in NE Ohio and I always dread giving up my running. It isn't the cold. I know how to layer and go outside but when the snow hits I can't keep my footing on the ice. I find myself indoors trying things like Wii Fit Plus or indoor machines but hate not getting outside. I try CC skiing and love it but again can't do that every morning. Does anyone have suggestion how to get my half hour run in everyday during these icy conditions? If this has been discussed before, I apologize - but I wanted to get your opinion.

How often should we run?

I have been running about 3x per week, usually with a day or two in between. Hello Everyone. I am brand new to the team, and thrilled to be a part of it. I have been running on and off for the past 15 years. This year, I finally embraced the fact that I love running (even when its hard) and I am kicking up my events.

I have a 5K coming up October 28th. My endurance is pretty good, but I am very slow (14 minute miles). Any advice on how to speed up injury free?

Thanks!

Liz Wed, 10 Oct 2012 17:04:42 EST Just sharing my small victory :) I decided yesterday was the day to start jogging on the treadmill. I jogged for 2 min, walked for 1, jogged for 1, walked for 1, jogged for 1 (this is where my shins started burning REALLY bad) and then walked for 4. 10 min total with 4 min jogging. I went ahead and stretched more but couldn't convince myself to keep going with jogging so I ended up walking for another 30 minutes. Oh well. I was SO proud of myself for the 4 minutes I made it happen!! Tue, 9 Oct 2012 09:43:26 EST Quadzilla??!!?? I started running three months ago and the weight started falling off. It's one of the only exercises that I'm actually excited to do and I feel (more like felt) bad about taking a day off. Unfortunately, my body is revolting. I went from being able to run for 30 seconds to running for a minute to running for 2 minutes and then finally I hit the day where I could run for 3 whole minutes. The problem? I can only run for 30 seconds now. Why? Because my calves feel like they are ... Thu, 13 Sep 2012 18:17:17 EST My last place finish... On Saturday, I ran my 1st 5k. I finished in last place at 44:51. Mon, 27 Aug 2012 04:05:06 EST JUST HAVE TO SHARE So, I just really started training for a 5K coming up in December. My first walking time was 2mph, I could only walk 1.1 miles and came home winded beyond belief.
Today, I went out again, walked 3mph for 2.1 miles and except for hacking up the left over cigarette (a later goal promise) goop, I feel great. I am probably being too hard on myself, but to see that I'm much slower just frustrates me. I also feel like a 4 mile run run in the spring was easier than a 3 mile run now. I have been running for a little over a year and still overweight and SLOW!! I have been discouraged lately because I am embarrased how slow I am. I keep telling myself that it doesn't matter, I'm out there. But when my other friends who run want to go running with me, I always find an excuse to say no. I have always looked at runners, and wished I could do it, but was certain I could not. Recently i realized, there was no reason in the world that I can't! In March I "ran" a 5k and finished in 41 minutes. I am starting a running regimen. I run around the track once, and then I try the c25k program. Yesterday was day 1! I really want to be able to run the entire 5k next time. here's hoping I can! Fri, 20 Apr 2012 15:23:00 EST Hi, I'm new to this team I've been a runner, okay, a slow jogger, for about 10 years. The problem is that I am not consistent with my workouts. In 2009 I ran a 1/2 marathon and thought I was going to die at the end. I'm not sure if that made me self conscious of running or what but since then I have been struggling to get back into running. I finally decided to get off my asterisk and start up a program for myself again. I'm training for a 1/2 marathon in September 2012. I think part of the reason that I felt s... Slept 12 hours last night, and am proud. Tired, but proud Sun, 18 Mar 2012 10:56:00 EST Race Report: 12 hours around the park Just a link over to my blog...

urnal_individual.asp?blog_id=4783393
Mon, 12 Mar 2012 11:06:52 EST Training for a half marathon! Hi Everyone!
My name is Naomi. I picked up running about 2 years ago. I started with a 5k. Then last year I ran my first 8 k. In October I ran my first 10K. And now I am training for my first Half!! I have signed up for an all Women run on May 12!
I have struggled with running in the past year because last march I sprained my ankle :( It was a major struggle not being able to run for 6 months!
I am back to running and couldn't be happier. I have lost the motivation...with that ... Wed, 7 Mar 2012 13:56:43 EST what I'm doing this weekend; how about you? On Saturday, I will be spending ALL day running in circles. :) Am participating in the Delano Park 12 Hour Run here in Decatur Alabama.

This one mile loop timed run was my first ever Ultramarathon distance event back in 2009, and this year I'm doing the event for the 4th time. I've set PRs there, and a state record for 50 miles (lol not really that impressive, but a fortunate fluke of age and distance), and earned Grandmasters' Champion last year. Delano is my home town favorite ... Wed, 7 Mar 2012 12:05:12 EST Overwhelmed and under trained! Ach. I have signed up to walk a 1/2 marathon with a group from work. My company has sponsored two wellness programs over the last two years and I've lost a total of 50 lbs (though I've gained back 12 in the last 3 months) I even joined a gym.

