Sat, 28 Jan 2017 07:29:45 EST Back to running and feels so good! Hi Everybody,

Haven't don't SparkPeople for a long time but last time was a fun experience. I have been back to running for fun about a year ago. I have a Half Marathon coming up on SuperBowl Sunday. It was the first Half I had ever done 7 years ago. Look forward to the group and meeting some fellow runners.
Sun, 22 Jan 2017 15:55:21 EST Blog worthy? Hey fellow road runners, welcome to the new year. I love to read blogs from other sparkers. Sometimes, I come upon a gem. Yet, there are maybe two or three comments. What? That writing was blog worthy. Not your musings of what they did on Tuesday but inspired by something essential in their lives! If you have seen such a blog, pass it on! There others out there like me who love to read them and will comment on those that are blog worthy. (I know another bad Seinfeld reference). Mayb... I'm getting geared up to get back into my normal training routines and get in shape again! Woo hoo! Let's do this! Fri, 25 Nov 2016 13:26:39 EST Road Runners - General Discussion Topics Good morning, everybody! It's a lovely day, but it's going to be blusterier and blusterier (I know, it's not a word) as the day goes on. I tried to run outside in the dark this morning, but the wind made it seem creepy. I felt like a vampire would jump out of the bushes at any given time. So I went to the Y and ran on the treadmill. Not very exciting, but at least I don't have fang marks on my neck!! Fri, 18 Nov 2016 08:11:16 EST November 2016 Miles Challenge Today is a rest day for me but I wanted to get the thread started. My goal is 130 miles. Hi guys! I've been away awhile, but I have a question and I figured that y'all wouldn't be grossed out by a foot question. New Balance changed the construction on my beloved 1080s and I hated them, so I moved into a new shoe a couple months ago (Adidis Energy boost).

I've long considered myself lucky to never have anything go wrong with my toenails. I've never had a black toenail, or lose one, despite thousands of miles run every year. But, now... I've got a toenail that is st... Tue, 9 Aug 2016 23:26:56 EST shorts lifetime How long should shorts last? Seems like the elastic in the waistband gives out after a few years even though the shorts otherwise look like new. For now, I just tie the internal waistband strings and that holds them up. (Of course, it makes toilet breaks more of a nuisance.)

Is there a critical difference between using the waistband elastic vs waistband strings? Am I a cheapskate for thinking my shorts should last a lot longer? Wed, 3 Aug 2016 16:05:13 EST August 2016 Miles Challenge O.k., folks, here we go! Mon, 1 Aug 2016 13:25:26 EST Can I start speed training now? I'm almost done my learn to run (two more weeks!) and we can run in 8 minute intervals and tomorrow we start 10 minute intervals. We will run them twice for a total of 20 minutes of running. Last Friday I decided to push myself and was able to run for 35 minutes. My mind and body could have gone further but I knew my knees would regret it the next day so I stopped. They are always sore the next day but I'm hoping with more weight loss that will get better.

I also figured out my pac... Sun, 17 Jul 2016 12:58:51 EST Frustration with plantar fasciitis Hello,

I've been struggling with plantar fasciitis for over a year now. I first had it in my left foot, which has finally subsided. I started running again and am now experiencing it in my right foot. I gradually increased my runs from a 1/2 mile to 4 miles (adding only a half mile a week). I've been working with a trainer once a week for strength training, which has really helped my core, and I've been doing stretching most days. My flexibility is really bad, so I'm sure that i... Thu, 7 Jul 2016 22:04:01 EST July 2016 mileage goals My goal is to run more than 100.

7/1 4.7 Fri, 1 Jul 2016 16:32:19 EST Does anyone get headaches after they run? I'm still learning to run and can now run for 5 minute intervals x4. Both today and on Monday's run I ended up with a headache later in the day. I never get headaches so I assume it has something to do with the run. I think it also has something to do with the heat. Both days it was 30C with humidity and I ran in the early evening (with the run group). Usually I run two runs on my own and do it early in the am or as the sun sets and haven't had an issue during that time.

Things I'm... Wed, 29 Jun 2016 23:07:59 EST Altitude Training -- Experiences? I'm in New Jersey, which is at sea level, and I'm training for a half-marathon in Florida (also at sea level) in early November. I've tried running mid-day around here in 90 degree heat and humidity to prepare myself for the Florida weather and it completely saps my stamina and it's difficult to breathe the hot, muggy air. Under those conditions, I can do 4 miles if I push, which is only half of what I can do for standard effort at dusk (75 degrees and less humidity).

