I'll often forget when I'm not with my family, unless and until I get hungry. But I do eat meals with my husband and sons (especially dinners) because I think that family time is important, and because I think it is important to model good nutrition and table manners for my kids.

Starting Weight: 268 lbs. (November 2010)
Quasi-Maintenance: 165 lbs. (June 2011)
Goal Weight: 150 lbs. (reached December 8, 2011)

Size 22W to Size 4

Currently maintaining within 5 lbs. (+ or -) of goal. I weigh daily, but also use a tape measure and the fit of my clothes to guage how well I'm doing.

I've been sick a lot with very bad vomiting migraines. My stomach has shrunk so I can't eat much and I rarely get hungry. I try to remember to eat but now I just basically try to eat every 4-6 hours.

I eat when I am hungry and actually have time to eat, which isn't very often during the workday. (I'll almost always be hungry, but I won't very often have time.) Otherwise, I just have to wait until I get home.

I would love to say that I eat when I am hungry. But that is only true so often. I very often eat because of the time. Sometimes at dinner I find myself saying (like my mom often said) let's eat and get it over with. I am blessed that I seldom eat after dinner.

On my way to my new normal.

I try not to eat unless I am truly hungry. There is a balance between eating when hungry and waiting until I am starving though. Unfortunately, the starving scenario happens more times than I care to admit. I do eat frequently throughout the day with small snacks and meals. I probably eat every 2-3 hours or so.

I'm guessing that we humans generally eat at traditional times (breakfast, lunch, dinner) because that's when human beings are most hungry. Makes sense to me. Also, it's reassuring to know that at X time, I will be able to enjoy a meal. Helps me stay on track.

Eliminate "I will try". Replace with "I will".
You are now ready to succeed.
Let's go.

I don't like the feeling of being somewhat lightheaded and my queasy, achy stomach when I am truly hungry.... So, I eat fairly regularly throughout the day...about every three hours either a meal or good quality snack!

Yes mostly. I eat breakfast same time everyday because of work. I have a set lunch break time and because of that I tend to be hungry for dinner about the same time every day. I work in a school and dont find time to eat other than during our specified lunch break time.

I used to but not anymore. I do eat breakfast about an hour to two hours after getting up. However, that is my only set time for eating. I plan my entire day’s meals and snacks but, after breakfast, I eat only when I get hungry.

Sometimes, rarely, I forget.
I try to keep from getting too hungry.
It's funny, to me when my stomach growls. It's a sound that I am not used to hearing.
Eating now, is just more satisfying.

Stronger, more powerful, I got this.

No. I only eat when I am hungry and I eat until I am full. I rarely snack. Also, I pay attention to nutrition when making choices regarding what I eat (daily, monthly, yearly) so I don't have any worries about what I'm not getting. Seems to work best for me--but we're all here to discover what works best for our body type and health conditions, no doubt everyone is going to be different on this topic (and so many others).

I've been working at eating on my body cues, but this week it's not working .. however on the normal basis ... I have been coming along great .. but Im also in a desk now where I don't see my coworker get up and go to lunch, or don't see her munching .. so I think that has alot to with it as well ...

Yes! Childhood patterns are hard to change. I look at the clock to see if its time to eat instead of looking within to see if I'm really hungry or just thirsty. Its an daily struggle for sure.

I eat usually at somewhat regular times even if not that hungry. But instead of a certain time I use a 2 hr window. so lunch is some where between 11 and 1. dinner between 5 and 7. since retired and at home most of the time, I can eat when I want. I have 2 teenage sons and once they are gone I might try to only eat when hungry

I tried eating regular planned meals whether I was hungry or not. I didn't lose any weight. I'm now trying to eat only when I'm hungry and stop before I'm full. It makes me nervous when the clock says 12:00 but I'm not hungry yet. It's a work in progress but I am starting to lose weight this way. Most days I skip lunch because I'm not hungry and eat an early dinner because I get hungry around 5:00. I usually don't crave a snack after dinner anymore.

Yes, that is how I stay on track. When you eat at the same times everyday your body knows when it's time to be hungry. Most people eat say within the hour of the time they get up in the morning, at their noon break for lunch and between 5 and 6 in the evening for their dinner. Some people also require a snack depending on how long they have to wait between meals say if the eat their lunch at noon and then eat their dinner at 6 sometimes they need a small snack about 3. That's how I do it anyway.

I work a 9-5 job, so my meals are pretty much at the same time every weekday. My hunger cues were all messed up from working 3rd shift for 2 years, but now that I'm eating around the same time every day, my body seems to get hungry around those times. I think you can "reset" your hunger cues by trying to eat at the same times every day.