I walked a 5K in October and did fine. But Now I am feeling really intimidated. So much so, that the stress and worry is causing me to binge. (I think)

I feel hugely pressured to participate in this 1/2 marathon. It is not until Jun... Wed, 29 Feb 2012 12:38:21 EST I'm slow, but I finish Hello all! I just found your SparkTeam and love it! It really sums up who I am. Last weekend I participated in the Cowtown 5k and set a new PR of 49:10. So very excited.

I am slowly mixing in more jogging and my next goal is to complete the Lonestar 5k in 45 min. That race is March 31. My next goal after that is to be able to run a mile without stopping to walk.

I have struggled with weight issues all my life and still need to lose 60 pounds. But I love this new active ... Tue, 28 Feb 2012 10:29:10 EST how did you start running? I became a runner because I spent my entire childhood running laps because I was in trouble. I just figured that I'd skip the part where I smart off first and just go straight to the running.

kidding - sort of

I do remember the first day I decided to actually run. I laced up what I'm sure were cross trainers and took off like the house was on fire. Hello everyone! i have to agree with others this is my kind of team! I'm not new to running. I've ran two marathons but that was about 11 years ago and in my 20's. . Since than i'm about 105 pounds heavier than i was back than and i was even heavier earlier this year but i've lost 18 pounds.

I feel like though i am starting over with running. Tue, 21 Feb 2012 04:53:42 EST Run Day I am so flustered I have so many things going on today that IDK if I am going to be able to fit in my run and I am really not trying to skip out I want to do it. I just need more hours between like 4 and 10 just a couple. Can't we pause the day for just a little bit. Wed, 25 Jan 2012 08:43:44 EST Side hurts when running.. Has this happened to you ? I am doing the C25K and after extensively warming up, I slowly jog for a minute or 2 until I get that lower abdominal side pain. I would massage it and it would go away but this has been happening more recently. My dr didn't find anything wrong and thinks that it's because I 'start too quick'. But I know that's not the case. I would think it's my breathing but I have followed books and articles on how to breathe and have good posture. Tue, 24 Jan 2012 10:40:05 EST A great blog by a fellow running sparker I read this blog today and thought it was so worth sharing. Hope you check it out and find it as inspirational as I did.

urnal.asp?id=ON2VICTORY
Tue, 17 Jan 2012 10:23:19 EST Rocking the c25k! I have chosen a c25k program and did the first day tonight. I am super proud of myself for making it through and actually running. I'm pretty sure the speeds were pathetic but I did it and that makes it a big deal for me. I walked at 2 mph and ran at 3 mph. For me that is a pretty big deal.

Here is the program I'm using:

It uses audio cues to move between walking and running. It is non stop music. I like it. Fri, 13 Jan 2012 18:42:13 EST Newbie Here I'm toying with the idea of becoming a runner. Typically I run only if my life depends on it and lately I'm kind of thinking that now it really does. Time to get fit. I really have no idea where to start. Even to walk outside and just take of running seems bizarre to me. Or on the treadmill how do I know when to transition from a walk to a run? I really am feeling dumb right now :)

Jennifer Tue, 10 Jan 2012 21:06:05 EST Still plenty fat but need to get slower.... Hi, SloFs!

I posted this in my Jeff Galloway team but I also want to ask here because you all may not be in that team and besides, I feel a real heart connection with this team.

I'm training for a half and doing one day per week of long slow distance. Today I was at least a minute faster pace than recommended. I'm already slow enough that it's pretty tough for me to run any slower.

Any tips on how to slow down a bit? Mon, 2 Jan 2012 14:58:43 EST Jeff Galloway Training On Day Two of DYI Jeff Galloway training for the half marathon. I'm waiting for the book to arrive so I've been making my best guess at what a program might look like. Today I went to our local track and ran cadence drills and acceleration gliders. Not much gliding going on that I could see.

I did the max recommended number of drills as stated in "Running to 100". Total time was only 35 minute and that includes 10 minutes of walking warm up and cool down time. This is a huge cutba... Fri, 30 Dec 2011 23:13:35 EST Excited, motivated & happy! Join me? Hi, my wonderful slow fat teamies!

I am starting my Jeff Galloway Run/Walk Half Marathon training today and I am SO EXCITED. I'm buzzing with positive energy and anticipation. I have NEVER felt this way about a run in all the time I"ve been sparking along.

Reading "Running to 100" and shifting my emphasis to having an enjoyable experience with running for the rest of my life has made a huge difference. I've always been a competitive person; not always an unuseful charact... Wed, 28 Dec 2011 16:45:26 EST What next? I am so excited I am on week 9 of C25K ! I started the program two other times and got stuck on week 5 so I am elated that I can acutally do this!!! I can run the whole 30 minutes, but my pace is really slow, I'm at about a 14 minute mile. My question is what should I do next? I want to run a 5K in March do I just keep adding minutes until I'm actually completing the 5K? I see a lot of talk about interval training, but it's all very vague should I add intervals and if so do you have any r... Tue, 27 Dec 2011 14:33:30 EST Running to 100 Started reading Jeff Galloway's "Running to 100". What a great book! Right on for this slow fat older runner. Anyone else read or reading it?

