I tried falafels and they are really quite good
Falafels are ground chickpeas and a bunch of other herbs. Bake them to avoid the oil in frying, although frying is probably the right way to make them.

Best - Asparagus Tart
pre-made pastry dough with a thin veneer of Dijon mustard, Havarti slices on top of that, and this asparagus spears on top of that. Hmm. Think I know what we're having today.

Worst - licorice

I find it works to sprinkle it in your cup before adding coffee. Alternatively, it can be added in with the coffee in the filter before brewing.

Best food discovery: Oats Overnight (the brand) I love them. They're a perfect breakfast for me.

Worst food discovery: How much olive oil adds up in calories. I love cooking with olive oil, and I never thought about it before I started logging everything. Now I am a lot more careful with it.

Worst food discovery: That carbs were the cause of my cravings, and I can no longer have macaroni & cheese. Also, many of the carby foods I thought were healthy, added up calories very quickly.

Best food discovery: Meat, eggs, and vegetables have very few calories in them, so I can have more volume of food, as my base, and then add fats to them, to get enough calories. I always thought of them as high calorie foods, but there is no way I could eat as little calories, if I was eating more carbs.

Best: New baked egg recipe - spinach in greased baking dish with raw whole egg on top, put a little cheese, salsa, salt & pepper on top and bake to your desired doneness, (18 minutes at 350 deg). My new favorite way to eat eggs and reheat great in the microwave.

Worst: anything healthy I end up eating too much of.

Best: I enjoy baked Organic Harvest Snaps... for 130 calories I have an ounce of baked pea treats. They have 5 grams of protein and 4 grams of fiber. No saturated or trans fats. Simple ingredients of organic green peas, organic canola oil, organic rice, salt, calcium carbonate and organic rosemary extract...not a health food, but a snack I feel pretty good about!

Worst food discovery: My husband can't have oxalate due to kidney stones (he's had more than 60). That means, among other things, no spinach which is one of my favorites! I also grew up on rhubarb and that is also a no-no. Not a good discovery, for sure!

Becoming the healthiest me that I can be.

@KILLYSMOM - love easy switches to get enough fiber!

I like the high-fiber oatmeal packets (esp. maple brown sugar), combined with some almond butter for a quick snack that can help push my total daily fiber up where I'd like it - 10g of fiber per packet!

Ha! I read this title thinking it was tasty vs. non-tasty. :-)

For me:

Best discovery: sunchokes! Roasted they taste very, very similar to potatoes, but the nutritional profile is so much better (higher fiber, lower carbs, etc.)

Worst discovery: Turnips. Blah. I love almost all veggies, and just canNOT get onboard with mashed turnips. Roasted, they're ok, but boiled or mashed - nope. Just watery tastelessness.

Take life one day at a time - enjoy today before you worry about tomorrow.

Best: Fiber One breads and English Muffins. I was finding it difficult to get enough fiber each day. Switching from my traditional store brand whole wheat to Fiber One has made a big difference.

Worst: Low fat and/or sugar free snacks. I finally started reading the labels -- the fat and sugar reductions do not always equal a reduction in carbs or calories!

Life's an adventure!

a few bests:
costco frozen cherries - they make great smoothies.
Quinoa instead of potatoes or rice (always looking to add protein since I am vegetarian),
Overnight oats or quinoa pudding!! They are a great way to start the day healthy, and it really works for me to put them in the fridge the night before so they are just there in the morning -- ready to go and reminding me to start the day right.

worst:
Don't even bother trying anything with nutritional yeast. Yuck!

Best: I love spiralled butternut squash (squoodles) and use them to replace pasta. I eat it with marinara or with stir-fried vegetables and scrambled eggs for a lo-mein substitute. I also use it as the base of a taco bowl and add guacamole, salsa, ground turkey, and greek yoghurt.

Worst: Most disappointing is when I discovered how small a serving of cereal really is! I also hate most iterations of kale and wish I liked it because it has so many health benefits. I also wished I like quinoa more :/

Best recent: I have a bit of a peanut butter addiction, and recently discovered powdered peanut butter (PB2). Only ingredients are peanut butter, sugar and salt. Fat removed, just add water. Not quite the same thing as my favorite organic peanut butter, but close enough to make me happy. It is especially good in my morning slushies with protein powder and whatever veggie and fruits I have on hand.

Worst: I refuse to drink diet drinks. All that artificial sweetener is not healthy. Prefer water and tea.

I have found that if you want a sandwich on a roll cut out the middle of the roll.
Get a sharp bread knife--you have to cut from the top and the bottom of the roll--It does take practice. And it does save about an ounce. maybe more.

I discovered air fried radishes! They're SO convenient for when I want something like fries but don't have the calories to spare. I was very happy to find that they're less than 100 calories a serving.

As for the worst food discovery, as a lot of people are saying, it's disappointing to realize how many calories just the bread of a sandwich contributes, especially if we're talking something like a ciabatta roll or baguette style sandwich roll. Making any sandwich open-faced helps. And I'm finding that I prefer a higher filling-to-bread ratio anyways.