Taz_nut35, what actual problem do you have? You mention being afraid of over eating, but not actually overeating. You have to figure out what problem you are actually experiencing and then work on it. Great advice to fix a problem isn't much good to you if you don't have that problem.
Intuitive eating is great -if it works for you. For some people who suddenly become overweight because of a specific incident a short time ago, it often works very well. For people who have struggled with their weight their whole lives, well sometimes intuitive eating can mean eating 4000 cals a day when you only burn 2000 cals a day.
If you are tracking your food and watching closely, how do you feel around meal times? Are you ready to eat at your meal time? Are you trying to choke down what seems like a huge amount of food? How do you determine when to eat now? If you push back your times by twenty minutes, what happens? Does your schedule have the flexibility to accommodate drastic changes in meal times? If you teach third grade you can't just pull out a sandwich in the middle of your history lesson. Look at why you eat when you eat and see if it makes sense to change those times.

-google first. ask questions later.

I do because I am usually hungry at those times. That's why those times are chosen by me.

If I wait till I am actually hungry, I will end of overeating. I can almost guarantee it. When I eat at a specific time, it is easier for me to push food away, as well.

Now that I'm retired and don't really have to adhere to a schedule, I pretty much eat when I'm hungry, not because it's time. Sometimes a "meal" will amount to a series of healthy snacks rather than an actual prepared meal. And some days I have only a couple real meals. It works for me...

If I'm not hungry, I try to wait until I'm actually feeling hungry. Otherwise, yes, I pretty much eat at the same times every day during the week. The weekend is kind of wild around here, so I'm usually hungry whenever the food is ready.

Hugs!!

I think eating on a schedule gives me the structure I need. Allowing hunger to get away like a run away freight train will only serve to work against me at the end of the day.

Yes I do. I don't have a big appetite so I eat on schedule try to eat more than I want so I don't lose too fast. I am 10 lbs below my goal and that is enough.

Yes. My nutritionist recommended I set specific times to eat and eat at those times every day to get into a routine of having something healthy at the same time every day, since part of my problem to begin with was eating significantly under goal.

Yes. I'm trying to listen to my body and only eat when I'm hungry and stop when I'm not hungry anymore. The thing is by lunch time I'm starving and eat too much too fast. I'm not hungry for breakfast but everything and everyone says to eat breakfast to be set up for the rest of the day. Dinner is social and family time so most times I don't notice how much I'm eating. It's a constant struggle. I'd like a magic solution :)

No and yes.

Breakfast I eat if I’m hungry for it.

On weekdays I have a lunch break at a specific time. I eat at that time. How much I eat depends on how hungry I am.

I make and eat dinner when I’m hungry for it. How much I eat depends on how hungry I am.

I do, because I'm rarely hungry.
I eat 3 meals a day, nothing in between, in the most convenient times of the day:
breakfast after morning exercise
lunch midday
dinner after getting home from work, before watching TV with husband and going to bed.

Insisting on hunger signals would mean a messed up daily schedule, no thanks!

I haven't felt a craving or hunger, in quite a while( months ). I don't think we are supposed to, especially when we eat 3 times a day. I eat at 7 a.m., 2 p.m., and 9 p.m. every day. I have an alarm set up to remind me.

First of all , hunger isn't happening in 10 hours, that is cravings, and the fact that you have cravings, usually means that you are in withdrawal from something in the food you are eating.. probably sugar.

If you have these cravings, then you probably have a bigger issue with waiting for the next meal, not missing it.. that is when you snack, or have 4th meal.

If you do not, and could go 24-48 hours without eating, then you need to plan a menu, and eat at set times. You need nutrition daily, even if you do not feel hunger, or cravings.

GRAVITY, how thin are you? If you were to "fast" for days with just water your body still has fat to feed off of and your body would let you know when it was ready to eat again. What did your doctor tell you?

I tend to eat on schedule - part of that is from loosing my "hunger" signal from years of ignoring those signals and going hungry for too long. When I am exercising I have to make sure I eat before hand otherwise my appetite will be gone for the day.

I am another who does a mix of both "schedule" and "eat to hunger".

I plan ahead for at least 6 "meals" each day, which will meet all of my nutrient needs, plus room to spare. I do a "check in" with myself based on the clock, and if I am hungry, then I'll eat - if I'm not hungry, then I just carry on. If I'm hungry, I serve myself the planned items and amount, but do another "check in" part way through, take a few minutes, and sometimes will finish and other times I'll decide that I'm satisfied and stop. Whatever is left over is put aside to eat later in the day if I should find myself hungry outside of "clock" timings.