One thing I'm balking at is the LONG walking warmup that he recommends. My mind is yelping "But that will take too much time!" Mon, 26 Dec 2011 17:14:34 EST Calling all Mizuno Wave Alchemy Owners I own a pair - wave alchemy 10. I was wondering when abouts people replaced their shoes? Hi all!
I am a former running junkie focused on training for my first half marathon. I am recommiting myself to fitness and looking forward to seeing progress, and looser pants (loose clothing is the best feeling, is it not?)
Anyway, I hope to find a buddy to keep me on track. I am currently looking to run at least 3 times a week.
Best,
Saucony Wed, 21 Dec 2011 15:03:49 EST Pace and Distance Given that we are all slow, fat runners, I was curious what you define as slow, and at what distances you are all running at.

I am in week 2 of the C25K program and walk slow (19 min/mi) and run a decent speed (12 min/mi). I average 15:41/mi. My furthest distance since returning from a calf injury in September is 3.44 miles. I usually run each week of C25K twice back to back, because I am trying to run longer. I use C25K to help me get faster and walk less.

I am stil... Mon, 12 Dec 2011 00:36:23 EST I think I fit thebill I am definitely a slow fat runner. I started running in April or so of this year. I ran a 5k in September and a 10k in November. I have a half-marathon scheduled for May.

I am so worried about the half-marathon because it has a 3 hour time limit. I'm hoping to finish on time and get a medal.

I did my 10k in November and it was incredibly difficult. The elevation was totally insane and it was so discouraging. I haven't really run since. I have my half-marathon training p... I normally run MWF, and do a 60 min weights or spin class MWTFS . I'm afraid of over-exerting myself with training Friday, then doing the event Saturday. It's not a competitive event, but I'd not like to be hurting my mile 2.

Any suggestions? Just keep my normal training schedule, or skip Friday? Mon, 5 Dec 2011 12:57:15 EST Wait, wait, don't pull up the course yet! more slow fat runner finishing up!

What a GREAT team! At last a place for me, a person without a runner's body who loves the ease and effectiveness and inexpense (is that a word? My husband will be joining the ranks of the slow fat runners come January. I'm pregnant and have had to take a break from running since June. My husband and I have both gained weight during my pregnancy and are eager to get back to the gym soon. I think I'll pretty much have to start over from the beginning and was thinking of doing C25K again to get re-started. My husband has asked to join me and I couldn't be happier about it. I only started running a few years ago and even though I stil... Sun, 13 Nov 2011 19:35:50 EST C25K to 42....? Started C25K in august and had to stop due to foot pain. Tue, 1 Nov 2011 10:51:56 EST Heat Rash? I did a long run yesterday wearing my arch band and after my run the left side of my left foot hurt very badly, it was hard to walk and it had point tenderness- I thought maybe I had a stress fracture, but as the night went on it became hard (or tough), red, and warm to the touch and that is when I remembered I had ran in my arch support and it had probably rubbed and caused friction. Has anyone had a "rash" like this? How did you take care of it? I have iced it, elevated it and soaked it in ... Wed, 26 Oct 2011 16:07:19 EST I was ROFL when I saw the name of this group ... THIS was the group I was looking for, lol! I've been running off and on the past year, took the summer off because I don't like running in the heat. Yeap, I'd rather run when it's -10C out than when it's +30C, thank you very much! Then just as I started back I tore my calf playing soccer. Just getting back at it, doing the couch to 5K yet again, lol! And when I do run I run slow. My pb from June was 40 minutes and I was damn proud of that!

Looking forward to meeting y'all. :... Sun, 23 Oct 2011 18:44:42 EST More sore after intervals I don't know why this happens to me, but the days I do intervals, I am always way more sore! Yesterday I wanted to do 4 or 5 miles, and my hubby was gonna come with me. He's not much on exercise or running, so we did some jogging a few times and then walked. After 2.5 miles he was ready to stop, so he went home, and I ran 2.5 more miles. I have run 4 and 5 miles at a time without stopping, just at a steady pace, and after the long runs where I run without stopping I am never as sore as wh... Hi again,

So I wanted to share that I walked a half-marathon last Sunday. I have jogged three half marathons before, but I still feel like it was a great accomplishment. I enjoyed the day and just being a part of the excitement. My goal is to eventually walk a full marathon - maybe Seattle next November?

Any way, Go me!! :) Sat, 15 Oct 2011 15:21:32 EST I HAD to join this team I mean, this is perfect!!!

I used to run regularly, about 8 years and 40 lbs ago. I still enjoy going to races, so I do them long and slow. :) I figure I am still doing more than anyone on the sidelines!

I can't wait to keep reading up and sharing experiences.

Thank you!
BA Sat, 15 Oct 2011 15:19:06 EST Hello again This is not my first time around. But I hope to make it my last.. I "forgot" I was an (old) slow fat runner and tried to compete with with the younger set. Injured my hip and knee and have been off for a year and a half. Also gained 10 lbs.. Sigh.. I missed all you and missed running. Tomorrow I am going to start again. My mantra? I am an (older) slow fat runner..

Also, one question. Anyone recommend a good inspirational audio book to listen to while I run? Wed, 28 Sep 2011 20:46:34 EST Running Mantras? I'm coming up on the first anniversary of my first 5K race--which I am celebrating by running again! I'm hoping to improve my time, although I'm pretty sure I can do that!

