Looks like the crop is small in California this year, and tariff talks helped jump up prices.

Now that things are...changing? Maybe the avocado prices will drop again.

Up until a year ago, I never really ate avocados. maybe some guac now and then. Recently, I started adding a half to my salads and really love it. Even made avocado toast. how trendy is that ? LOL

Well, I'm curious what people think of the recent price increases ? When I first started buying avocados, I could go to Trader Joe's and get a mid size one for $.99 and a bag of minis for $2.99. Just this past weekend, the mid size was $1.79 and the bag of minis $4.49. My regular supermarket sells a single avocado for over $2 each.

How much are you paying for avocados ?

Here's a recipe for avocado mousse from Chocolate Covered Katie (link below)

Ingredients
flesh of 2 ripe avocados (240g)
1/4 cup regular cocoa powder
1/4 cup dutch cocoa OR melted chocolate chips
3-4 tbsp almond milk or other plant milk
1/2 tsp pure vanilla extract
1/8 tsp salt
sweetener of choice to taste (I like 1/4 cup pure maple syrup)

Combine all ingredients in a blender or food processor until completely smooth.
If not using a liquid sweetener then add a little extra plant milk for a smoother consistency.

I love avocados. I'll eat them directly out of their peel/shell. :) My youngest son enjoys them as well, which is nice. They go so great on so many things.

I love avocado toast but I’ve been making omelettes with them lately - nutritional yeast and everything seasoning and I’m in heaven!

My favourite way to eat avocado is sliced thin on thinly sliced whole grain toast with a fried egg on top.

It's actually not that uncommon an allergy, it's that it wasn't known as well because avocados weren't universal, as they are now. I seriously absolutely cannot stand the taste, so I think it's my body telling me not to eat. haha! There are other really healthy foods I can eat that are not as costly - as up here, avocados are very expensive. Good you do enjoy them and it's helped with your weight loss. emoticon

I've been going to a weight management physician, board certified internist who's also board certified in weight management, gone to the best med schools in Europe and the US, who is a big proponent of avocados for their health benefits and aid in weight loss. It's a shame that you are allergic to them. I thought he was joking at first when he said I could have a half to a whole one a day---thought that there were too many calories in them. He said that they were beneficial calories and fat. I'll be darned that when I started eating them, I got off my darned plateau and started losing the weight. I think that they're starting to add avocado slices to sandwiches because they're so darned tasty and healthy. And odds are that you have an unusual allergy. It's a shame that you have this allergy.

I tasted avocado once, a little 1/4 tsp and spat it out. I hated the taste. Within a very short time I was in the middle of a serious allergy reaction. For decades I've been able to avoid avocado by reading make-up and hair care labels, knowing it's not something that is common in the north (too expensive and usually arrives soft, mushy, not too tasty). Now with it becoming a fad its everywhere. Our workplace has a client who runs a Friday lunch business, so we get great lunches for $5. One lunch it was BLT sandwich and fruit salad. I walked in and said, "Wow, no." They were adding avocado slices to all the sandwiches. Who would have thought I'd have to state "I'm deadly allergic to avocado" on a BLT!!! They finished up, then cleaned up, and made my sandwich without any cross contamination. But seriously, who knew! Apparently it's the latest craze to add fresh avocado slices to all sandwiches. Just no!

This afternoon's lunch:

2 Siete Cassava Flour Tortillas*
1 avocado
1/4 C grated carrot
2 tbsp. diced red onion
2 tbsp. wildbrine raw organic kraut
2 large strawberries
10 g Belgian dark chocolate 72%

*It is nice to have a grain free alternative for those of us with grain intolerances
sietefoods.com/collections/tortillas

They are pricey. $55.00 for 6 packages online which is roughly $9.17 per pack. I scored them for $5.99 a pack at Whole Foods this weekend.

I am a fan of Trader Joe's Teeny Tiny avocados. Yes, there's been a spike in price, but they are comparatively lower in price than the larger ones. I love them.

Neither of our major supermarkets have Avocado in at the moment. The fact that in some places in NZ they are $10 EACH (about US$6.50) might have something to do with it!

