SparkPeople Hip Replacement Before and After Team Messageboard This team is for people facing hip replacement or for those that already have had replacement. It will offer suggestions on preparing for surgery and for after surgery. SparkPeople Hip Replacement Before and After Team Messageboard My name is Maren. I am 74 years old. I had my left hip replaced 6 years ago. Now the shell lining of the replacement has worn out and the ball keeps slipping out of the socket and I end up in the Emergency Room. To keep that from happening I wear a brace to immobilize my left leg. I have an appointment with the orthopedic surgeon (who put in my hip replacement) on
4-19-16 to discuss surgery. For now, my life is on hold. Has anyone here had a hip replacement wear out? Can you tell me what to expect? Tha... Sat, 2 Apr 2016 20:24:28 EST Anyone else had arthroscopy and then a THR? I am a 49 year old mother of 4 and a lifelong athlete. I had hip pain for years and went from doctor to doctor. I went through years of cortisone, physical therapy and just living with it. I finally found a doctor who knew immediately what it was, pistol hip dysplagia ( a CAM deformity), a genetic disorder that developed in my teens. This lead to a Femoro-acetabular impingement. As a result of it not being diagnosed for so long I had labral tears in and torn/shredded cartilage both hips caus... Sun, 20 Mar 2016 20:39:50 EST Any with pins in hip already? My surgery is scheduled for late July. I have had 5 pins in each hip for 43 years. Currently I am working out on a nu-step recumbent bike. Trying to strengthen and lose a little weight and keep BP in a normal range. Any other exercise that could help? Trying not to use ibuprofen or aleave often, but the sudden drops in Temps going into spring leaves my hips aching terribly bad and whether I'll even make it to July. Tips on food, supplements, and exercise would be greatl... Sun, 20 Mar 2016 18:58:35 EST I'm new to this team I'm 56, and have had 5 pins in both hips for 43 years. This July I will have my right hip replaced and the left to follow in September if all goes well. I am very excited and not intimidated in any way. I look forward to roller skating next spring. I currently weigh 320 with a BMI at 44%, which my Doc said he would have no problem doing surgery now at this weight. I however have to get my BP down and desire to be at 275lbs by the end of July. Fri, 5 Feb 2016 23:24:16 EST My Name is Jan Hi. My name is Jan and I am new here.

In 2002, during a karate class, I did a high side kick, hit the mark and then hit the floor. My life changed forever. I had somehow damaged the inner side of my hip joint. I had cut off the blood supply to the bone, resulting in Avascular Necrosis. Because of the location of the injury nobody could see the injured area with the xrays and even the MRI that was done. It took 9.5 years to find a Dr. who finally found it. By then the area had dete... Sun, 19 Oct 2014 23:07:27 EST Hi I'm just looking for some help and support Hi, my aunty is looking at a double hip replacement, and I will be honest, I'm scared she's just turned 68 earlier this year, she's not getting any younger and I know surgery carried more risk the older you get, I lose my nan, my aunty's sister 10years ago this month and I don't want to lose her as well.
I'm just looking for some support, and some information about hip replacement surgery, any information will be gratefully received.
Thank you for reading my message. Sun, 28 Sep 2014 10:22:09 EST What are your limits? I'm curios, what are you not allowed to do anymore? The reason I ask, is because I have found everyone does not seem to have the same precautions that I have. Fri, 5 Sep 2014 12:35:30 EST Flexiblility after THR After your THR, did your flexibility change? I'm 6 months in and I still have problems tying my shoe. I switched to lock laces. I had no problems before, but now I have to strain too much, and I don't want to put too much pressure on my joint. I'm going to ask my ortho about it during my next check up, but I was curious what others were going through. Thu, 31 Jul 2014 23:29:34 EST Life is a bit different now Hi, I'm Joy. I had a hip replacement at the age of 39. I had my surgery this past December, and I'm trying to adjust to my new lifestyle. I catch myself doing things I can't do anymore, like starting to squat down for something, and realizing I can't do that. It's nice to meet you all. Tue, 29 Jul 2014 21:54:37 EST Date of most recent surgery? Looks like this is the first posting for 2014...

Just curious, what's the date of your last surgery? Also, was it a total hip replacement, a revision & which hip or both, or did it involve an area around the hip?