Since I'll ... Wed, 22 Jun 2016 11:29:14 EST Tramps like us, baby we were born to run! Hi, new to the team here. Had to head it off with a Springsteen line, because he's one of my all-time favorite artists and I'm from NJ. Like ya do.

I started running about 4 years ago because it was one of the only things I knew of that I just couldn't do -- I would get winded after 2 minutes and give up -- and because when I worked in NYC and my workday and commute sucked up all of my time, I needed something quick and efficient. I took a hiatus from running when I had to work ... I'm a marathoner and triathlete. I'm not really training for anything right now, and only averaging 30 to 35 miles per week, on top of three swim days and several yoga sessions. Lately I've been completely exhausted and unmotivated. I've dreaded basically every workout for the last two weeks. I'm normally a morning runner and I haven't been able to drag my butt out of bed for a run without considerable effort. I've been getting my miles in, but it's tough. Is this what b... Thu, 26 May 2016 12:12:20 EST Hello. Just a runner that fell off the wagon! I've not ran since I did the Chicago Marathon Oct 2014! I broke my foot running it and still finished, doing some good damage. So I had to quit running for a long time. I lost my motivation but gained some weight. HEY! That's not fair!
I miss running so much! It helps keep my sanity! I'm slowly coming back. Trying not to trigger that foot! Trying to not feel like a fish out of water. But it is the shape of a normal bra - not a racer style bra.

Today I start looking for tanks and I notice they are pretty much all racerbacks. I found one that is super comfortable and was a great price so I bought two. But is it okay to wear a racerback tank wit... When you wear tights for winter running, how often do your wash your tights? I've heard the apple watch hrm is pretty accurate - it's appealing to me to not have a chest strap and get all the great features of the smart watch.

That being said, I've heard good things about the new Garmin Forerunner 630, but would need to use the chest strap.

Also a fan of fitbit, but the HRM in the new fitbit surge I hear is not very accurate.

What are your recommendations? Sat, 21 Nov 2015 06:33:00 EST New to the team! Hi everyone! I'm new to the team. I just started running this week after realizing how terribly out of shape I am. I made a goal to run a 5k in the spring to keep me motivated to keep running over the winter. My first week has been a bit difficult, but I'm already seeing an improvement over the first day. I'm still doing a lot of walking on my 'run' but I'll get there! I'm excited to feed off of everyone here's love for running! I started running a couple years ago to lose weight. Signed up for the color run the fell out of it. Did the same the following year. This year is different. I started running again last summer using the sp 5k training plans. Now I do 2-4 miles depending on the day. I use a treadmill during the week and run on the street on the weekends. I'm working on a faster 5k now. Trying out runkeeper and nike's app for tracking. Not sure which is better. Open for your reviews! How do you track you... Tue, 14 Apr 2015 15:05:16 EST running I wish I could find a group of people wishing to start a running club in the Gonzales Louisiana area. Anyone out there interested? Sun, 12 Apr 2015 21:44:31 EST New to Team and Renewing a Love for Running I started walking in November 2014. Could barely do 1/4 mile. Each day a few more steps. By Feb I was 15 pounds lighter and walking from 4 to 7 miles daily. Two weeks ago I entered my first 5k in over 22 years. I walked most of it but ran the last few blocks. I started to remember when in High School I ran cross country. The way I felt when it was a good run. So here I am. Training to run more of the next 5K in the end of May. Wed, 8 Apr 2015 15:55:12 EST The worst thing about running... I love running. I think it is pretty much the best. But even the best things have something to complain about, no matter how small. And so I was wondering: what is your 'worst thing about running'? I personally have a couple, but the first one that springs to mind for me: The worst thing about running...

when you somehow get that twig/leaf/rock stuck in your shoe after about 7 minutes and you'd literally have to stop and take off your shoe to get it you end up spendi... Wed, 8 Apr 2015 06:50:14 EST ITBS Recovery Looking for advice/positive experiences with quick ITBS recovery. I have a half marathon on May 2nd and experienced my first issue with ITBS during my long run on Saturday and I am trying to remain positive. I have been a runner for years and this is not my first time running this distance, and I strength train twice a week so ITBS has not been an issue for me in the past. I really want to complete this race...will pull out if necessary so I will be ready for my marathon in the fall, but I am... Tue, 7 Apr 2015 09:27:37 EST New! Hey everyone...I am hoping that running will lead to a healthier me. I did c25k last year about this time after never having run in my life (and I'm in my mid-30s). It was amazing to be able to completed a 5K! I have left myself and my running slide over the winter and I'm really excited to get back to it this week, along with a better eating plan. I have a 5K scheduled for June and I'm hoping to crank out my best time (which isn't so great, but best for me). I'll enjoy the tips and enco... I started off with a 5k in March and ended up running a half marathon by October 2009. Unfortunately, I suffered a knee injury. Just as I was about to come back from that, I got a blood clot in my leg. The slow slide started and life got in the way. Well, I'm back and have started running again. I have my first 5k in a week. It will be ugly and it may even require a run/walk combination but i... Sun, 22 Mar 2015 14:46:36 EST Looking for the path back to running... Good Morning!