I love avocados but not cooked. I tried fried avocado fries a while ago and I was not a fan. But any other prep I love.

I am in Ohio and they have been $1 here for a few weeks. The bag of 4 is about $4-$5 all the time. It's crazy to see the different prices of them in different areas.

We are in California and the cost is definitely up! And, yes, many of our avocados are sourced from Mexico.

$8.99 for a bag of 5 avocados at Costco
$1.69 per avocado at Trader Joe's

I have read different websites that say avocados have between 8-12 total carbs, and most of that counts as fiber so the "Net-carbs" that most people worry about are very low. I still love them on my salads and mixed with tuna fish and made into guacamole. I still want to try baking avocado halves with an egg in the middle.

I did read in the paper a couple months ago that it is possible that we might get Avocado from Mexico. A house next door used to have 2 avocado trees - the dipstick who shifted in cut them down and planted olive trees and they got uprooted by a real bad storm. Olive Trees don't have much of a root support system and given that our land is all peat, there was nothing to hold them in place.

I checked the rate of exchange for the New Zealand dollar.

$5 NZ = $3.34 US

$9 NZ = $6 US

I can not even tell you how expensive guacamole would be at those prices. LOL

I'm not sure. but I believe most of the avocados we eat in the US come over the border from Mexico. Don't think California grows enough to supply the demand due to the increased popularity of KETO.

New Zealand doesn't generally import avocado so we aren't affected by 'border threats' however I wish ours were the prices that you guys pay. Ours have been around $5 EACH for a while, and today was $5.50. They have been up to $9 each. Needless to say, at that price I can't afford them. I usually buy them around the $2 each mark.

I love Avocados. I am on the east coast USA and they usually sell for 99 cents to a $1.00 each but this week they have risen to $2.00 each!
With breakfast I eat a half smashed up with a squirt of Sriracha hot sauce. Love it!

I buy avocados at walmart or Sprouts or Kroger. I actually just get the small ones since they are high in cals and fat, I pay between 50 cents and 75 cents each.

You can count me as a recent AA - avocado aficionado. I love slicing up an avocado in my salads.

I have a question for all you avocado eaters. What are you paying per avocado ? Have you noticed a spike in prices since the threat to shut the border ?

two weeks ago, I went to Trader Joe's an a medium avocado was $.99. that's what they usually are. A week later, same avocado was $1.29. On Sunday, the price had jumped to $1.69. My local supermarket is selling them for $2 each.

The Trader Joe's bag of six mini avocados spiked in price too.

What are you paying for avocados ?

I LOVE avocados! Usually, I buy prepared guacamole from the produce section because it is easier (no prep), keeps longer in the fridge, and I don't have to worry about having a ripe avocado.

I spread it on half an English muffin and top it with a poached egg. I spread it on slices of turkey breast and roll up a cheese stick inside for lunch. I use it to top fat-free refried beans and sprinkle with some cheese and salsa. The rare times I eat a sandwich (I don't eat much bread) I used it instead of mayo. Then, of course, fresh avocado slices are wonderful on a salad.

Love me some avocado, and it's healthy fat!

It is not unusual for us (hubby & I) to eat a couple of avocados a day between the 2 of us. I use them in smoothies and top egg & veggie scrambles with them. I have grain allergies/sensitivities/intolerances. So, no avocado toast for me.

However, I have found some grain-free tortillas that my body will tolerate by Siete. So, occasionally, I'll eat the avocado with a tortilla and some pressure-cooked pinto beans. Legumes are a dicey proposition for my body too.

Glad you've found the avocados and like them. They have so many healthy things going for them!

@IMREITE - if you cut and store them properly, they should last up to a week in the fridge. You can also MASH and freeze it, so it is ready for guacamole or as a spread or added to a smoothie

My husband came home from the grocery store the other day with two bags full of avocados. He had heard they were good for him, so he stocked up. They've been keeping pretty well in the fridge, I'm surprised. I will admit we tried the avocado toast (and just about everything else avocado) and it is more delicious than words...

