To be honest, it is a lack of self-control around sweets. I have zero control and it is ridiculous.

I also need to exercise more, which is limited by our family situation and my lack of energy at the end of the day (the only time of day I have opportunity).

Changes need to be made!

I so completely relate to everything you said. I find it the most impactful to track my calories, so that's what I am focusing on right now. Also, it helps me to do random things to make myself "pretty" - hair, nails, new clothes, even a lotion. It brings me back to my body I guess, I just spend so much focus and energy on my daughter that I fail completely to prioritize anything related to myself and my health. Also, feel free to add me as a friend - I cannot figure out how to add you for some reason.

Hi all! emoticon

@Happymom, I feel your pain. I was a full time working mom of two children. My son had a severe mental disorder, Asperger's. It's a form of Autism. I worked full time as a night nurse in pediatrics in order to be there for my son during the day. I struggled to find people to stay overnight while I worked. It was a whirlwind! I ate carbs, mostly to keep my energy up. Back then I wasn't very much overweight. But it caught up to me. Little by little I gained one pound then another. Until one day I was 186 lbs and 5'5"! My normal weight had always been 125 lbs. One day I looked in my closet to find something to wear and there wasn't one piece of clothing that fit me. I looked in the mirror at myself and cried. This was my personal bottom. I wasn't an over eater, that wasn't my normal. But I had gotten into the habit of eating ice cream and well, you know what I mean. To complicate things my health was failing. My back gave out and I suffered from severe pain. I was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis, a life threatening disease requiring IV therapy every 8 weeks. Then I came down with Fibromyalgia. Fibro gave me such severe pain there were times I had a hard time breathing. The doctor told me I was too heavy for my frame, you know? Lol. I couldn't stay away from sweets! It lessened the pain. I became an emotional eater. It took me years to get a handle on my eating habits. That's when I found SparkPeople. SP taught me to eat, how to eat and the science of food. Ever since then I've been losing, little by little. Every year I've gone down a few pounds. It's nothing to brag about, but I'm 154 now.

My biggest challenge is getting off the couch to exercise. I'm fine once I start. It's the starting that's hard. I know some of you know what I mean. Eating carbs is no longer an issue for me. I do have a good handle on my eating habits and what kind of foods I eat. I'm back to my old young self. Thank goodness for that!

My advise being a full time working mom with children, is to do some mental acrobatics. You not achieve your goal by neglecting yourself. You will only make it harder for you later on. Sleep is good. It's a requirement for health. Find 10 min or so to take a power nap. Exercise is vital to your health. You will find it gives you energy and you will find yourself catching up on your sleep. Exercise is important, very very important. Take just 5 minutes out of your tired day and do something, anything you like. You can jump up and down with your kids if you like. I don't know how old your kids are, but exercising with kids is fun. Put away the thought you are too tired to take care of yourself. You have to train your mind to override your fatigue, you have to train your mind to be more powerful than you think you are. After 2 months of 5 min exercises I think you will be better shape not only physically, but mentally. The habit with be solid in your mind. It will be automatic. Set aside the same time every day for your 5 min workout. I think after a month you may feel a nagging voice to increase your time to 10 minutes a day. Make sure you don't overdo it. Small steps is the best way to achieve your goal.

Sparkguy, the owner and creator of SparkPeople has a forum here for small steps. Take a look at it and see if you like it.

It's called "Small Goals Commitment Challenge"

The forum's format is motivational, positive and inspiring.

Hello, my friends, struggling to reach a fitness or health goals is a dream for anyone of us. Last 3 months, my friend was suffering from overweight. She is a mom of 3 children and she is working for a long time. But she decided to go to nutrition doctor who helped her to lose weight in a healthy way. He advised her to follow balance diet and walk for one hour a day beside practicing Yoga. She followed this routine, especially gentle yoga. She lost 25 K.G in 2 months, what a great effort!. I want to advise you to follow your own routine and eating a balanced diet. Don’t forget to practice gentle yoga!! Good luck dear.

I think my biggest challenge for weight loss comes with bad family eating habits. FOr instance, I have a husband who WANTS to lose weight but will not change any of his habits. So, he gets to eat whatever terrible thing he feels like eating and does this in front of me. It can be hard resist these foods when there is no one else who is resisting as well. It's like quitting smoking. It's really hard to quit when you have people around you who are smoking. However, I can say that I have been resisting and have lost 10 pounds in two weeks. My exercise has increased and I've been using SparkPeople to track and count my calories. Its terrifying to look at your favorite foods and see how many calories are in it. I use that as a big way to say NO!

Getting frustrated and thinking "I'll get back on plan tomorrow." We all know, THAT particular tomorrow never comes.

OK, and I want immediate results! Seems like my clothes feel tight really quickly when I'm overeating, yet it takes 2-3 times as long to notice a positive change. UGH! emoticon

There are definitely a lot of calories in alcoholic drinks, even "skinny margaritas." If you are adding several drinks to your normal calorie intake then it will impact your weight loss. If you are going to drink, maybe you could choose food that is lower in calories to compensate. or limit how many drinks you allow yourself to have per day.

For me, it's the weekends. I tend to be really good about my eating during the week, and am diligent with meal prep, but not so much on weekends. Weekends, even though I tend to do a lot (housework, errands, working out, etc.), my time is very unstructured and I tend to hit the fridge too much. I don't know if it's boredom, or just that I don't take the time to plan my meals carefully.

I also tend to drink quite a lot more on weekends - two or three drinks Friday night, sometimes as many as four throughout the late afternoon/evening on Saturdays, and usually two on Sunday. During the week, I rarely drink. The drinking, combined with the frequent fridge visitation, means that I tend to consume a lot more calories on weekends.

