SparkPeople PENGUIN RUNNERS Team Messageboard Anyone still active on this team? Was super excited to see a Penguin running grout but there is not much activity. If anyone is still active, how often , far do you run at what pace? Finished my first half marathon this year at a 12:52 pace. Love to hear from others. Sun, 18 Dec 2016 09:32:46 EST September 2014 Personal Challenges Okay, so what's your personal goal this month? For me, I've been hoping to make 45 miles in a month for a VERY LONG time, but with a sore ankle hounding me for the first full week of September, that doesn't seem likely, so I will set my goal at 35 miles. Respond back - share your goal and your progress and the challenges you face as the month unfolds! Sun, 7 Sep 2014 14:29:16 EST Hi and Happy New Year Howdy, fellow penguins! I'm glad to be among my own kind at last. I'm a 55-soon-to-be-56 year old woman, I've been running (well, plodding) on and off for most of my life. I've run a lot of half marathons, 2 marathons, and am training for a spring half right now. I've been sidelined by bronchitis for the entire holiday, and pretending that reading Runners World will work as training. While feeling sorry for myself I surfed around and finally found you! Glad to be here. 527 Fri, 3 Jan 2014 15:12:58 EST January 2014 Chat Thread Hello there Penguins!!

I'm curious as to what your 2014 goals are! I plan on running for 30 minutes starting around 5:15 a.m. I am most concerned about my safety. I plan on running on my neighborhood streets that are dead-ends with cul-de-sacs. What precautions do other runners take on these type of runs? I am heading to a running store most likely to but some reflective gear. Thu, 3 May 2012 09:37:58 EST Running with a faster group as a slower runner I am both a new runner and slow runner. I did a C25K program in a group and liked the social aspect. Now that the C25K program is done, I decided to continue running with the group. Unfortunately most of the C25K runners my speed just did the program to run a 5K. They are gone. That leaves me with runners who are faster than I am.

I have continued to attend the runs but I am usually left in the dust in minutes to run the hour by myself. Fri, 1 Jul 2011 11:34:01 EST Hello from new member :) Hello everyone! I rejoined sparkpeople in early May and I can't believe it took me so long to find this team. I'm a total penguin and probably have been since I was a kid. I sometimes jog with a local running group and my running pace is about the same as the others' walking pace when they're *injured*, lol. I used to try really hard to keep up, but to most of them a 10 minute per mile pace is a "nice, easy, and relaxed warm-up pace" whereas my fast runs have me averaging about 11 minutes per... Wed, 22 Jun 2011 09:01:51 EST I found my speed! I decided a while ago to become a runner - not a racer but a runner....for no one but me. I signed up for Run Like a Girl HM (10/2011), Tinkerbell HM (01/2012) and have declared that I will do one of my local FM in 05/2012 - again for no one but me. Then I found a dicussion group about Penguin Running - and it spoke to me. I went to the bookstore to get Marathoning for Mortals and picked up The Courage to Start and No Need for Speed. Tue, 31 May 2011 13:43:24 EST Boys Town Memorial Day 5-Mile Run I waddle my way through this one. First, this was the longest distance I had attempted to date, so I was exactly ready for the endurance. I think I started out to quick and really started to lose energy about mile 3. But, I made it. 1:12:33. Slow, but I did it. Plus, the wind was gusting over 50mph during the race. It made it difficult in some places. Day 3 of Week 5 has been a highlight of my life despite the fact that like many of us my 20 minutes of walking was essentially the same speed I can speed walk. But it was on from there and now I love running in my own special way. Sat, 19 Mar 2011 08:51:43 EST Spark People Has Virtual Races Every Week Spark People has virtual races every week. I love John Bingham- what a great philosophy to actually enjoy the run! So what if it is slow- as people have said- it's still faster than all those sitting at home on a couch! I did a half marathon a couple years ago with the intent of running the whole thing as fast as I could- but I was sick the day of the race and made it about 8 miles and then had to alternate between walking and running. Sun, 15 Aug 2010 14:01:30 EST Fit Sense FS-1 speedometer I have a Fit Sense FS-1 speedometer with a watch and a shoe pod that I have had for some time. Sun, 13 Jun 2010 14:23:42 EST Hello, Hello Hello, my name is BJ and I'm a Penguin Runner and proud of it. I thoroughly enjoyed reading The Courage To Start. Mon, 1 Jun 2009 19:16:12 EST Coming to grips with being a penguin I ran my first 5K in four years yesterday. My time was 33:07 and I have to admit that I was/am a little disappointed. I know that I am slow and that I have a long way to go to be fast or even sort of fast. But at the same time I wanted to be under 30 mins. So I guess that's a goal for the future, something to train towards.

