Moon-With the way this weather is shaping up I think you could take them to Malta Food Bank through June and someone would be glad to have them. emoticon emoticon

I am back at the old couple's home for a couple weeks so I am hoping to go through her closets. I left a note for the regular caregiver and told her I had taken all the clothes that were too small out of the downstairs closet and up to one of the over-stuffed closets in the unused bedrooms upstairs. I was so frustrated trying to get her dressed to go out and all the stuff was just too small. There are some of those awful old polyester double knit pant suits from the 70's that can just go to the garbage. But a lot of beautiful clothes that her kids and stepkids buy her for holidays that still have the tags on them. She just lives in a night shirt! I asked her daughter to go through them when she visited between Christmas and New Year's but she didn't. Rosie said I could have any that I wanted. I just laughed and told her she's way too short! I took hundreds of empty hangers out of those closets before the kids visited in December just in case they wanted to have space to hang their own clothes. Donated them to the giveaway house - well, they don't give it away free anymore - and they were delighted to have them.

emoticon Almost every piece of clothing I own came from a thrift store! I have some gorgeous, good brands of blazers I bought at Goodwill in GTF or Helena, especially when I was working office reception! I culled back half of them&can only keep the ones I wear! So I've started wearing them w/my jeans to the movie or out to dinner! It was so hard to pass up "a good deal"! What helped was asking myself " Would you pay full price for this? " I did get a pair of jeans at Sally Ann's on Saturday but had thrown out a threadbare pair earlier in the week & put 6 pair in the giveaway bag-either too small, too short, too big or just not comfortable! I don't donate clothes here. Either take them to GTF Rescue Mission Thrift or to Helena. Have a backseat full because of having my Friday appointment cancelled in GTF. Been rescheduled for April 12th so will leave them in the car until then! Worry about mice in the "garage" so that's the best option!

Seems like I wear the same things over&over so that is also helping me feel okay about letting them go! Having clothes that are beautiful but too small is supposedly an incentive to lose weight! They just reinforce my feelings of failure! That was an Eye-opener!!

My wardrobe is mostly t-shirts and sweaters. I plan to keep the t-shirts, but should go through the sweaters as I have some that haven't been worn in years. Most of them are thrift store buys and I have a few that I wear instead of sweat shirts. It wouldn't hurt to get rid of a bunch of them. I usually take them to the Food Bank in Malta so I feel I should sort them out, wash them, and then store them until fall as the Food Bank has limited storage space. Even if I took them elsewhere, I would have to wait until I do a road trip.

emoticon I have several areas I started & will also just keep chipping away at! I love Hawaiian shirts! Friday is always Hawaiian shirt day for me and has been for many, many years! My collection is huge! Found a website that sends a whole box of shirts plus sometimes other luau items to military units! Started by a soldier's mother! I love that! I am going to go through and find as many as I am ready to let go of and send them to the site! It makes me so happy! Thinking of having a luau party at the senior center& taking pictures of the seniors in those shirts & including those in the box! I have assorted sizes and some vintage! Will get a count this week (hopefully)! Just feels like a wonderful way to declutter & share!

I got maybe a third of the 40 bags - most of it paper clutter (garbage) around my computer desk and table. I need to keep chipping away at it.

Today I wound up about 2 dozen skeins of yarn into balls to get ready to use them up in several knitting projects. Now to haul them upstairs and get them put away...

I did get 40 Bags...and over half of it was stuff to donate or recycle! I'm going to keep working on the clutter. Have a new motivation to get rid of a ton of clothes I never wear and probably never will. "The time has come to say goodbye...." but I think I'll keep posting on the thread as I progress along!

We had snow on and off all day here but even though it came down hard and fast, it didn't come down for very long and none of it stuck. I'm still doing my little boy channeling the creek water with the ice in the alley. A little nervous about the trip but we Montana Girls are tough...plus, one of my oldest friends is now living in GTF so if I don't feel like driving back tomorrow I can sleep over at her place and have a bag packed just in case!

Computer (internet?) is really wonky tonight. Must be the winds? Certainly not as strong as they predicted but I can hear them howling out there.

The backseat of the car is full! I had my BFF download the copy of the book I wanted to feature on my Hoarder team..."The Year of Less". I share an amazon library with her and her sister so don't even have a clue how the books download but I got an e-mail from Hay House that had it on special for $1.99 so sent her the request...and like the great pal that she is, she put it in our library. I only read the first chapter but when she was talking about her clothes I realized there were so many more that I could let go of, that her reasoning was much more sound than mine...so I filled 3 more bags. Made a huge difference in that overstuffed closet. I know there are a lot more I will let go of but I had a bazillion errands to run today and so had to do it between work and errands. Now I've finished the dishes at my mother's and got a load of clothes in the dryer and feel like it's about time to take my bath and wash my hair and call it a night. Plenty more trips to GTF to donate things and the semi-annual senior citizen rummage sale will probably be in mid-May (at least that's the latest from the grapevine down there). If I get more bagged up tonight I will be pleased but not going to push myself. I'm tired and would rather get a good night's sleep in case the roads are crappy tomorrow!