I'm starting to think that maybe this is what's hindering my weight loss. I'm wondering if maybe I should consider experimenting and cutting my alcohol intake down to one drink per day on weekends to see if it makes a difference.

My biggest struggle is trying to help my son gain weight. He's trying to put on weight and muscle for football but he has a super fast metabolism. His stomach doesn't tolerate weight gainers very well so he's trying to accomplish it with food. As you can probably imagine that makes it challenging for me trying to loose weight when he is needing to carb load and take in tons of calories. It's a test of will power for me to avoid what he's eating.

Motivation and sticking with it! It was easier when I had a friend to workout with a few years ago. Since then, I got a work-related back injury and getting back into a routine is quite difficult for myself. I was I had someone to even walk with, talking makes the time go faster for me.....

I can do this (for me), if I set my body, heart, mind and soul in the right direction...

I am now raising a granddaughter and find my weight going up because I have lost a lot of 'me time.' So I'm buying more premade food and finding myself snacking instead of eating healthy. Less time and money to go to pricey pilates studioes.

I can completely understand that! For so many years I worked so hard trying to lose weight and when it didn't happen I got so mad at myself but, I finally found a Dr that actually took the time to run blood work on me and I knew I had PCOS (Polycystic ovarian syndrome) but I never knew I was insulin resistant which basically meant all the carbs n sugar I ate turned right to fat. The Dr put me on metformin and I adjusted my diet a lot no junk food, soda, candy, potatoes , I do have some carbs but try to limit it to good carbs and of course no one can eat 0 sugar unless your a saint!! LOL but in a very short time I have lost 33 lbs and of course I started slowly exercising over time building up the steps I walked each day and added a new exercise each week and so far I feel so much better. A lot of my encouragement came from this Spark People site. Tracking my food and fitness and progress holds me accountable which I found that I really needed but it also helped me see what vitamins I am lacking and I started supplementing those in each day and my energy is up so much and I sleep better than I have in years. But the best thing I can tell you is keep doing what u are suppose to, eat better and exercise , I found that my fitness tracker (which is a cheap $20 model) has helped me more because I can look at it and I can see that I need to get off my butt and do more exercise for the day. I hadn't exercised in years I lived on my couch and I was miserable but, each day I made myself get up and walk , even if it was laps around the house , and each day I tried to add more steps than the day before. Maybe you should see your dr and see if u have a food that u are allergic to. You don't have to have a reaction to the food to be allergic. Some food slows down your digestive system, some food will make you swell up. If I had never had my blood work done I would still be sittin on the couch not doing anything different. You can do it just keep in mind why your doing it and don't feel like u have to see results instantly . Your body will have to adjust and once u figure out the right foods to avoid and the right exercises for you u won't want to stop!!! Good luck!!!

I am my biggest challenge. I'll do well for a while and then decide I can have a few drinks one night. That then includes snacks. The next day I feel so rotten that I decide to continue eating as if it makes no difference. Then it takes time to get back on track.

I do think it is important to control the portion size. Even if you indulge in something you know is loaded with calories, cutting the portion in half or even thirds and spreading it out over two or three days is better than eating it all in one sitting.

I have a hard time actually making something healthy. I find it's easier to just run to a fast food place to get something to eat.
Or by the time I come home from work, play with my son, cook, and clean I just don't want to work out. I want to lay in bed and read.

I have recently been experiencing feeling hungry several times a day, especially late in the day. I usually try to fight it but sometimes I feel so hungry I can't resist. Not sure what is going on with me.

I've had three kids, so maybe I can speak to this. Sometimes our bodies just stay in "pregancy mode."

Breastfeeding/pumping brought my weight down, but there is a certain amount that does not come off until you are done with that.

Then there is the issue of sleep. My guess is you are not getting enough. And the body does not want to lose weight when you get that sleep deprived. Give yourself permission to nap. Try to get your significant other or family or friends to watch your little one on Saturday afternoons so you can get some significant napping in. Remember a healthy mom is necessary to raise a healthy kid.

Tracking calories, exercise and sleep really is a must to break through. If I don't really track, I will not get the numbers right and I won't see what is causing the problem.

My best advice, keep going. Eventually your body will get the hint and start losing again. Keep tracking. Keep loving that little one. Keep loving yourself!

After you have a baby, I think hormones have a lot to do with your weight. Nature is making sure you have adequate nutrients to pass along through breast milk. If you are not breast feeding, I think the hormone process will still make it difficult to loose weight the normal way.

Almost everything you describe about losing weight pre-pregnancy to now is me too! Before I got pregnant, I lost almost 80 lbs, with just diet and exercise.

18 months after my son was born, I'm still holding onto around 25ish pounds which I can't budge no matter what! It seems like I'm constantly clinging to an excuse as to why I can't seem to lose anything-- at first it was because I was pumping/breastfeeding, then it was because I wasn't sleeping enough, etc, but one by one I'm eliminating all of those things, and still the weight stays on.

I walk almost everyday, and have been running with the stroller recently (I can run almost 6 miles consecutively). My total miles for the week average 40 to 50, and my active minutes according to my fitbit last week were over 500. What's the deal?? I still can't lose weight. My diet is ok too--I have a desk job and plan/bring all my food for the day.

Set yourself up with some healty snacks for the late night such as fruit. If you can combine an activity with your child that will also burn calories, that is a win, win.

Hey lovely mums,

I managed to lose weight prior to having kids and I did pretty well but now that I have a 17 month old I am finding it a real struggle! I am super tired working full time and taking care of him -he's also been sick loads since he started daycare so I'm up at nights and I always end up turning to chocolate and junk food to keep me going! Plus no time for a gym membership. I'd really like to fit back into some of my old clothes! Anyone else struggling with this?
