I don't know if cold weather makes you hungry, but its Summer where I live, and I feel much less hungry than I did a few months ago. I don't know if I'm eating better, or if my body just needs less food due to the temperature, but I'm definately eating less.

Just to confuse you a bit, when I was 19, I lost 15kg... Summer started, and I was hungry all the time. My mum kept buying buttered popcorn, so I ate big bags of it, and I dug through my sisters freezer to eat all her iceblocks. I think I ended up gaining about 5kg.

I guess its not about the hunger, but what you do with it. I would suggest eating more fruit/veggies, and adding protein to each snack/meal. Good luck! :)

I am finding that it sometimes does make a difference for me. Particularly if it is wet and cold. I don't seem to be able to get myself feeling satisfied.
I discovered my best option is a hearty soup.

Doesn't matter to me what the weather is. My hunger level remains the same. Cravings sometime happen due to the boredom of winter but being active takes those away.

I definitely want to eat more in the winter. I think being full/not hungry makes me feel warmer or something. :) In the Summer I can easily go all day without eating because its hard for me to eat when I am hot.

For some reason I get hungrier as fall begins, so I wonder if hunger is based on our body clock trying to store food for the famine of winter.

Control Your Winter Appetite
It's not just your imagination -- winter really can whet your appetite. Here's how to keep it under control.
By Colette Bouchez

From the WebMD Archives

The weather outside is frightful -- but the food is so delightful! If that's the tune that runs through your head from November through March, you're not alone. As temperatures fall, experts say, our winter appetites can spin out of control.
"Studies indicate that we do tend to eat more during the winter months, with the average person gaining at least 1 to 2 pounds -- and those who are already overweight likely to gain a lot more," says Rallie McAllister, MD, author of Healthy Lunchbox: The Working Mom's Guide to Keeping You and Your Kids Trim.
And while a heartier appetite for a few months out of the year may not seem like such a big deal, McAllister says it can be when we end up gaining weight year in and year out.

Ha! My joke is that EVERYTHING makes me hungry. I eat to celebrate, feel better, when I am alone or with friends, when it is hot or cold or the weather is just right, etc. You get the point. I have had to learn that most of the time it isn't hunger and I am just bored or trying to make a decision.

I have seasonal affective disorder. I've just started using light therapy seriously this winter with a sunrise clock and therapeutic light at the end of october. It took about 4 weeks to really kick in and there are still days like this morning when it stays very dark and gloomy that I struggle to stay awake. I finally woke up fully just before noon.

Generally I crave carbohydrates in the winter and graze all day long, but not this year. It's the first winter in five years that I have lost weight not put it on. I'm even happily eating salads.

Also,it doesn't just affect me in winter, in the summer I find it very hard to sleep for more than 5 hours but I'm full of energy.

Yes, because I can't keep warm if I don't eat enough food. And I don't want to eat a salad in winter, as I do in the summer. Winter makes me want meat and cooked veggies (and of course bread or cookies!). Savory and warm.

The cold temps are also in the mid-atlantic region, and I do not want to exercise, either. A walk is OK, but getting into workout clothes, just the act of changing from warm wool sweaters to cool yoga pants, is horrible. So I am also less likely to stay active. Bed and a book, here I come!

I too struggle with water intake, so when that drops, then I do find myself reaching for more snacks.

I'm trying to at least focus on drinking more tea or just warm water with lemon/lime.

It doesn't make me more hungry, but it does make me want to eat different things. For example, I don't eat salads when it's cold outside. Warm vegetable or tomato soup? Definitely! Chicken broth with a bit of sausage and tons of kale? Absolutely! But don't expect me to enjoy something cold on my plate when it's cold outside.

I've also noticed I prefer "heavier" foods more (higher fat content) when it's cold. Can easily keep the calorie count the same, but my diet swings towards being higher fat when the temperature drops. Makes sense, from an evolutionary perspective - fat is more calorie-dense, and therefore better when you're just trying to get in enough calories to stay warm.

Take life one day at a time - enjoy today before you worry about tomorrow.

Yes, cold weather does make me hungry. However, the weather should not be used as an excuse to overeat. If you feel cold, then just change into warmer clothes and/or drink hot tea to warm up. Winter weight gain can be attributed to the holidays (Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year's Eve, Valentine's Day, St. Patrick's Day, and Easter) and lack of outdoor activities. In the winter, try moving your exercise routine indoors.