One thing that got me through was an article I had just read on having a mantra to say to yourself (silently or our loud) during the tough parts of the race. I just kept repeating to myself "You are doing it" (my take on Just do it).

Anyone else have mantras or other ideas for getting through the tou... Tue, 20 Sep 2011 11:23:11 EST Brooks Glycerin 8s I have been wearing Brooks Beasts for years as well as Brooks Adrenelines. I just got a coupon code for Glycerin 8s from (they are last year's colors/models for $65) - BEACTIVE11. The Beasts have been outstanding for me because they are for heavy runners. However at $65, I am going to try the Glycerins. Just thought I'd share the code with other Slow Fat Runners since current year/models are $130 (and also because I am a Slow Fat CHEAP Runner). You use the code on the Brooks w... Wed, 14 Sep 2011 10:35:02 EST 10K Tomorrow My first 5K was a month ago and tomorrow will be my first 10K, on a timed 90 minute course. I AM FREAKING OUT! Up until a week ago I knew I could do it, in fact I fought to prove I could when neigh-sayers after my 5K said I shouldn't due to hip soreness (which turned out to be crap shoes), but as the hours tick away I find myself terrified of finishing without a finish line. I know that what matters is finishing, but honestly it would destroy my head if I didn't make it in time. I run a 13 mi... Sun, 11 Sep 2011 00:58:21 EST Hello! Hello, there:

Slow and fat runner? That's me! But I surely LOVE running (well, it is too slow to be called "running" right now.....). You have been inspiring for me. Thanks! Hope to keep up! Thu, 8 Sep 2011 04:45:32 EST Now THIS is my TEAM!!! Hello, just introducing myself here.. I have been a slow fat runner for about 18 months now. completed several half marathons and my first full marathon last october, then got pregnant in november. I completely stopped running this january... My second daughter is 6 weeks old, today, and have been slowly getting back into running. Mon, 5 Sep 2011 17:27:35 EST Bad foot cramps Hi Everyone, I used to run a lot, up until about 4 years ago when I started to gain weight. Now I'm about 50 lbs overweight and am slowly getting back into running.

Couple things are different, one is that I can only "run" (well, slowly) about a minute before my heart rate goes into the the 85-90% so I have to walk a lot. But the other thing is that I'm experiencing bad foot cramps on the bottom of my feet. I got fitted for new Asics, so it's not the shoes, I never had plantar ... Tue, 30 Aug 2011 15:05:45 EST Runningslow Here! LOL Hi everyone! As you can see by my name I am a SLOW "runner." I am training for a 1/2 marathon in November and have completed a full marathon (took me six hours and i ran the whole way!). Looking forward to chatting with other tortoises! 134 Fri, 26 Aug 2011 11:00:33 EST Newbie I'm Nicole and I too am a slow, fat "runner"... I started a 1 Year Challenge to take off between 104 and 124 lbs on 06/08/11 and after a week or two found a 5K training program in Fitness magazine that I wanted to try. I had no intention of running a 5K, just wanted to see if I could do the program, after a week I realized I could and signed up for the Foster Kid 5K (completed last week in 42.01, not the last runner and ahead of all walkers). Before I ran my 5K a friend and I decided to take ... Wed, 17 Aug 2011 14:05:08 EST Another Race, Another PR! Had a great 5K on Saturday! Pushed hard and lowered this race time by 2 minutes and was able to score a medal for 2nd in my age division. My First!! It was a very hot and difficult 5k as this was up, down and around a huge golf course and rock quarry. Some of the sections were almost verticle going down and then back up again, so you really had to slow and pay attention that you didn't fall and roll to the bottom. Due to all that hill action, my calves were screaming at me yesterday, but a... I finished my second 5K yesterday, and I took 1:38 off of my first 5K time three weeks ago! My new time to beat is 44:54 (gun time) but my watch time was 44:50, and then take off the 0:06 that it took me to get to the start line. But it wasn't chip-timed, so I'm "required" to say my time was 44:54. :)

The Kids did the Kids' Dash (75 yards) and the Boyfriend did the 10K in 47:17, and then we all did the Fun Mile afterward. Usually when jogging, my thoughts go something like this " how much farther, my foot hurts, I can't breathe, when can I walk, my hips ache, I'm hot, how much farther... etc" Not very pleasant. Yesterday, I realized i was jogging along thinking about my upcoming day and actually enjoying myself. holy smokes. a miracle. What do you think about when you are running? Mon, 1 Aug 2011 10:49:47 EST It's funny to me... I am very fair and I get very flushed when I run. And it takes a long time to fade. I have started carrying a wet towel with me so that during cool down I can keep pressing it to my cheeks, neck, etc to try to get those cappilaries to constrict but even with that I am still red faced when I get home and for another 45 minutes at least. Does anyone else have this problem and any solutions?
-Liane Tue, 26 Jul 2011 09:41:41 EST lower back pain question I am happy to find this team as I try to improve my fitness through running-- well , more like jogging, or "wogging", which is jogging as fast as most people walk. But it is what it is and I continue to move forward. My question is this: When I am jogging for even a short length of time (5 minutes), my lower back hurts, enough so that I feel like stopping. I have to really push to get through it and it makes the experience of jogging much less enjoyable. I have tried new shoes but that did... Nike+ or 60beat or Digifit or Runkeeper or . . . well, so many out there to choose from.