I'm not very good at introductions, but I know I should be more social, so here it is.

I am 37 and have been into running for about a decade now. I am not particularly good at running as I'm about 6'4" and built like a viking, but I find that when I'm running, life is just so much better. I prefer distance over speed and at my best was doing 10k five days a week (though it was taking me over an hour to get there). Unfortunately due to a series of unfortunat... Sat, 21 Feb 2015 18:40:08 EST You know you're a runner when . . . . . . you step out your front door, you run 5 miles in single digit temps with 20 mph wind gusting to 30 mph in your face at times, and when you get back home you decide it's too nasty to go out and drive somewhere. Tue, 20 Jan 2015 12:50:40 EST Almost 60 Hi, I'm a First Nation woman from Canada. I first started my journey to weight loss February 2012 and during that first year I lost almost 40 lbs., strictly from walking, joining a gym and eating healthy. The 2nd year for the first 7-8 months I took off and additional 22 lbs and for some reason or another I lost motivation. I rejoined the gym again last May but my attendance has been sporadic. So here I am...with a definite plan and stick-to-if-ness...determined to succeed where I stopped. Oh... Tue, 20 Jan 2015 09:51:36 EST Bunion Help I have bunions on both feet. Not conducive to a good run. I looked at the athletic shoe store and they had some things but nothing that really stood out to me. Looked on line, not finding a whole lot. I just joined the group. I've been running for just over a year and running seriously for about six or seven months. I have done a few 5k races, 3 10k races and a 5 mile race. I am training for a 15k which is in February and for a half in April. I never ran a day in my life before this so this feels pretty awesome! I have some structural issues with my hips/femurs, so I tend to compensate for that and it makes me fatigued. But I am determined and won't give up! Thu, 1 Jan 2015 21:10:39 EST 2,015 in 2015? I was actually given one to help with my marathon training because with two babies at home, getting out to run on the road has only been happening on weekends and this way I can run during nap-time. Sat, 19 Jul 2014 10:45:44 EST Keepin the motivation up when race day is far away We are looking at a half, but the race is 7 months away. It will be my 6th. I did a half last year that was many months away. I thought it would help bc it would be a slow build on increasing mileage. Looking back, I feel like I kind of burned out a little bit and my finishing time reflected that as well.

So I came up with some ideas to maybe help me keep me going and of course I want the opinion of Spark because there are so many of us here at different abilities and experiences. ... Wed, 16 Jul 2014 23:19:28 EST Water stop: hose & trash can/bag-safe? Did a 5 mile race this morning and had fun. Was a little iffy by what I saw at the water stops. As it was sponsored by a newspaper, there were tons of photos online. Photos make it pretty clear how the water stops worked:

A garden hose came out to the street. A 55 gallon trash can was lined with a black trash bag. The can was filled with water from the hose, then a pitcher was dipped in the can and used to fill paper cups on the table.

Between the garden hose and the tra... Wed, 28 May 2014 16:50:58 EST Running + Asthma + Allergies = UGH I'm a lifelong asthmatic currently training for a marathon. My asthma has been completely under control for years, requiring only a rescue inhaler a couple times a week, if that. Of course, I always have it with me when I run and would occasionally need it at the beginning of my run or after the big hills. Recently, however, I've been DYING, and using my inhaler over and over and not feeling any relief.

Like many parts of the country, we're also having giant pollen storms and I... I don't have a time line, I don't like to have that much pressure on myself, but when I feel ready I will find one in my area and go for it! Then of course I'll want to do a 10k and that's where I stop myself...for now:) Fri, 9 May 2014 22:16:56 EST eek! just registered for a full marathon!!! Ok. It's actually my second full and I think i'm mostly freaking out because it's 6 months away-- like it should be for me to train, but I'm full of butterflies!!