I am proud I started...and finished. I know that is in itself an accomplishment. But I can't help feeling a little disappointed. Tue, 26 May 2009 15:58:37 EST General Question about Run/Walk programs I am just beginning to train for a 10K, then I will jump to half marathon training for Disney Half in January 2010. I would like to plan on running an entire 10K, but at what point and how do you decide at what level you run/walk and if you should plan on run/walk strategy. I was thinking right now of doing the half with the run 4-6 minutes and walk 1 minute. Back in November, I walked my first 5K race. I watched as nearly everyone passed me within the first ten minutes of the race. I was walking at a good pace (so I thought) and my legs would literally not go any faster. I kept thinking to myself, "Why am I doing this? I'm the largest woman here. This is crazy."

But I kept going and finally finished - right at the one hour mark. I wasn't last, but I could see that golf cart not too far behind me... Mon, 29 Dec 2008 02:27:46 EST Hi. New to the Penguin and Running Hi. Not sure what to say. I'm doing the C25k program and am entering wk 3. My friends have laughed, but in a good way, because I tend to run slower than they walk. I just stick my tongue out and keep on. Hope to learn lots. Sat, 13 Dec 2008 23:00:20 EST December 2008 Mileage Challenge I need to get my miles back up to where they were. I showed up for my local turkey trot this morning and even with my training consisting of a wii fit run around my living room and a mile jog a few weeks ago, I finished right at 38 minutes! I just kept looking for people who had bouncey ponytails and tried to pick up their pep.

I'm so glad I just went! Thu, 27 Nov 2008 09:59:53 EST IT Band So I went to the Orthopedic Doc this morning to have him check out my right knee, the one which gave me the problems in my half marathon. Just as I suspected, it's IT Band. I am glad I know for sure what the problem is and now I know how to fix it, rest, ice and ibuprofen. He said it could take a few weeks to completely heal it and it might be something that aggravates me from time to time.

He said if I do run on it, it won't hurt it anymore, but it will also take longer to he... Sat, 30 Aug 2008 10:23:56 EST Another New Penguin Hello everyone I'm Tracy. I am a new runner and definetly a penguin. Never in a million years did I think that I could be a runner. I'm very overweight, out of shape and completely unathletic. I have no idea how fast I run because I run outside, but I know I'm pretty slow and I'm fine with that. I finsihed the Couch to 5K program a few weeks ago and I'm trying to keep up my commitment to run 30 min 3X per week. I've only managed to get out once this week due to weather and schedule confli... Thu, 24 Jul 2008 12:15:11 EST New Penguin joining in... Hi there! I am fairly new to running, I started on Feb. 1st of this year, never having run before in my life. I just recently finished reading "The Courage to Start" John Bingham book and I can identify with so much of what he wrote! I am not a fast runner by any means, I just like to run, so I guess that makes me a Penguin Runner.
To date I have run 3- 5k races and will be running my first 10K race on Saturday 7/26. Thu, 24 Jul 2008 10:56:24 EST Mid-Summer Challenge I've been trying to think of something different us Penguins can do for a challenge. As a teenager, I read the book by Jim Fixx called The Complete Book of Running. I don't remember doing much running then, but I wore the book out, lol.
Another good one I got recently is called, Marathon! by Jeff Galloway. It has a lot of good information in it, whether you plan on running a marathon or not. Fri, 28 Sep 2007 00:49:02 EST October Mileage Challenge It was SUNPANTHER's idea to have a monthly mileage challenge. I think it's a great idea, so here we go. Thanks SUNPANTHER!
Create a post here to keep track of your miles. Does someone want to suggest a target number for the group? Fri, 28 Sep 2007 00:33:36 EST Running Websites If you know of any good websites for runners, post the url here.

Thu, 27 Sep 2007 23:53:13 EST Weekly Group Run We'll log in here for our weekly group run. It can be a 5k, 10k, or just a mile or two. Whatever level you are at, go for a run, and tell us about it here. Tell us whatever you want to about your running experience. You can run outside or on a treadmill.
But have fun!!!
295 Thu, 27 Sep 2007 20:43:46 EST New Penguin I'm not through with the book yet but I LOVE it. Right now I'm working on getting rid of all the "should"s I can.

42f, sahm, quarter-time student, full-time reader, looking to get sleek, trim and sexy. Plus, walking evens out my moods ;) which is always a good thing. Sun, 24 Jun 2007 16:00:10 EST HI Guys!!! Hey guys! I just started the Courage to Start a few days ago. I love John Bingham- I read No Need for Speed a few years ago.

To Scarlett- How is the job going? Where the heck has everyone been on the Vet Med team?? Thu, 31 May 2007 20:34:28 EST Hi! Glad to find another penguin! I really like John Bingham's approach. I read his book "Marathoning for Mortals" and it helped me finish my first marathon earlier this year. Yes, I finished behind 95% (or more) of the participants, but I finished! And now I continue to be a committed runner, although I think the half-marathon is the distance I like best.

With losing weight, though, I have not been so successful. So I hope Sparkpeople will help keep me motivated to watch my food intake.

Tue, 24 Apr 2007 10:58:24 EST