My last surgery was May, 2011 & it was reconstruction of my left pelvic. My last THR revision of left hip on January, 2000. Sun, 23 Feb 2014 08:35:27 EST Hi! New to this group Hi everyone! I am new to this group, but not sure how current it is. Most posts seem a bit on the older side, but thought I'd give it a try. I had my anterior THR 4 weeks ago ~ almost 5 actually. I had my left hip done due to advanced arthritis. I am 52 and had been in severe pain for over 2 years. I knew it was time for some relief. I was home 24 hours after surgery and walking with a walker. Slowly, but still walking! Went to the cane after a week, and have actually been cane free f... Sun, 29 Dec 2013 09:44:11 EST muscle issues after thr? I've had five surgeries on my left hip. One reconstructive surgery on the left hip joint & femur, four left thr & one left pelvic reconstruction. The doctor says my hip & pelvic are doing great; the pain must be in the muscle. He didn't offer any solutions & I didn't ask. Anyone else with multiple surgeries on the same hip having muscle issues? Thanks! Wed, 18 Sep 2013 10:49:30 EST Here to say hello .. long overdue! Hi everyone.. I have not posted here for ages.. sorry about that ...I really am! .. However, in fact, not been on SP for an age either! My world has become full of health investigations following me mentioning to my rheumatologist that my right hip (left one replaced 17 years ago) was really getting very painful.. and that I was not managing the pain that well on my Celebrex anymore. .. it felt as though something was adrift I said.. well he decided to run some more tests due to my very high... Sun, 8 Sep 2013 06:45:19 EST The other Hip .. anyone have their other hip done? If so, how long between surgeries? Fri, 7 Dec 2012 23:44:43 EST Anterior Lateral I had a R THR 10 Oct, and was wondering about range of motion after recovery. My incision is Anterior Lateral. Mon, 26 Nov 2012 17:16:10 EST Need new leader and co leader Hi all,
Is there anyone willing to take over this team. Since my husbands death, I just don't have time or the incentive to keep this going. I am babysitting, buying a house and moving soon. It has gotten too much along with learning to live alone. Sophia is also giving up her co-leader. She will continue to check in though. I hope someone can do this.
Bev Sun, 26 Aug 2012 20:57:42 EST 6 Months Progress Update

If you have a physical therapist, listen to them, and do the exercises. I should still be doing mine everyday, but sometimes I forget; however, I am so much stronger. Be patient with your body. It will get stronger as you do more. I cannot believe how much muscle I had lost: they keep reminding me. I had gotten so sedentary, because of pain. At first, it seemed like I hurt every time I added another activity (not in my hip or leg, necessarily), but in my calves, my knees, ... Sat, 9 Jun 2012 13:23:44 EST Hip replacement surgery on Thursday Hi folks,
I will have my lft hip joint replaced on Thursday morning. I go through periods of being really nervous about it and at peace about it. I am really confident in my surgeon, which helps. I am 53, so I am not too young for this. I am husband and teenage son will be here to help me out and I think I will turn out better than ever. I have been reading everyone's posts with great interest. Thank you. Mon, 2 Apr 2012 23:35:17 EST Hello from Central Wisconsin Hi Everyone.

I just joined this morning & thought I should introduce myself.

I am going to be 52 in December & I live in Central Wisconsin. I love to go fishing & geocaching but I havent been able to do alot of those since I found out I need a total hip replacement on the right side. I used to drive bus for special needs school children until I was let go because of my mobility issue. I use a cane to walk with & they need the driver to be able to get up fast & to get to... Sun, 1 Apr 2012 18:51:15 EST When to stop medication for muscle pain? This may sound like a stupid question, but I am feeling a bit of a dilemma about when to stop my pain meds from after surgery. I do not crave them, because I have been careful to cut them in half and the doctor has lowered the dosage. Also, I try to hold off on taking them. I am taking the generic for Vicodan 7.5-750 TAB. I do not take more than 1 to 1-1/2 a day.

I have tried iboprofen, but that does not help with the pain, and my stomach acid gets really bad. How much pain is... Mon, 5 Mar 2012 16:36:11 EST Will be unavailable for a while Hi Everyone,

I will not be available for a while. My husband passed away on March 2 and I need time for myself and all that needs doing. It was sudden and not ready for it to go so fast. Take care everyone and if someone would like to help out as a co-leader, I would appreciate it. Sun, 4 Mar 2012 08:07:52 EST What can't you do? I accidentally learned today that after my hip replacement, I can no longer have MRI's. I am wondering what else can't be done after my hip is replaced? While I zero interest in things like bungee jumping or parachuting, I am wondering what things will be prohibited. Thanks for any info. Mon, 20 Feb 2012 22:07:01 EST Missing in action Hi everyone, I am sorry, I have not been on here much lately. I am babysitting my great grandaughters which includes a 4 month old baby and also teaching a computer class at our Sr Center. If anyone else would like to help here I would appreciate it.