Observational studies have suggestive evidence that cold and/or stormy weather leads to overeating and obesity, though. A honest study that involved actually weighing people found that the most obese region of the United States is the Upper Midwest. According to a CDC obesity map of the U.S., Hawaii, a tropical state with a year round warm climate, and California, a state with a warm Mediterranean type climate, have comparatively low rates of obesity, and Colorado, the least obese state (based on telephone surveys), has 300 days of sunshine per year and has warm days alternating with the cold days in winter. The average American gains anywhere between 1-10 lbs during each winter season. Overeating in the winter has been identified as a warning sign of winter seasonal affective disorder (aka winter seasonal depression) and while only 1% of the people in Florida have winter seasonal depression, as many as 20% of the citizens in Alaska have winter seasonal depression. According to various online articles, Anchorage (in Alaska) and Binghamton (in upstate New York) are a couple of the most obese cities in the United States. Speaking of the obesity epidemic south of the U.S. border, Mexico City, Mexico is on the Tropic of Cancer, but is situated at very high elevation (7350 feet at the airport, 10,000 feet at some of the hilly terrain spots), so Mexico City has cold winters.

Thanks for showing understanding!

Yes! Sometimes, dramatically so. I often gain weight when it is cold because I become ravenous -- often craving carbs.

Sadly, my metabolism does not really speed up in cold weather. I have hypothyroidism and I just get cold, unable to fully warm up ... and hungry ... but my body is still "running slow.'

I love to have more hot drinks in the cold weather but, no, it doesn't make me more hungry.

I am indoors most of the year round so the temperature is pretty static. Actually I eat too much fresh fruit in the summer, and yes, those calories do add up!

No, the cold weather does not make me hungrier. I love the cold weather foods though (soups, chili, stews)! I love hot tea on a cold day!

I was just wondering this in the last few weeks! I always end up putting on an extra4-5 lbs in the winter. I think it's a combination of the holiday's, less outdoor activities and then my apparent agreement with you that winter seems to make me more hungry! I'm trying to make a conscious effort this year to not eat more - but this week it was a losing battle! Today I start over, because why wait for New Years to start anew?!

Could boredom also be a contributing factor here? During the warmer months you have more outside options, but as it gets colder you're inside more often and run through the regular inside things with more time left over. Would having a ready list of things you want/need to do on the fridge be enough to divert and distract you some of the time?

I think so. I naturally crave more comfort foods when the temp drops. Soup is a great option! Thank you, MARTHA324, for the reminder.

If you spend a lot of time outside, in the cold, your body temperature will drop, and you will shiver. This burns calories. If you are shoveling, you burn even more.. but if you are out in the cold long enough, you can burn enough extra calories that you feel hungry.

It isn't enough to compensate for the holiday meals we eat though. It is one thing to have a more caloric bowl of soup, and another to eat 6 cookies, and hot chocolate. Or to sample all 4 pies at Christmas dinner.

I think other things probably burn more calories though, during colder weather.. shoveling, cleaning off the cars, and just walking through a foot of snow.. all burn extra calories.

So we do need more calories in the winter, but nowhere near what most people eat. Making up a 150 calorie deficit with 1000 extra calories of food during the holiday season, is why gym attendance is so large after New Year's... emoticon

Yes. I live in Florida and we are warm most of the year, but when it gets cold I don't want to drink water and I do want to eat hot foods! Perhaps I'd get used to it if I lived up north, but if not, I'd definitely gain weight in the cold.

I definitely want to eat more when it's cold. I'm not sure if the temperature makes me hungrier or if it's the shivering (as I wait for my bus, go for my walk, go between buildings on campus, etc.) and generally working harder to warm up through the day.

No, but it does make me want to eat soup. Made one from Spark last night which was delicious: barley, mushroom lentil soup. Hearty, filling and low calorie!

Thanks for the helpful hints, I love homemade soups in the winter and a vegetable soup would be perfect.

It can... both previous posters have good suggestions. I will often make a crock pot w/ veggies or stew. A couple of bowl-fulls are nutrient dense but not breaking the "bank" w/ calories.

Cold weather directs me to eat a little differently, and choosing more filling, longer lasting foods. I GENERALLY tend to eat a little more in winter. I think part of this is because your body uses a little more energy to keep it warm.

I start craving a lot of "comfort" foods in the winter and shorter days. I try to keep it from going too crazy by including foods that are close but made a little healthier. I'll use a lot of root vegetables as I find them more satisfying this time of year.

The temperature just dropped considerably here in the Northeast, I have noticed that I am hungry more than I was before. Has this happened to anyone else? I'm trying to fend it off by eating healthy snacks, but it's still a struggle.