I find there are a few recipes for squash and even sweet potatoes that are way too sweet. In my opinion, they are sweet enough already. I like these baked or steamed until they're soft, but not mushy. Nothing added while cooking, and after maybe a small bit of butter, salt and pepper as desired. Recently I started to reduce sodium, and I'm finding foods taste great without the added salt, too.

I found another recent Worst Food: butternut squash roasted with maple syrup (100% real of course). The recipe said to roast for 30 minutes so it turned out mushy and the syrup made it too sweet.

Trader Joe's Green Goddess salad dressing. Wow, is this great and only 10 calories a tablespoon. I found a few copycat recipes on line (easy because the ingredient list is whole foods you can buy in any grocery store). Make in food processor and thin with water to the consistency you like. Ingredient list from the back of the bottle:

Water
avocado
cider vinegar
green onion
lemon juice
chives
parsley
olive oil
yellow onion
basil
garlic
sea salt
pepper

Organic brown rice rollers and avocado on a bagel thin. I also like using most of the recipes on Spark. Makes logging easier.

Best food discovery: For all the "breaddies": Try Nature's Own Sugar-Free Life 100% Whole Wheat.

Only 9 carbs, 4 protein, 1 fiber, NO sugar, and NO saturated fat per slice. I swear you will not miss the sugar. This IS real bread.

Another best food: Potato sliced into circles...spray foil w/non-stick butter spray or olive oil spray & place potato circles on foil...spray w/spray. Place in oven (I use my toaster-oven). Bake til browned or desired crispness. Do not cut too thin...not meant to be like potato chips. I don't even season mine. BTW...small, unpeeled white potatoes work the best.

Best Foods: Plain Nonfat Greek Yogurt...Balsamic vinegar...Goat Cheese...Nonfat Sour Cream. I like Balsamic vinegar on salads & add Lite Balsamic Salad dressing to it. The vinegar is good for you & it stretches the dressing. If I am making a shrimp salad or chicken salad sandwich, I use 1/2 nonfat sour cream & 1/2 lite mayonnaise. I always add green onions & celery to stretch it & give it crunch. I like crumbled up Goat Cheese on salads. It has far less sodium than Feta cheese.

Best food discovery— 11 whole hazelnuts are just under 100 calories. And Brussels sprouts sautéed in 1 tsp. garlic butter are fantastic.

Worst food discovery— years ago, finding out that 1 package of ramen noodles = 400+ calories. I used to really like those.

Oh, yeah — the other best food discovery was a few years ago when I learned about bento boxes.

Note: homemade mayonnaise = egg + olive oil + drizzle of lemon juice. Tastes better than the commercial ones by far.

Best and worst: OK, Spark. What am I eating today? Like many, I love to eat and I love to cook and find new recipes. When I use the menu as a guide I am full all day (more veges).

Loves - avocado, raw' roasted veges/squash and brussel sprouts in bacon.
Love to eat but leave in fridge until they are only fit for chickens - fresh green beans.

Cinnamon with black coffee. Sounds crazy but a big win! Cinnamon is a huge power food with tons of health advantages. I try to get in 1 teaspoon per day while doing intermittent fasting to melt away stubborn stomach fat. Hope this helps. I love the support at this site and am looking forward to a healthy lifestyle!

I also found a pretty cool fat burning tea.

It's interesting because, once the bananas are frozen and blended, they lose their strong banana flavor and become a a vehicle for whatever flavor you add.

Love this topic!

Although ice cream is not one of my vices, every once in a while, I do crave it a bit. My best food discovery - frozen bananas blended with a bit of coffee extract is totally satisfying and tastes remarkably like coffee ice cream, my favorite.

My worst food discovery - watermelon has calories that do add up. I can easily eat half a watermelon in one day. It's the reason I have to limit what I buy at one time - because what I buy is what I eat that same day. emoticon

@DAD_AINT_HIP Bread is one of my downfalls, for sure! When my nutritionist told me to cut it way back on bread, his solution, for say a ham sandwich, was to eliminate the bread. So what is that? Ham. lol I have found that I can cut back on the calories by either using a thin-sliced bread which can be anywhere from 50 - 80 calories, cutting my own thin slices from a whole loaf (takes a good sharp bread knife) or having an open-faced sandwich. Don't know if this is of any help to you, but I have not yet advanced the point, as you have, with being satisfied by lettuce wrap.

Best discovery was when a nutritionist told me not to drink fruit juice to lose weight. I was glad to give it up! I only switched because I thought it was better than coke.

Ok - real best discovery is that sandwiches without mayo are not so bad on calories (mayo is not a fit for human consumption!).

Worst discovery is that I have to track for the rest of my life. I cannot be trusted to eat intuitively ha ha. I know what I should and should not eat, but if I do not track it... bad choices happen.

Best - that restaurants will add a protein topper (chicken, fish, prawns) to a salad, so that means veggies and protein and no carbs for those of us who like to low carb

Worst - finding out that fruit juices, even the 100% pure ones without added sugar, are pretty much sugar bombs. I thought fruit juices were healthier than pop, they are only slightly healthier and they have too much sugar. A glass of juice takes many pieces of fruit, you wouldn't eat 5 apples at a time, a glass of juice takes about 5 apples to make plus juice instead of apples means you don't get the fiber.