My current favorite app is Runkeeper, but I also like Nike+ -- cost is always a factor for me, so that would come into play as well. I'm in the midst of my personal branding effort and got a call from my rep, there, who said that they all got such a kick out of our team name, Slow Fat Runners, that it inspired a whole lot of them to get off their butts.

I guess that means I'm not fired :) Sun, 19 Jun 2011 06:39:10 EST Question about Water Retention Sorry if you get this more than once. I'm posting it in 3 of my running groups hoping to find an answer.

The other day I was out running and it felt like my hands swelled up. I've felt this before. Not comfortable, but usually goes away once I'm done running and I tend to forget.

This time, the bloating I felt in my hands did go away, but I've had swelling/bloating in my feet. Shoes that are generally loose are feeling really tight.

I know it's water ret... Fri, 17 Jun 2011 10:56:23 EST Running Pants + Sweat = Painful Problem I decided to invest in a pair of running pants the last time I was in to buy new runners. I found a pair that fit great and felt great - I was excited. Not so much any more.

More than once when I've run in the pants, which still fit & feel great, I have experienced pain after. So, what's the problem? Well, it's a delicate subject that I only trust my SP peeps with - here it is. When I run I sweat a lot and as most of you I sweat between my legs (and all over) which then causes... Wed, 1 Jun 2011 12:25:42 EST My first 5K run Well, today marked my first official 5K. It took me 46:35 but I still took 3rd in my age class. I dreaded this day as everyone started warning me that it was the hardest 5K they had ever seen. It comprised a run through the woods for almost the first mile then several large hills. There was less than a half mile of flat land for running. I finished and that's what's most important to me. I never thought I would accomplish this but am now looking forward to the next one! Fri, 20 May 2011 16:34:35 EST Hello! Newbie here to SFR Hello. I've been faithfully doing SP since March 23, 2011 and have lost just over 17lbs. so far. I love to jog...which I haven't done in YEARS!!! So I am working my way up to it. I just joined a running club and am starting a beginner runner's class on May 31st. I have signed up to do my first 5k the first weekend in August. Plenty of time to prepare and train.

Looking forward to any tips/motivation this team can provide :)

Thanks!

Melanie Wed, 18 May 2011 12:59:37 EST Personal Record 5K Time Last year, Running With The Cows 5K was only my second race - ever - but so much fun. This year, I approached the race with renewed hope - I've been logging many more miles in training for the 1/2 Marathon in 3 weeks, so I had high hopes of hitting a personal record.

A friend of mine warmed up with me, my legs and feet felt great, it was very windy and chilly, but I still had hope. I'm a slow fat walker right one and before summer is out I'd like to be a slow fat runner (hopefully a little less fat:) ). This forum looks like the place for me to start! Wed, 20 Apr 2011 19:56:35 EST Needing some advice Hi all. Well, I registered for a 5k on May 28th about a month ago and started training. Since then my training has gotten sidelined by; first, weather (2 tornado warning days in a week) then surgery...again (3rd in 6 months). By the time I get clearance from my doctor to train again I will only have 7 weeks til the run. Do I run it or back out gracefully and wait for another? I am told it is a challenging 5k with lots of hills. I don't feel I have the support to be ok with walking most of it.... Wed, 6 Apr 2011 11:22:54 EST I am a SFR wannabe! :) Wow! I feel like I've found my Spark People home! :) I'm not technically a "runner" yet - but I am training for a full walking marathon in June.

Walking significant distances takes FOREVER, though, so I'd like to eventually get back to more jogging than walking. However, my weight makes that problematic, so I'll be taking it very slow. In fact, I'll probably wait until I get another 20 lbs or so off before I even attempt much in the way of jogging. My 47yo knees have let m... Then I put the brakes on and stopped running after I developed pain in my feet and then leg cramps that let me in a fetal position and tears most nights. (The Mr had to help me stand most evenings) Doc was unable to figure out any known reason; I did a warm-up and cool-down, I was well hydrated and stretched - although that could have been better.

I've missed running or maybe the idea of running ... not sure which one is... Mon, 28 Mar 2011 19:26:37 EST I am new I am new to this team but not to running. I have been running for about a year now. Mon, 28 Mar 2011 08:52:04 EST Track or Treadmill??? I have recently starting running again. I have been using the Couch to 5K program. I have been running on the indoor track at my gym and have been doing well. In the next couple of weeks, I will be joining a new that does not have an indoor track. This would mean I would have to start utilizing the treadmill in order to continue my training.