It's supposed to be "the easiest marathon in America" and has a 6 hr finish time. I completed a tough marathon last fall in 5:55:33, so I SHOULD be able to do this. eek! Another 100% whole grain english muffin with turkey & honey ham cold cuts for lunch. A handful of almonds for another snack. Another banana if I ran that day. Running has always been my biggest passion but due to some medical issues I gained a lot of weight and injured myself every time I tried to run. I'm a little discouraged at starting out from nothing so to speak, although I have kept my fitness up with strenuous biking. I ran a couple months ago and was so discouraged with my body that I haven't tried again. I think I was unrealistic though to expect that I could run even... Hi everyone,

I was wondering what your experience has been with running groups. Good, mixed, not great? It would be nice to meet other runners and have someone understand my excitement for it. At the same time, I generally average 10:30 to 12:00 per mile depending on how far I'm going and being the slowest of the group is a bit intimidating. So, yes, please share your experiences and if you're curious about joining a running group, I'd like to hear from you, too! Thu, 24 Apr 2014 09:34:50 EST cell phone holder? Sun, 13 Apr 2014 15:40:53 EST Hello Hi all. I've been running 2-4 miles for a couple of years on a regular basis, but this year started off with a 10K program to challenge myself and to break away from the treadmill and get out on some of the really nice trails that we have around my area. Did well, had some mile split PRs and am trying to incorporate more longer runs into my weekends. Recently did my first organized 5K, doing another one this month, and am contemplating a HM this fall. Looking to increase my distance and l... Why not drop by her page and wish her a happy one and bomb her with SparkGoodies?

INNEA#comments
Mon, 6 Jan 2014 10:07:40 EST New to the team I was running on and off for the past 2.5 years - last 6 months I have been consistently running and I enjoy it.

I completed a 10K on Thanksgiving and last week ran 7 miles - longest distance ran since high school - which was a really long time ago.

20

Training for a 1/2 marathon in May. Thu, 26 Dec 2013 07:10:23 EST Nike + Application Friends Hello,
I have been religiously using the Nike+ application on my iPhone. I have one friend who used to run quite a bit and we were friends as well on the Nike app. However, she has since stopped running and I miss being able to compete and compare times, etc. If anyone is uses the app to track running and would like to "friend" me, my user name is CELLOTHERE00 just as it is here.
363 Wed, 4 Dec 2013 09:18:57 EST December 2013 run into the New Year Ok, I decided to start the December 2013 miles challenge but give it a slightly different name. Here we go running into the final stretch of 2013 and into 2014!

Goal: 150 miles

12/01 6.1/6.1 Sun, 1 Dec 2013 13:44:23 EST New to team I recently found this Spark Team, thanks to its position on the points leaderboards for running. It looks like a better fit for me than Half Marathon (which is an aspiration rather than a reality right now) or the 5K Your Way team (since I routinely run further than 5K).

I became a runner in the autumn of 2011 after going through 5K Your Way training, and learned to run in cold weather as autumn transitioned to winter. I sat out most of the summer in 2012 and 2013 with injury, go... Fri, 29 Nov 2013 15:17:31 EST Colder while running after weight loss? Hey all, I had a foot injury and so took an off-season. I kept losing weight anyway, and when I start running again soon I will have lost just over 20 lbs.

In preparation for running outside, I'm wondering if anyone has felt colder running outside after losing weight? Did you have to wear more layers? Or was it not noticeable?

Thanks! Sat, 23 Nov 2013 16:06:21 EST Tried out my new tech gear... I'm the person in the room who is always cold when everyone else is warm, so when I decided to run outside this winter, I did my research and bought all the technical clothing I would need to keep warm.

Today, it is 20F with 25 mph winds, so I thought I'd try out some of my gear. I put on my Smartwool base layer, my insulating fleece layer, and my windproof polypropylene layer...and was miserably overheated. By the time I was finished running, I felt like I was slogging along in a... Sat, 23 Nov 2013 14:54:40 EST SNOW! We had a major winter storm move in yesterday that's expected to dump 21 inches altogether. I had every intention of running this morning, but I woke to find 8 inches of fresh, undisturbed snow on the ground this morning. I made a decision not to run because of safety, but I don't really know if there was a safety issue. I'm a new runner and haven't run in snow before. Do any of the more experience runners in the group have experience with deep snow running? Is there a snow depth or cond... Thu, 21 Nov 2013 13:35:10 EST How Do I Fix My Form? The salesperson at my local running store says I run with my feet pointed somewhat outward instead of straight ahead, that my arches collapse a little and that my knees roll inward. She had me try a pair of insoles with stiff arch support but I found them painful. She said they weren't right for me if they caused pain.