My husbands COPD has also gotten worse, so everything is left for me to do. I like to keep in touch occasionally, but just can't get on here much. Haven't been eating very well either.

Just wanted to update all. Sat, 4 Feb 2012 14:26:08 EST IMPORTANT READ!!!! SparkPeople and Facebook Just in case you have not yet seen this SP has implemented a new feature without informing us: there is now a share bar at the top & bottom of your blog posts that easily allow others to share your blogs on Facebook and Twitter. There is a marked difference in the movement I have now, as compared to that first week. Every day I see improvement.. Today, I didn't even have to take pain medication when I first woke up. I am looking forward to graduating from my walker, but I am not ready yet. The walker keeps me from putting too much weight on that hip. Yesterday, I walked to church--I live next door: I did my trial run Saturday... The second hip was done 6 1/2 years ago. The first one (and almost from the time it was done) every so often kind of "pops" - I think it might be actually a muscle or something. It happens when I get up from a low chair - and I don't know when it will happen. I have actually thrown grandbabies over to the couch so I won't drop them when this happens. Last night it happened unexpectantly while I was decorating my Mom's house... Mon, 5 Dec 2011 20:34:24 EST Medication and when to have surgery I have more than one question. My doctor said to wait as long as I could to have surgery, because the artificial joint lasts about 15 years. The x-rays show no space between the ball and hip; and I have bone spurs. I will be 60 next April; and I feel like my life is wasting away, because I have so much trouble walking. I cannot even go to the store now without having to ride on one of those electric carts. And I cannot get the exercise I need. Would you go ahead and have the surgery? N... Mon, 5 Dec 2011 12:32:59 EST WEIGHT GAIN AND ANTI-INFLA MMATORIES- (CELEBREX) Good morning everyone!! Mon, 7 Nov 2011 16:30:25 EST Have you had hip fluid removal? My new orthopedist has scheduled me for a hip fluid aspiration and cortisone shot to see if it relieves the pain. Have you had this done? Hi Sparkies!
I am new to the group. not wanting to admit that i have to have "that" done yet. i have been in pain off an on for a couple of years and just this past April was told that i have bone spurs and the next thing for me to do is to get a HR.
well now, you KNOW that is NOT on my to-do list at all, E.V.E.R. i am too busy running 5k's, 10k’s, etc. and riding in half centuries, for that stuff.
I just turned 51derful in September. I worked on getting off some weight before surgery and was successful, but now that I'm feeling better, I find myself slipping back into bad eating habits. I'm excited to be walking and relatively pain free (still just a bit sore). I want to keep the momentum going. Tue, 18 Oct 2011 19:33:08 EST It's on! :) Hello beautiful people!! How's everyone doing??? Well, today I went in for my 6 week post-op check up on my left hip. My right hip is about 3+ months old now itself. I finally got released from the dreaded walker LOL. I'm now on a cane for the next 4-6 weeks. I don't have to go to physical therapy, just have to keep up doing side swings with a progression of ankle weights up to 10 pounds. This will be to strengthen the stablizers on the outside of the hips and is what will eventually ... Wed, 21 Sep 2011 09:50:08 EST Hi, I'm Aimee :) 'm a stay at home mom to two young children (4 and 2) and I am fast approaching my 30s :) I gained a lot of weight with my pregnancies and so last year I decided that enough was enough and I lost 60+ lbs. I've pretty much stayed the same weight (the weight I've been most of my adult life) for about a year. However, I think I'm ready to challenge myself a bit more and see if I can push for some more weight loss. I am still about 20 lbs overweight according to my BMI. I also have advanced osteo... Sun, 18 Sep 2011 16:47:41 EST Anterior hip replacement Has anyone here had anterior hip replacement, where they go in the front of your leg, rather thatn the side or back? For a long time, I thought my pain was referred from my lower back; then, I got a second opinion, because it was getting worse. Yep! You know what I found out--no cartilage, between that hip and ball joint and bone spurs. I have a lot to learn about hip and ball joint arthritis and getting it fixed. I think I am actually getting to the point that I will consider the surgery. I am only 59, and I am getting crippled from this. I cannot do anything for very long on my feet without pro... I walked outside down the driveway.
I have decided to use my walker until I can walk without any aid. They recommend that you switch to a cane after 2 weeks. I guess the shoes I have been wearing are affecting the way I carry myself and walk...which affects the hips and the way they move. WHO would have thought that this can creat hip pain in replacement hips?? I will let you know how it goes. Has anyone else been diagnosed or heard of this?? Mon, 24 Jan 2011 12:24:52 EST three dislocations and a revision hi,
I haven't posted for a while. I had my initial replacement in May of 2010...and afterward had three total dislocations (and YEAH, they HURT)... And have had lots of Partial dislocations where the hip slides out and then pops back in.
The surgeon has decided that the joint has probably got a groove worn in it from the dislocation and now will never stay in I'm having a revision surgery on Monday Feb. 1st. Sat, 22 Jan 2011 01:59:41 EST Bursitis Just wondering if anyone that's already had hip replacement has an issue with bursitis in the hip area? Bursitis seems to be genetic in my family (although I've heard doctors say it isn't a genetic condition) so I'm not sure if it's something that follows hip replacement in time or just my aching family tree. Mon, 10 Jan 2011 18:21:32 EST Surgery set Hey everyone, I saw my OS again yesterday and my right THR surgical date is set for the 24th! He couldn't believe how bad my hip had become in just a few months. I'm so ready for this surgery, and feel very prepared thanks to all of your advice. Thu, 6 Jan 2011 11:25:37 EST Hi everyone - I'm knew to this Team Good morning! My name is Pat and I've been with Spark People since 2/2010. I had left hip replacement in April 2004 at the age of 44. I was born with hip dysplasia and had to wear a body cast the first 9 months of my life. I can remember, as a small child, the family doctor telling my Mom that even though they had corrected the hip dysplasia I would be experiencing a problem with the hip in my 40s. He was 'dead on'.