I just got me you prefer training on a treadmill or on a track? I've had several setbacks this year after a great start with the 1/1/11 Resolution Run Virtual 5K and a great run in a 1/29 5K race (not such a great TIME for that event, but man! did I feel great crossing that finish line!) I've been plagued by hip pain on my left side since that last event and I'm on my third restart of Bridge to 10K. Last month, I was sidelined by bronchitis and couldn't even walk for a couple of weeks. But I keep trying and I'm learning to moderate rather than stop com... Wed, 23 Mar 2011 13:55:54 EST Ran my first Marathon!! This past weekend I ran my very first marathon! I can not even begin to explain the sense of accomplishment and the emotions that I felt when I crossed the finish line! I finished in 5:08! I was not really concerned with finishing at any particular time, but instead finishing period!!! Mon, 14 Mar 2011 14:13:49 EST 3 weeks till my first 5K I cant believe how quickly time flies. It's already 3 weeks till my very first 5K. I'm looking forward to it, but as the date approaches and as my trainings go that excitement changes more and more into nervousness. I am no where near being able to run a full mile, let alone a 5K. I really need to get my butt in gear and just train train train these next 3 weeks. But then if I think that I think 'well what if I hurt myself in the trainings then I wont even be able to do the 5K at all' Oh boy!... Mon, 14 Mar 2011 11:50:04 EST Ever have a hand go numb? I did a 5K this morning, and about at the 2-mile mark, I noticed my left hand was feeling a little tingly and numb. Sat, 19 Feb 2011 22:43:06 EST Is a 15 mile run/jog speed too bad for starters? I have never seriously run before but started a few weeks ago searching for a high calorie workout. I have always been able to walk very long distance at a good pace but never really thought I could run as every time I tried I would run out of breath within a few minutes. Taking a friend's advice, I started running very slow (15 min /mile) and was amazed of my endurance. In less than 4 weeks into it, I can now run 3-4 miles 3 times a week and do a longer run of 5 miles on the weekend (hoping ... Sat, 19 Feb 2011 15:34:26 EST Please Don't Laugh Here is my dilemma...when I mentioned it to my husband I thought he was going to go into convulsions he was laughing so hard and it really hurt my feelings but I know this cannot be that uncommon for "bigger" runners.

Since I have lost 63 pounds my stomach has gotten flabby and when I run it tends to jiggle and bounce around and at times it gets painful...and I was wondering how to deal with this...I have tried support underwear that has the panel that goes just under the bra line ... Wed, 16 Feb 2011 08:26:48 EST Tracking Calorie Burn I'm new to running/jogging. I've done intervals (5 minute run/jog followed by 5 minutes of walking) on the treadmill to condition myself until I can run longer distances/times. I haven't set any time/distance goals during my workout (i.e. I MUST RUN A 10 MINUTE MILE) so I'm not really sure how to calculate my caloric burn. Yes the treadmill has a calorie counter but no option to enter my weight to calculate calories burned during my run/walk.

How do I track my calories (especial... I've done walking and jogging on the treadmill (was trying C25K) but I stopped because I felt like I was going to eventually fall off. I don't mean the newbie problem of getting used to the movement, etc. That was fine. I mean that nearly (there were very few exceptions) every time I jogged, and at least half the time when I walked, I seemed to find a slippery spot and I would... Mon, 24 Jan 2011 18:44:35 EST Underwear Ok, I'm just going to ask.. What kind of underwear do u wear under your workout clothes.? Regular underwear makes panty lines. No thongs.. I need something to hold my backside stable.. I really don't won't to spend 20$ or more for compression underwear unless I know it's worth it.. I have compression shorts, champion, but they are too thick to wear under my pants. Plus the waist band is too high and pinches.. Any thoughts? Thu, 20 Jan 2011 15:10:23 EST Happy Feet! After multiple issues with tendonitis, arch pain, and a mysterious, migrating ankle pain, I got my first pair of custom orthotics. I picked them up yesterday and went straight to the Running store for a new pair of sneaks to put them in. I went for my first jog in them this morning and I was pleasantly surprised at how comfortable they were. I know that sometimes it can take a while to get adjusted, but other than a light discomfort in the arch, they were good. Let's hope this gives me th... Thu, 20 Jan 2011 05:56:50 EST Speed or Distance? What's better As a SFR, I have been able to slow jog 2 miles without stopping and completed a 5K with only walking a total of 3 minutes. Every time I go further I am proud, but the critic in me questions my pace. It's all I can do to keep with a 14 minute mile in a 5k--nothing to brag about but I am proud of the distance I've covered. My question is... is running further distances better than running shorter distances faster? Thu, 13 Jan 2011 17:19:15 EST Walk and Jog? I was just wondering. I have heard from several different people that If i was to walk for so long and then jog for so long it would help me burn more calories. Is that true? I have a hard time jogging for a long time anyways since I am so out of shape, that is the way I have to do it until I can get into better shape. Tue, 11 Jan 2011 17:58:31 EST New to the Team--MCM2011 Hi everyone. I am so glad to find this team. I am training for the 2011 Marine Corps Marathon (October 30th) and could really use some support and encouragement. My goal is to complete the MCM in 5:30.