I've been doing exercises to strengthen my hips and fix an imbalance in my quads prescribed by my physical therapist for patellofemoral pain syndrome for months. It'... Thu, 21 Nov 2013 12:57:58 EST learning to run Hi Everyone
I am a new runner. Ive done a couple 5ks this year and will be attempting a 10k next weekend. I am looking for motivation and buddies to help keep me going through out the winter, and people to share and hear about others journeys. Sun, 17 Nov 2013 15:00:17 EST Help, my tank hit empty without warning Science of running question

I got home after a 22k run on Sunday and just wilted. It took 36hrs (two nights of sleep) to get off the couch. I just felt like I'd lost a liter of blood, all wilted and droopy. No energy, low brain function, spacey. But the funny thing was I had zero, nada, muscular pain or tendons or joints. I didn't have any of the normal signs of a hard run. The run itself was hard for the first 30minutes on the flat feeling tired and lead-like but as I starte... Mon, 11 Nov 2013 19:42:38 EST Altitude running vs. sea level I live in Utah and the regular routes I run are between 5100 and 8400 feet above sea level.

In December we are traveling to Hawaii and I'm curious as to what is realistic to expect, result-wise. We'll be at maybe 1000 feet and I'm planning to take advantage of that and see if I can shave some time off of my 5k and 10k times.

I've done a little research and a lot of what I am finding says it doesn't make a big difference. Does anyone have experience with this? Sat, 9 Nov 2013 12:58:25 EST What's your "Running Mantra"? What do you tell yourself while you are running to get through a rough mile? (or a rough run altogether). Here are a couple of new ones for me:

"It hurts because you're doing it, the pain would stop if you stopped, but then you wouldn't be doing it. "- thought of this while holding goal pace during a recent half marathon

"Exhaustion is not a reason to stop. The only reason to stop is injury." Wed, 6 Nov 2013 09:59:13 EST in training question food & calorie counts I'm currently in training for a marathon. I wanted to be down to 120 which according to here I should have already met that goal. I hit 121 then it jumped up to 124.2 and I have held that for 2 weeks. I fixed my tracker several times to allow more food but it still will not allow me above 1550 calories. Here is the thing I'm irritated about. Halloween landed on my rest day but I decided to do a little bit of something which burned a little over 400 calories. I took in over 2000 calorie... Mon, 4 Nov 2013 11:48:47 EST What to look for in a treadmill? I'm thinking about getting a treadmill. Sometimes the weather just isn't inviting for outdoor runs. My gym has a hard and fast 30 minute limit for treadmill usage during peak hours and I'm trying to stay 10k fit through the winter.

What do I look for in a treadmill? Any idea what price range is the minimum to get a sturdy, durable machine that won't be super noisy? Sun, 3 Nov 2013 00:34:53 EST Rain Gear for Running I just started running in April so have no experience running through a fall and winter. It rains here pretty much every day from October to the end of April. When I say it rains, it really pours down. Temps are usually from just above freezing to the low to mid 50s Farenheit. It's gray, gloomy and fairly dark.

What gear do I need from head to toe to stay warm (but not too warm) and dry?
Related question, any tips for a waterproof way to carry my iPhone for safety?

Sun, 3 Nov 2013 00:29:46 EST November 2013 miles challenge Anyone up for a mileage challenge?
I'll aim for 150. Fri, 1 Nov 2013 12:52:04 EST Running outdoors in winter I've been running for over three years now and have a few 5Ks under my belt, so now I'm thinking about doing a 10K and half-marathon next year. In the past during the winter, I would run on the treadmill. This year, however, I have decided that I'd like to keep running outdoors as much as I can. There are several reasons for this:

1. My treadmill is old, and the display has gone out, so I don't use it anymore because I don't know how fast or or how far I'm running. Unfortunate... Fri, 25 Oct 2013 09:21:24 EST I've lost my mind Hi everyone, I think I've lost my mind.

This is normally the time I get bit by the racing bug so I start signing up for races like crazy, but this time around I'm going big. I just signed up for the Monumental Marathon on Nov 2 which is next Saturday. I can't believe I'm doing this as I swore off marathons after running my last one...

last marathon was just this past Sunday in Detroit. It was tough but I guess I enjoyed it more than I thought I would.
<B... Fri, 25 Oct 2013 05:40:20 EST