Today (Wed) after I finished running errands and grocery shopping for Alvira I came home & made turkey noodle soup from some turkey bone broth I simmered yesterday and a new batch of turkey rice dog food. Chopped some carrot&celery stix as long as I was dicing them for soup&dog food anyway. Read about 10 pages in a new book & fell asleep! "Napped" from 4:30 until 9! Just finished up the dishes, the dogs have eaten& settled in & I'm going to go through a pile of clothes from the junk room! Hoping to fill the backseat of the car so I can drop off a big load in GTF when I go for my appointment on Friday!

Posted this last night on another thread...
I went berserk in the middle of the night! Looking for Easter cards & Easter basket stuff & some decorations I was sure were in here somewhere! Worked from 2-8 a.m.?!!! Took a bath, stopped by the courthouse to pick up a form, had my taxes done at 9:15, brought in 3 boxes of Easter goodies (since Tues. is the big nutrition meal & busiest day at the center) and finished the Easter/Spring decorating just before the crowd arrived! Hauled 6 bags of garbage out across the icy alley in the dark! Just kept finding stuff I didn't want to keep! Made my fake asparagus soup&ate, then fell asleep in the recliner until my massage appointment at 3! Feel like I made a huge dent in the junk room so it was worth it. Got my 2nd wind during my seminar tonight!

Love the meme about getting what you want by getting rid of what you don't. emoticon

I'm really hoping we get some of those high winds they are predicting so some of the ground will dry out! Not at all excited about more snow-especially since I have to drive to GTF on Friday! Got 2 sacks of magazines to take to the sr center in the morning?

I just blogged about being crabby. I am so tired of chipping ice and having to put on the boots-today they needed chains-just to get out of the yard. I feel like one of those little boys who is messing around trying to re-route the creek. I am trying to use my hoe to scrape some 'valleys' for the water to flow on down the alley. It's pooling and then running into the garage. It also freezes the gate in place during the night. I go out after it freezes and it's easier to chip it out as sheets of ice and chuck it than to try to sweep or scoop it.

Got rid of a bag of papers to recycling but kept a few newspapers to use to wrap a dozen old vases to pack off to the rescue mission thrift when I go to GTF on Friday. Was feeling very proud of myself for having all my tax stuff together so it was no big deal to check it all. Having them done at the senior center tomorrow. I can't figure out how to do the MT state taxes online without paying for that so will just continue to use the AARP site...even though I'm not a 'senior' yet!

Good for you guys!

I am sporadically working on the decluttering. I can actually see half of my computer desk...

I have managed to get rid of 5-6 small wastebaskets of paper stuff. I have several containers of kitchen waste that need to go to the compost pile. I need to put on my rubber knee boots and wade through the snow to get there.

It looks like tomorrow will be the last chance this month to get out there as we are supposed to have another blast of winter starting Tuesday night... I'm starting to wonder if we will even see 50's by May!!

Completely finished my 5 year accumulation of paperwork/filing this weekend. Sorted 4 boxes of documentation into filing, tossing, shredding and documents need to complete this year's taxes. Huge job and now I can get back to keeping up with it daily instead of ignoring the ever growing pile again.

I'll be keeping this going throughout the year as I started decluttering and simplifying the beginning of 2018 and have accomplished more this year than any year I've attempted in the past.

The benefits of healthy choices far outweighs the number on the scale. Let's continue to reduce our risk of disease, build strong muscle and bone, stay flexible and mobile, improve our cardiovascular system, help our body heal itself, increase our energy level, relieve stress, slow the aging process (and who doesn't want that ?!?)... and so much more.
Don't give the scale any power. Take note of the number then get off the scale and live your life.

Great advice in your last post.

I'm currently decluttering over 5 years worth of 'paperwork' that I ignored. I'm almost through the last box. Then most of it is going to a company to shred. Some will be filed for next year's taxes and some is being used for this year's taxes which is my next project.

Spring-cleaning and decluttering go hand in hand, and with warmer weather around the corner (we promise, New England, it will come) you might be planning for the day you can tackle a massive purge. But did you know that there's a wrong way to declutter?

“People often fail at organizing because they follow common myths about organizing,” explains Kristen Fisher, owner of Imagine Home Organization in Tampa Bay, FL.

Here, home organizing experts dispel some of these common myths and explain how to actually maintain a decluttered space for good.
Myth No. 1: You can start anywhere
Truth: OK, so the first step to decluttering is just starting already. And kudos to you for wanting to jump in. But if you jump in without a plan, you're setting yourself up to be overwhelmed—and, ultimately, for failure, explains Colleen Branch, a home organization expert and writer for experthometips.com.

“You need to have a solid plan in place to tackle your home,” she says.

We're not talking about a Google Slides presentation here. But before you start, you should write out a simple checklist of what you hope to accomplish.

“It’s satisfying and also allows you to have an end in sight,” Branch notes.