Best food discovery: that when I choose to eat ice cream I am actually satisfied with 1/4-1/2 cup! (It also helps to serve that portion in a small dish!) Oh, and using monk fruit as an alternate to white sugar. I'll be sharing that info in my 5-Day Sugar Reset challenge next month.

Worst food discovery: Brussel Sprouts!!!!! And no, I don't care what how you prepare them, I still hate them.

best food discovery was that squeezing a lemon or lime over salad as dressing gave my salad a fresh light taste and allowed each item in the salad to taste too... you can actually taste the tomato, avocado, onion, peas, etc individually and they are not clouded out by the dresing and an added plus is the lemon or lime juice does not add calories to the salad

Best: it's a tie between raw bok choi in salads (super sweet) and raw parsnips blended in smoothies. They are also super sweet and, unlike carrots, blend to a perfectly smooth consistency in my high speed blender. I was 48 years old before I knew one could eat bok choi raw!!

Worst: rutabagas followed closely by kohlrabi. And eggplant. Cannot stand them. But that's pretty much the entire list of veggies I can't stand. I really like all the rest.

Best food discovery: That healthy good carbs provide provide energy plus vitamins, minerals and fiber and should be half of my plate (supplemented by vegetables and legumes).

Worst food discovery: Well, I knew saturated fat was bad for my arteries and heart, but that oils are processed foods devoid of the nutrients in their original form and are just as bad. "The fat you eat is the fat you wear" is what I learned from Dr. McDougall and others. No strokes for me!

Best Food Discovery: How much food you can eat when focusing on making smart food choices most of the time. If I am eating a lot of fruits, vegetables, lean protein, and healthy fats, my macronutrients and micronutrients fall into place and I feel so good.

Worst Food Discovery: Sweet potatoes/Yams are still nasty in most instance in my opinion. If I want to treat myself to fries, I want some from a plain old potato; my Irish heritage demands it...lol.

BEST FOOD DISCOVERY: Like spaghetti squash, zoodles (noodles made with zucchini) are a fabulous alternative to pasta. I seriously don't miss the so-called "real thing" at all. I agree with the previous post: the crunch is wonderful and the zoodles are delicious!

WORST FOOD DISCOVERY: measuring spoons, LOL. I had no idea, for example, how much cream I was putting in my coffee. Measuring my cream as I add it has been a sad but eye-opening experience.

Worst discovery:
Many granola bars, especially the chewy ones, are loaded with corn syrup or sugar plus fat and calories (trail mix is better, in small amounts.) Replacing real meals with those all day in an effort to be "healthy" was a huge mistake!

Best discovery:
SMOKED JACKFRUIT! I just tried it for the first time yesterday. It's a kind of fruit, but it tastes and feels a whole lot like meat. Unbelievable. Satisfying, too, but without the high calories, sugar, saturated fat, or cholesterol! 6 grams of fiber, plus protein, calcium, and only 90 calories per serving. (The sodium is 310 mg, 13% DV, so that would be a consideration for anyone strictly limiting sodium.)

WORST food discovery - a medium sized pumpkin muffin has 600+ calories. Before I started my quest for a healthy lifestyle, I would typically eat a muffin as a mid morning or afternoon snack. Some times I would eat a huge slice of coffee cake or scone. Those clocked in at 800-1000 calories each. I had no idea baked goods were so high in calorie. No wonder I was morbidly obese.

BEST food discovery - Siggi's Icelandic Skyr, love the madagascar vanilla and cinnamon flavor. only 110 calories and 9 grams of sugar.

My "worst" discovery was not only that food and drink contain calories, but that they actually do apply to me emoticon

Honestly, my "worst" realization was just how many calories I was "wasting" every day on foods that I didn't particularly care for, but was eating purely because they were part of "normal" meals served among my clan. I've never been a big fan of potatoes or rice or pasta (they are okay, but not something I would ever go out of my way for), and was appalled at just how many calories of them I was consuming purely because our "normal" meals had always contained a starch.

My "best" discovery was that roasting vegetables makes everything - even old favourites - even better. All it takes is a tsp or so of olive oil, a sprinkle of coarse salt, and some oven (or grill) time, and the result is almost guaranteed to be something that I'll love. Even vegetables that I had grown up seriously disliking have ended up as favourites when I roast them.

Sir Terry Pratchett: "Science is not about building a body of known 'facts'. It is a method for asking awkward questions and subjecting them to a reality-check, thus avoiding the human tendency to believe whatever makes us feel good."

I’m curious…

What was everyone’s best and worst food discovery?

My worst (or at least one of them) was sandwiches. With two slices of bread at 110 calories per slice, even a healthy sandwich will be at least 400 calories. And that’s without the stuff that can make it yummy (like a good cheese, or light mayo, etc). I’ve learned to tolerate lettuce wraps. lol

Best discovery? Zoodles! I love zucchini anyway but the noodles hold up well to a quick sauté, takes a minute to send two of them through a spiralizer, and only 44 calories per cup, you can get a huge helping of veggies.