I had some injuries over the summer and into the fall that prevented me from training with any consistency, but I am healthy now and ready to get started. I'd love to become a runner, but I don't think I'm fit enough to begin a running program. I'm also a little intimidated by the idea of becoming a runner/jogger. Mon, 3 Jan 2011 16:29:04 EST Will I always be so slow? I've been running since August. I finished C25K and I am working towards a half marathon in May. I started at a 15 min mile pace and I'm still there. I do speed drills, but I can't keep up the 12 minute pace for more than 2-3 minutes. I always fall back to a 15 minute mile pace, whether it's 3 miles for 5 miles.

I would love to be able to run 10-12 minutes per mile. Hi All,

My "darling" husband bought me a registration to this year's Rock & Roll Marathon in San Diego (June 5, 2011) for Christmas. So here I am, with 80 pounds to lose, and a whole lot of miles to run/walk to get ready for the event.

All help and encouragement to get me to June without an injury is most appreciated! I'm logging my miles on a treadmill right now because the roads are beating my feet up too much, and am rationalizing that it is better to log soft miles... Sat, 1 Jan 2011 16:44:00 EST C25K Newbie ready to give it my best! I'll be honest and say that once 2 summers ago I made an honest effort at the C25K but got discouraged from the aches and pains. I tried running again this past spring on a treadmill (at my old job) and I was so happy that my knees, ankles, and feet weren't left in pain. SO I've decided instead of just dreaming about being able to run, I'm actually gonna word at making that dream a reality. And in the process I'm gonna overcome my fear of running on a treadmill at the gym.

Oh and ... Hello fellow runners!

Question for you - how far in advance do you sign up for races? Right now, I'm still at the 5k stage, and I'm torn. On the one hand, I'm thinking signing up for a future 5k or two will help keep me motivated to keep running throughout the winter (it worked with the 5k I ran this weekend!) On the other hand, I do worry that if I sign up too far in advance and get injured, I will be really bummed (or worse yet, try to run it injured).

I feel like i... Sat, 4 Dec 2010 21:07:29 EST Tomorrow Is my first 5K event where I am capable of running the whole distance.

I am nervous, as I have a nagging chest cold, but I REALLY want to finish the whole race.

Yesterday, I did a very short run- just a mile, and posted a PR- not impressive (11 min to go 1.1 mile) unless you are me :)

Wed, 24 Nov 2010 06:31:50 EST Tingling hands? I decided to start running about 3 weeks ago. I still can't quite make 1/2 mile at a time yet, but I push myself a little further every day. Lately though, when I start reaching my limit my hands start tingling. Like they're falling asleep or something. I make sure they're not fisted tightly, that I'm not carrying them too high and I try shaking them out, but it hasn't stopped the tingling. Within a few seconds of returning to a walk they're fine, but the whole thing worries me a little bit. ... Sat, 13 Nov 2010 13:09:14 EST another newbie Hi, I've been looking for a place like this. I'm a slow, fat runner, and I've been running for a while (several years), but I've gotten more serious recently. I've only really considered myself a runner since the beginning of the month, when I finished my first half (yay!). It was very slowly, but I finished. My problem is, despite all my running -- about 20 miles a week -- and following a pretty sensible diet -- was on Jenny Craig, now on maintenance -- I've really plateaued on my weight. If... Tue, 9 Nov 2010 17:16:12 EST Somewhat new to running Hi, I've just started running in this last year since I joined Sparkpeople. I don't run real fast and I don't run continuously - yet! Can't believe I am running at all really. Never thought it would be something I would enjoy. But what do you know, I think I'm addicted. I'm looking forward to learning more about running and how to do better. Sun, 7 Nov 2010 21:37:28 EST Any idea how to combat this? As I was running last night, I got a pretty severe cramp in the left side of my low back. It didn't keep me from finishing my run, but MAN did it zap my stamina. Do you think this can be corrected by changing my form, breathing differently, etc? Your advice is really appreciated.

I just mapped my route and I am pretty sure we ran like 2.8 miles. I have a 5K in just under 3 weeks, so I am starting to feel more prepared. Even with that pain, I could push for another half mile to... Sat, 6 Nov 2010 08:59:38 EST New to the team :) Hey! I'm Charly and i am a slow, fat runner. :) I have about 60 pounds to lose and just started spark people as an alternative to the $40/month fee that weight watchers online charges. So far, I'm really liking the nutrition side of the site. I also joined a few of the tri teams as I am going to attempt a sprint tri this weekend for the first time!

I started running about 6 years ago after my second child was born to help me lose weight. I lost about 50 pounds and was running 5K's... Riding a bike doesn't bother anything at all, though. For example, I just completed a 5K on Saturday (walking the entire thing with my siste... Sat, 30 Oct 2010 19:06:05 EST Stress Fracture? Anyone ever have a stress fracture in your foot and what did it feel like? I feel back in June three days before my half marathon and twisted my ankle. It was horribly swollen. I had it x-rayed and it showed swelling but no broken bones. I wrapped it and ran the half.