I don't worry about going overboard by getting too hungry if I should skip a planned meal earlier in the day, because I already have a full plan in place. If I am still hungry after eating a full planned meal, then I'll just finish off whatever it was that I skipped earlier in the day. If I am still hungry after that, and I've had a cup of hot tea or hot lemon water and waited at least 30 minutes, then I will either have a part of my next planned meal, or have a serving of a nutrient-rich soup or stew that I know will be satiating and filling.

There are days when I just am not that hungry (like yesterday, when I actually ate about 400 calories less than I had planned), and days when I'm more hungry (usually a couple of days after I've had a huge calorie burn workout such as a long hike), and I find that they pretty much balance each other out. By having the plan in place, I am comfortable with making adjustments knowing that I have my actual nutritional needs covered, and can keep the extra hungry times in check

It really is a personal thing, but I think that having a plan but doing the check-in and allowing yourself the flexibility to adjust based on how you are feeling is a great way to gradually re-learn your own hunger and satiety cues and start being able to trust your body again.

I do prepare meals on a schedule, but I give myself permission not to eat if I'm not hungry, or have a planned "extra" (piece of fruit, etc.) to add to a meal if I still feel hungry after finishing what I'd prepared.

For example, my planned lunch today included an apple. I got to the end of lunch, and decided I wasn't hungry for the apple, that I'd rather eat it when I get off work at 3:30, knowing that I usually need a snack between then and dinner to avoid overeating at dinner, and then feeling uncomfortable.

Sometimes at breakfast (which I eat at work), I'll bring a small smoothie or yogurt as my "extra", or at dinner I'll plan to eat 3 tacos, but only serve myself 2 at first, eat them, and then let them settle for a bit to see if I really am hungry enough for the third (about half the time I'm not, and pass).

Take life one day at a time - enjoy today before you worry about tomorrow.

This is a personal struggle for me. I know for glucose regulation (I'm at high risk for developing diabetes due to genetics and other risk factors (3 babies over 9lbs, PCOS, etc) it is best to eat consistent and in a timely manner. Because I work full time and have 3 kiddos, my lifestyle makes it so that I have to eat on schedule. I have regular break time for breakfast and lunch at work, then the kids want to eat at a pretty set time for dinner.

That said, I honestly feel like I do better when I can use intuitive eating. Occasionally, I feel like I'm forcing myself to eat at times that I wouldn't necessarily choose to. I also tend to snack when able so if I'm not super careful, I end up with too many calories because I'm eating regular meals AND several snacks. If I could have it my way, I would just pick throughout the day and grab whatever sound good when I want to. This past weekend we were snowed in, so meals were more lenient and I lost 3 pounds just from simply "picking" when I felt the hunger urge. I still prepared more regular meals for my family, but I didn't force myself to eat when I wasn't hungry because we had to be somewhere or do something.

Overall, I think it depends on you, your medical history / your body and what works for you.

Yes, with a caveat. I try to keep meal/snack times consistent because it helps regulate my body system. I do, however, eat according to how hungry I am at those times. I do not simply eat a big dinner because it is dinnertime..

I've found over the years that if I wait until I'm hungry to prepare food and eat, I'll often (happily!) eat much more than I should. Once in a while and during maintenance, this isn't a big deal. But for losing weight, it is. To counteract this I've developed a strategy where breakfast and lunch are scheduled, while my two daily snacks and dinner are on a looser, "eat when hungry" schedule. This way I make sure to have a solid foundation to help avoid getting too hungry. (I also find it helps to pre-track for the day, so I don't have to spend time deciding what to eat before preparing it when I'm already hungry.)

as a kid, i hated eating breakfast. HATED. so it was never my habit, because i never felt hungry. eventually my parents made me start to eat breakfast (over loud objections) and then my body got used to it and i started to feel hungry in the am. sometimes it's a matter of training your body to eat at certain times.

i do try to eat at set times (during the work week at least...), but if i'm still feeling quite full i might skip or reduce a portion for a planned snack.

i think a lot of us function a bit differently, though, so you may want to try timing your meals for a few weeks and then evaluate how you're feeling. many people swear by intuitive eating as well.

I think if your hunger cues are off, then you probably should eat when it's time to eat. I think you're right in that you might risk over eating if you waited until you were hungry. In my opinion, undereating is as much of a problem as overeating.

Personally, I have to eat during the work week when it's time to eat. I currently work in a call center and have to take my 15 and 30 minute breaks when they're scheduled. Since I talk with people all day long, I can't eat while working.

I really don't get that hunger feeling but I'm afraid of missing a meal and overeating when I do feel hungry. I read an article on here that listed the reasons people eat and this one was on there. It basically said you should listen to your body and eat when hungry. I track my food and watch my calorie intake very close. I think if I was to follow this advice I would be really low on my nutrition and calorie intake or would overeat and feel miserable after. I wondered what everyone thinks about this topic?