I was divorced less than a year when I had the surgery and ... Wed, 5 Jan 2011 06:29:44 EST Happy 2011 - newbie says hello to all! Hi everyone! I'm Gillian from Ontario, Canada. I'm new to SP, and am very excited to join - it looks great! I have had both my hips replaced - right in 2007 and left in 2009, due to osteoarthritis. In my 30s I used to do lots of aerobics (low to medium impact) but now I stick to my treadmill, recumbant bike and elliptical trainer. Would like to add pilates and low impact, but I don't want to do anything that would compromise my hips...sigh..maybe I'm just too paranoid! Anyway, this year's goa... Tue, 28 Dec 2010 11:11:44 EST when & how can I exercise? greetings,
I don't have a page with photos or anything. This is my 1st foray in to the social network on Spark. I've been doing spark since July. I began a weight loss program in late January 2010. As of now, I've lost 60 # and have a short-term (April 2011) goal of another 25 but I'm not sure if I can meet that given my current exercise status. I've had issues w/ my left knee ever since I was a teen. Other than that, my joints have always been pretty good... so... Thu, 16 Dec 2010 16:45:13 EST When did you? I have passed my 6 week check up with flying colours- can now sit in a regular chair and go up and down stairs in a normal manner BUT I am still wary of bending over and putting on my socks and shoes and giving myself a pedicure. When should I feel free to do these activities? I am desperate to ditch the sock thingee and the white elastic shoe laces:). Tue, 30 Nov 2010 14:24:36 EST Airport Security and Hip Replacements... I have a friend here on Spark...I don't know if she's on this team or not/..she may be. Her "name" is Need2BFatFree. Her REAL name is Louise. Her mom just found out she has a week ago...and now is on life support and it looks very bad. Louise lived with her mom, just the two of them, so this is horribly hard on her. Tue, 5 Oct 2010 20:54:45 EST Post Hip Replacement Question I am now 1.5 months post hip replacement and I have some questions if anyone can help me? I do not see my doctor until Nov. 4, 2010 and wasn't really told what I can do and NOT do. My hip feels pain there, but I still have some pain in the muscles at the top of my leg. After setting for a while, it hurts when I go to get up and I'm still using my cane when walking. I'm still doing the exercises my therapist gave me, but I still cannot lay and lift my leg any higher than 2-3 inches... Wed, 1 Sep 2010 13:26:51 EST the latest news hi all,
Sorry it's been so long since I've posted here.
Well, I did it again. I dislocated my new hip AGAIN. I did that about a week and a half ago and now am encased in a massive brace that goes around my waist and down my thigh (see my pix in my Spark Page, there's one there of it.) Tue, 24 Aug 2010 05:17:44 EST Squeaky hip prosthesis I work with a 56 year old man who had R hip replaced a year ago. I told him to join this team, but you know how men are.
His problem is a squeaky hip joint. Seriously, it is audible from about 10 feet away! He says it also hurts when it squeaks. His doctor has never had this happen before. My THR was April 2008, and I have no problems, so I can't help him.
Any suggestions, or anyone else have this problem?
Thanks! Mon, 23 Aug 2010 12:29:09 EST Another newbie Hi all,