Your checklist doesn't have to be exhaustive; in fact, it should be fairly brief so that it's manageable. Focus on one room at a time, and create checklists for each. For instance, this is Branch's three-step kitchen decluttering list:
Clear out utensils
Check herb/spice rack for out-of-date jars
Remove mismatched glassware

Totally doable, right?

Myth No 2: You should keep only things that 'spark joy'
Truth: In the era of Marie Kondo minimalism, it's easy to see why we've fallen into this mindset. But Laura Kinsella, owner of Urban OrgaNYze in New York City, recommends we shift our thinking on this point.

"Let's be clear: My diaper pail does not spark joy, but it's an essential item that is used every day in my home," she says.

Declutter with this thought in mind, she says: Is this item beautiful in my home or does it prove to be useful? If the answer is "no," then it's probably time for it to go.

Myth No. 3: Making quick decisions is the best way to declutter
Truth: If you're anything like us, the longer you ruminate on an item, the less likely you are to let it go. For this reason, decluttering experts often suggest that you make a quick decision about an item, toss it in the donation box, and move on.

But while reflex decisions certainly can help with clearing out your space quickly, they can also foster regret. (Take it from someone who mistakenly donated a family heirloom to Goodwill.)

If you're not sure whether you truly want to toss something, Branch recommends this: Put it in a box, tape it shut, and write the date—one year from now—on the outside. If you haven't opened the box in a year, you know it's time to discard the item.

"There's a high chance you won't even remember what was in the box," she says.

Just make sure that everything isn't going in this box of purgatory. If it is, then it's time for some tough love with your decluttering efforts.

Myth No. 4: Before you can declutter, you need organizing supplies
Truth: "Buying cute containers may help motivate us into getting organized, but it won’t create the right system," Fisher cautions.

Containers are great for storing stuff, but the point of decluttering is to have less stuff to store. So start by taking stock of the situation. Then sort and purge. And purge again.

For instance, take everything out of your clothes closet, put similar items together, and then figure out what you have way too many of. If it's shirts, break it down further: Do you have too many T-shirts? Too many black T-shirts? Too many black Nickelback T-shirts? (Uh-oh.) Once you've sorted them into microcategories, review all items and determine what you don’t like, don’t need, or don’t really have room to keep.

Only then should you start to think about how to best store what you're keeping.

Myth No. 5: Decluttering is only for Type A people
Truth: Sorry to break it to you, folks, but anyone can—and should—declutter.

"Whether organizing comes naturally to you or not, no one is exempt from decluttering," Kinsella says. "We all need to continually assess our belongings as we evolve and change over time."

"Decluttering is designed for anyone who wishes to gain more clarity and control over their home and their life," she adds.

And don't we all want that?

Myth No. 6: You can declutter an entire house in a weekend
Truth: Raise your hand if you've ever tried to dedicate a day or weekend to decluttering. (Guilty.)

While it's an admirable goal, it's simply not realistic. Slow and steady wins the race here.

"Unless you're the Energizer bunny, trying to tackle your entire property in one day will result in burnout, frustration, and defeat," Kinsella says.

Instead, set small milestones that you work toward throughout the week or month: Vow to focus only on the junk drawer or only on the front closet, and not to move on until one is cleared. (Some experts even recommend decluttering in 20-minute spurts to prevent burnout; others recommend working from one corner of a room to another to keep focus.)

After enough small victories, you'll see real progress throughout your house.

"Small successes always lead to greater achievements, which will leave you feeling gratified and motivated to continue," Kinsella explains.

Myth No. 7: Decluttering once or twice a year is enough
Truth: When you lose weight, you have to work at keeping the pounds off. The same is true for decluttering: Without regular maintenance, all that junk will just come pouring back into your home.

Maintenance? Gross, we know. But don't get discouraged—it doesn’t have to take up a ton of your time and, dare we say, it'll be easier than going to the gym.

Every week, make a plan to return items to their designated storage place and to dispose of things that aren’t needed.

“Just 10 minutes a week will keep you from having to spend an afternoon when things pile up,” Fisher swears.

Finally, avoid clutter from building up by not bringing it into your home in the first place. Open the mail directly over the recycling bin, Fisher recommends, and think twice before you buy something new.

Dropped off a big black garbage bag of clothes and a box of household goods at the Goodwill in GTF. The rescue mission thrift was closed to the goodwill got it instead. 2 more bags went to the senior center for their upcoming rummage sale.

My vet is having a feral cat spay/neuter clinic in April and has put out the call for towels to wrap the kitties in. I dug out some at our house but I keep a bunch for my own dogs and their baths and to dry them off when they come inside. But I got a whole big black garbage bag today at a house where I do occasional home health aid work.

Also brought in 2 little dog kennels from the rafters in the garage and will clean them up and get them to the vet's office as well. The dogs that used them have been buried at least 10 years and the dogs I have now are too big for these kennels. I got my monies worth when my old pair of bichons flew all over the country with me!! Time to go bless someone else.