It has continued to bother me ever since. At my last 11 mile training run it starting hurting a little at about mile 9. I completed the run but it was hurting so bad and was swollen so I layed off for a few days... Fri, 29 Oct 2010 12:38:33 EST New fat runner from Oregon Hello I am new to this team. I started run/walking about a year ago and actuly did a 5k. I still can't run the full time but I'm getting better. If you asked me 3 years ago if I was a runner I would have replied Are you Crazy... That is an insane thing to do. But here I am running and enjoying it actully addicted to it now. Thu, 28 Oct 2010 14:39:23 EST 5K training - any suggestions? In June of 2010 I participated in my first 5K. I walked/jogged and completed it in 49 minutes. I was happy with that time due to never participating in a race before. To be honest, I had only walked a 5K a hand full of times prior to race day. However, lack of training or rather, no real training my body was angry for days after. A massage and stretching did little to ease the pain.

I decided to take on the C25K program after. Yeah, I know I got that one backwards - LOL! I hav... I walk 4.0-4.1 mph on the treadmill however when I go to run at that rate my HR goes thru the roof. Sat, 23 Oct 2010 23:27:20 EST Working hard to become a runner Hi Everyone!

I'm Emily, a 36 year old mom in Wisconsin.

I'm certainly no natural athlete, but man am I ever trying. I had my son about 2.75 years ago and really became sedentary for quite a while.

Oh, I had bursts of working out, but didn't work out very consistently until this year. Tue, 19 Oct 2010 14:11:37 EST Winter running I'm hoping to continue running into winter as long as the weather cooperates. This may sound like a silly question, but here goes. My head doesn't really get cold, but my ears do. I'm concerned that if I wear a hat when the temps are in the thirties or colder I'll be too hot. But if I just wear ear muffs will my hair freeze and maybe have some breakage? I honestly don't know. I just know that even this past Sunday when it was in the forties when I ran my hair was still soaked with sweat. Hmm,... Mon, 11 Oct 2010 19:54:21 EST What a difference a year can make... this is for everyone who ever doubted that they could run at all much less a 5K. Thu, 30 Sep 2010 22:42:54 EST To Run or Not to Run ... this is the Question I am reaching to all of you for advice, encouragement, sane thinking ... SOMETHING. I have visited the KC Marathon page several times a week since April and have fantasized about the possibility that I might one day be able to participate in such a prestigious event, and how monumental that would be for me ... and here I find myself now .. seriously considering registering for the 1/2 Marathon. I absolutely know I would not be satisfied with just doing the 5K that day (adrenaline, etc.) ...... Wed, 29 Sep 2010 16:19:51 EST Sorry for not intoducing myself.. i have been lurking for a while but i want to state that I am proud to be a SFR! I have lost 96 lbs so far but have another 60+ to go. However, I have also run 5K's, 10K's and a Half Marathon long training run, my official Half is next month. I love running, how it makes me feel, what it does for me and my confidence. I am not fast but I am determined. so far my best time is a 13'33" pace on the 13.1. Mon, 27 Sep 2010 21:05:47 EST Team in Florida Hey all! I am just starting on the path to health living. I have a long way to go but am trying to get a goal to be in a Marathon this March 2011 here in Brevard County Florida. Wed, 22 Sep 2010 08:13:51 EST Hello Hi, I'm new to Sparkpeople and enjoying learning what it has to offer. I have to say when I saw this team, I got really excited because I'm a runner and would love to meet others that are working on the same goal as I am. Last year I accomplished my 1st 1/2 marathon, am registered for a full this Nov. but frustrated because my training has came to a halt because of an injury and Dr. says it will break if I continue so right now it's cross training and this is really boring. Fri, 17 Sep 2010 11:57:43 EST A Slow Fat Runners Dilema for Race Day Hello Fellow SFRs!!!! I am seeking some advice from those of you who have completed a 5K. My first real 5K (i.e. one that I intend to jog the whole way) is coming up Oct 2. I am concerned about where to place myself in the pack. I run at a very slow pace. If I can hold that pace, I know I will be able to slowly but surely finish the whole way without stopping to walk, which is my goal. However, in my last 5K which I walked part of, I found myself behind and mixed within the walkers. I had to ... Wed, 15 Sep 2010 21:25:00 EST Fresh start from a failed start in May Iam an old member that joined in May 2010 and lost modivation to lead a healthy life by the first week. I apparently wasn't ready to do something good for myself. I read back over a few journal entries I had mad when I decided to take control of my weight today and I suddenly felt so disappointed in myself that I had quit before. SO, with that said I decided that being accountable somewhere-and that somewhere is here- a priority for me and for my health. I used to run! I love the feeling... Tue, 14 Sep 2010 11:58:34 EST how can i track my fitness? I'm doing the c25k thing with my iphone, but I'm not sure how to track how much I did. Sun, 12 Sep 2010 20:49:18 EST I can't seem to get started--help? I know the obvious answer is to just go out and's not so easy for me. I read all the time about running, learn what I can from all the books, enjoy reading Runners World each month, love planning my runs and thinking about how fleet I'll be flying down the treadmill..but when it comes to actually doing it I don't have the time, or I'm too tired, or I'm hurt, or sick...etc. I wake up early to get ready for work and get the kids out of the house on time....I come home from wor... I'm fitter than before, but still feel 'gym fit', since I still get out of breath when I have to hike a hill etc. I'm also still considerably overweight, but active. I also have to be careful of my lower back, because I have had a couple surgeries there. So, here's my question:

Is it possible for a 50+, overweight, improving-shape person to run?