New to SparkPeople (although I've been lurking for a while) and new member of the Hip Replacement Before and After team.

It's been a long road with my hips. (pun intended)

What I want to know is; I'm now 2.5 months post LTHR and had been exercising as much as I could comfortably push myself. However, as I'd mentioned, I ended up dislocating the new hip.

Because my surgery just happens to coincide with a new resolve to lose weight and get in shape...I am eager to do this as quickly as I can and despite the surgery. But I do NOT want to have... I had THR (a pressed in joint replacement as opposed to a glued in one) at the end of April and have been doing fairly well, but still have lots of questions.
One of which is when will my gait return to normal? I am walking without a cane, but I find I can't walk very far yet without the muscles on the hip replacement side of my leg getting fatigued. If I walk from t... Wed, 4 Aug 2010 00:21:31 EST How long was it until you felt normal? I had total hip replacements on September 30th (R) and February 1st (L). It been almost 6 months since the second one, and it still feels awkward, sore sometimes, and I still lose my balance. When does it start to feel normal? By normal, I mean feeling like it did before joint the pain started, being able to walk normally without feeling odd or having to concentrate on the skill of walking. If you've had the surgery, how long did it take for you? Mon, 26 Jul 2010 20:20:00 EST Welcome Richard Hi Everyone,
Please Richard to our group. Most people can recycle more than they do. Paper, magazines, cardboard, cereal boxes, glass, aluminum foil, cans and even grocery bags should go in your bin, not the trash.

Day 2 - Use cloth napkins. All disposable items hurt the environment, and that includes paper products like napkins. I can not put weight or balance on my new hip. The other day I leaned on the counter and put my left left up to stretch it that's the one that was replaced and it feels like its loose like it comes out of socket. Is that suppose to feel that way? My doctor is not really answering my questions he says just walk, ride a bike and do like ballet like leg lifts. Has anyone had that experience. I am still finding that I cannot move certain ways without causing new pain to my replaced joint. When I asked my surgeon about what kind of exercises I can do..he said to "avoid horsebackriding, motorcyling, snowmobiling, trampolines, and running. He said anything else that doesn't cause pain is okay". Well, slipping and sliding on the ice the other day did produce some pain, so now I am no longer walking outdoors until the sun melt... Just a few days ago I added Walking away the Pounds to my daily routine. I'm really careful about lifting my right leg, but manage to complete the workout still in tack. Wed, 15 Jul 2009 14:47:14 EST Met a new orthopedic surgeon today Today I met the ortho surgeon that is going to do a knee replacement on my mom. It's a term of endearment that since breaking my hip at the age of 11 I've been accepting more and more.) I'm at about a little over a month in post-op since my surgery and I'm asking some of you younger hip replacement peeps, how long did you wear the anti-embolism stockings. My doctor said I could remove them, but to watch for swelling. He also said that some people prefer to wear theirs the full three months recommended. So, how long did some you... Tue, 9 Dec 2008 12:00:40 EST Hip Healing Hi There:

Just an update. I have been remiss in accessing SP. My husband was home for one week from the hospital but due to the fact that he could not do stairs or get out of the house due to stairs, the insurance company is paying for us to stay in a hotel suite. My THR was April 21, and I started exercise the next day, and went home in 4 days because I did so well in the hospital. A home therapist (thanks to my wonderful insurance) came to my home every day and helped me with therapy. As a result, I was able to give up my walker in 3 weeks, and my cane in 6 weeks. I received a letter from my dr stating he is closing his practice as of Aug 15th. It didn't say why so I can only guess why. Either he is retiring, which I didn't think he was that old, or he is moving on....I hate to think that it could be something worse than those 2 things.
