They don't have to be for Christmas.

I'll start things off with a charitable donation. But ideally I give a donation plus creativity. For instance one year I donated money in my sister's name to buy a pig for a Haitian family.

I made up a "save the children" type adoption packet along with a fabric portrait (a thrifted stuffed pig toy) of the pig that my sister was adopting. It was fun to make and fun for her to receive. Wed, 15 Dec 2010 10:17:14 EST Q 'n A: Any eco-frie ndliness in your holidays? Is there anything in your holiday routines that is particularly eco-friendly?

I know that some team members re-use or buy used decorations and of course some live with a smaller foot print.

I have given eco-friendly gifts. Last year I gave my sister a particular brand of reusable shopping bag that is a favorite of ours. Also my wife and I don't exchange gifts with each other. We don't end up buying things that are not wanted which will end up in the landfill. So, just a reminder, if you use reusable bags, make sure to wash them periodically. I did mine today. 2 Sun, 27 Jun 2010 14:02:28 EST Repurposing Fun -What have you found new uses for? I live in a tiny little apartment where I'm loathe to keep things about which I'm not using. I guess that's a vacation. 20 Sat, 20 Mar 2010 11:17:41 EST Another Question for 3/19 Hello again all,

I am in the process of moving and am going to loose my internet connection sooner than I had planned. So, this most important question is...who would like to take over the daily questions for the remainder of March? (Or even part, then pass the torch.) Sorry William, when I said I would take over this month my plans were very different. Have a wonderful Spring all!

-Rachel Fri, 19 Mar 2010 14:08:32 EST Our Daily Question 3/19 Hello,

What is something "strange" (outside the western norm)that you have eaten and enjoyed?

Mine is jellyfish. It was cold, and marinated in a kind of sweet pickley kind of stuff. It was really chewy but pretty tasty. Fri, 19 Mar 2010 14:00:26 EST Our Daily Question 3/18 Hello again,

Is there a "green(ish)" product that you have found but didn't know existed? What is it and how did you find it?

I found Ecos (I think they were called) frames today for my glasses. The frames are made out of recycled materials (how much?) and the case is 100% organic cotton, and the sales lady said they plant a tree for each pair purchased. (true?) They were my favourites and less expensive anyhow so it worked out. 36 Thu, 18 Mar 2010 16:24:39 EST Our Daily Question 3/17 A good day to you all,

Here is another natural cleaning question. Have you ever used a natural cleaning product that you didn't care for? What was it and what didn't you like?

As much as I love Trader Joe's cleaning products, I don't care for their automatic dishwasher soap. I doesn't seem to dissolve well and the dishes don't get very clean. (I should note though, that the dishwasher in this apartment is as cheap as they come.) Wed, 17 Mar 2010 11:17:41 EST Our Daily Question 3/16 Good day all,

What do you like to drink in the morning?

I'm an iced tea person myself. Do you like daylight savings and such or do you think they should just leave time alone already? 128

I did not spring forward but two of my clocks do so automatically. So I woke up this morning thinking "wow, I slept until 9!" And I think they should leave time alone. I like the spring forward because I don't like when it gets dark before dinner in the winter, but I want them to leave it alone already... Sun, 14 Mar 2010 12:40:53 EST Our Daily Question 3/13 Happy weekend all,

Do you garden or have a green thumb? What is your best plant or garden tip?

I do not have a green thumb. I'm not even sure why we knock on wood. (I know it is gesture intended not to tempt fate, but why knocking and why wood?) I know the origins of some other superstitious traditions but not this one, so if anyone knows I'd love... I try to reduce my ecological footprint as much as possible, not just food but everything, and I'm always open to discussion. I'm looking forward to sharing ideas and learning new things. Thu, 2 Apr 2009 19:54:35 EST The Green Connoisseur Hi, I'd like to introduce you to a website that directs it's focus toward developing a wonderful lifestyle while keeping the planet in mind. It is called The Green Connoisseur. They talk about everything from travel and fashion to building, architecture, pets and much more. I know you all will love it.
Tue, 31 Mar 2009 19:48:57 EST Hi from Western Washington Hi everyone! I'm Dan, and I live in Western Washington State. It's a pretty good place to live if you are trying to be green. I think there's a decent culture here of people who respect the environment and try to do their best to keep it in good shape. At least you don't get weird looks when you re-use grocery bags or separate your recycling from your garbage.

The eventual goal (aside from losing weight and getting healthy, obviously) is to own a decent sized piece of land wher... I was in Goodwill yesterday and found a KILLER deal - four very nice fancy decorative pillows for our bed. Tue, 24 Mar 2009 23:37:15 EST I am wondering if other communities in the US.. are having a problem lately getting rid of their recyclables? We have mandatory recycling here in our small town, something Dh and I support 100%. However, recently our recycling center at the land fill can't find anyone to take the recycled materials. Any other towns having that issue? Fri, 20 Mar 2009 10:11:24 EST The Girl Who SILENCED THE UN for 6 minutes I am part of a team at Sp that discuss issues. Politics, racism, religion, anything. Sometimes the discussion gets heated, but since we all are committed to respect and acceptance, we might disagree, but we get along well, and even become friends (LOL). I just want to share with you a link that was discussed there. It happened in 1992, during the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It is shocking that a 13 yo is so tuned with reality. Wed, 4 Feb 2009 15:42:18 EST Reduce, Reuse, Recycle You hear so much focus anymore about how many things can be recycled. I recently received a new recycle bin from my township. Its twice the size of an allowable trash can! Recycle bins are popping up at fairs and events. So it seems that recycling is on the rise.

Is that really the best option? The phrase 'reduce, reuse, recycle' is all but forgotten it seems. I saw the other day someone refer to it as a hierarchy. We should first reduce our waste. Reuse what we must have. ... Fri, 9 Jan 2009 00:05:15 EST Hello from Colorado Hello everyone. I am a newish SP person and loving some of the forums on this site. I live as green as possible but I drive a car (when I am not on my bike, feet, or public transpo), I travel by plane (and do carbon offsets, but come on, it is still traveling), and support my CSA and local farmers. I just moved to Colorado in April 2008 and am jazzed by how close my food and water sources are to me. It is also super easy to exercise here without having to jump on a machine plugged into a ... Thu, 8 Jan 2009 22:49:25 EST Water footprint Everybody is used to hear the expression "carbon footprint", but a new one is coming about. I saw this article and found it very interesting. I have been noticing lots of trees just dumped in the trash. AS I come from a country where we do not do the real tree thing, I was wondering. Isn't there any use for the trees that are not wanted anymore? Once I had (in my old country) a real Xmas tree, but since it was in a pot, I used it for 8 years (then I came to the US). It just seems a lot of waste. Does anybody have any idea of how to use those trees? Thu, 8 Jan 2009 00:34:14 EST Hi Hi, I am new to this, so be patient with me. Well, I guess I should say that I am a new Sparker, but I have been working on the green for a very long time. I own about 20 cloth bags that I carry everywhere from the grocery store to Home Depot. I shop organically, and I can make 1 roll of paper towel last almost 2 months. I also fold cloth napkins every time I do laundry, and have for almost 20 years. I am excited to see so many other people start doing the same. I am looking forward to ... We've always recycled cans and magazines but where I live there is no roadside pick-up so we have to drive our stuff to a drop-off, but so far we've bought all energy saver light bulbs and this summer I'm going to put up a clothes line.