Aside from all the great avocado uses below, I have a few more: you can use it as a base for egg/chicken/potato salad instead of mayo or with greek yogurt, you can use it as an ice cream base or in smoothies- i do like to use stronger flavors with it, and it makes a great base for all kinds of dips- add it to your spinach dip in place of mayo, mix in some ranch seasonings for a yummy sandwich spread or veggie dip, we also like to mix it into cream cheese for savory bagels topped with fresh veggies! oh, and one of my personal faves for the summer- avocado + mango + jicama + bell pepper + a little honey & lime juice.

Healthy choices and actions have positive impacts, even if the scale doesn't move!

@CJYOUNG74 - To test if an avocado is ripe, just very gently press at the tip where the stalk goes. If it gives a little, it is ready. If the whole fruit seems soft (don't 'squeeze it re easily bruised) then unless you are going to eat it immediately, I wouldn't get it.

@ENGINEERMOM - I don't use a recipe, but I make a couple large trays of pizza (not a conventional looking one but sure tastes like one LOL!)

Doing it like that I can get a lot more cooked at one time because I cut and freeze them.

I use gluten free flours because my son-in-law has Celiac Disease so I use a mix of Buckwheat Flour, Chick Pea Flour and Brown Rice Flour, Savoury Yeast and a tiny bit of baking powder. For pizza of that size I use a whole medium to large avocado and some Parmesan and a LITTLE bit of Rice Bran Oil.I often put chopped parsley into the base mix, too. Water and milk is added to make the right texture. It looks funny because it has a greenish hew. The 'sauce' is heaps of veges ... canned tomato, carrots, celery, Swiss chard, onion, mushroom and capsicum, and sometimes some red lentils or cannellini beans, too. When it has cooked I add dried basil and fresh garlic and tomato paste to it and blitz it with a wizz stick. Then I spread it thickly over the base, and add a mix of heaps of chopped onion, mushrooms, Swiss Chard, capsicum which has had reduced fat grated Tasty cheese and Parmesan mixed in to it. I always mix them together to set the veges in place because there are so many LOL!

Avocado toast is a breakfast standard for vegans and I love that the rest of the world is Jumping on the trend!

I knew about avocado mousse, but not about the frosting. Can't wait to try it!

I, too, have a new found love of avocado but really only like it mashed and mostly as guac. I like some of these ideas! I need to buy one and try again as my first attempt to make homemade guac was a fail when I struggled with the avocado itself. Turns out it wasn't ripe (I had no idea lol).

I love putting an egg on some ( sugar free Bread) then doing a sunny side egg right on top, with some fruit on the side, works out to be a full meal for me

Ill slice up half into all salads, I use it sandwiches and wraps in place of mayo, I have mixed tuna up with it too

Try them as a substitute for cheese and sour cream on chili!

Mash with a little salt, lime juice, onion, and tomato (mix tomato in after mashing) for homemade guac as a substitute for cheese and sour cream on tacos or nachos!

I also love them mixed with lime juice and hot sauce as a salad dressing.

And did you know you can even make a vegan chocolate frosting or pudding by mashing with maple syrup and cocoa powder?

They are magic! High in fiber and healthy fats, and tasty.

I have the best luck buying them green so they don't get bruised on the way home, then ripening on the counter in a closed paper bag with an apple (the apple gives off a gas that helps the ripening process). Once ripe, they'll keep in the fridge for quite a few days, so I usually buy 3-6 every Saturday, then have a continuous supply of perfectly ripe, unbruised avocados.

I am 46 and NEVER ate a plain avocado until a few weeks ago. My kids like them and asked me to buy some. They split a big one so for the heck of it I put it in a baggie and took it to work so it wouldn't get wasted.

OMG. Now I am addicted. I limit myself to either a 1/2 or a small 1 per day because of the high cal, but with a little salt and pepper plain, or on whole grain toast?? OMG. I could literally eat 10 slices of toast with avocado on them.

I had a 1/2 of a small one on a 1/2 piece of toast with my protein shake this morning and took the other half of each to work for me as my mid morning snack.

My God I cant get enough now!! Oh Avocado where have you been all my life?
